ABOUT THE COMPANYKooler Industries is a Filipino-owned company dedicated to manufacturing and leasing drinking water solutions. Far from its origin as a jukebox business named Philippine Amusement Enterprises, Kooler Industries is now the number one water dispensing company in the country.
Since 1972, Kooler has been providing world-class, eco-friendly products and services in the Philippines that are not just cost-effective but quality assured. It offers a wide range of solutions for every Filipino’s drinking water requirements from water stations down to the familiar hot and cold water dispensers and water purifiers that are available for sale or leasing.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION Pursuing its objective to protect public health and promote eradication of material wastes, Kooler Industries is now certified to ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System).
Kooler Industries has always been a company that is compliant with quality standards, says Patrick Cua, General Manager of Kooler Industries. Cua also believes that obtaining ISO 14001:2015 is beneficial for any organization especially for its impact on electric consumption, proper waste segregation and strategic approach to environmental management.
ISO 14001 is an internationally agreed standard that sets out the requirements for environmental management system. It helped Kooler Industries significantly improved their environmental performance including the efficient use of resources and reduction of wastes.
Through SGS Philippines, Kooler Industries was able to optimize and re-engineer their products which included the redesigning of the refrigeration system in their water dispensers that resulted to at least 40 % reduction on energy consumption per unit.

With the revision of the ISO 14001 standard, it is important that Kooler Industries adhere to the revisions and update our compliance, says Patrick Cua, General Manager of Kooler Industries.
• Aside from the optimization and re-engineering of product lines, Kooler Industries was also able to contribute more in the environment.
“We have actually developed new products. We are very proud that we are the first to introduce UV LED as a safer alternative to UV Lamp. UV or ultraviolet light is vital to water purification system. Micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, cysts and mold are simple lifeforms that reproduce by subdivision, budding or by producing spores. Reproduction of these organisms is important to their life-cycle: loss of their ability to grow and multiply is classified as cellular death, and renders them harmless and no longer pathogenic. When micro-organisms are exposed to Ultraviolet light (UV), the light penetrates through their cell walls and disrupts the structure of their DNA molecules, prohibiting reproduction which results to clean and potable water. The UV LED has no mercury content that can be potentially hazardous to human consumption.”
• Cua explains that UV disinfection typically uses a conventional mercury vapor lamp that generates a considerable amount of toxic materials including mercury which is an environmentally hazardous substance with disposable cost.
• With the help of ISO 14001:2015, Kooler Industries was able to identify the opportunity to replace it with UV LED. This resulted to a 40% decrease of energy consumption per unit.
• The key impact of all initiatives helped customers get the same volume of cold water with lower use of electricity and lower noise level.
• Part of its corporate social responsibility program, Kooler Industries was tapped by Maynilad Water Services and other civil services groups to address problems of water inaccessibility and irresponsible water use.
This includes the recently launched program GinhaWASH with Light Rail Transit Line and Maynilad which provides passengers access to potable water at train stations using Kooler’s drinking fountains.
Through SGS Philippines, Kooler Industries was able to optimize and re-engineer their products which included the redesigning of the refrigeration system in their water dispensers that resulted to at least 40 % reduction on energy consumption.
According to Patrick Cua, SGS is very helpful when it comes to helping Kooler Industries understand the significant requirements and implement efficient processes. “When it comes to challenges, approaches and methodologies we are now more aware of our environment and the impacts of our business practices. He adds.
SGS also enabled Koolers Industries to achieve the commitment of the organization members.
As a result we were able to source an alternative to UV lamp. Our company became not only environmental compliant but we are able to use existing products as an unrivalled innovative tool”.
