Workshop: Combine parts of Style-Tracks (Edit)

This Workshop (“Tutorial” or “How-To”) has been created using a Korg Pa800 with OPERATING System Version 2.01 installed. Information also applies to a Korg Pa2Xpro and should also be adaptable/appropriate for Pa1X (pro) – Users. In this example, we want to copy the drum-track of a style (A) to the drum-track of the Style (B) and save the resulting style as MIX-Style in the USER-Section. So: we will copy the DRUM-TRACK from the Style DISCO-SAMBA in the Style Bank LATIN to the DRUM-TRACK of the Style GUITAR-POP in the Bank POP and save this resulting MIX – Style as new USER-STYLE ! But first: Select the STYLE PLAY Mode!

Now we BEGIN !

In this Workshop we ‘select’ the GUITAR POP style as BASIC – Style

Press RECORD Button down beneath the display and then choose RECORD / EDIT CURRENT STYLE

Then the keyboard prompts with :

Now you have to give the MENU Button near to the DATA-Entry-Dial, because we want to quickly insert a PAD! and don’t want to personally record any track!

... and here we point to the Screen MENU and the Style-EDIT Button !

and then Select STYLE EDIT In the following screen we have to select from the bottom page Tab the Entry "COPY FROM STYLE" (as we want to do exactly this) :

FROM STYLE: we want to mix-up the DRUM-Track of the DISCO-SAMBA into the GUITAR-POP – Style … (use SELECT as shown) …

** Adjust in the line From CV "ALL" and Select the target ‘TO’: ALL VARIATIONS ! For further information please consult the Manual. E.g. : You are able to copy the POWER Chord Guitar from Style-A Var-2 Acc-8 into the Style-B Var-4 Acc-2 ! ** in the selectable item ‘FROM Track’ and ‘TO TRACK’ you have to choose "Drum" or even other ACC-Tracks – if desired !

All these options can be also selected by “TO TRACK”. Both option just have to match in a good manner… or you have to readjust the “track-type” properly … The following would be also ok (result is: Original Drum-Track of Guitar-POP is not modified, but the PERC-Track is consisting the DRUM-Track of the DISCO-SAMBA. There are two drummers now playing the style … look here:

Here’s a small additional excursion for those, who want to copy the DRUM-TRACK to an ACC-Track to get a SUPER_DRUMMING-STYLE… You have to press the MENU – Button on the keyboard and then you have to chose STYLE TRACK CONTROLS :

What we have to do is the following: The keyboard has to “know” whether a track type is ACC or DRUM or PERC or GTR. ! As you probably know: DRUM tracks are not concerned by translation of the harmonic recognition (Harmony’s played). If you forget or disregard this information, the resulting STYLE will probably have a peculiar sound. For this normally the ACC1 to ACC5 tracks “react” on changing harmonies… Except the track-types DRUM or PERC. BUT WE HAVE TO PRESCRIBE this information!

But now back to our example, here is the correct setting of what should be done: When finished with all selections …Press the Command Button ‘EXECUTE’ … Corresponding Exit safety question, you have to answer with ‘’YES“! Now this happens as follows!: In the formerly chosen target style [In the Target of choice] GUITAR POP there is a copying of the DRUM-Tracks of ALL VARIATIONS by the “given source” DISCO SAMBA DRUM-Tracks (just selected). There will be a copy process concerning DRUM-Tracks INTRO1 -> INTRO1 … / VAR1->VAR1 … VAR4…VAR4 and finally END2->END2 !!! That is what you’ve just achieved by pressing EXECUTE with the given parameter selection. You can also have the modification of a specific VARIATION … then use another selection instead of ALL from the chioce-box: “FROM E/CV” and “TO E/CV” … as you would like it … or even mix INTROx and FILLx. THAT’S ALL ! Now we want to go back by pressing the EXIT-Button on the keyboard into the MAIN – Menu of STYLE EDIT and then we select in the DISPLAY the PAGE MENU – Button and select open…

Choose OK and then for the ‘SAVE’ Process on the selected item.

Now, press the ‘RECORD’ Button (while in the ACTIVE mode of Style EDIT -> this means: I want to leave!) ... Corresponding Exit safety question, you have to answer with ‘’YES“!

Now we have to select the new „MIX Style" from the Favourite or User Section…. You can now try the modified “sound” of the new MIX – style (in VAR1 ) Perhaps you want to Select an alternative DRUM KIT !?

R E A D Y ! This will work also with all the other Track–types... however, you have to give the correct track type and your required choice of Variation ... NOTICE ! The Korg-OS ‘’watches“ different pattern-length’s while the copy-actions fit to the intentions of the operator! If there is a gap on counting the length of mixed patterns at the end of the pattern-length ... the Gap is filled up automatically from the beginning until there is no acoustic/musical break ! The vast variety of styles in the FACTORY – Banks gives you a profound library, where you can obtain your “SOURCES”. If you have a favourite-style-track anywhere, you are now able to mix it up with another style – IF you are not happy with it so far. When complete the new combined style will sound better, not only to you, but also to an audience!
