EDITORSNew beginnings in the hive of learning Every moment at PLC this year has been a new beginning, whether it has been the welcoming of a new Principal or the opening of the new Senior School. For us it was stepping into the new roles of 2016 Kookaburra Editors.

In an effort to continue this theme of new beginnings, we have created a modern and alternative look based on geometric beehive shapes in addition to some personal and fun touches to the publication. For example the new 2016 leavers awards, the addition of quotations and final statements and the Year highlights page. We really tried to make this year’s Kookaburra memorable and personal to all students, in particular the leavers of 2016.

We have enjoyed this role immensely and have Ms Freel to thank for support and guidance throughout this process.

The production of Kookaburra has been an amazing journey that we were lucky enough to share with each other. We believe this has given us an opportunity to grow stronger as a team and in our friendship in this collaboration.

The hexagonal theme throughout the pages of this year’s Kookaburra came to life through the desire to visually reflect the idea of Community. Our inspiration for this theme was to reflect our experiences and sense of Community at PLC in the symbol of a beehive. In our opinion, one of PLC’s defining qualities is our sense of Community and togetherness. Following the centenary year of 2015 we sought to continue this feeling of celebration and togetherness through our innovative layout.

A bee’s home is made of tightly packed cells in the shape of hexagons. In the PLC hive, the bee is symbolic to us of the nurturing, supporting people who make up this community. We as PLC students are all bees working together with a common goal, ours being to gain a valuable education while making life-long friends and a positive impact. The beehive theme reminds us that there is no “I” in teamwork. We believe this encapsulates PLC’s motto ‘Labore et Honore’ perfectly.

We hope the girls of PLC can treasure the Kookaburra as a reminder of the unofficial

sisters and parents they have in this big PLC family. As the parting Year 12 girls face the

challenges and excitements of a new beginning next year beyond the PLC

Community, we hope Kookaburra will always be a reminder of the loving, supporting beehive that PLC is.

PRINCIPAL

What a privilege it has been to step into the role of Principal at PLC It has been a pleasure getting to know the girls, they are smart yet fun-loving, humble and, most importantly, caring.

PLC has had a spectacular sporting season, making history by winning the IGSSA Overall Champion School Trophy. We were also clear winners in rowing and for the first time in more than 30 years won the IGSSA Cross Country trophy.

Academically our school has continued to go from strength to strength with the 2015 leavers’ results for Diploma being the best on record. Layneisha Sgro was named WA’s Top Indigenous Scholar, an outstanding accomplishment. We also

celebrated the triumph of our three General Exhibition winners Claire Breidahl, Morgan Bowen and Penny Hollingdale. In 2016 we entered teams in the World Scholar’s Cup competition and were delighted when our Senior team came second globally and first in the Australian American region. The Junior team were awarded Silver in the Overall Scholar Division.

Our facilities were greatly enhanced this year with the opening of the Beth Blackwood Senior School, boasting state-of-the-art learning spaces along with private study areas that promote our culture of developing independent life-long learners. Within the Senior School our Old Collegians welcomed the Year 12 girls into the OCA Year 12 Common

Room with cupcakes and other treats. Along with the internal facilities, Beverly’s Café, opening onto the beautiful quad, has been a welcome addition for students, staff and families alike.

Late in Term 4 our soon to be built Wellbeing Centre was formally named ‘PLC Lighthouse’ through a student competition. The centre will be completed by the end of 2017 and will be a beacon of light on our campus, offering a facility which will host all Health and Wellbeing lessons along with many other programs that work to support our girls as they transition through adolescence.

Finally, the words of Hillary Clinton in her 2016 concession speech remind us of our purpose: “To all the little girls who are watching this right now – Never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.” Thank you to all in our PLC community who support our girls, and little boys, as they pursue and achieve their dreams.

It’s now or never for the Leavers of 2016 This year has been one of change, achievement, friendship and fun at PLC. There is no doubt that our community is stronger than ever as we enter the second century of PLC’s life – what a year it has been!

We can’t quite believe how quickly our time at PLC has flown by, it seems like just yesterday we were nervously arriving at the slipway for the first time, tartan skirt to our ankles and pristine white panamas on our heads. Since the very beginning, our year group has been bonded together and it is hard to believe our adventure has come to a close, this year seeming to be the perfect ending to such an amazing time.

Our year has been privileged enough to be the inaugural beneficiaries of the Year 12 Common Room in the new Beth Blackwood Senior School. This space has given us a place to relax and de-stress amid the intensity of our final year. The Common Room has been a place of quick power naps during study time, stacking dishes while doing some last-minute revision and having

a chat whilst toasting sandwiches and sipping hot coffees. An incredible surprise when walking into the common room for the first time was looking up and seeing our 2016 motto ‘Now or Never’ frosted on to the glass of the classroom above. This motto has been especially applicable to our cohort as we have experienced so much together for the last time. From the Ball in February to our Year 12 Pyjama Party and mass participation in Inter-House events, the graduating class of 2016 has laughed,

danced, stressed, crammed and shared endless amounts of fun and crazy times together, creating memories that will last forever.

Not only has ‘Now or Never’ encouraged enthusiasm across Year 12, it has encouraged participation across all year groups here at PLC. With this in mind, 2016 has definitely strengthened the PLC community and further labeled us as a ‘school to beat’.

Girls have showcased their incredible range of abilities on the stage, track and in the classroom, resulting in many personal and School-wide achievements.

To Dr Hadwen, you have had such a positive impact on us and PLC this year, bringing new energy and fun to our halls. It has been a privilege to have been a part of your first year here and to share so many moments with you as our journey

ends and your journey begins.

their understanding of themselves as learners. Above all, the joy and high level of engagement the students exhibit throughout is a highlight for parents and teachers alike.

In addition to Learning Journeys, parents have been invited to facilitate learning in mathematics in specific year groups. This year we have trialed online bookings for parents to participate in regular classroom lessons. The students’ sparkling eyes bore testament to their enjoyment in sharing their knowledge, understanding and problem-solving prowess, as well as their mathematical reasoning. These opportunities provide a bridge between past and current teaching and learning practices in the ever-changing field of education.

Dr Donald E. Edgar, who was the Foundation Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies, wrote: “The purpose of a school is to help a family to educate a child.” (The Patchwork Nation 2001) This resonated throughout the world and is as true today as it was when first written. Relationships are what matters most and it is to this end that we will continue to provide meaningful opportunities and keep growing together in honouring our students and their families.

Students are always excited when opportunities arise to share their learning with friends and family. Regular invitations are extended for the community to become involved in a number of ways. Student-led Chapels, Assemblies, Arts Day, Grandparents and Special Friends Days, and three-way conferences, are just some of the regular events on our School calendar.

One of the most eagerly anticipated events is that of the Learning Journey. This allows parents to participate in their child’s learning across a range of experiences, in all subjects. By involving families in their children’s learning we build understanding which, in turn, develops an appreciation of what we are about, what matters and what we are trying to achieve for each and every one of the students. Through this process the students become the teachers and thus further develop and strengthen

The focus this year was on developing strong connections between the girls. To achieve this I decided to create a buddy system for the new Year 7s with some of the older girls. This led to numerous emails passed back and forth between buddies, allowing for new friendships to flourish.

The amount of enthusiasm that the girls across all year groups show, along with their welcoming attitudes, has not failed to astonish me. Through the Big Sister initiative these attitudes are encouraged, giving the students of PLC time to bond with other year groups whilst feeling safe

and comfortable. It also offers the older girls a chance to influence and inspire the younger girls, encouraging their own growth as young women.

Thank you to all the Year Co-ordinators and the girls who made this a successful and memorable year.

Everyone loves a Big SisterThroughout the year I have seen the younger girls in the Junior School showcase their maturity and energy, the Middle School girls build up confidence and the Senior School girls develop their leadership skills.

PLC prides itself on its strong community, with connections in and out of school life. The Big Sister Programme allows for these bonds to form and this is an aspect of PLC that is widely acknowledged, separating us from other schools.

The idea behind the Big Sister Programme is to connect girls within the School, eliminating the barriers between the year groups and the tiers of the School. The Big Sister activities started with morning teas between Year groups. This resulted in immediate friendships and laughter coming from every part of the school. A variety of activities followed across the year, ranging from wink murderer, capture the flag, quizzes and, for some, lunchtimes in the Year 12 Common Room.

various activities in our day that keep us busy can have a profound impact in terms of wellbeing and performance.

In true Olympic spirit, the girls have demonstrated the ideals of de Coubertin’s motto, striving for greater heights and continuing to develop the skills to be stronger in themselves. They may well have been faster or more efficient, too. However, while speed is inherent in the ‘faster’ of the Olympic motto, I hope the girls also understand that varying speed can be a good thing. I hope that on their journey throughout this year, the girls have taken notice of what is around them; that they have taken in the view and that they have been mindful.

Albert Einstein once said: “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” What is important in another busy year is that the girls have certainly kept moving; they’ve ridden up hills with strength; they’ve travelled with speed with the wind behind them and, ultimately, they’ve been able to keep their bicycles upright and to maintain their balance. Long may they continue to ride!

In an effort to learn to rest, recover and reset when things may not go according to plan, we have practised mindfulness and other ‘resetting’ strategies.

Middle School tops medal tallyOur girls’ drive and commitment to be the best they can be constantly amazes me as they strive for excellence and persevere in the face of challenge. In an Olympic year, it is apt to recall the motto proposed by founder of the modern Olympics Pierre de Coubertin in 1894, ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’, because that is what our Middle School girls have done!

Our girls have embodied the ‘higher’ by setting themselves challenging goals and aspiring to be the best versions of themselves. The ‘stronger’ is reflected in our continued emphasis on wellbeing and, in a first this year, the launch of our Blackwatch Club for Year 7 and 8 girls. Mondays and Wednesdays have been abuzz with energy as girls go in all directions to participate and represent our school in physical pursuits ranging from our more well-established sports, through to cheer-leading and formation skipping! There is no doubt that our girls continue to lead busy, fulfilling lives, but even the fastest athletes need time to wind down!

The Year 11s enjoyed finishing Year 10 with a Christmas party where each House decorated a tree. Scotch College joined us on the evening.

One of the highlights for the girls was the Year 11 Dance held at the Mounts Bay Sailing Club. It was a balmy night and the setting – overlooking beautiful Matilda Bay towards the fabulous city skyline – was a wonderful background for the sparkles, diamonds and other decorations for the James Bond-themed function.

The Year 10s have enjoyed moving into the new building and the amazing new spaces to ‘hang out’ and study. The Personal Project had the girls try projects that tied in wellbeing and the environment. There was a very diverse range of projects and some of them were simply mind blowing. Their Social, with the theme Friday the 13th, provided a great opportunity for the girls to mix with the Scotch boys and the evening finished with a war cry from both groups of students.

With their Quest experiences, the girls had a good rest before they embarked on their newly chosen subjects for Year 11.

Finally, when you read this report in years to come, think about all the opportunities you have been given and pass it forward. Become an Old Collegian who also gives back to PLC so that those in the future can also enjoy their wonderful school.

Building on Senior School opportunity The highlight of this year was the opening of the Beth Blackwood Senior School. It was with much anticipation and excitement that we were finally able to enter the new building and start making it our own.

For the Year 12s it was especially exciting because they had their very own Common Room and balcony overlooking the beautiful new Quad to enjoy.

The Old Collegians’ Association provided the girls with new cutlery and dishes to start them off in the Common Room, as well as giving them a beautiful morning tea to welcome them into the space for which the OCA had raised funds.

Other year groups in the Senior School have been encouraged to share the new space on the Quad.

Year 12s enjoyed their splendid Ball at Fraser’s in Kings Park. It is such a privilege and honour to have our Ball at a magnificent venue with beautiful views of the city.

This year we held our PJ party in the new Common Room so the space is being well utilised.

Girls have enjoyed the privileges associated with being in Year 12 and the sense of independence the school provides as we prepare them for the next stage of their lives. Phoebe Johnson, our Head Prefect, and Amelia Mantle, our Deputy Head Prefect, have been wonderful leaders and found the right balance in supporting their peers as well as the School. Their quiet but very effective leadership style has gained the respect of all the staff and students alike.

A highlight of the School calendar was the Inter-House Academics Competition, which included more than 250 Middle and Senior School girls. The wide range of subjects on offer (from mathematics and science to the arts and humanities) allowed an unprecedented number of students to celebrate academic achievement in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

2016 has been an incredible year for co-curricular academic activities, with PLC students achieving state, national, and global accolades in competitions such as OzCLO, the Honouring Vietnam Veterans Film Competition and the World Scholar’s Cup. We have also been fortunate enough to celebrate success in the Australian Chemistry Quiz, ICAS Science and Maths competitions, Have Sum Fun and countless other events.

Some of the most rewarding and enjoyable academic events for PLC girls this year were the team competitions that allowed them to approach challenges in collaborative and creative ways. Events such as the Tournament of the Minds, the da Vinci Decathlon, and the World Scholar’s Cup made learning a truly joyful and exciting experience – an aspect of education that we can sometimes lose sight of when assessment and exams are looming.

I wish the class of 2016 all the best in their future academic endeavors. To the rest of the students who are fortunate enough to have more years at PLC ahead of them, I strongly encourage you to explore and appreciate the wealth of opportunities, resources, and support that academic life at PLC offers.

Academic achievement you can touchThroughout the entire year, something that has never ceased to amaze me is the determination and dedication with which PLC girls approach every aspect of their studies. This diligence does not simply emerge around exam time, or the night before an assignment is due. It can be seen, heard and even felt around the school every day. This is undoubtedly due to the passion shown by our teachers, whose infectious enthusiasm for their subjects motivates us to persevere in our studies.

This year PLC students have demonstrated their willingness to take advantage of every opportunity and truly embraced the 2016 motto ‘Now or Never’. Both in the classroom and in the co-curricular sphere, PLC girls have thrown themselves into academic life. Among many performances on the Music Department’s calendar was the annual Quarry Concert Under the Stars in which the Pipe Band, Chorale and PLC/Scotch Symphony Orchestra performed impressively for the crowd.

The Pipe Band was lucky enough to travel internationally to the Unites States for the Virginia Tattoo, where band members performed exceptionally.

Meanwhile the PLC orchestras performed at the WA Schools’ Orchestra Festival, with the PLC/Scotch Combined Symphony Orchestra receiving the highest ranking of Outstanding.

The Stage Band performed at the WA Schools’ Jazz Festival and received top rankings for all aspects of its performance.

The Chorale continues to perform beautifully, singing at many events to an excellent standard.

In the visual arts, there was an explosion of colour at the Old Collegians’ Association Art Exhibition this year with a stunning display of students’ talents.

Last, but certainly not least, was Arts Day. It kicked off with a staff performance of epic proportions. Although it was Dr Hadwen’s first Arts Day here at PLC, she didn’t shy away to making an entrance on a Harley-Davidson as Sandra Dee from Grease!

The Year 12 performance also shone with some of the best musical hits to grace the stage. It was as incredible as it was nerve-racking for me to lead and choreograph! However, nothing could have been done without the help of my Year 12 family. Every single one of them put their hand up to participate in the performance. It was a standout day for me that I will truly cherish forever.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed in some way to the arts this year. I am extremely honoured to have led the girls this year as Arts Captain and I wish Sophie McDonald the best of luck as Arts Captain for the 2017 school year.

Spotlight shines on creativity and participationHow lucky we are to be blessed with endless opportunities to be involved in the arts at PLC. This year has been one of excellent standards, creativity and participation among students in the form of performances and exhibitions.

The amazing Drama Department is constantly producing incredible performances.

We started the year with an absolutely stellar performance of Legally Blonde The Musical. About 60 PLC girls, and three boys (from Scotch College, Christ Church Grammar School and Hale School) participated. For three months they worked and rehearsed incredibly hard to showcase what was an epic performance over the course of four sold-out shows. A spectacular live band played the music for the production.

Additionally, we were lucky enough to have the Year 12 International Baccalaureate curriculum production Boo To The Moon, the Year 11s’ Daughters of Lear and the Middle School play Lord of the Flies. All were extremely successful performances of a very professional standard. The sets, lighting and costuming displayed a culmination of efforts by students and staff.

This year’s Dance Showcase, Through Breath and Form, was an amazing production and showcase of the talented Middle School Dance Collective and Dance Company. It was also a testament to the talented staff we have here at PLC.

PLC’s Dance Company attended the Independent Girls’ Schools Sporting Association Dance Festival, which showcased an outstanding standard of performance. In addition, a selected number of PLC girls who graduated in 2015 were chosen to perform in Performing Arts Perspectives – the highest standard of WACE set solos and original solo pieces.

When Term 2 rolled around we stepped up another notch. PLC managed to win three out of the four sports.

Our runners dominated the cross country and broke a 30 year drought by winning the overall trophy. The sportsmanship and encouragement evident on race day made me extremely proud to be a member of Team PLC. The squad also won Best Overall Girls School at the State Cross Country Championships.

There’s something very special about our rowing shed. Maybe it’s the 5.30 mornings, the extra weekend sessions, or the sense of belonging to a fiercely determined sisterhood. We cleaned up again this year, winning all major trophies at the Head of the River Regatta. The first eight won a close HOR race ahead of fierce rivals MLC and all crews performed exceptionally well to claim the overall season trophy once again.

PLC also won the overall hockey pennant and we congratulate the PLC/Scotch hockey team on a commendable tour to New Zealand. Our netballers finished equal third.

In Term 3 the success continued with a first place in soccer, second in basketball and sixth in athletics.

Going into Term 4 two points behind St Mary’s in the Overall Champion School Trophy, softball secured a huge win for the overall softball pennant and waterpolo second.

Thank you to the respective sports captains, co-ordinators, coaches and PE staff for all the hard work and dedication you put in this year. These guys are the heart and soul of Team PLC. Congratulations to the 2017 sports captain, Emily Bradley. I’m sure under her leadership Team PLC will continue to be fierce competitors.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported me in this role this year. It has been such a privilege to watch the PLC sporting stars shine brighter than ever before.

A Champion Team and a Team of ChampionsCan you believe it! 2016 will forever go down in history as the year that a group of remarkable girls and a series of stunning results earned Team PLC it’s first ever Overall Independent Girls Schools Sports Association Championship crown.

It was clear from the get-go that Team PLC was a force to be reckoned with and our sporting spirit soared right up until the very end when our softball and water polo teams produced under enormous pressure to secure the prestigious IGSSA title.

When you add the Head of the River success enjoyed by our oar-inspiring rowers it has been a sporting year PLC will never forget.

The introduction of the Blackwatch Sports Club always meant 2016 would usher in a new sporting era of competitiveness and participation, but Team PLC went even further by combining effort and achievement to celebrate a host of major victories.

Every sport enjoyed improved results, every athlete achieved a personal target and our girls welcomed

and embraced their opportunities for health, fitness, camaraderie and enjoyment.

We kicked off 2016 on the back of winning the 2015 water polo season

for the third consecutive year and we were runners-up in softball.

On the courts, the tennis players managed to come away with

the overall tennis pennant, the volleyballers came second, and

in the pool the swim team finished eighth with the Year 7s winning their

year group.

Every sport had improved results, every athlete achieved a personal target and our sporting spirit soared.

This year has been an incredible ride, proving that the PLC community is thriving and as compassionate as ever. Through friendship and teamwork, no goal was too high, no challenge too tough. Thousands of quiet hours were committed, as hundreds of service journeys flourished when girls gave of themselves and received so much in return. PLC continued to strengthen our relationship with UnitingCare West, meeting challenges through our appeals such as Operation Santa, Winter Warmer Appeal, and the Care Packages Appeal for the Women’s Refuge. I have discovered that when PLC is invited to raise awareness, advocate and act, the response is always impressively immense.

Students wholeheartedly engaged in challenges this year, including Live Below the Line, 40 Hour Famine, Walk for Sexual Abuse, Plastic Free Week, Dress Less for Refugees, Relay For Life and other initiatives. MAD week this year turned the Quad into a hub of passionate advocates, whose interest in reconciliation, social justice, and the environment was extremely inspiring and humbling.

At PLC, our privilege allows for opportunities that broaden horizons and take that step outside our comfort zone and community bubble. Many contributed to the family service projects at PLC and lifted those around us with their amazing efforts. Others took up the opportunity to embark on a service immersion tour, with girls travelling to Cambodia, Tanzania and the Kimberley.

Thank you to the dedicated staff who work tirelessly to enable such wonderful opportunities and thank you to all the students and families. Your endless compassion and kindness was felt by many.

Awe-inspiring efforts in compassion and kindness“I was in awe at the number of individuals willing to express to me and other leukemia sufferers that they are here to help and want to be part of such a giving community. My hair was so special to me, but seeing other people rid themselves of theirs made mine feel less of a loss.”

These are the words of Kate Sinclair, a Year 12 student who was diagnosed with leukemia this year. She is also the girl who inspired our incredible PLC community to ignite the “8 for Kate” campaign, as a part of the World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukemia Foundation.

Hundreds of participants and donors filled the Quad with music, laughter, the buzz of shavers and the snipping of hair. I’m sure many of us will agree it was a memorable, powerful moment that encapsulates service leadership at PLC this year.

CAPTAIN REPORTBOARDING HOUSE

It was an incredible two days with the girls choosing to drag their mattresses out from the cabins and sleep under the stars.

The boarders participated in many sporting activities during the year, most famously in our boarders’ football team. While this wasn’t our most successful season, our Sports Prefect Annabel Wilson always made sure it was fun. During the Rio Olympics, Annabel organised a running challenge between the year groups, which encouraged them to undertake as much exercise as possible. The year groups became extremely competitive in this, with the Year 10s eventually taking the gold medal.

Boarders are extremely giving people and this was seen throughout the year when the girls participated in many service activities to give back to the community. Our Service Prefect Tahnee Carter ran a Clean Up Australian programme, for which girls collected rubbish in Peppermint Grove. We also entered a team of boarders into the well-known Relay for Life, organised by an outstanding Year 12 student, Nadia Bennier. This year we allowed girls from Years 7-12 to participate in this wonderful service opportunity, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

During the year we also organised our very successful PLC and Scotch Boarders Ball for the students in Year 11 and 12. Our Deputy Senior Boarder Maddy Reid and Arts Prefect Georgia Morrell arranged various activities including yoga, a photo competition, Friday fun night, World Vision service opportunities and themed dinners at Easter and during the Olympics.

It has been such an honour to be the Senior Boarder for 2016. I am so happy to be part of the close boarding community and to have shared the time with girls from many diverse backgrounds. This amazing experience has given me friendships that I will have for life.

Best Buddies in Boarding HouseMy aim for 2016 was to create a closer Boarding House community and to help form relationships between the younger and older years. This was supported by the launch of the Best Buddies Programme at the end of 2015. As part of this programme, each incoming Year 12 student was assigned a new girl for the coming year, wrote a letter to them and sent it to their home. Once the girls came the following year, the Year 12s took the time to get to know them and helped them settle in.

The year started off with an adventurous getaway to Serpentine to celebrate our annual boarding closed weekend. This was an amazing opportunity for the girls to get to know each other and bond together as a Boarding House. Everyone was split into teams and competed against each other in numerous activities that included pool games, soccer matches, quizzes and performing skits.

At each sporting event we’ve been led by Sports Co-ordinators Eloise Wiffen and Eva Annand, and had some fantastic action shots taken by Multi-media Co-ordinator Myra Shah.

I have always been proud of Baird’s academic pursuits. This year with the guidance of Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator Tabitha Malet, we had multiple successes in these competitions. In addition, Baird reclaimed the House Academic Trophy for the fourth time in a row.

Finishing 2016 with a bang, Arts Day was Baird’s time to shine! Every member of the brilliant Baird House Choir couldn’t stop smiling as we belted out Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’. Our House Choir Co-ordinator Olivia Lowson conducted us to first place! Alongside Olivia, our Performing Arts Co-ordinator Lauren McTavish was pivotal in securing Baird’s spot as second overall for the Arts Day Cup.

A massive thank you goes to our House Advisor Mr Donaldson and to each of the 2016 Baird House Tutors for their support throughout the year.

Baird success Taylor madeTaylor Swift’s hit song Bad Blood alludes to the importance of having a ‘squad’ – a group of people so supportive of each other that nothing can hurt them. The camaraderie within Baird House this year has been exactly that, which is why our ‘Baird Blood’ slogan was worn with pride amongst the Year 12s. This all-inclusive give-it-a-go attitude led to incredible results this year for our mighty House.

We kicked off 2016 with the Swimming Carnival and it was exciting to see the Baird bay light up in orange for the first event of the year. While we finished 6th overall, the Middle School is looking promising for the future, coming an impressive third. The number of girls who took the plunge and gave it their all, contributing to the constant stream of orange swimming caps, was truly inspiring.

Next was Cross Country when we finished third in both Middle and Senior School, and placed fourth overall. Baird also came fourth in Inter-House Athletics. Although Athletics started with a cold morning, the day quickly came alive as events got under way, and again the orange team excelled with their participation and enthusiasm.

Carmichael went out strong on Arts Day! The sheer talent of girls in our House is outstanding, and the participation and inclusiveness was admirable. All the hard work done in the lead-up to the day really paid off with polished and exciting performances and we placed third in House Choir. The adjudicators’ description of Carmichael’s performance as ‘exciting’ and ‘energetic’ perfectly captures our spirit. A particular thank you to Brooke Gagiero, our Performing Arts Co-ordinator, and Lara Stewart, the House Choir Co-ordinator.

A lot of your work goes unseen, but somehow you helped make the best day of the year even more spectacular than usual.

All these moments and events were captured by our wonderful Multi-media Co-ordinator Eliza Perkins, who did a spectacular job throughout the year.

In my final year I have really come to appreciate how much the support of Carmichael has meant to me. Amongst the craziness of Year 12, this family is something that constantly grounds me – each of you have made my day on at least one occasion this year and it has been such a privilege to experience that.

The biggest thank you to our House Advisor Mrs Letherbarrow and my House Tutor Ms Barnsley, who have helped and supported me through everything this year, as well as my gorgeous House Tutor Group – you are such an incredible bunch and you will do amazing things!

Blue House home to happy ‘family’What a busy year 2016 has been for our Big Blue House!

Carmichael started off with a splash in the Swimming Carnival, and it was so inspiring to see every girl diving head first into what was an amazing start to the year. As always, the girls lived up to our motto ‘Play the Game’, and took on board the challenge to maximize participation with contagious enthusiasm. Their hard work paid off. We finished fourth overall and first in diving.

The Cross Country had a sea of blue and some very red faces crossing the finish line. Whilst we didn’t place overall, at least one Carmichael girl placed from every House Tutor Group – a tremendous effort from our blue bloods.

The Athletics Carnival concluded our sporting efforts for the year. Despite the cold weather, every girl was amazing at helping the day run smoothly. Year 12s Lara Stewart, Isobel Palmer, Madi Noble and Mia Simpson dominated in the 4x100 in the highlight of the day! In House Marching we pulled it together and finished in fourth place.

CAPTAIN REPORTFERGUSON

Arts Day was the day that topped off the amazing year of Ferguson House. It began with a history-making bang by winning House Dance. Biggest of thankyous to Sasha McKee, our Performing Arts Co-ordinator, for getting everyone involved and for putting the whole dance together. Ferguson showcased an amazing Choir performance led by Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi, our House Choir Co-ordinator, who did an incredible job and dedicated so much time and work to the choir. We finished off the day in celebrations, as we placed third for the overall Arts Day Cup.

I would also like to thank Sarah Willis, our Multi-media Co-ordinator, who did a great job of capturing all these great moments throughout the year and Grace Moscou, our Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator for all her hard work organising and helping out the younger girls.

We couldn’t have had such a great year as a House without Mr Saunders, the heart of the House, and we certainly wouldn’t have won House Dance without his spectacular solo! I would also like to thank Mr Kerrigan for stepping in as House Advisor in Term 1 and helping the House so much.

To my Year 12s, thank you for all the help you’ve given to the House across all our years and for all our amazing memories together in Fergo. I wish the best of luck to Annie-May Jannings, Ferguson House Captain for 2017, I know you will be extraordinary. Thank you to every single one of you Ferguson girls this year, as it has been filled with moments that make me proud to have lead such an incredible House.

Fergo full of spiritWhat a huge year it has been for Ferguson House, a record-breaking, trophy-winning year full of House spirit that could tear up any track, pool or field. 2016 was the year that Ferguson became unstoppable.

We made a huge splash at the first event of the year, the Inter-House Swimming Carnival. There were red caps everywhere and everyone gave each race their absolute all, allowing us to take away the first place trophy for Senior School Swimming.

Next we had the Cross Country and following a great warm-up, pump-up and a bit of face paint we saw the girls take off from the start line with no looking back, finishing the day with third place.

The Athletics Carnival was a highlight of the year for Ferguson as we sprinted our way towards the top, coming out with a second place finish. All the Fergo girls showed amazing House spirit cheering everyone on and we had a great finish to the day with the relays, especially the Year 11 teams who dominated on the track.

We couldn’t have done any of these sporting events without the hard work and

encouragement from our amazing Sports Co-ordinators Sophia Wehr and Issy Grist.

CAPTAIN REPORTMCNEIL

The final big event of the year was Arts Day. Singing superstar Isy Cole conducted a stirring rendition of Like a Prayer in the House Choir Competition, which was a result of weeks of hard work and dedication. Speaking of hard work, our Performing Arts Co-ordinator, Sophie Rodda, did a magnificent job in organising our girls and ensuring we had an abundance of incredible entries across all categories. This paid off with McNeil taking out the Arts Day Cup in an exciting end to an exciting day.

Throughout the year, House Academic and Public Speaking and Debating Competitions kept our girls busy. These events were effortlessly made possible by our awesome Co-ordinator Madeline Woolgar, who made sure speeches were ready and girls knew the difference between first and third speaker. Capturing moments throughout the year was our Multi-media Co-ordinator Anna Ranford, who worked the camera and could always be relied upon for some action shots.

I have had an absolute ball this year and there was honestly nothing more I could have asked of you girls. You all brought the spirit, passion and participation, which have allowed for sustained successes across the year. Thank you for putting up with my excessive use of yellow power points and rev-up speeches! I owe a massive thank you to mother hen, Mrs Stewart, for being such a huge support this year as well as my Year 12 Tutor Group – or rather 23 sisters. I wish younger girls all the luck for the remainder of your years in McNeil and hope you continue to smile, laugh and thrive, as I have been fortunate enough to witness this year. Victory or death!

McNeil the real dealMcNeil’s 2016 kicked off in the pool as girls adorned their yellow caps and tried their hand at freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and the ever-popular noodle relay at the Swimming Carnival. The atmosphere was buzzing and cheers of ‘Victory or Death’ echoed around the stadium as girls swam their way to podium finishes. A fantastic day was capped off with a first place finish, well and truly starting the year with a bang.

The next event was the Cross Country. Taking a trip back to the ’80s and drawing inspiration from Survivor hit Eye of the Tiger, our girls ran their yellow hearts out. We well and truly rose ‘up to the challenge of our rivals’ in the ‘thrill of the fight’, and ended up taking out first place.

The Athletics Carnival had our McNeilians participating in a variety of track and field events ranging from javelin to high jump and the competitive running events. With a sensational attitude and glowing grins, our girls ran, jumped and threw to an Olympic-inspired standard! The final event of the day was the marching competition when we marched to create a

moving game of noughts and crosses whilst passionately chanting “left, left, victory or

death!” Our creativity engaged the judges and we were stoked with a first place

finish. The trophy for first overall in the athletics component of the day also

left in McNeil’s hands. Our results in all three sporting carnivals throughout the year would not have been possible without

CAPTAIN REPORTROSS

Inter-House sport also led to success for Ross, as the Year 11 and 12 House Tutor Groups showed their leadership potential with their excellent participation, leading to second and tied-first place respectively.

In Inter-House Academics our Middle School girls proved their academic prowess, taking first place for both the Science and General Knowledge sections, with their general knowledge results being the only 100% result of the week.

Arts Day was, as usual, one of the most fast-paced days of the year as girls performed and created with all their spirit. Beginning with our Asia-inspired House Dance, the girls showed their creative abilities with notable performances from our Senior School in Dance and our Middle School girls in Music. We also had a number of crazy and colourful cake entries finding great success. Our wonderful day culminated with our Choir performance of Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac and the announcement of 2017’s House Captain.

All our achievements throughout the year would not have been possible without the help of our House Co-ordinators and their hard work. I would also like to thank our House Tutors and House Advisor, Ms Macdonald. The students may be the face of Ross but without the constant support and dedication of our tutors behind the scenes, we would not have had the success we enjoyed this year.

I hope that every Ross House in the future will continue to ‘Vedi, Vini, Vici’ – come, see and conquer.

Big contribution from small HouseFollowing Ross’s inaugural year, Maggie Joyner and the Ross House of 2015 left big shoes to fill – a challenge we rose to throughout the year. We continued our aim of remaining “a small house but a big family” with our girls putting their running, academic and dancing feet forward at every opportunity.

Swimming Carnival started the Inter-House sports activities, with our participation rate being one of the highest we saw all year.

Cross Country was also an excellent show of Ross’s unity, from our whole House warm-up – using cheers written especially by the class of 2015 – to the final Year 12 race, where I can personally say I felt the whole House was running with me.

At the Athletics Carnival, marching was a particular highlight as we marched, chanted and executed formations all the way to third place – a result with which the whole House could be ecstatic.

With topics covering political correctness, compulsory voting and refugees, Inter-House Debating gave us a thought-provoking start to the

year. Year 12s rose to their leadership roles in Inter-House activities this year, with high

levels of participation, leading to excellent results in the first round of Debating.

The girls embraced the Year 12 motto for 2016 of ‘We can Stewart’ and never gave up, finishing with an overall fourth place.

Debating and Public Speaking Co-ordinator Sarah Hatch encouraged the girls to argue their way through Inter-House Debating competitions.

Thanks also to Alice Reilly, our Multi-media Co-ordinator, who did a wonderful job capturing many memorable photos and videos of the girls in green throughout the year.

Last up was Arts Day, the most anticipated day of the year. The time and effort put in for the many weeks leading up to the day did not go unnoticed, with many Stewart entries on show throughout the School. Harriet Mactier, Stewart’s Performing Arts Co-ordinator, led the girls to second place in the House Dance competition, in a very well-taught and choreographed African-themed dance. The day went out on an all-time high with Stewart placing an awesome second in House Choir, singing Fire and the Flood under the guidance of Choir Co-ordinator Julianne Dutton, who put in so much time and effort that really shone through on the day.

I would like to thank our Year 12 Tutor Ms Kelley, and House Advisors Ms Clucas and Ms Honeychurch, whose support and assistance throughout the year made it so much more enjoyable. The Year 12 Tutor Group has shared so many special memories from the beginning. Stewart’s motto ‘Through Difficulties to the Heights’ was certainly embraced throughout the year and without a doubt will continue to guide Stewart girls in the future.

Girls in green light the wayWhat a year this has been. Stewart has dominated in hard work, dedication and commitment, with all the girls’ efforts paying off. This year has been one of many achievements, both individually and for the House and has been a true demonstration of outstanding House spirit.

Stewart started off the year as soon as the light turned green, straight off the blocks and into the Swimming Carnival. Whether swimming, diving or noodle racing, every single girl put in their absolute best and this showed in an overall second place. We couldn’t have done it without the enthusiasm and support from the stands and the determination to succeed in the pool. Without the organisation of Sport Co-ordinators Zara Wege and Meg Dempster, the day would never have run so smoothly.

The Cross Country had a huge amount of House pride. Participation levels were high as each and every Stewart girl ran, jogged or walked across the line. It was amazing to see the support shown among the House to help get each other up those dreaded hills and across the line.

On Athletics Day, Challenge Stadium was flooded green on both the track and the

field. It was a real showcase of Stewart pride as many skills were displayed in

all areas from shot put to sprints.

2016 has well and truly been a year of Summers domination.The opening of the school year saw the first chance for the Summers haze to take its effect, with the swimming carnival consisting of outstanding achievements, both individually and as a team.

Next was the annual Inter-House Cross Country carnival, with our determination paying off, placing 1st in the middle school and 2nd overall.

At the athletics carnival we saw purple shirts turn to purple blurs with every single Summerite out on the track and aiming high. The day would not have gone so smoothly without the help from our incredible sports co-ordinators, Olivia Italiano and Charlotte Hill. This year Summers took out 2nd place in the marching, 1st place in the middle school and 3rd overall.

And now to the final show of the Summers euphoria, Arts Day. Summers took home a very impressive 3rd place in house dance, a big thank you to Lily Gherbaz, our performing arts co-ordinator for 2016, your energy and enthusiasm

Solstice

Solstice of stillingwhere a planet hangs

at its furthest edgein stillbirth silence

some solar clock tracks us downlike fleeing future-tives

dragging another year from usits lens never lingering

on stillness, or the wonderthat encroaches,

the unspoken that nears each day the old skateboard run,

the hill we’d thrill downin the middle of night

when the hours did not count.
