Due John Harper was born on May 29, 1872 and died on April 15, 1912. Why is he important enough for me to feature in my article? Why is the date of his birth and death so important? Well, he was a Scottish, Baptist pastor, who died in the Titanic disaster on the North Atlantic. And, his story is worth hearing. John Harper was born in a little village in Scotland, in 1872. He personally embraced his parents' Christian faith at age 14, and he began preaching at 18. He supported himself in early adulthood by doing manual labor in a mill, until Baptist pastor E.A. Carter of Baptist Pioneer Mission in London heard of his preaching and placed him in ministry work in Govan, Scotland. In 1897, he became the first pastor of the Paisley Road Baptist Church in Glasgow, Scotland. Under his care, the church quickly grew from 25 members to over 500. At the time of the Titanic disaster, Harper was 39. Also, he was a widower with a six-year-old daughter, Annie Jessie, and pastor of Walworth Road Baptist Church in London. He was traveling on the Titanic with his daughter and sister, Jessie Leitch, to Chicago to preach for several weeks at the famous Moody Church, where he had been guest minister the previous fall. It was on this fateful journey across the ocean, when the unsinkable ship hit an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912, and went down in the ocean. His daughter and sister were put on a lifeboat and survived, but Pastor John Harper voluntarily stayed behind and jumped into the water, as the ship began to sink, so that he could preach the Gospel to the people, who were about to die. cont. pg. 2

John Harper was born on May 29, 1872 and died on April 15, 1912.

***ALL LADIES ARE INVITED***

WMU Qtly. Mtg. Oct. 23rd @ 7pm

Bethel is hosting the WMU this month. We invite all ladies

to come support your WOM ladies!!

Some who survived told that Harper preached the Gospel to the end (especially Acts 16:31), first aboard the sinking ship, and then afterward to those in the freezing water before dying in it himself. He stayed behind to preach the Gospel to those dying people. He willingly died so that he might reach the lost.

Also, it’s told that Harper took off his own life vest and gave it to another man, because the man was lost. He was not saved. And, Harper wanted the man to live long enough to get saved, later on. What a remarkable story of a Christian man, who loved Jesus, and who truly cared about the souls of others.

The story of John Harper aboard the Titanic is told in the book, The Titanic's Last Hero, published by Moody Adams.

Dear people, may we have more of a heart and deep desire to win the lost around us! May we be more concerned with winning people to Jesus; enough to love people. No matter what walk of life they come from. No matter how they look. No matter what they’ve done in the past, or haven’t done. No matter what kind of car they drive. No matter how unpopular they may be. No matter if they’re young or old. No matter if they’re good looking or not so good looking. No matter if they dress nice, or don’t dress that great. No matter if they’re educated, or not very smart. May we have the same kind of heart as John Harper, and love people. To win them to Christ!

He is Risen,

Youth Stuff Hey Church Family!

Every year in October, the youth have our month long

Scavenger Hunt. It may be one of my favorite traditions in the group.

We have puzzles, games, and challenges that all culminate in one big

hunt to declare a winning team. It’s great fun and we want you to

encourage your youth to take part. Every Wednesday and Sunday

night throughout October, we’ll be doing things that help the teams

earn points for the hunt. Our finale will be on Oct. 28th after the

morning service. We’ll provide lunch and the youth will get two hours

in the afternoon to get as many points as possible.

We’re also going to start planning our annual trip to the

Strength to Stand Conference in Pigeon Forge this month. The conference is held over the MLK holiday weekend on Jan. 19-21st.

We are asking the students to pay $50 to attend the conference. That money will be due by Oct. 24th. Please never let cost keep

your youth from attending an event. If you would like your youth to come but the cost is an issue, please come and talk to me. I

promise that we will work something out and make sure that your youth is able to attend.

God is continuing to bless us in the youth ministry and we thank you for all the prayers. Please, keep praying for us!

In Christ,

Bro. Josh

Kid’s Corner

Hey Church Family!

October is a great month for our children’s ministry at Bethel.

Our Fall Festival is one of our biggest outreaches to the families in our

community. We will be having it this year on Oct. 27th from 2-4 pm.

We’ll have inflatables, food, and, of course, a lot of candy. Please be

in prayer for this event and make plans to join us! We’re always

happy to have help or more trunks!

Awana is also in full swing and we want to encourage the kids

to get the word out. On October 21st, we’re going to have Friend

Night! We’re going to give out one thousand points to students who

bring a new friend to church that evening. Our hope is that those new

friends might come back Wednesday and join in with the CIA

Hayride. After the Hayride, hopefully they’ll join their friends again

on Saturday for the Fall Festival and then come back to Awana again

for more fun with our Costume Theme Night! It’s a week packed with

fun and we’re praying that God will use it to bring new families into

our ministry. Be praying for us!

Remember that Awana serves kids from two years old through

sixth grade. As you meet families and children in the community, please invite them to join us on Sunday nights at 5 pm. Keep

praying for us!

In Christ,

Bro. Josh
