Produced by the National Film Board 1951 to encourage a better understanding of the meaning of the war in Korea.
Korean War In June 1950, the army of
communist state North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea.
President Truman (USA) sees this as an example of communist aggression.
The United Nations (with support from the USA) vote to send an international force to support South Korea.
Korean War Australia was the first nation
to support the UN and dispatched military equipment
In July 1950, Australia committed troops to the conflict who would serve under General Douglas MacArthur
Australians took part in the heavy fighting along the 38th parallel.
Korean War A ceasefire brought the war to an end in 1953
with a loss of around 118 000 UN troops. 300 Australians were killed in the war. The Korean War justified the Australian
governments beliefs of aggressive communism in Asia.
Australia had opposed communism and had gone to Korea to prove its loyalty to the USA.
It was also an example of ‘forward defence’ and proof of military intervention to oppose the spread of communism.
