More people will get a helping hand now that Cranbrook’s Kin

Club has received a $25,000 Community Gaming Grant from the B.C. government.

“The gaming money

means a great deal to our Kin Club and the community. The most visible benefi t from the gaming funds is the an-nual free public skat-ing that we have been running for more than twenty years. But, be-hind the scenes we pro-vide four scholarships and bursaries, and many miscellaneous donations throughout our community,” said Mike Paugh, President.

Community Gam-ing Grants help local groups provide impor-tant services for B.C. families.

“The Kin Club here in Cranbrook has pro-vided our community with immeasurable op-portunities. They are dedicated to serving our community’s great-est needs as well as providing our area with community building

events, such as the free public skating, which we have enjoyed over the past twenty years,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

Across British Co-lumbia, 294 recipients will share $6,272,130

in the latest round of grants.

Recipients in this round of grants include programs for Human and Social Services.

Community Gaming Grants allow non-profi t organizations to apply for provincial gaming revenues.

Last fi scal year, in 2011/12, our govern-ment distributed $135 million in gaming grants for eligible com-munity programs and services.

More than 5,300 com-munity groups benefi t-ed from funding during 2011/12.

Full application in-formation is available online at: http://www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/gam-ing/.

Ultra EPA delivers 1000 mg of EPA per capsule making it the strongest EPA fish oil on the market. EPA is especially effective at lowering inflammation throughout the body as well as lowering triglycerides.Ultra EPA is formulated to supply the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA which is often defi-cient in the Canadian diet. It works to promote heart health, protect the cardiovas-cular system and helps to reduce inflammation.Ultra EPA contains the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA from cold water fish, which is an es-sential fatty acids (EFA). The body cannot produce EFA’s, so they must be ingested from food sources such as cold water fish. The Canadian diet is often deficient in

EFA’s, so it is vital for your health to ensure adequate intake through supplementation.EFA’s have many functions within the body, EPA in particular has been shown in studies to be effec-tive for a number of different conditions including Asthma, Arthritis, Depression and Heart Disease. Depending on your diet, Ultra EPA can have varying effects. Consuming EFA’s on a daily basis can help balance the body and improve the symptoms of conditions such as: high cholesterol, cardiovascular concerns, arthritis and inflammation, constipation, dry skin, hair and nails, weight issues (both weight gain and weight loss), weak immunity and autoimmune disorders, poor memory and concentration, fatigue, PMS and hormonal imbalances, digestive difficulties and leaky gut, insulin resistance and blood sugar imbalances. EFA’s can also elevate your mood and improve recovery time after exercising.

The BC Coroners Ser-vice has confirmed the identity of a man who died in an avalanche near Kimberley on March 23, 2013.

The man was Joel Conway, aged 38, of Kimberley.

Mr. Conway was one of a group of seven snowmobilers who had travelled to the area of Hellroaring Creek southwest of Kimber-ley on a memorial run for another Kimberley resident who died in an avalanche in the same area four years earlier.

While the group was in the area, a large ava-

lanche struck, burying two of the men. One man managed to dig himself out, but Mr. Conway was buried too deeply for self-rescue or for the other members of the party to be able to rescue him. They sought help, and a ma-jor search- and-rescue effort was launched. Mr. Conway’s body was recovered from the area on March 24.

The BC Coroners Ser-vice and RCMP con-tinue to investigate this death.

The family of Mr. Conway has been noti-fied. On behalf of the

family, the BC Coro-ners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time.

The BC Coroners Ser-vice notes that the Ca-nadian Avalanche Cen-tre continues to list the avalanche risk as “con-siderable” to “high” in many parts of the prov-ince and urges all back-country users to take extreme care, including checking the Canadian Avalanche Centre web-site for current condi-tions in B.C.

Elkford Mayor awarded Diamond Jubilee Medal in recent ceremonySubmitted Mayor Dean McKer- racher was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee

Medal in recognition of the contributions he has made to the District of Elkford. The award was officially present-ed at the March 25, 2013 Regular Council Meeting by Kootenay East MLA Hon. Bill Bennett.

“It is such a personal honour for me to pres-ent this medal to Dean. Dean has distinguished himself for many years as a strong advocate for Elkford. He deserves this commendation and I know all citizens of Elkford join with me in celebrating Mayor McKerracher’s contri-bution to their beauti-ful community.” Koo-tenay East MLA Hon. Bill Bennett.

Through the Federa-tion of Canadian Mu-nicipalities, Mayor McKerracher received this distinction for his exemplary efforts and contributions to make Elkford a desir-able place to live. The nomination recognizes the important role mu-nicipalities – and their elected leaders – play in ensuring our pros-perity and high quality of life.

Mayor McKerracher has been an active supporter of the com-munity for 41 years, a member of Council since 2002 and Mayor since 2005. During that time he has been dedicated to the promo-tion of Elkford and has a lengthy list of accom-plishments. He is most proud of the award winning Elkford Com-munity Conference Centre, the improved working relationships

with the Elk Valley communities and se-nior levels of govern-ment, Elkford’s award winning branding, the Official Community Plan (OCP) which has received numerous ac-colades for its focus on climate change and sustainability, one of which was the OCP’s recognition by the United Nations Frame-work Convention on Climate Change and last, but not least, the continued accessibility and energy efficiency improvements to Dis-trict facilities such as the upcoming arena/pool project which will include a new ice plant combined with an energy retrofit for the aquatic centre.

Allan and Tracy Wisemiller of Kimberley recently went

to Disneyland and found what could be the most unique

way of having their picture taken along with their fa-

vourite newspaper. Nicely done guys!

Every day, perfectly good horses are shipped to the slaughterhouse simply because they aren’t wanted by their owners anymore. Last summer, I was fortunate enough to save one of these horses through JM Acres Rescue Ranch in Maple Ridge, BC. Rio has become a great friend and will live a good life here in Koote-nay Country.

These volunteer res-cue organizations work on shoestring budgets and depend primarily on donations and adop-tion fees to stay afl oat. As anyone with horses knows, it’s not cheap to own these critters, but they give us so much in return. Since it’s incep-tion in 1995, JM Acres has rescued and adopted out over 600 horses. So far this year, they are averaging between 5 and 10 horses a month!

This May, I will be participating in the an-nual Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Washington. It’s a 12.4 km event, and with an average of over 50,000 runners and walkers, it is one of the biggest in North Ameri-

ca. This is only my third year and at my age (I’m 62!) it is defi nitely a challenge.

My goal this year is to take another 5 minutes off my time, and in the process raise funds for JM Acres while I do it.

If you would like to support me, please give

me a call or go to the JM Acres web site at: www.jmacresrescue.com to pledge online. You can also fi nd them on Facebook.

Thanks and Happy Trails!

Victoria is a long way from the East Kootenay, both in distance and in culture. Sometimes it seems that the things we value in rural BC aren’t priorities in theLower Mainland.

That’s why we need an MLA who is strong, passionate and knows how to get things done.

Bill hikes, hunts, fishes, quads, snowmobiles, skis and golfs. Bill Bennett understands outdoor issues and shares our values here in the East Kootenay and he’s proven he’ll stand up for them.

That’s why his constituents have nicknamed him “Kootenay Bill”

Wildsight is launching the Clean Bin Project in Cranbrook, kicking off in April. The challenge for Cranbrook residents is to reduce their waste as much as possible for the month of May. Lo-cal Skye McDougall is the brand new Sustain-ability Coordinator for Wildsight in Cranbrook and her first job will be to help Cranbrook meet that challenge.

“The goal of the Clean Bin Project is to tackle the serious issue of waste reduction,” said McDougall. “We can do this by raising aware-ness and demonstrating how reducing waste can be do-able and easy.”

The Clean Bin Project, which will run through the month of May, is a one month challenge where participants strive to reduce their garbage production. When the challenge ran in Kim-berley, some Clean Binners managed to fit all their garbage for an entire month in a single bread bag!

The Clean Bin proj-ect started out in Van-

couver, when a young couple challenged them-selves to live consumer and waste-free for a year. They stopped buy-ing “stuff”, and commit-ted to reduce packaging whenever they could. Their motto: less stuff coming in (the house) means less stuff go-ing out. The couple did what they set out to do, had a lot of fun, and then made a film about it, The Clean Bin Project. Wild-sight will be showing the film on April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the COTR lecture theatre to kick of the project.

McDougall is hoping to inspire some healthy community competition and fun by encourag-ing viewers to join the Cranbrook month-long challenge taking place in May. Elementary students will already be paving the way at week-long challenges in Cranbrook elemen-tary schools in April. Participants will be able to share their ex-periences on Facebook: Cranbrook Clean Bin Project, and anyone can follow the challenge and learn strategies to

become waste-free at the same time! Intro-duction to composting workshops will be held on Earth Day weekend, which will help partici-pants start composting to remove even more waste from their trash. The Regional District will be offering subsi-dized composters to ear-ly workshop registrants.

On Earth Day, April 22, Wildsight will host a launch party for the Clean Bin project where participants can meet and mingle with other challengers. Some of the Kimberley challenge participants will join in to show off their tiny bags of garbage.

Learn more and regis-ter for the challenge at Wildsight.ca/CleanBin. The first step for partici-pants is to see the Clean Bin Project film on April 11, 7:30 p.m. in the lec-ture theatre at COTR. Admissions is by dona-tion.

Wildsight gratefully acknowledges the fi-nancial support for the Cranbrook Clean Bin Project from by Colum-bia Basin Trust. This project was undertaken with the financial sup-port of the Government of Canada through the Federal Department of the Environment.

Time to take the Clean Bin challenge

Garages are not only for protecting vehicles from inclement weather. If you need extra stor-age space, or if you like building things or repair-ing your car, a garage is always useful and can even increase the value of your home.

If you’re planning to build a garage, the first step is to determine whether it will be free-standing or attached to your house. Then you need to think about whether it will need an entrance directly into the house and if you will need windows, heating, plumbing, and electrical outlets. Once these deci-sions have been made, a plan will have to be drawn up.

Find out from your municipality about the maximum allow-

able dimensions and the norms you will have to respect. This is also the time for you to decide if you have enough space for a sin-gle or a double garage. Don’t forget that the style of the garage has to harmonize with the dimensions and look of the house. Once your plans have been approved, the municipa lity will issue

a building permit. Using a subcontrac-

tor to take care of the foundations could prevent the slab from moving or cracking due to settling or soil movement. After that, a professional can build the walls and roof, insulate walls, and then in stall exte-rior siding, inside finishing, doors, and win-dows.

A detached garage is usually less expen-sive to build than a garage attached to the house, but this choice will depend on your needs. What is certain is that adding a garage to your home is a win-ning formula that will improve your quality of life all year round.

A new garage is a practical way to add value to your home.

In MemoriamIN Memory William Andres. January 18 1941-April 4 2011. Little did we know that morn-ing God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly Missed, forever in our hearts. Your Loving Family
