Market Fest Kicks Off !West Kootenay EcoSociety announced a star-studded

lineup this week for the kickoff of the Market Fest season on Friday, June 29. Th e street festival will feature Vancou-ver’s Blackberry Wood and a lineup of local favorites that appeal to every audience. Samba drumming, folk dan-cing, and a kids tent round out a jam packed schedule that also features over 90 vendors selling everything from hot food to local produce.

Th e family-friendly street party will start off with the Moving Mosaic Samba Band, and will feature perform-ances by Rusty Water and the Broken Troubadours, Rip-pin Rattles, and Roxy on the Stanley Stage presented by the Nelson District Credit Union. Folk Fusion Dance, Blackberry Wood, and Gisto will grace the Kootenay Stage, presented by the Royal.

“We’re excited about this year’s Market Fest lineup, and we are convinced that the weather will smile on us,” said Jesse Woodward, Markets Director for EcoSociety. “Mar-ket Fest is more than just a fundraiser for EcoSociety’s community programs – it’s also a celebration of regional culture. Th e $5 suggested donation makes Market Fest the best entertainment value in the region.”

Life has many unexpected twists and turns. Mine took an unexpected turn four years ago, in July of 2008, when I was driving home from visit-ing my daughter in Kelowna. It was a lovely summer day and I was look-ing forward to some hiking before the next school year. Slowing down for a young coyote on the road I was sud-denly struck from behind by another vehicle. That is the moment my life changed irrevocably. For the remain-der of the summer, a variety of health care professionals examined and prescribed treatments for my many injuries. Expecting to return to J.V. Humphries in September, I was dev-astated when the doctor ordered me off work for the unforeseeable future. Surgeries, injection procedures, re-hab, and medications replaced four years of teaching and the very active life that I had prior to the accident. Over the past four years I did every-thing medically possible to heal and return to teaching at the school. Un-fortunately my condition is not im-proving sufficiently and I am forced to retire.

With my sudden departure from J.V. Humphries School, I regret never having an opportunity to say farewell to the amazing students that I taught each year. They say the teacher learns from the child and so it was for me each day. Each young person in my class came with gifts and understand-ings that became the foundation for learning that year. This was demon-

strated through the various creative proj-ects such as mazes and science activities. Destination Imagina-tion was a huge outlet for some students to express their creative

talents in art, drama and music. The many field trips allowed students to express themselves differently when out of the classroom. For some stu-dents, a Kokanee spawning channel or chopping wood at Fort Steele was where they could express confidence and knowledge. From two students I received such a thorough educa-tion on bats that I have continued to maintain the bat houses we con-structed and share with others my new knowledge.

I always believed in the potential greatness of each of you J.V.H. stu-dents whether it be socially, academi-cally, creatively or other. Each of you has your gifts which have yet to be re-alized. Over the coming years, I hope to meet many of you and share in the wonders of your lives.

To the parents of J. V. Humphries students and community members, I wish to say thank you for supporting my many classroom and extracurricu-lar activities. Whether it was ginger-bread houses, mazes, science fairs, fundraising or countless other activi-ties, I could always count on you to help make the event a success. I en-joyed taking the students outside of the classroom on many field trips... the most anticipated being Fort Steele. Some parents, such as Clau-dette Flanagan, Darleen Matthews, and Jackie Murdock, continued to come to Fort Steele long after their children had left my class. Thank you also to many, many other parents who

regularly helped out in the classroom and/or various sports events. I always sincerely appreciated your support. Without it, many of these trips would never have happened. Also, without your presence, many children would not have received the extra attention necessary to maximize their level of learning and experience.

To the community of Kaslo and out-lying areas, I thank you for supporting my programs by providing food and supplies at discounted prices, volun-teering to speak to the class in sup-port of a learning outcome, providing for field trip opportunities, and/or just being available as a resource for infor-mation and support. J.V. Humphries School is very fortunate to have such an amazing community from which to draw. Many of my programs would never have reached their level of suc-cess without your support.

One can never know the future and I certainly would not have predicted the conclusion of my teaching career to be in this way. Once I realized I would not be coming back to teach as before, I began planning how I could continue giving to the school and community. As a retired teacher I hope to continue volunteering in the school and maintain the Kokanee project in at least two schools. I see my career as a teacher not over, but shifting in a new direction where, as a volunteer, I can be available to help students at all grade levels and abilities. In the meantime, I will con-tinue to receive the necessary medi-cal attention to heal. These past years teaching at J.V. Humphries School have been truly wonderful and will provide many lasting memories that I will carry forth throughout my life.

a Sponsor-A-Book fundraising campaign. Library members and local businesses are encouraged to choose a book, maga-zine subscription, audiobook or DVD to sponsor for the li-brary collection.
