August is Membership Month, which means it’s time to celebrate the good that our Rotary club does in our community and around the world.

This will be a very busy month for the Mauka Rotary, we have District Governor Laura Steelquist visiting on the 19th followed by a reception on the evening of the 20th for all four West Hawaii clubs. We have a new member in the works who hopefully will be inducted on the day of the DG’s visit. Each meeting during the month of August will have 5-10 minutes set aside to touch on mem-bership and retention, both of which are the backbone of Rotary and everyone's responsibility. Let us all remember

why we became Rotarians and be able to “tell our story” to all potential members.

August is Membership and Retention Month. Our club has been

growing at a healthy rate—therefore our Membership Chairs (Dave Hiranaka and Laura Kniffin) are leading the club in focusing on retention and engagement. Each new member attends a ‘Fireside Chat’ orientation and receives a binder detailing what our club is all about and what Rotary represents locally, regionally, and globally. Obligations, expectations and benefits are clearly spelled out in order for prospective members to determine if Rotary is a good fit. New members are also provided with a checklist to help with the orientation process. Dave and Laura will provide a mentor; the mentorship program is an important aspect to helping to connect and engage our new members. Please be sure to respond to the recently distributed Membership Survey so that they can see where our strengths lie and target areas that need to be strengthened. Pertinent information will be passed on to other Avenues of Service as well. At each meeting this month you can look forward to a Membership Moment in order to help the entire club focus on this important aspect of keeping our club healthy and vibrant.

As We Begin Our New Rotary Year . . . Page 4

Page 5: Kona Nightingale - Microsoft...Kona Nightingale August 2014 August is Membership Month, which means it’s time to celebrate the good that our Rotary club does in our community and

What was the club’s big project the year you were president? The emphasis was to stabilize what had been done in the past. It became important to be sure meeting ended on or before 1:00 P.M. since many needed to get back to work in a timely manner. Working cooperatively with other clubs was important. Pastor David Rees-Thomas was president of Kona Club and we had a close working relationship; this included a joint installation of three West Hawaii clubs. What are you most proud of? Our on gong relationship with the Mizusawa Club. What is your strongest memory from that year? The strong relationship with Kona’s president, Pastor David Rees-Thomas. He is still a member of the Kona

Club and I continue to keep in contact with him today.

Any advice you’d pass along to newer members? There may be members, presidents, and even projects, which you may not always agree with. Remember that

Rotary is bigger than any one individual or any one project. Stick with it, over time you will most likely find mem-

bers and projects that you embrace and feel passionate about.

This is a new feature in which we will

highlight a past president from our club

in order to get a snapshot of their experience as president of Rotary Club of Kona Mauka.

Bill has the been a member of the club since 1973. At that time many members came

from the Kona Jaycees after reaching their age limit of 35 years old.

Some Current Projects Addressing Rotary’s 6 Areas of Focus

Global Grant (Water and Sanitation)

The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka is participating in D5000 Global Grant GG1523876. This is a grant being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise with several partner clubs, including all 4 clubs in the Hawaii West district. The area of focus being addressed is Water and Sanitation. Three village schools in the new nation of Kosovo in Eastern Europe, where the water is highly polluted or non-existent in the school facilities, have 900 total students in elemen-tary school which have a need for safe water, adequate toilet facili-ties, and regular hygiene education. In the absence of these in most homes, the bare minimum provision is that the public school should provide these for the children during their school day. The goal is to provide equitable community access to safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene, strengthen the ability of communities to develop, fund and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems, support programs that enhance community awareness of the benefits of safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Name: Laura McDowell Steelquist

Spouse: John Anders Steelquist – Punahou 1957

Children: Daughter, Leilani Au (Early Childhood Education University Lab School), married to Chris Au (DOE Area Supervisor), grandsons Shade (17) and Griffin (11) in Kaneohe. Son, John Forrest Steelquist, married to Coni, grandson John Gregory (11) in Houston, Texas

Siblings: My oldest brother James McDowell, Wichita, Kansas is the only one left.

Where do you live: At the very top of Tantalus on Oahu – tiny house,

beautiful view!

Where did you grow up: Denver City, Texas – small town with nothing around but sand and mesquite (kiawe). John grew up in Manoa. I married well!

Favorite thing to do: Rotary, of course! Actually, I’m happiest when I’m plan-ning and putting together parties. I’d love to be able to sit quietly and read a book without guilt – my goal for 2016!

Favorite Movie: No laugh – I’m a Trekkie! Love the new ones. And the

original Star Wars.

Favorite Book: The one in my hand when I need it!

Occupation/Career: I own Hawaiian Islands Medical Corp. We provide wheel-chairs, hospital beds and high-end power and specialty equipment for those who need mobility aids. John is a professor at Chaminade University.

Why do you like being in Rotary? The people – and the opportunity to do things that positively impact people’s lives - things that girl in Texas could never even dream of!

Who inspired you in your life: Nelson Mandela was one of my heroes, but my biggest hero was my daddy. He worked in the oil fields his entire life, made $6000 a year and found a way to put three kids through college because he valued education so highly. He was the kindest and most ethical person I have ever known.

Hobbies: You’re kidding, right? Actually, I love to cook for a crowd! And throw decorations on anything that stays still long enough to get decorated.

Anything else you'd like to add about yourself? I built my business on the Four Way Test. I try to run my life the same way. The “beneficial to all concerned” is usually the tie breaker!

Favorite quote: Almost anything Gandhi said – you’ve already heard and will hear again my favorite Confucius quote at the meeting. But I got a new quote today that I think is one I will repeat to myself frequently this year. It’s from one of my DG classmates in California: “Begin now. Do your best.” Let’s see if it works!

Rotary Spotlight: District Governor Laura Steelquist

Laura and grandson Shade Au at Christmas two years ago. We assembled a Turducken! From Scratch! Shade, who loves to cook as much as I do, had gotten a new boning knife (so did Tutu), so Grandpa showed him how to bone a turkey , then how to bone a duck and then how to bone a chicken. We stuffed the chicken and put it inside the duck and put it inside the turkey and tied it all up (sorta – should have been a tad tighter!) and cooked it! What else would you want to do on Christmas morning?

In Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Extension Month. There is a

good reason why we remind ourselves of the importance of membership

early in every Rotary year: because the job of growing our membership is

one that we can never begin too soon. It is also a job that we can never stop

working on. In order to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be growing!

We have talked for many years about the importance of the family of Ro-

tary. In this Rotary year, I want to make not just the family of Rotary, but

our own Rotary families, a priority in our membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, my wife,

Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We attended the chartering of a new club in Taiwan together, and

she said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she joined that club. And soon, so did a lot of other

people. Now that club has 102 members, and it's the second-largest club in Taiwan.

Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. It addresses the reality that Rotary still

has far more men as members than it does women, and that is something we need to work on. When we bring

more women into Rotary, our clubs become more appealing to prospective female members – and become more

productive as well.

This year we are going to have something new in Rotary: a membership support team pin. This means that if you

invite a new member into Rotary, you get a special pin to wear with your Rotary gearwheel. But we all know

that the job of growing membership doesn't end when a new member joins. It ends only when a new member is

enjoying being a Rotarian and never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs are enjoyable places to be is

a key part of growing membership.

People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay because Rotary is fun to be a part of. So I want to

remind all of you to have fun in your clubs and your districts. Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more

effective when we serve together with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary service, share it with others, and

Light Up Rotary together!

Membership…….. 1.3 Million Rotarians by June 30, 2015……

Family, spouse, partner, children, grandchildren, benefi

ciaries, Rotary alumni……

Aloha, Wonderful D5000 Rotarians! August is Membership Month in Rotary, when we focus even more attention than usual on this critical aspect of Rotary – how do we get and keep more members in a time when so many other offerings are vying for scarce resources of time and treasure? We provide value for the time and money we ask our members to spend. We offer opportunities to give back to the community that they wouldn’t have without Rotary. We offer fellowship with like-minded individuals who become our life-long friends. Success breeds success. I’ve seen examples of this as I’ve visited the first 25 clubs for our official District Governor visits. I’ve inducted four members at a club with enormous success in community service projects and community recognition – and three more visi-tors to the meeting expressed interest in joining Rotary that day. And three of those four new members were in-vited to join by members who had been Rotarians for less than a year. New members bring in new members. So the small club who brings in one new member has just expanded their circle of potential members enormously! I LOVE to induct new members – and I have inducted several over the past four weeks. And I’m even more excited because Presidents are emailing to let me know they would like for me to induct a new member (ok – there’s an-other club with four new members ready) when I come to their clubs in August. What a great way to celebrate Membership Month! Change someone’s life – invite them to join Rotary!
