At themedia launch for the event last night,defending title holderMick Fanning said thathe feels right at home in Jeffreys Bay and ishoping for another good result in the JBayOpen.“This wave is so incredible,” said Fanning.

MUSSEL research is not just what Tiaan Hoe-ben does - it is part of who he is.

Hoeben - a third year Nature Conservationstudent at the Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity in Port Elizabeth who is currentlydoing his practical year at the SupertubesFoundation in Jeffreys Bay - was born and

raised in Cape Town and spent years gazingout to the sea from his childhood classrooms,exploring the coastline and sea bottom.

He has recently started to monitor the Med-iterranean mussel population on the intertid-al reef covering the rocky shore of JeffreysBay between Boneyards and Point in an at-tempt to establish whether the mussel popula-tion is increasing or decreasing.

Hoeben will be assisted by an international

leader in coastal marine ecology, Dr AntonMcLachlan, who is residing in Jeffreys Bay.

“Once the species is in decline or removedfrom its original habitat, the whole food chainwill be disrupted and result in more speciesdisappearing,” says Hoeben.

“Once the mussel population numbers aredetermined, the community can becomehands-on involved in helping to conserve thisspecies.

“The community as a whole will benefitfrom the research as the reef will be more at-tractive, featuring various oceanic life. Theresearch will furthermore ensure a cleanerand safer environment for humans to live in,as well as help educate younger generations.”

EMERGING farmers fromHankey received ashot in the arm in their quest to become suc-cessful commercial farmers, when the MECof Rural Development and Agrarian Reform,Mlibo Qoboshiyane, donated a tractor tothem.

The tractor comes with a row picket plant-er, fertiliser sprinkler, boom sprayer, har-rowingdiscs anda cultivator, at a cost of someR700 000.Also included are 400 litres of diesel, spon-

sored by the department. Fencing materialwill follow in due course.The donation comes after the MEC visited

the area inSeptember last year.Hewas imme-diately drawn to the plight of the emergingfarmers who were plying their trade underdifficult circumstances due to a lack of re-sources.They took the MEC to their fields where

theyhadplantedpotatoes, cabbages andotheragricultural produce and asked for assis-tance. The donationwas the result of their en-durance.At the handover function of the vehicle, Qo-

boshiyane said the group of farmers, fromMilton and Weston, was a good example ofpeople-driven economic development and itwas only right for Government to assist them

in expanding.“During this month where we are celebrat-

ing 60 years of the Freedom Charter, we arefulfilling one its commitments. The Chartersays ‘The state shall help peasants (farmers)with implements, seeds, tractors and dams tosave the soil and assist tillers’. We are trans-lating these words into reality,” he said.“When we come back here, we want to be

RALLY fans can look forward to an excitingVolkswagen Rally on Friday and Saturday,July 17 and 18, in Port Elizabeth and sur-rounds. The 2015 event features 12 stages ofcompetition, with the layout of the event de-signed to keep the action as close to the fansas possible.

For motorsport fans wanting to get in-volved as early as possible, the scrutineeringfunction on Thursday evening before the ral-ly presents the perfect opportunity. The ven-ue is Tavcor Volkswagen on theWilliamMof-fett Expressway.Scrutineering has been revamped for 2015

and will allow fans to see the cars, meet thedrivers and navigators, get posters signedand also enter a competition.A wheel-changing competition is being or-

ganised for rally fans attenting the scruti-

neering event – the winners of which will betreated to a VIP VW Rally experience at theVolkswagen Rally.“TheVWRally is going to bemore challeng-

ing and also much more spectator friendly,”says Joe Fourie, route organiser of the event.“There is less driving around for the rallyfans and there is also spectating on every sin-gle stage of the event. which means spectators can look forward towatching two cars in action on the stage si-multaneously – and both of these stages takeplace at PEOTR, rounding off theVolkswagenRally with maximum action.“Greater accessibility to the event means

more opportunities to see the rally cars in ac-tion,” says Fourie.“Thiswill provide good spectating but rally

and teammate Christian van Aardt didNMMU proud with their selection to the na-tional squad for the world student games.Despite being the 2014 titleholders, the

NMMU riders were at a numerical disadvan-tage from the start of the three-day road tour.“We went into the tour as defending cham-

pions and never would have thought that wewould get the results we did with only fourriders compared to the other universitieswho had up to seven,” said Prinsloo, whoseyoung team also included Matthew Hayter,Van Aardt and Shane Kemp.The tour kicked off with a 70km road stage

on the Lady Loch circuit in Wellington.The Madibaz were looking good until the

third lap, whenVanAardt crashed heavily ashe crossed the line at the first sprint prime.“It was at this point that I once again real-

ised why I love student champs so much, asthe entire bunch then sat up and waited forChristiaan to return,” said Prinsloo.The NMMU team recovered well to go into

the afternoon’s individual time-trial in firstplace in the team classification.“The guys showed guts as the entire team

rode brilliant times despite our smallerteam,” Prinsloo said.Unfortunately, the Madibaz slipped into

second after stage two, as the 120km queenstage loomed ahead the following day.

Prinsloo said day three proved to be eventougher on the NMMU camp with the riders

feeling physically drained from the two pre-vious days of hard racing.

THE sixth annual Enid Pretorius PropertiesWomen’s Day Trail Run and Walk is set totake place in and around St Francis Bay at09:00 on August 9.

The main distance of the day is 26km, butdue to thepopularity of the route, the organis-ers introduced a new half marathon (21km)and 15kmdistance through the areas normal-ly closed to the public, as well as a 5km onthe St Francis Bay Golf Course for park run-ners and walkers.

“This is a walk to celebrate Women’s Day,but runners and males are also welcome,”says organiser Eric Stewart. “We have intro-duced shorter distances to the original eventas weather conditions on the day can changethings into a challenge. We want everyone tohave the opportunity to enjoy our beautifulsurrounds.”

The main race starts at the St Francis Golf

Course and proceeds through the St FrancisGolf Course en route to the St Francis Links.

Participants will be transported to the21km and 15km starting points just after the26km kicked off.

There will be four well-stocked waterpoints on the entire route.

The first water point will be at the St Fran-cisLinksService gate,where the 21kmpartic-ipants will be taken to for the start of this dis-tance.

The second waterpoint, on the Mosterts-hoek Road, will be the start of the 15km dis-tance. No private vehicles will be allowed toenter the property, and participants will bedropped off together. The route will be alongthe Wild Side’s rocky shoreline.

The third waterpoint will be at the SealPoint Lighthouse, from where runners andwalkers will cross the Cape St Francis mainbeachandSharkPoint to reach the fourthwa-terpoint at Port St Francis. Theywill thenusethe Two Harbours Walk route to get to the fi-

nish line at the Village Centre.Certificateswill be awarded to the top three

male and female winners in each distance.True to the original event, a prize will be giv-en to the oldest and youngest participant ofthe main event, running or walking, itdoesn’t matter.

THEKougaExpresswill for the first time puttheir pedal power to the test as hundredsof adrenaline junkies descend on JeffreysBay for the Jeffreys Bay Mountain BikeOpen.

Representing the Kouga Express, TanjeBarrett and Elmarie Gouws will tackle pur-pose-built wooden bridges and berms, fastfarm roads, as tight and twisty singletrackalong an old riverbed and a tunnel of naturalvegetation.

Now in its third year, the Mountain BikeOpen wheels off at the Kabeljauws Lagoon at08:00 this Saturday and features three routes:40km, 60km and 85km.

The 40km route is designed for the adven-turous fun rider looking to ride a significantdistance andwill be fairly flat andnon-techni-cal. The two longer routes require good tech-nical proficiency and some training in thelegs, with the 60km aimed at trail riders andthe 85km at fit racers with marathon experi-ence.

The longer routes will also feature spectac-ular trails in Impala Ranch, a bike park out-side Jeffreys Bay. The 1 000 hectares of pris-tine countryside has been a private gamefarm for the past 20 years with access onlyto family and friends of the landowner.

This competition will be ‘fished’ on a catchand release basis in order to promote respon-sible angling, and there will be 15 weigh mar-shals on duty to record catches.

July can be a very productivemonth for an-gling in Jeffreys Bay, with some quality edi-ble fish around. Depending on the conditionson the day, catches should include MusselCracker, Steenbras, Kob, Elf and Leerfish.Winter months are not the best time to targetsharks and rays, but under the right condi-tions anglers could look at targeting Smooth-ounds, Spotties, Cowsharks and SpearnoseSkates.

Entertainment on the day includes a baitand tackle clinic from 15:00 to 16:00 by Proteaanglers and television personalities, kites,

music, food stalls, a beer tent and a play areafor the children.

Registration takes place from 06:30 to 08:00at the Kabeljous parking lot on the day of thecompetition.

The fishing area will be from DolphinBeach to the far side of the Kabeljous lagoon.The competition hours is from 08:30 to 14:30,with the prize-giving are at 16:30.

Officials will be available on the day at theKabeljous grass parking area to assist all en-trants before the competition starts.
