Dear Friends, Thank you for perusing our catalog. Take a look at the free shipping options, the great savings when you buy in bulk and much more. I especially want to call your attention to page 12. Roots in the Cotton Patch and Fruits of the Cotton Patch, both edited by Kirk Lyman-Barner and Cori Lyman-Barner, are books coming from the inspiring talks, lectures and workshops presented at the Clarence Jordan Symposium. These books are indeed worth the read.

By Faith and By Love by Beverly England Williams is a beautifully written book about Koinonia co-founders Mabel and Martin England. You’ll learn not only about the love they poured into the founding of this community, but the love they poured into so many other countless lives and causes around the world.

Whatever you order, once you have mailed in the enclosed form, placed your order over the phone or online, please take a look at our new Web site - www.koinoniafarm.org. We’ve added a whole host of guided retreats, workshops and classes — all being held in the newly renovated Jordan House. Read about the “Come, See and Serve” and the “Come, Rest and Renew” programs at Koinonia, too.

All the best from all of us,

Bren DubaySteward & Director

Factoid:According to the USDA, pecans

possess more antioxidant activity than any other tree

nut. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances, such as the polyphenolics found in pecans.

They keep in check the potentially harmful effects of free radicals, reactive oxygen species which

the body produces from normal metabolism and that are also

encountered in the environment. To get a daily dose of these natural

antioxidants, try 10 raw pecan halves (a handful) as a snack.

Fair Trade ChocolateSome have claimed that Clarence Jordan’s insistence on paying equal living wages to both black and white workers in the 1940’s was one of the first demonstrations of the Fair Trade philosophy. In keeping with our history of peace and justice work, we are pleased to announce that all Koinonia chocolate barks are now Fair Trade!

The late David Castle liked to say that a balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. Feel good about satis-fying your sweet tooth with antioxidant rich dark chocolate blended with biologically grown pecan pieces.

We carefully melt our chocolate in small batches, then add only the finest quality nuts, and hand-pour our barks at precise temperatures. The result is a delightfully simple, delectable treat that’s sure to bring extra smiles to any occasion.

Partnerships: Palestinian GoodsIn 2013 we began a relationship with Canaan Fair Trade, and your response was overwhelming. Canaan’s goods are certified organic, and they use Fair Trade practices to empower small and mar-ginalized Palestinian producers who are caught in the midst of conflict. The 1,700 farmers, orga-nized in small village cooperatives, continue to produce their goods in spite of the political and social barriers that sometimes separate them from their land. Sales of these goods provide direct support to these family farmers who are using an-cient, sustainable farming practices on the sacred soils of the Holy Land. Learn more at www.canaanfairtrade.org.

Whether you are part of a church or office group, a school group, a Habitat Affiliate or a Fuller Center Covenant Partner, etc., consider partnering with us year-round.

Let’s Become Partners!

• Does your church have a coffee hour? Supply Koinonia coffee and date-nut bread or granola each week.

• Would your clients, friends, or neighbors enjoy the taste of Koinonia chocolate or pecans? Our products are perfect gifts for the Holidays and year-round.

• Is your coffee break room fully stocked with the highest quality, fair-trade coffee? It’s sure to improve your work efficiency.

• Do you attend meetings on a regular basis? Why not bring Koinonia chocolate along to help ensure a productive meeting.

• Are you raising money for your church, a trip, or your school? Consider purchasing Koinonia products to use for your fundraiser. Especially, in the 1950s and 1960s, some of our largest customers were groups doing just that. Some even chose to give the money raised to Koinonia to help with our ongoing work!

• Looking for a healthy breakfast option? Our granola gets the job done, and doubles as a great snack, too.

Interested in any of these options? Please give us a call at 229 924-0391 or send us an e-mail to [email protected].

When you purchase our products, you not only support our community, our sustainable farming practices, and other values we hold dear, but you also afford us the opportunity to minister to others. Since the founding of our community, hospitality has been central to our common life. This year we completed two construction projects that allow us to expand our ministry of hospitality, providing much needed space to welcome friends and neighbors to share this place we are blessed to call home.

Guests come from all over the world for many reasons — to enjoy nature, to work, to rest, to explore our legacy and the writings of Clarence Jordan, to find out more about our commitment to peace and social justice, our farming practices, to see the birthplace of so many wonderful organizations and ministries.

We welcome you to join in our life and benefit from the ministry you help make possible. We’ve put together a schedule of workshops, retreats, and guided retreats that we offer throughout the year. Visit our website to learn more about each opportunity and to schedule your visit.

Y’all come!

Guided Retreats and ClassesThe retreat program provides a rich variety of presentations designed around a central theme. Some are more contemplative in nature and some are more hands on. But be sure that between sessions, retreatants have plenty of time to rest, pray, reflect, enjoy the quiet and renew. See our website for a complete listing and for any date changes.

Come, Rest & RenewIn the 1960s, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, scores of Civil Rights workers came to Koinonia to find respite. Refreshed, they would then return to the field. People are still coming to drink of the waters and find refreshment here. Pastors, writers, artists, workers of today’s movements, these visits are for all who labor and need a time for rest and renewal.

Come, See & ServeThis popular option includes both work and learning. Guests help with daily tasks around the farm and have the option to attend talks given by community members several times during their stay. This is a great way for a church or college group to visit. You can use this chance to gift the community by sponsoring and/or performing a needed work project. For example, a recent group raised the money to buy materials to paint one our buildings during their Come, See & Serve week.

Koinonia (Greek for loving community) was founded in 1942 to be a “demonstration plot for the Kingdom of God,” sharing resources, work, and prayer much like the example of early Christians in the Book of Acts.

Our most deeply held belief are drawn from Jesus’ teachings—peacemaking, radical sharing, and brotherhood/sisterhood among people regardless of race. In the 1950’s and 60’s, Koinonia was fiercely reviled for these beliefs. Our mail-order pecan business brought us through years of local boycott, and remains our main source of earned income.

Koinonia is also a haven of down-to-earth theology. Founding member Clarence Jordan was a farmer and a Greek scholar. He penned

the Cotton Patch Version into South Georgia vernacular, seeking to place scripture in the ‘here and now’ of his day. His books and lively sermons are still beloved and well-known today.

Our life of service has taken various forms through the years. In the early days, we extended friendship to our neighbors, mostly Black sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Koinonia gave birth to the partnership housing movement in 1968 that later grew into Habitat for Humanity. Our current focus is on “feeding the hungry”not only physically, but spiritually as well. We grow healthy food, offer internships and workshops, and, as always, welcome people to walk this journey with us. Below is a list of ways you can become part of the story!
