Land And Location

• Fiji is an archipelagos nation consisting of more than 300 islands scattered over 1.3 million km² of the South Pacific ocean. The islands varying in size from the 10,000km²to islets, a few meters in circumference. The total land mass area is 18,333 square kilometers. Fiji Island lie between longitude 170° east and 177° west and latitude 15° and 22° south. Situated just west of International Datelines, and is literally where new day begins and although the 180th meridian passes the island group, the international dateline is adjusted so that the entire archipelago falls into the same zone, which is 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

2 HistoryFiji Islands was settled by native indigenous Fijians three and half centuries ago and most authorities agree that people came into the

Pacific form the south-west via the Indonesian Islands.

Here the Melanesians and the Polynesians mixed to create a highly developed society

long before the arrival of the Europeans. The first European discoveries of the Fiji Group were accidental, occurring when the early

navigators were on their way elsewhere. The first of these discoveries was made in 1643

by the Dutch explorer, Abel Tasman and English navigators including Captain William Bligh, who sailed through the group after the mutiny on the “Bounty” in 1789. The Indians

were brought in the country by Colonial government after Fiji was ceded to Great

Britain in 1874.

3.Climate and Natural Disasters

Fiji has a mild tropical climate with plentiful rain under prevailing conditions. However, it is subject to a potentially catastrophic climate events such cyclones, earthquakes, flooding and multiple land slips which can have a major impact on the economy and infrastructure. The predicted sea level rise, as a result of global warming could have profound consequences for all Fiji’s urban centers, agriculture and coastal development.
