2017 has proven to be a good year, with many accomplishments reached throughout the first two terms for our students and staff.Term 2 has flown and the conclusion of the semester brings end results to the different units studied throughout the school for alldifferent subject areas undertaken by the students. It could be said that while being hectic it has also been a very productive timefor all involved.

Our students have completed courses, undertaken all required school based and externally managed assessment for all courses,have participated in extra-curricular activities such as camps, reflection days, wellbeing days, sporting events, work experience,leaderships opportunities and attended school assemblies. Congratulations to the students who attended the various communityservice opportunities available throughout. This service gives faith, courage and compassion in a realistic and supportive way to ourextended community. Congratulations to all the students who represented the College at the SACCSS competitions, especially thoseinvolved in finals. There has a vibrant and positive feeling about a sense of future at the College for the students. The threeunderpinning values of “Safe, Fair, and Kind” continue to drive our direction of students as they realise the gifts of “Faith Courageand Compassion” in their actions. During this term, students have yet again shown great leadership skills and reverence in schoolcelebrations, and have raised the bar with regards to following our requests and directions.

The College staff have thoroughly prepared the students for the undertaking of the tasks, have corrected the work, providedvaluable advice and guidance, have written and corrected exams, written semester reports, and attended the various camps,excursions and other extra-curricular activities mentioned. It is true that Kolbe staff members are the best asset and resourceavailable to the students in assisting their holistic development.

Earlier in the term, I was proud to attend what I considered to be the ‘best ever Year 12 formal’ I have ever been a part of. In 20years of teaching, I have never witnessed such maturity and joy from the students attending. Well done class of 2017 on your effortand fine example to celebrating in community.

Finally, a message from Hume Council - please look at the various activities that the Hume City Council offers our community.Although the booking time for most of the available events has ceased, there are many free events scheduled for the holidays. Inaddition, the council offers an extensive range of programs for students to undertake. Information can be found here:

Semester One ExaminationsWednesday 7 June 2017 was the final day of Semester One Examinations for all students at the College. This period of assessmentproved to be a great opportunity for our students to celebrate their learning as well as a good experience to prepare them fordifferent components of their final years of secondary schooling.

Students have received their marked examination papers back from Subject Teachers with feedback to inform their next stage oflearning. This feedback stage proves to be valuable in allowing students to reflect on their current performance and set goals for thefuture. Families are encouraged to engage in discussion with students about their results and strategies for future learning success.

Semester One 2017 Academic ReportsThe Semester One Report for students in Year 7-12 will be made available for families to download from SEQTA ConeqtP on Friday23 June 2017. Families with questions regarding the contents of a particular report are asked to contact their child’s LearningAdvisor. Questions related to downloading the reports via SEQTA ConeqtP are to be directed to the College IT Department.

Years 7 – 11 Parent/Learning Advisor/Student Conferences and Year 12 Subject InterviewsTo complement the academic reporting process, the College will be facilitating Year 12 Subject Interviews and Year 7-11Parent/Learning Advisor/ Student Conferences on Wednesday 26 July 2017 and Thursday 27 July 2017. These conferences areclosely linked with goals from the College strategic plan associated with student development and ownership over learning. Theinterviews and conferences aim to target major components of the student learning journey such as self reflection, goal setting,pathways planning, subject selection etc. Specific details regarding each of these conferences/interviews will be made available tofamilies when they receive the Semester One Report.

VCE Units Three and Four General Achievement Test (GAT)On Wednesday 14 June 2017 all students currently enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3 and 4 sequences sat theGeneral Achievement Test (GAT). Students are to be congratulated on their approach to the GAT. Families with questions orconcerns regarding components of the GAT or the way this assessment is used to complement the study of VCE or scored VCE VETUnits are welcome to make contact with Mr Anthony Schepis (Curriculum Leader: Years 10-12) or Mr Dane Calleja (AssistantPrincipal- Learning and Teaching).

Year 10 Work Experience 2017As part of the Pathways Program all Year 10 students will participate in the College’s Work Experience Program from Monday 26June 2017 until Friday 30 June 2017. Work experience is designed to give students insights into the industry and workplace in whichthey are interested.

Work experience has enormous benefits for students as it gives them a chance to:

Work alongside adults as part of a team, gaining an understanding of work.

Develop and practice a range of new skills.

Become more independent and confident.

Relate the school curriculum to the workplace.

Increase motivation to continue their study and/or undertake further training.

Explore career options.

Questions or concerns related to Work Experience, student placement and all related documentation can be directed to Ms DebraWilliams (Coordinator: Careers and Pathways).

Year 9 Camp 2017Year 9 students at the College will attend camp at Portsea on the Monday 26 June 2017, Tuesday 27 June 2017 and Wednesday 28June 2017. The camp is linked with learning outcomes associated with the Year 9 LEAD Program. Students and families havereceived an information pack containing a range of documentation and information in relation to the camp. Families with questionsor concerns regarding the upcoming camp are welcome to make contact with Ms Erin Lane (Curriculum Leader: Years 7-9) at theCollege. We wish all students and staff attending the camp a safe and happy journey.

Year 11 2018 Information Evening and Course ExpoAs part of the transition process into the Senior School at Kolbe Catholic College in 2018, the College will be hosting an InformationEvening aimed at explaining the pathway options for students in Years 11 and 12. The Information Evening will mark the beginningof the 2018 Course Selection Process for students and families.

On Wednesday 19 July 2017, current Year 10 students will be attending a Course Expo during their scheduled lessons. The expo willshowcase the various senior subjects and courses on offer at the College. Current VCE, VET and VCAL teachers will be on hand toanswer questions about their subjects. The Course Expo will also be open to families from 6:15pm until the beginning of theInformation Evening at 7:00pm on this day. This will provide families with the opportunity to ask questions of the VCE, VET andVCAL teachers about the various subjects and courses on offer.

All Year 10 students received electronic access to the Senior Handbook on Thursday 22 June 2017. Hard copies of this documenthave been posted to families and are also available for download via the College Website.

Semester One 2017 Academic Awards AssembliesTo celebrate and recognise academic achievement throughout Semester One 2017, the College will be hosting Academic Assembliesfor students in Years 7-9 and students in Years 10-12. The details of which are provided below.

Date: Friday 28 July 2017

Location: Kolbe Catholic College: Stadium

Time: 9.00 am – 10.00 am (Years 7-9) and 11.30am – 12.30pm (Years 10-12)

At the Assembly, certificates of Academic Excellence and Academic Merit will be awarded to students for the individualperformance exhibited throughout their Semester One Learning Program. The College would like to extend an invitation to allfamilies to attend. Families of award winners will be notified via CareMonkey.

NAPLAN Online TrialKolbe Catholic College has been selected to participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)Online Item-Trial. The Online Item-Trial is a set of computer-based tests that are delivered using the new online national assessmentplatform. The purpose of the Item-Trial is to evaluate NAPLAN test items that are under consideration for inclusion in future tests.This will provide Kolbe Catholic College with a valuable insight into the future of online testing.

More details regarding the dates, chosen classes and findings from the experience will be shared with families as the VCAA makesthem available.

Homework ClubThroughout 2017, our very popular Homework Club will continue to be offered for students. This is a great way for students toreceive some extra academic support and complete homework tasks as well as study alongside their peers in the comfort of theCollege Library. Homework Club will occur every Monday and Thursday from 3.30- 4.15pm.

In addition to the general strand of Homework Club, the English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Mathematics strands ofHomework Club will continue to operate in 2017.

Please note that there will be no Homework Club on Thursday 29 June 2017.

The 5 Ls of Learning in ActionLearning and Teaching at Kolbe Catholic College centres around the 5 Ls of Learning. Listed below is a snapshot of the 5 Ls ofLearning in action over the past week:

All Year 12 students attended the Tertiary Information Session on Tuesday 20 June 2017. This was an amazing opportunityfor students to explore their future pathways and experiment with different course options for post secondary education.

The College celebrated Library and Information Week. This saw a school wide approach to referencing and the use of‘sources for exploration’ launched.

All Year 12 students participated in a specialist Academic Masterclass Afternoon on Thursday 15 June 2017. For VCEstudents these workshops focused on examination preparation and strategies for examination success. For VCAL studentsthese workshops focused on employability skills, interview preparation and industry exploration.

Year 10 students participated in Pathways Exploration Days on Wednesday 21 June 2017 and Thursday 22 June 2017. Thesedays saw students learn about Tax, Finance, and the World of Work as well as participate in workshops and presentationsfrom past Kolbe students and Industry Representatives.

Year 8 students participated in the Swinburne University Italian Poetry Competition on Thursday 22 June 2017. Thisprovided students with an authentic opportunity to celebrate their learning and use their skills associated with Italianlanguage and culture from Year 7 and 8 LOTE classes.

VET Sport and Recreation students ventured off site on Thursday 22 June 2017 to practice and perfect their skills in one ofMelbourne’s high calibre personal training studios. This enabled students to complete core components of the VET coursein an authentic setting and gain industry experience.

Term 2 has been a busy time with lots of camps, excursions, incursions and guest speakers. All of this has run smoothly due to thehard work of the staff here at Kolbe, the positive learning attitudes of the students and the input and response of parents. Kolbe isa busy place and camps, work experience and all the other learning would not be the same without the ‘can-do’ attitude of thewhole community.

Caremonkey has been running well. Can I please remind everyone to update the Caremonkey Ap with medical information anddietary requirements. If your son or daughter has an allergy/intolerance to a particular food, please also include this in the dietaryrequirements section. We have occasionally experienced difficulty where emergency contact details are not accurate or up to date.It is best that this is changed through Caremonkey (at your convenience). We can make a note if you contact the College to notify isof the change, but Caremonkey needs to be changed as well.

Planning for the Kolbe Ten Years Anniversary is well underway. On Friday the 18th

of August the whole school will travel to StPatrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne to celebrate Mass. There are lots of opportunities for the students to be involved in this and weencourage students to get involved, whole school masses in the Cathedral are significant events and ones which embed in ourmemories. Information will be sent out shortly. K-Fest and Feast Day activities are also well into planning and there is much tocelebrate in the Kolbe College Community.

Student News – ‘Access 10’ and Careers & Pathways

Access10On Friday 23 June, the Access 10 group participated in a FoodTour, which saw them travel throughout the inner city lane ways,discovering and tasting a range of the many food optionsMelbourne has to offer. The students were enthralled with whatthe lane ways had to offer and the wonderful tastes that were onoffer. The tours last step was the State Library, where studentswere amazed by the sheer size of the dome.

Careers & PathwaysYear 10 students participated in two Careers & Pathways Days. The first day, there were 4 workshops with presentations from TheAustralian Taxation Office, Strathmore Community Bank, the Young Workers Centre & Apprenticeships Matter. The presentersspoke to students about issues facing teenagers, in work, banking and finance, taxation and superannuation and what skills andattributes employers are currently looking for.

Students then had the opportunity to roam through a mini Tertiary Expo, with representatives from ACU, Latrobe University, RMITUniversity and Melbourne Polytechnic TAFE. This expo allowed students to ask questions about courses they were interested in andgather course guide resources.

The second day, students had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers from industry talk about their jobs and what they do on aday to day basis. We had speakers from a large city Law firm, a forensic psychologist, an interior designer, a music recordingengineer and transport and logistics. Students listened first hand to their experiences and what they did to get to the position theycurrently hold. This was followed by four of our past students coming back and sharing their journeys since graduating from Kolbe.Valentina and Brittany (alumni 2013) and Marvin and Joe (alumni 2015) shared their pathways since leaving, and the success they’reenjoying in the study and work life. The day ended with a workshop from VicRoads, where students participated in the Keys Pleaseprogram, for young learner drivers.

It’s not every day that you meet someone like Sam Clear, a guy from Tasmania who spent 568 dayswalking some 15,600km on a pilgrimage around the world.

On the 30 May, Year 9 students met Sam Clear, who came toamazing, death defying travels - particularly in the jungles of South America and icy polar conditions ofSiberia. Incredibly, Sam initiated this “Walk4One” mission by journgetting people to pray for Christian unity. In a Saint Paulof abuse, was threatened, was robbed and even faced pumas, scorpions and snakes!

Sam’s sessions enabled our Year 9 students to learn about characters such as Panamanian Adolfo,whose father sacrificed everything for his family. This brought a new context about what it means to bepoor in Spirit. Sam used inquiry sessions, activities and some games that were thougthe intention of getting our students to learn to be more accepting of the people that we encounter inour lives.

Sam commented that he loved our students’ deep spirit, with many contributing insightful andinteresting responses.

The Year 9s experienced a different timetable to their normal routine. They loved the pizzareally enjoyed doing sporting activities during their breaks, particularly the jump rope and ball activities.

The Liturgy in the afternoon enabled the studeask the question and light a candle while answering the question: Where am I willing to allow God tomake a difference in my life? Sam encouraged everyone to be like Sister Hilda Scott, from the JambeAbbey, to “be blunt and honest in our prayer”. He also noted that God is so close to the poorest in ourworld and we are encouraged to pray the Beatitudes, “blessed are the poor in spirit”.

As part of the focus on 5 Ls of Learning, Kolbe Catholic College is aiming for continuous school improvement in order to enhastudent learning outcomes to do just that. This means turning away from the traditional education system, to a degree, that wasdesigned in the Industrial Revolution. The upcoming curriculum audits for every year 7 to 10 subject will ensure that we arestudents’ needs by reflecting on content, process and the final product to prepare them for their ever changing future.

for people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds who care for a person with disability.This is an opportunity to hear from guest speakers and learn about services and support available. It is also an opportunity to share your knowledge and experience.

Each meeting will cover different topics including: your rights, the NDIS, and carer wellbeing. Join in on any day!

The workshops will be facilitated by Effie Meehan and Janet Curtain, who are parents with a lot of experience in disability. Information will be in plain English and translators can be arranged.
