FROM THE RABBI
Happy birthday to us!
The month of January is here along with the 120th Anniversary of Tree of Life Congregation… it is time for us to party on! We have lots of celebrations in the works this year. Here are our joyous plans for January:
Our anniversary day is January 15th, the Friday night of Martin Luther King weekend. Our Shabbat evening service will be a special one that celebrates the community’s history - the Hon. Richard Gergel, our congregation’s history buff, will reflect on the last 120 years. Rabbi Sanford Marcus, our Rabbi Emeritus, will read Torah.
Invitations to past Presidents of Temple, WRJ/Sisterhood and Brotherhood whom we would love to honor have been sent, and melodies we have loved over the 120 years of our existence will be played and sung. What would make it really a party … is your presence and that of any past members of our synagogue. Consider this a personal invite for them and for you. Let us reminisce the past together as we begin our next 120 years in the present, looking towards the future.
The following weekend the celebration continues– DAN NICHOLS WILL BE IN THE TOL HOUSE! On Friday evening, Dan will co-lead our service. His compositions and presence are magic; his acoustic music beautiful. You will not want to miss it. Dan will be working with our instrumentalists on Shabbat Morning for our second Shabbos Jam to prepare for a wonderful concert with Dan at the center. The concert, will be on Saturday night. Finally, we are planning a very unique interactive Tu B’Shevat Seder for our school with Dan Nichols and me on Sunday morning. Interlopers welcome.
L’Shem Shamayimam (For the Sake of Heaven)
In Jewish parlance, a machloket l’shem shamayim, is a dispute for the sake of heaven. In modern parlance, we call this “constructive conflict.” In Mishna Avot 5:17, we read a text that tells us the counterpoint dialogue between Hillel’s school of thought and Shammai’s school of thought are destined to endure. These disputations are for the sake of heaven because they center around issues. However, the disputation offered up by Korach and company, which was an attack on Moses and his leadership, was not destined to endure because it was a personal attack.
The last few months have raised several disputes in this world. Perhaps because we are in the midst of the political season, those matters seem somehow more controversial as they are raised in the discussion of the policies our country will choose. From the Bima, I have not shied away from addressing dividing issues. Whether it be the acceptance of Syrian refugees, reaching out to our Muslim neighbors, or climate change. I have included what Judaism has to say on these matters in my sermons and stories. Many of you have expressed appreciation. I know others of you feel discomfort.
I recall the words of my teachers – it is the rabbis job “to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” When I raise these issues, I want you to know that I am doing it “machloket l’shem shamayim.” We are Reform Jews, we consider and study our tradition and sometimes agree or disagree with it. We are Reform Jews, we consider and study with our rabbis and sometimes agree or disagree with them. This is what makes Reform Judaism unique; the ability to bring our own perspective and opinion into our dialogues with tradition, our fellow Jews, and God. Thank you to all of you who have argued with me for the sake of heaven. I have grown and hopefully you have grown too.
I am reminded of the well-known tale of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, two men lost In the forest. When they found each other, one cried out, “Friend, help me out of this forest.” The other said, “I am lost too, but I can tell you the paths I have tried that led nowhere, and you can tell me the paths you tried that led nowhere. Let’s hold hands, try new paths, and perhaps we will find our way out of this forest together.”
These complicated issues will only be worked through by our discussions, by holding hands, and finding a way through the forest of the future together as we dialogue for the sake of heaven.
Rabbi Linda Joseph

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL DIRECTOR
I can hardly believe January 2016 is here. The years seem to be flying by. We ended 2015 on a high note here at Religious School with various holiday festivities. I want to say a huge TODAH RABAH to everyone who helped with the Hanukkah Dinner, Hanukkah Happening, and Hanukkah at Waterford. Those special events could not have been done without all of you. I want to give a special THANKS to everyone who purchased gifts for the Family Shelter this year. We went above and beyond, and they were very grateful.
As we ring in the New Year, January is a special time for the Jews this year as well. Tu B’Shevat falls on January 24-25. On this holiday, we celebrate the new year of the Trees. We eat seven types of fruits and grains that grow in Israel: Barley, figs, dates, olives, grapes, pomegranates, and wheat. Trees provide this food for us, along with shelter, shade, and oxygen, they represent life and sustain us in many ways. I would like to give a special shout-out and a huge thank you to our Green Team and our Junior Green Team and say that I am so proud of our kids.
This month, I would also like to welcome Dan Nichols, who will be joining us for the weekend of January 22-24. He will be here to take part in another milestone for Tree of Life, our 120th
year that occurs on January 15th, 2016. He also will be part of our Tu B’Shevat services and our luncheon Seder on Sunday, January 24th. He will be taking a musical part in our Seder along with our own Four Fathers, and I know it will be a wonderful experience for our Religious School children. Our 120th year will prove to be amazing as we celebrate this year with many fun and memorable times.
Also on January 31, 2016, the brotherhood is holding their annual blood drive in the Social Hall and I hope that you will all come out and support them and this very worthy cause.
I am very thankful for the amazing time I have had working with the Religious School the past few months, and I am beyond excited to see what new adventures the new year has to offer us all!

GREEN TEAM
NEW MARKER RECYCLING PROGRAM
The Green Team has partnered with the Religious School to offer a new recycling program. We are now collecting used markers for recycling by Crayola. The collection bin is outside the office door. We also recycle office paper, cell phones, batteries, six-pack rings, plastic caps, and everything accepted by Richland County. Please help our collections and recycle at home too. The past year was productive for the Green Team. We helped the Religious School students plant a beautiful bed of flowers and herbs next to the Sukkah. We also assisted five families who planted a tree in hon-or of a baby, and we participated in the Tu B’Shevat Seder. The Green Team handled recycling for the Big Nosh. Our new table signs asking guests to recycle were a success. Our watershed and recycling exhibits were popular and the rain garden received many visitors. Our cooks were given recycling instructions before the Big Nosh and recycled cartons and other materials as well. Members also helped clear the grounds beforehand. We are already preparing for the 2016 Big Nosh, where we’ll be collecting food and paper scraps for composting. We will continue to recycle plastic bottles and cans. Thanks go to David Potter for painting 8 bins green for the composting. We are starting a Junior Green Team, the Saplings, and will be assisting the Religious School for Tu B’Shevat January 21. We will be announcing other programs later in the year such as the Holland Bulb Sale. To learn more about the Green Team, please visit http://www.tolsc.org/about-us/associations/green-team Please contact us at [email protected] if you would like to be added to our email list or have questions. Please consider earmarking your TOL donations for the Green Team.
BROTHERHOOD
Second Annual Latke Sale
Our Second Annual Latke Sale was a success thanks to much hard work by Chef Eric Feurerstein, Ed Hertz, Jerry Emanuel, Steve Savitz, Robert Feinstein and David Carr. Combined we made over 900 latkes for our sale, the Hanukkah Dinner, and Hanukkah Happening. It was a big success due to the hard work of a few individuals and I would like to once again thank them for the hours they spent with me (David Carr) at the Temple, preparing, cooking, and packaging our latkes.
The Brotherhood will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive on Sunday,
January 31st from 9:00 – 1:00.
