THE BEACHESAo Nang, at 20km from Krabi Town, is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches, a long stretch of white sandy beach with limestone mountains as a backdrop. It has a wide range of accommodation and services and the main shopping street features restaurants, bars, pubs, souvenir shops, dive centers and tour agencies, massage centers and spas. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical longtail boat.Noppharat Thara beach, just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset and at weekends. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach, near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach.Railay beaches are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains. Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, rocky islands

emerging from the sea. Railay can only be reached by boat, a 15 minutes ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock climbing course, hike the limestone massif to a lagoon and a viewpoint, or simply chill out. Neighbouring Tonsai lies at the base of a cliff that divides it form Railay West. Tonsai has a shallow beach with slow gradients out to sea which is profoundly affected by the tide.Klong Muang beach is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get the so deserved repose, surrounded by pristine nature.Tubkaek beach is another real place to hide away; long, clean and peaceful, the area has breathtaking views over Koh Hong islands archipelago, and charming sunsets. From there you can venture inside the National Park and try a walking trail to a viewpoint and a waterfall.Koh Lanta beaches have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern beach at Lanta Yai.

NATURAL HOTSPOTSLimestone mountains or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the massifs of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40 million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans proliferated, today home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang. One must find a broken edge to see the shells clearly, since all of those on the upper surface have been walked on and worn down by the elements and are hard to identify.Khao Phanom Bencha National Park, at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools.Tarnbok Khoranee National Park, in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and for the hundreds of birds’ species.Phi Hua Toh Cave, in the nearby Bor Thor area, surrounded by mangrove swamps and reachable by boat or kayak, is where to see pre-historic rock paintings depicting animals and humans.Sa Morakot, the Emerald Pool, is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle.

THE ISLANDSHop on or hire a longtail, the local wooden boats with their picturesque prows. Sail away to Koh Poda, surrounded by turquoise waters, or to Koh Kai, shaped as a chicken and therefore called the Chicken Island, from where a walk on a sandy pathway connects it to Koh Tub. Make a longtail boat or speedboat trip to the Koh Hong archipelago, a group of limestone islands with hidden caves and lagoons perfect for kayaking or snorkeling. Join an organized tour to amazingKoh Phi Phi islands, full of marvelous bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life, caves where swallow nests are harvested, and much more.Visit Koh Jum and Koh Siboya, small, unspoiled tropical hide-away that have a unique atmosphere. These islands give visitors the time to relax and re-charge their batteries. Or venture out on Koh Lanta, the developing island at the southern end of the province home to sea gypsies communities, where you will meet nature and tradition. A National Park area that comprises many different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai and remote Koh Rok.

THE CULTUREBan Natin, on the way from Ao Nang to Klong Muang, is the

place to experience the peaceful lifestyle of the local Muslim community. Home accommodation is available, or you can simply make a stopover and see the production of handmade products such as batik paintings, pineapple-fiber paper and coconut shell carving.Wat Klong Thom Museum features various kinds of beads, stone tools, and stone and earthen ornaments in animal shapes of approximately 5,000 years old, uncovered during archeological excavations.Fire dancing, part of the beach culture, is a popular evening activity on the beaches of Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi, performed by acrobatic boys who swing burning torches around their bodies, creating sparkling artistic pictures.Ban Sang-Ka-U is a sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.

THE TOWNSmall, charming, silent at times, nice for a day’s walking tour. Krabi Town is full of old buildings, bars and restaurants, local exotic marketplaces and food stalls at the old Chao Fa pier where to sample the local food. The Krabi motto is: “lovely town, lovely people”; Krabi’s simple people are definitely proud of their town and of their warm and generous character. Hop on a longtail boat at Chao Fa pier and visit Khao Kanab Nam, the unique pair of hills facing each other on the opposite banks of the Krabi River, symbols of the town; or embark on a journey to Koh Klang, an island next to town on the mouth of the river, where you will experience lives lived by the local fishing communities; or charter a boatman for a visit to the mangrove backwaters.

THE TEMPLELocated just 9 km from Krabi Town the Wat Tham Seua, or Tiger Cave Monastery, is one of south Thailand’s most famous and interesting forest temples, as the monks live, meditate and worship within a maze of natural caves in an overgrown jungle valley. Many Thai women live out their old-age there as nuns. Explore the inner cave used by monks for meditation. Climb the 1,237 steps up a limestone tower to see the statue of the Buddha and the “footprint of the Buddha” embedded in the rock, and to enjoy one of the best viewpoints of the area. Take the circular

walk through Krabi’s rarest of all features, a pocket of primary lowland forest, a circular rocky basin enclosed by high cliffs. Here, along a pathway used by monks to meditate and amongst a number of magnificent trees you can be amazed in front of the largest flared root base of any tree remaining in Thailand.

KAYAKINGThis is a hugely popular activity in Krabi. The mangroves, caves and of course the beaches, provide plenty of great opportunities for kayaking. The Ao Nang/Railay area is popular as it’s close and convenient but if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, book yourself on a tour to Ao Thalane or Bor Thor in Tarn Boke Koranee National Park. The caves, grottoes and lagoons make for a great day of fun and adventure.

WAT THAM SUEAA hike to Wat Tham Seua or Tiger Cave Temple is exhausting, exhilarating and ultimately hugely rewarding. Once you’ve climbed the 1,257 steps that lead to the hilltop temple you’ll be met by stunning views over the surrounding countryside. The glorious Thai countryside having transformed into swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rain. Combine the temple with trips to other destinations like Sa Morakot or visit as a separate Krabi Town day trip and combine with trips to the market.

SUNSET STROLL ALONG AO NANG ESPLANADE/NOPPHARAT THARA BEACHSunsets over Ao Nang and Nopharrat Thara are probably some of the best you are ever likely to see. The monsoon rain brings storm clouds that hang ominously over the bay creating dynamic sunsets that bathe the bay in sumptuous light. Walk along the esplanade to get some great views of the longtail boats bobbing on the water or just sit on a bench and watch as the sky transforms.

Evening in the Last Fisherman Bar/Sea Food Restaurants at Noppharat Thara and Ao nangAfter a sunset stroll there’s no better way to finish off your evening than chatting over a cocktail or two or indulging in some great seafood. If you finish your walk in Ao Nang continue along the road by the police box until you come to the Last Fisherman Bar, one of Ao Nang’s best night-spots. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink by the ocean. The seafood restaurants at the other side of Ao Nang Beach or by the very end of Noppharat Thara beach are a must for a local fish fare.

ROCK CLIMBING AND RAILAY BEACHCombine a trip to Railay Beach with some rock climbing and serious beach time and then sample some of the local nightlife. Krabi is among the World’s best destinations for climbing. The Railay peninsular is home to the local climbing scene and is considered a mecca for the sport. There are hundreds of bolted routes in the Railay area as well as rock-climbing schools that can provide guides

and equipment. Railay, once the sole preserve of backpackers has become a favourite holiday destination, combining 2 world class beaches, excellent dining and some funky after hours haunts to down a few bottles of local brew.

Krabi and Ao Nang are blessed with some great markets and (Krabi town boasts the biggest covered market in southern Thailand) There’s a market operating on any given day of the week selling everything from fruit and vegetables, household items, clothes and shoes, snacks, BBQ meat, Muslim curries and more. Try the Thursday market or Saturday markets in Klong Haeng.

SA MORAKOTA trip to Sa Morakot or the ‘Crystal Pool’ can be combined with trips to other beauty spots such as the hot springs. The so called ‘Emerald Pool’ is fed by a natural spring and gets its name from the glorious colour of its water. Perfect for swimming, it makes a great day out and a nice break from the beach. The rainy season is a great time to go; more water and less people. The best way to visit is on a tour, making it easy to combine it with a trip to nature’s own hot tub –

the namtok ron (hot springs) a series of splash pools fed by a natural thermal spring.

KOH HONG ARCHIPELAGONo trip to Krabi or Ao Nang is complete without a trip to Koh Hong, the stunning group of islands lying off the Krabi coast. The beaches of Kong Hong never cease to amaze visitors with their crystal clear water and stunning white sand. The beaches in Ao Nang can become rough and windy in the wet season but the beaches on the islands lying in the Andaman Sea remain calm and good for swimming. Koh Hong has two glorious beaches a lagoon and national park land – a real island paradise.

LOCAL NIGHTLIFEIf drinking prodigious amounts of local brew is on your agenda then seek out one of Krabi Town or Ao Nang’s more lively night spots. In Ao Nang, Luna Bar is a popular joint for movers who want to bust some shapes on the dancefloor. Vodka or whiskey buckets are usually

the order of the day. If you want to party Thai style then head to Centerpoint in Ao Nang or Kansas Saloon in Krabi Town. Air-con ad non, with lots of whiskey on ice flowing, these places are an experience. Live music, dj sets and semi-clad dancing girls are what you can expect. For a less salubrious night out, try Soi Salai opposite McDonald’s in Ao Nang. This clusters of neon-lit ‘beer-bars’ are often friendly and good fun and many have cable TV and free pool on offer. The next place for entertainment are the bamboo huts opposite Siam Commercial Bank for a relaxed chillout evening.

LONGTAIL BOAT TRIP TO KRABI MANGROVESThe mangroves that fringe the coastline of the various islands divided by the maze of canals are thick and impenetrable. Last month we indulged in a 6-course menu specially prepared by Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort Italian chef, Francesco Lollino paired to perfection by wine specialists with a selection of new world taste Wolf Blass young 2010 wine that were stunning, and ready to be consumed. The informal event happened near the beachfront, at Sheraton Gecko’s Restaurant.

POPULAR FOOD JOURNALIST AND REVIEWER MICHAEL MOORE WAS PRESENT, enlightening all the 50 or so people present on Wolf Blass winery. While the first wine was served to open up our bellies, the skilled Filipino band on stage started playing Latin tunes. Fresh and bubbly Eagle Hawk Cuvee Brut, a refreshing full-bodied with apple and melon flavours and a rich and creamy mouth feel, put a spark in our palate, and opened our belly for the food.Prosciutto e melone followed, greatly presented and served with a super Chardonnay President Selection: a rich full-bodied wine with a creamy mouth feel, a vibrant lemon yellow color, and an intense aromas of peach and melon supported by subtle oak.

Waiters then served a very special light to medium bodied Sauvignon Blanc Red Label; we patiently waited for the next course, which was a bit delayed, so I could not help starting to drink. It tasted excellent. Pale straw in colour, with hints of citrus and dry grass notes boosted with more powerful tropical fruit, crisp fruit flavours and a crisp citrus finish. The carpaccio of salmon and sea bass had such a presentation that left me speechless. I squeezed some lemon onto

it and ate it with tartar and mustard sauce. Good job Francesco.

Mr. Moore took the opportunity of a break in the servings to tell us about the winery: Wolf Blass arrived in Australia’s Barossa Valley at the age of 27, and has since developed one of Australia’s premier wineries, producing

some of Australia’s very best wines for over 30 years, and receiving over 3,000 awards at international wine shows since 1966. Produced from fruit grown in vineyards across southeast Australia, Wolf Blass winemakers makes wines of outstanding

quality, character and consistency every year.

Finding myself bubbly enough and deep into a conversation with K.Bee, Marketing Communications Manager at Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort, hunger subsided and wine number four arrived: a Traminer Riesling Red Label served with a deep fried goat cheese on raspberry caulis. With full aroma, plenty of fruit and spicy on the nose, this luscious sweet white is perfect for everyday drinking.Before I could comment on the white wines, the first red wine reached the table: a full-bodied Yellow Label Merlot, strong, with lots of Australian sun in its grapes. I turned the glass, looked at the drops, sipped a bit of it. This was a soft and flavourful Merlot with gentle tannins and mouth filling, plenty of

juicy plum and chocolate, peppermint and cherry, a whisp of sweet aromatic spice, lightly oaked and velvety. Yellow Label builds on the success that Wolf Blass has enjoyed after many years of perfecting a pure Merlot, to produce an everyday red wine of quality, consistency and charm. The next I knew was the fantastic smell of porcini mushroom invading my nostrils, that reached my table in the form of ravioli filling.

Gecko’s is Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort signature restaurant and features fresh pastas, salads and delicious selections from authentic Italian home cooking to pizzas baked in a traditional wood-burning oven. Enjoy breathtaking ocean views and the Andaman Sea breeze while dining with them.

What followed was a tender lamb chop with polenta and a sauce made with the same wine it was served with: an amazing Shiraz Grey Label, with a nose of rich, ripe berries, hints of pepper, spice and dark chocolate. Medium-full bodied, svelte, compact and finely tuned, with polished tannin, it was the best shot of the evening. I felt great, if a bit inebriated. A cassata dessert closed the dinner in style, in Italian style to be precise.

Wolf Blass wine-makers have become part of the Australian wine zeitgeist and many consumers know their reliable and approachable wines;

this wine dinner at the Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort was a really fascinating insight into the remarkable quality they can produce, and the food cooked by Sheraton Krabi Beach Resort Italian chef Francesco Lollino was without doubt a perfect match for a quality dinner.

Christmasin Thailand

THERE IS ONE THING ABOUT THAI PEOPLE AND THAT IS THEY LOVE TO CELEBRATE. It doesn’t matter if the festival originated in a different country (like Halloween) or that it comes from a completely different religion (like Christian). Give them a good excuse to have fun and they will celebrate just about anything! In Thailand, Christmas isn’t a public holiday. However, many of the youngsters enjoy celebrating the “fun” side of the festive season. To them, Christmas means, Santa Claus, little angels, Christmas carols and folk dancing. At this time of year, people are giving each other cards and presents, but this is mainly connected to the New Year holiday that is just around the corner. Only Christian families will give each other presents on Christmas Day. Unlike other countries, Thailand is very tolerant of other religions. Also, it is worth remembering that the Christmas celebration has ancient roots in the winter solstice, and revelries involving holly, mistletoe, candles, feasts and gift Although the temperature outside will be peeking at 34˚C and the only snow you’ll find will be on the screen of a badly tuned

in television set, you certainly won’t miss out on the festivities if you spend Christmas in Thailand. Most homes and businesses in Thailand have a miniature house outside of their property to offer shelter to the benevolent spirits who protect them - and come December time, they will also be decorated in tinsel, fairy lights and sometimes even tiny Santa hats! Some Thai families will give their children gifts on Christmas morning and share

a celebratory evening meal – although, this is more likely to be a Thai curry rather than the traditional Christmas fare of roast turkey. Just as in the rest of the world, Christmas means business. Although rather late by Western standards, some Thai stores and shopping malls will begin putting up their decorations as the end of December approaches. The beach roads will be beautifully illuminated with fairy lights, and bars and restaurant staffs will be wearing a Santa hut. Most hotels will offer a special Xmas dinner, lunch or package offer.

With the Thais love of festivities and good cheer, of giving presents and striving for peace and harmony it is easy to see the appeal of a Thai Christmas. Enjoy it.

The Caves of KrabiLimestone is part of the core foundation on which most of the islands and coastal inlands of Southern Thailand are based,

and this base provides the unique “look and feel” of the area. In addition to towering natural sculptures that are beloved by rock climbers, these same limestone formations also provide another

type of outdoor adventure: cave exploration!

FOR THOSE THAT LOVE THE SUBLIME AND SUBTERRANEAN ATMOSPHERE OF CAVES, Krabi offers many opportunities to explore the underside of mother earth in dozens of locations, approached from both the shore on kayak or canoe, or by short inland treks. Within many of the limestone caves found near Krabi, you can also find collapsed caverns called “hongs.” These hongs offer an excellent advantage point to see the miracles of nature and age, as these timeless spaces were carved by wind and sea over the ages, and many of these tunnels and caverns contain both natural beauty as well as the mark of man. For example, prehistoric humans painted many of these limestone portals, and here they have left their mark in pictograms, shards of pottery and ancient stone tools.

Excavation of many of these mysterious limestone sites is ongoing, and a museum has been established just southeast of

Krabi Town that contains exhibits full of ceramics and bronze tools from an era now gone by. Even today, these caves hold a place in contemporary Thai culture, as many locals believe that certain caves hold the spirits of gods and goddesses, and even in this modern age, they are worshipped with all the respect they were given hundreds or thousands of years ago.To get started in your own explorations, here is some information about the most popular of caves in the area, and some tips on making your cave adventures memorable ones:

KHAO KHANAB NAM These two limestone hills mark the province in which Krabi Town is located, and can be seen from most vantage points in town. These two 100-meter towers also mark the Maenam Krabi River that flows between them. The right-side tower entombs a cave worth visiting, and there are two entrances:

one with an extremely steep walkway and the other suitable for children and the elderly to use. Here you will find well-made steps, and within 10 minutes or so these steps will lead you to the cave entrance. The best way to get to the site is to take a longboat from the town pier, and within 15 minutes you will be there.THAM SADET This cave can be found by traveling just 7 kms from Krabi Town along Highway 4034, and is located in Ban Nong Kok, Tambon Sai Thai. The significance of this cave is in the fact it has earned the royal title of “Sadet,” indicating the site has been bestowed by royalty. In 1901, the then prince (King Rama VI) visited the cave to give it this title. The cave interior is very beautiful, and filled with many interesting stalactites and stalagmites.

WAT THAM SUA (THE TIGER CAVE) This is probably the most famous of caves in the area and can be found just 9 kms from Krabi Town. The cave

is actually attached to a “working” temple where monks use the cave during their daily ritual ceremonies. The cave gets its name from what looks like fossilized tiger prints found along parts of the stone floor. In addition to the cave filled with golden Buddha’s and other statues, there is a steep climb to be made to see the “footprint of the Buddha” - after ascending 1,272 steps to the top of the limestone tower. Once at the summit, you will be rewarded with an unobstructed view of the Andaman Sea and the surrounding countryside.

THAM PHI HUA TO This large cave is known as the “Big-headed Ghost Cave,” and was used as a ceremonial burial site some 3,000 years ago. You can still see some of the prehistoric paintings on the cave ceiling, and from the outside, the cave is indeed a bit scary, as it’s mouth does resemble a large face. Inside the cave, there are more likenesses in the form of rocks shaped like a dragon and crocodile head. Tham Phi Hua To is located in the Ao Luk District, and can be reached by long tail boat or canoe from the Bor Thor Jetty.

SOME SPECTACULAR CAVES OF NORTHERN KRABI PROVINCEthAm phi huA to or thAm huA KAloK: This is a big cave with many grottos in a mountain surrounded by water av nd mangrove forests. Formerly a ghost with an impressively large skull resided in the cave, from which comes its name; pi hua toh means big-headed ghost. Also of interest are the many prehistoric colored pictures of men, animals, and various limbs and organs that decorate the walls. Shells in great numbers, on top of the other, are another feature of this cave. To visit Pi Hua Toh, board a longtail or a kayak at Bor Tor Pier.

thAm phrA: This is the site of the Kao Phra Suhn Yah Tah Rham Meditation Center. It is about 2 kilometers from the district offices of Ao Luk. Inside the cave is a Buddhist effigy of great antiquity. This has two other statues of equal size flanking it placed at a later date, and the base is surrounded with smaller wooden figures.thAm phet: Located 3 kilometers from the intersection at Ao Luk Nua market. The cave’s front has Buddhist statues and the cave walls are of a stone that reflects light with the same dazzling beauty as diamond, hence the name; Pet is Thai for diamond. To visit the cave, procure a guide from the Tarnbohk Korani National Park and be sure to bring a flashlight or torch.thAm lod nuA - thAm lod tAi: This lies 2 kilometers distant from the district offices on the Ao Luk-Laem Sak road near the watercourse of Klong Ta Prahng. There are two caves:

* Tham Lod Nua: This beautiful cave winds back on itself like an elbow.

* Tham Lod Tai: This is a limestone tunnel longer and narrower than one of the same name in Phang-nga Bay. The cave mouth has stalactites and stalagmites and a boulder shaped like the quarter moon lying on its side. Visit this cave when the water is low by boarding a longtail boat at Bor Tor Pier; the journey takes only 10 minutes.thAm chAo ley: This is west of Laem sak Cape in a beautiful bay surrounding with limestone mountains. Inside are stalactites and stalagmites, as well as well as prehistoric paintings of people, animals, and geometric designs. These paintings are thought to be somewhat more recent than those found in Pi Hua Toh Cave. To Visit the cave, take a regularly scheduled boat from the Sapan Pla of Fishing Pier at Laem Sak Cape: travel time is about 15 minutes.KhAo gAroS: Some caves in this compound contain prehistoric paintings of men and animals, and can be visited by boat from Laem Sak in Amphoe Ao Luk.thAm Song pi nong or thAm poon neuA tAi: lies west of Pi Hua Cave Toh. Inside were found human skeletal remains, pottery, earrings, and bronze bracelets.thAm huA gAlohK nAi or thAm buhn mAhK: This is only one hundred meters from Pi

Hua Toh cave. It was discovered by a local villager named Bang Mahk. It is a large, dark cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites. A large number of prehistoric pottery shards were found in layers on the cave wall outcropping near the entrance. These have distinctive line designs, are thicker and coarser than those found elsewhere.thAm toh luAng: Located in Ban Hohp, Tambon Klong Hin. This cave has three levels, each of which abounds in stalactites and stalagmites. Some resemble Buddhist monks, others look like legendary multi headed serpents. Here stayed Jao Por Toh Luang, after whom the cave took its name.thAm SeuA noi: This cave is 2 kilometers distant from Hua Galohk cave in Ban Bor Tor and is the site of a monastery and meditation centre; the front is formed by a broad outcropping in the hill. The area outside is peaceful and quiet; inside, the cave is beautiful. Many old pottery remains have been found here.thAm SeuA noK or thAm tehp nimit: This cave houses the Nimit Monastery; a tunnel below the cave lets sea water enter so the walls are thick large, dark cave, and off to the side of that another fifty meters is Orahan Cave, which has more strangely shaped stalactites and stalagmites than anywhere else. They shine like lights and are stunning.

CAVE NEWSLocated in Huay Namkaew village in Khao Panom, Tham Wimarnmek is a newly discovered cave that the local government is preparing to open as an eco-tourism site to generate revenue for residents. The cave houses rooms of 1km wide and 60mt high that can easily accommodate 800 people. Significant is the presence of amazing stalactites and stalagmites, as well as rock formation shaped like hearts, lions and elephants. Other caves comprised in the same mountain are Tham Petch and Tham Hanumarn. The new discovery follows the local government and villagers’ survey for an eco-tourism site in this mountain side village.

IT IS HARD TO FIND THE RIGHT WORDS TO DESCRIBE MY FEELINGS. IT WAS EARLY MORNING LAST MONTHS and we were enjoying our sailing yacht in the early hours of the morning, long before all longtail boats start circulating. Suddenly, we were approached by a group of dolphins swimming next to the yacht. I felt so proud they had chosen our boat, but then again there were not many boats out at sea at that time. My husband Luang is extremely interested in the wild and in the rich sea life and spends long periods of time on the boat so he has time and opportunities to look closer to marine life around

the yacht, and to interact with it. He looks closely at the waves and at the fish, at how they swim. He strongly believes that day was a special one, when dolphins came to tell us things, and that we were lucky to be there at that time.Dolphins are peaceful animals that come with harmony. They were probably in the bay that day because they like to hide from

bad weather. This proves we need to look closely to animals so they can warn us, but in order to do so we need to change our busy everyday lifestyle. Whale sharks and dolphins are the most powerful animals out there, and as we keep seeing them over and over we believe they are the same ones visiting us. From the yacht, we also often catch sight of big turtles. To sit on the deck of the yacht and see how these animals move in the water is something I hope all of you can experience once in your lifetime. Walk along any beach here on Koh Jum and scattered among the shells and driftwood you will find a diversity of seeds of all shapes and sizes.

SOME OF THESE SEEDS HAVEN’T JUST FALLEN FROM NEARBY TREES BUT HAVE TRAVELED LONG DISTANCES ON OCEAN currents and happened to have been washed ashore at your feet. If you plant these seeds in a pot some of them will even sprout and grow. The most famous “tropical drift seed” of course is the one you probably enjoyed as a refreshing drink or had in your curry last night, the coconut, found along beaches anywhere in the tropics. Typical of many tropical

drift seeds coconuts have thick woody fiber around the hard exterior of the seed (endocarp) that protects the seed and provides the necessary buoyancy to float on ocean currents.

Coastal beach forests here at the Andaman Sea have many trees whose distribution depends on the ability of their seeds to disperse, floating on ocean currents. Common trees here like the Pandanus Pandanus adoratissimus (Toei Thale) or Tropical Almond, Terminalia catappa (Hu Kuwang) have seeds that survive shorter periods of time drifting and others like the Coconut

Cocos nucifera (Ma Phrao) and Sea Dukat Barringtonia asiatica (Gik) are real marathon drifters, sometimes staying afloat for months. You know the saying what won’t kill you will make you stronger? Well, trees of coastal beach forests are tough, evolving in a habitat that throws a lot of obstacles their way. They start as seeds drifting weeks or months on ocean currents. Washed up above the high tide mark during a tsunami or typhoon, the seedlings grow in poor sandy soils that hold no water, withstanding long periods of drought in the dry season and pounding

wind and salt spray during the monsoon. In fact coastal beach forest trees share many of the same features of desert plants. Tough waxy leaves, salt tolerance, drought tolerance,

and an ability to derive nutrients from poor sandy soils. Coastal beach forests serve as an important barrier in coastal ecology.

Their roots prevent erosion in sandy soils as evidenced by the many still standing after the tsunami. These forests block the salt spray during the monsoon so that less salt tolerant species are able to survive. Walk inland from high tide in any forested area and the trees and plants further back are the ones less adapted to the harsh seashore conditions. For those landscaping here on the Andaman Sea you can learn a lot by observing local beach forest habitats that represent an end point in millions of years of evolution and adaptation to coastal conditions. Landscaping with native trees will require less watering during the dry season. This is important since fresh water is becoming a critical limited resource with the rise of tourist developments. Native plants attract birds, butterflies, bats, and provide refuge for hermit crabs and sunburned tourists. Coastal beach forests here on the Andaman Sea and in most of the tropics are threatened by overdevelopment and are rapidly disappearing. Some species, like the slow growing cycad

Cycas litoralis, have become rare due to mature specimens being harvested and sold to large hotels and resorts. Preserving these habitats is vital not only for the local flora and fauna but for the integrity of the tourist development.

Here on Koh Jum it is not hard to leave the resorts and bungalows behind and still walk along forested beach. In fact

most of the resorts are small and built in amongst the existing beach forests and some resorts like OonLee, Woodland Lodge and Koh Jum Beach Villas are using native trees as an integral part of their landscaping. These forests still hold mysteries like large fruit eating bats, pythons, monitor lizards, and choruses of birds, insects and amphibians that make travel off the beaten path so rewarding.

KOH JUM, ALSO KNOWN AS KOH PU, named after the 420 meter high mountain in the island’s rugged north is situated halfway between Krabi and Koh Lanta Yai, 25 km from Krabi Town. A large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, Koh Jum is home to 1,500 inhabitants in three tiny fishing villages. The population engages mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local craft of cloth weaving. While the north is mountainous, the south comprises dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms. The string of beaches on the west coast has several simple, wooden bungalow resorts and one resort community of private beach homes,

sitting among the palms, each offering sunset views over the silhouettes of the Koh Phi Phi archipelago. Koh Jum is ideal both for young travelers who want to rest their bones after some hard backpacking and for families with kids, looking for a worry free holiday in a place where children can run and swim in complete safety. Nature is at your feet there, and if it’s serenity you’re after, you can’t go wrong. Electricity just arrived in Koh Jum a couple of years ago; some smaller resorts are still powered by generator. Change is imminent; visit Koh Jum before it develops.

GETTING THERE

There is a ferry terminal about 35 - 40km south of Krabi town, in a place called Laem Kruat, that can take you to the islands, the last one departs at around 3pm. It costs around 50 Baht per person. Another option is to take a ferry directly from Krabi or Koh Lanta. This might be an easier and more reliable option for most people. A new ferry service has started from/to Koh Phi Phi Islands. A short stop into your nearest travel agent will furnish you with the latest times and tickets for your journey. Contact the resort you wish to stay at for assistance with transportation.

Ao nang have most of food type for every kind of palate, or so I though. Russian couple Andrew and Rita managed to find the gap in the market!WALKING UP THE AO NANG MAIN STREET LAST MONTH, I noticed a group gathered at a little shop. I paused to see what the common was, while my nostrils inhaled a familiar delicious smell that grabbed me by the hand and led me into the shop to indulge my sweet tooth: crepes!

Smiling Dog Café is a newly renovated petite place that supplies more than just crepes. It has a breakfast menu comprising the usual sets, proper smoothies, and a nice list of great coffee types to end your meal there. The crepes menu offers sweet and savory pancakes served with a variety of fillings - about eight of each - from the most simple with only sugar to elaborate and diverse savoury fillings, in prices that range from 29 to 99 thb. Smiling Dog Café yummy crepe creations, like savoury Tex Mex, Forest Delight, Hunters Joy, MLT; and sweet Chunky Monkey, Caramel Apple, Mango Passion, Nutella (of course) and more, will definitely please you.

Crepes originate from the northwest of France, in Britanny. The word crepe is of French origin, deriving from the Latin crispa, meaning curled. How can one simple butter-flour-milk mixture hold so much potential, you may think? I blame my passion with crepes on a three-day trip to Paris in my youth, when I discovered that the city streets were dotted with gourmet sandwich shops and bakeries that tempted me away from my tourist route. I had so many different crepes that I became nearly addicted. This is the same feeling I am getting here, in Ao Nang. Smiling Dog Café has a sparkly stylish counter, a contemporary décor, and a few little tables for cozy moments and a proper creperie feeling.

frog-maniaYou are sitting in a cafe uncaring of the world and enjoying your tropical holiday when you are approached by an old lady wearing brightly coloured clothing, lots of jewellery and an elaborate hat. You are being confronted by a frog lady.

THE AKHA ARE PROBABLY THAILAND’S MOST VISIBLE ‘HILL-TRIBE’ GROUP AND NOWADAYS YOU CERTAINLY DON’T NEED TO GO ANYWHERE NEAR NORTHERN THAILAND TO COME ACROSS THEM. The sight, and sound, of an Akha woman with a wooden frog will be all too familiar in any of the country’s tourist hot spots, from Phuket to Khao San Road in Bangkok, and Ao Nang has not been left behind. These Little ladies of the colorful Akha hilltribe wander the Ao Nang streets with elaborate colored hats adorned in silver beads, selling handmade crafts and wooden frogs. They are persistent and ubiquitous, and are dabbed the “businesswomen of the hilltribe community”. Many of the younger Akha women are very smart and savvy, speaking better English than many professional guides.Akha villages are to be found in the mountains of China,

Laos, Myanmar (Burma) and Northern Thailand. There are approximately 20,000 Akha living in Thailand’s Northern provinces of Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai at high altitudes. In order to supplement their income, many Akha are now selling handicrafts, employing the traditional skills used in making their own clothing and cultural items. Those in the tourist trade stock up on trinkets in their home villages and bid to seek their fortune in tourist destinations.

They walk the beach road looking for preys to corner. They

usually tap your shoulder, meet your eyes and perform the insistent simulated croaking, until you become the proud owner of the noisy wooden replica reptile. The simple tactic of these merciless ladies is to perform the wood scraped against wood action, which echoes the mournful cry of the humble frog. Declining the offer makes no difference on frog ladies. They have time, a lot of it, and a serene and needful smile, and stand there while the croaking sound bores into your mind, slowly, relentlessly, to make you crack and buy that frog. You don’t want a noisy wooden frog? You will be presented with a hut that resembles anything but a hat. In fact, you are better off buying the frog. Once you have bought that frog (because you will), you need to start using it and joining the army of frog croackers. Remove the stick from the frog’s mouth, draw it lightly over the ridges on its back, you will proudly make that very frog-like croaking sound. Croaaaaak! Hand-carved in Thailand, these beautiful frogs are made from non-endangered wood: raintree wood (the most popular), mango wood, or jackfruit wood. Modern croaking frogs look more similar to the real frogs than their predecessors. And if you regret buying it in the end, they make for a nice present once you get back home, or for a dust collector trinket in your cabinet that forever reminds you of that night out!

MARINA YOGA, KRABI’S FIRST YOGA STUDIO, RECENTLY OPENED THE DOORS OF ITS NEW YOGA Center and arranged for its blessing with the help of local Thais. The elaborate affair of traditional new house blessing is a ceremony during which the house is expelled of all bad spirits and various rites and rituals are conducted.

Marina went to great lengths to ensure every aspect of the ceremony was in keeping with a traditional Thai Buddhist house blessing, organizing a sumptuous buffet of Thai food and fruit for the monks and for the guests. For a house ceremonial blessing an uneven number of monks should be present. Five, seven or nine are the numbers considered to be the most auspicious; five monks were summoned from a Sai Tai temple. I

arrived early to see the monks arranging a Buddha shrine inside the Yoga center. They later seated on pillows, with Marina Thai and foreign friends, Yoga teachers and Yoga students all sat on the floor trying to be at a lower level, to show respect to them.

Before the ceremony can commence, a thread or ‘sai sin’ is tied to the shrine Buddha. As the ceremony got underway the senior monk, having positioned himself by the shrine while Marina and a few close friends knelt right in front of them, passed the sai sin through his hands and then to the monk on his left until the last monk had received it, and they all began to chant prayers in Pali language which are said to ‘vibrate’ through the string to provide protection to the house. This lasted over one hour.

The monks were then offered their last meal of the day, which must be eaten before midday. Again, to show respect to the monks, the guests do not join them. The monks then continued to chant for up to another half an hour before the first monk held the lustral water contained in a bronze pot. This is prepared from ground water and represents the four elements – earth (the drops of wax), fire (the candle flame), wind (the extinguishing of the candle) and water (that in the bowl). This water is blessed by the monks and was sprayed on various parts of the Yoga Center, before finally passing the blessing on to the people.

It was over and at last, I could stretch my legs; now it was our turn to eat. I congratulated Marina for the success of the event, thanking her for giving me the chance to attend such a colorful and auspicious Thai ceremony. Marina’s friends seemed to have been fascinated and somewhat moved by the experience but clearly relieved to be able to stretch their legs.

Last month, Projects Abroad Thailand teamed up with Loving Andaman Sea to organise a joint beach clean-up on Ton Sai beach.

LOVING ANDAMAN SEA IS A LOCAL BEACH CLEAN UP INITIATIVE FOUNDED IN 2011 BY PAOLO SEMPERBONI, a highly motivated environmentalist and owner of The Longtail Boat Restaurant in Ao Nang. Ton Sai is a beautiful stretch of soft sandy beach, nestled between the limestone cliffs, located between Ao Nang and Railay. Due to its laid back atmosphere, chilled out bars and restaurants, world class climbing routes and breath-taking scenery, Ton Sai is a very popular spot with holidaymakers, backpackers, day trippers, and climbers alike. As there is no access to Ton Sai by road, everything is brought in and out by boat, including the trash. Given the high volume of visitors to this small bay, the amount of trash generated is far greater than the trash collection and disposal team can handle. As a result, the beach quickly becomes littered with discarded items.

Debris that collects on these beaches and surrounding costal areas

eventually makes its way into the ocean, in turn killing innumerable mammals, turtles and birds that ingest or become entangled in it. The very thing that makes plastic items useful to consumers, their durability and stability, also makes them a problem in marine environments.

Around 100 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year of which about 10 percent ends up in the sea. About 20 percent of this is from ships and platforms, 80 percent from land (figures: Greenpeace 2011). There is an area in the North Pacific Ocean known as the

Great Pacific Garbage Patch or the Pacific Trash Vortex. This area is the size of Texas with an estimated six kilos of plastic for every kilo of natural plankton, along with other slow degrading garbage that has drifted together from all parts of the world. This island of trash swirls slowly around, endlessly collecting tons of dead or dying fish, marine mammals and birds that get snared.

Projects Abroad Thailand and Loving Andaman Sea understand that protecting the planet’s oceans starts at home. They know how important and vital it is to clean up our local coastal areas, so they got together to arrange a community beach clean at Ton Sai. This was upon the request of

Projects Abroad is one of the leading international volunteer project organisations. Their Thailand Conservation Project is based in Ao Nammao, about 5km away from Ao Nang. They work in close partnership with the local community as well as with national and international organisations, conducting marine research and surveys, reef and beach salvage operations and forest regeneration.

local people who felt it was time to take control of the situation and clean up Ton Sai for themselves.

On a November morning, volunteers met at Noppharrat Thara National Park armed with reusable gloves, biodegradable trash bags and a strong desire to make a difference! After a 20 minute

longtail boat ride along some of the most impressive coastline in Thailand, the

eco-warriors landed at Ton Sai and began

to clean up the beach, recruiting a number of

tourists and longtail boat

drivers along the way! Everyone was grateful for the cloud

cover as they began to collect

a huge amount

of trash, including nets, tarpaulin, plastic and glass bottles, food wrappers, Styrofoam, boat repair parts and engine oil bottles. Within three hours an incredible 571 kg of trash was collected – that’s over half a tonne! A separate longtail boat was needed to transport the full bags of debris back to the mainland. Of the items collected, 83kg was recyclable with

115kg falling into the sharp and dangerous category.

Projects Abroad and Loving Andaman Sea understand that reducing and preventing trash from entering our waterways is one of the easiest ways we can help to protect the ocean. We respectfully ask that when

you visit these beautiful beaches around Krabi, you take home with you one more item of trash than you generated. This way you will help protect this piece of paradise for future generations.

Irish Night at The RoverI LEAN MY ELBOWS ON THE WOODEN TABLE, A PINT OF GUINNES IN MY HANDS AND THE MAGIC OF A GUITAR THAT PLAYS IRISH TUNES IN MY EARS. In my eyes I picture the famous Irish skies, with their rainbows surfacing in between rain and white clouds. A gulp of beer and a dip from the Moher’s cliffs! I let myself be carried along the beach by wind gusts that mess my hair, and the sand, and the ocean’s waves… Someone lays something on the table that smells of bacon and cheese, while I imagine to be chatting with an

old Irish man in a bar at the Galway Harbour.

The singing of an Irish ballad fills my heart with the happy music of a waterfall. I observe the ability of the musician’s fingers and his voice crosses again my imaginary trip: I loose myself amongst fantastic landscapes, with puffy clouds that wrap up the tip of hills and the performance of a solitary ocean, only to find shelter in fishermen villages, drinking beer and listening to their tales.

An Irish dream made possible by the magic atmosphere of an Irish pub in Thailand. Yes, I am sitting at the Irish Rover in Ao Nang, thousands of kilometers away from the famous cliffs of my dreams. However, this haunt the colour of wood, with its warm atmosphere it opens the doors to an imaginary time travel. “This is the effect of Guinnes”, you may think, and

for sure I have found lots of it here, and one of the best I have ever drunk outside of Ireland. But the credit of such a special evening goes to the man who has created this oasis in the heart of the orient. A place with warm colours thanks to ancient paraphernalia and pictures from times past hanging on the walls. And thanks to musician Jon Hicks who, with his tunes and his loveliness, fills the air with an urge to dance.

I TRAVELLED TO AO NANG LAST MONTH FOR A FITNESS HOLIDAY. THE PURPOSE OF MY HOLIDAY WAS TO LEAVE BEHIND THE CRAzY LIFESTYLE OF SYDNEY AND FOCUS ON MY HEALTH. Whilst on my visit I was recommended to try Marina Yoga by a local Ao Nang resident. Never having tried yoga previously I was a little skeptical on what purpose this would serve to my fitness and if I would really see any result. Despite my initial hesitation I took the recommendation on board and made an appointment to attend my first ever class of Yoga.

My journey to the studio was picturesque, as I rode my bike down Na Thai Road and then turned off onto a long pebbled driveway surrounded by rubber trees. The studio itself is a thought through space, from the design to the location to the building. I was greeted on my first class by Celine who would be my instructor for that day. As the class begun, I could tell that yoga was going to be challenging. I finished the first hour and a half thinking wow; I actually did it and felt it! I instantly booked my next visit and over my time in Ao Nang I continually participated in classes.

Through my participation at Marina Yoga I had a range of teachers including Marina and Aon. All three instructors that I had classes with had their own individual style of delivering Yoga and no one class was the same. I constantly felt challenged by their teaching methods. The classes are small and intimate, which allowed the instructors to guide each student individually through the exercises.

People often associate Yoga as a stretching class and I must admit that was my initial perception but after attending Marina Yoga personally, my perception has been forever changed. I now know that Yoga is not only about pushing your body to its limit but it is about mind and soul. I can honestly say that practicing Yoga on my trip was life-changing, and thanks to my experience at Marina yoga I will continue practicing Yoga on my return home.

Today’s destination is the world-renowned Phi Phi Islands archipelago. There are about 40 people onboard impressive Bugis sailing yacht, coming from Finland, Germany, Italy and more countries. All looking forward to a trip that promises lots of sea and sand. I am quite anxious to depart actually. I finally lean my feet on the warm wood of the deck. I enjoy the smooth sailing, lazing between the bridge and the bow of the vessel, spoiling myself on a trip that will catapult us far from the noise of engines and the chatter of too many people. Far to tropical islands. I find my comphy position on the open air; others have already laid towels on the lounge chairs and lay down enjoying the warm sun. I listen to the staff introduction and to a description of our destinations of the day, while I feel the moving of the

first waves under us; my mind rides to the open sea, allowing me to sail like an old sailor. My eyes lose their way on the distance, where there is no border between the waves and the overlapping of the clouds, while my hand feels the vibration of an imaginary helm, as if I had always been a sailor, in control of the rocking of the boat… 11:30 ARRIVAL AT MAYA BAY – LUNCH.…And so I am anchoring my boat off my favourite rock, when a voice awakes me from my mind’s wanderings. The guide helps me get off the boat and lay my feet on a beach, its white sand the consistency of powder. He tells me of the beauty of this island, already dubbed a “legend of cinema”. It feels so nice to be able to enjoy a swim in its crystalline waters. Meanwhile the chef on board is preparing the lunch; a team of longtail boats takes us back on board, to find our generous buffet-style Thai lunch nicely set and waiting for us. Several sea eagles fly over our heads, to indicate the numerous fish that swim inches from the waterline. We are given long enough time to appreciate this

little miracle of nature. This is a quality tour altogether, with a timetable designed to avoid the crowds.

13:30 CRUISING AROUND PHI PHI LEH – PASS BY VIKING CAVE.I find myself on the bow of the sailing boat; I aim at the helm in front of me, and on the horizon I notice the forms of the limestone karst mountain that conceals the Viking Cave. The cave gets its name from the frescoes inside, which apparently no one has yet been able to give a credible explanation about their origins. It is now inhabited by the bird nest collectors.

15:00 DEPART TO BAMBOO ISLAND.The sailing boat proceeds to another precious destination: Bamboo Island. We reach it as the sun is lowering its strength. The beach is practically all for us, silent, blinding in its beauty, gently smooth under our steps and cuddled by waves of a cobalt-green. A stop we all wish to be never-ending. 16:30 Depart Bamboo Island for Sunset Cruise.We now leave in direction Ao Nang. On board, cocktails, red and white wine, beer, fruits and canapés are served while the vessel sails slowly, the sun setting behind the rocks. And I find myself dreaming again, negotiating the waves while a potential storm show up in the distance. I return back to the helm, letting the wind and the waves’ jets slap me. The clouds give in to my will to face the storm, and right when I believe I will be trapped in the rain, they turn back and let the sun free. Once again, a happy yelling distracts me from my dream sailing; I fill in my glass and start to laugh with people around me, happy tourists and skilled guides. I resign to my nostalgic feelings, relaxing music playing from the loudspeakers, the boat passing by fantastic islands: Koh Poda, Koh Tup, Chicken Island, Railay peninsula, and finally the glittering Ao Nang boulevard, with the sun having already disappeared from the scene. 18:30 RETURN TO AO NANG BEACH AND TRANSFER BACK TO

Culture and merit-makingkoh lanTa

KOH LANTA IS SITUATED IN THE SOUTHERNMOST TIP OF THE KRABI PROVINCE. It consists of two islands, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two islands and does not have tourist facilities. Visitors traveling by road from the main land pass through the smaller island on the way to Koh Lanta Yai, the center of the tourist operations. Ban Sala Dan village, in the north of the island, is Lanta Yai’s commercial center, and the pier where visitors arrive on the island. It is a row of shops, seafood restaurants on stilts, dive shops, tour operators, banks and guest houses that cater for new comers on the island. The bulk of the Lanta beaches lie along the west coast of the island and can all be reached by road: Khao Kwang, Khlong Dao and Phra Ae all have long stretches of white sand facing the Andaman sea, while Khlong Khong, Khlong Nin and Ba Kan Tiang and other smaller bays are all nice to relax and swim. The east coast of Koh Lanta Yay is flat and has many local villages scattered along its coastline. Koh Lanta has a very diverse cultural mix of people who have lived on the island in harmony for hundreds of years: Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original sea gypsies still inhabit the place in harmony. The biggest town on the island is Lanta Old town. Boat trips to Koh Lanta are available during the monsoon

free period from October to April. May to November see the closure of some of the island businesses and of the boat passenger services due to rough seas. A minibus service is the alternative way to reach the island via land.

LANTA OLD TOWNIt was once called Ban Si Raya and was the commercial port for Chinese and Arabic trading boats that sailed between the ports of Phuket, Penang and Singapore. Today it is a village with a few rows of stilted shop houses home to an ancient community that was established on the island long ago. It is a picturesque place with, these Chinese timer shop-houses date back 100 years, from the old days of sea trading. Near the shacks along the coast, local fishermen dock their longtail boats giving the whole scene a very Thai look.BA KANTIANG BEACHSpectacular crystal–clear seawater and soft white sand, romantic sunsets in utmost privacy, this is why Ba Kantiang has come to symbolize a hideaway in Lanta for relaxing in natural surroundings.LIGHTHOUSE ON LANTALocated in Tanod Cape, on the southernmost tip of the island, the lighthouse tower of Lanta is the perfect symbol of solitude. It is the place where immaculate nature still survives as it is rarely reached by tourists due to the rugged road conditions.

KOH LANTA NATIONAL PARKThe park covers a marine area dotted with several small sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs. The headquarters is located on the island’s southern extremity.BAN SAN-KA-UA sea gypsy’s settlement in south-east Lanta Yai. It is there that an old clan of traditional Chao Ley try to preserve a disappearing way of life in this fast-developing island.ECO-TOURSThese are run all year round from the east coast of Lanta Yai, not affected by the low season rough seas.Make your way to Thung Yee Pheng village for a trip with a local community, or book a tour with friendly and experienced local companies.NATUREBecause of its bio-diversity and richness of natural resources, Lanta is a good place for trekking. Explore limestone cave chambers and passageways in the Lanta caves, or walk upstream to the spring water waterfall, where to swim in cool rock pools.FIRE DANCINGThis is definitely one interesting part of the Lanta beach culture. A fire dancing show is usually performed by young boys performing twisting acrobatics swinging burning torches and ropes lit on fire around their muscular bodies. A distinguishing show that sparkles in the dark.

volunTeering aT lanTa animal Welfarehard, fun and rewarding work

I FOUND LANTA ANIMAL WELFARE (LAW)

online and it looked perfect for me. Just out of school, I was taking a gap year and wanted to work with animals somewhere exciting before starting university and studying veterinary

medicine. Three months of hard, fun and rewarding work later, I could definitely say I had found the right place for me!

LAW is a fantastic organization – there is a large population of stray cats and dogs on the island of Koh Lanta and LAW is working towards sterilizing and vaccinating them all, along with pets owned by islanders and visitors, in order to increase their welfare and quality of life. Volunteers work hard; we did six-hour shifts, six days of the week, making breakfast and dinner for the 30 resident dogs and 20-odd cats, cleaning out cages, giving medication, changing dressings, walking dogs, playing with puppies (always a favourite) and helping out in surgery. It’s demanding work, and sometimes emotional, as animals are treated very differently in the East as to how we Westerners treat them, so conditions aren’t always favourable. However, for every sad case, there are many happy ones – it’s fantastic to see a dog or cat re-homed to a loving family after treatment, something that is definitely increasing.

Volunteers also give tours of the centre to tourists and help them with walking dogs if they so desire. The centre runs entirely on donations, so tourist visits are an essential part of the day-to-day running of LAW. During my time at the centre I got the chance to help ‘spread the word’ about a big sterilization week that the centre was organizing – it was great to be able to talk to islanders about what LAW does and try and raise awareness of the importance of sterilization and vaccines. It seemed to work, with the number of people bringing in animals to surgery increasing. I also got to work at the LAW stall at the ‘Lanta Laanta’ festival, which takes place in the island’s atmospheric Old Town every March. If you are around during that time, you should definitely check it out. There’s lots of music, dancing, local crafts and souvenirs, fire shows, and (most importantly?!) food. Our stall was selling Time for Lime mojitos and LAW t-shirts to raise funds for the centre, the mojitos in particular went down very

To this date LAW has sterilized and Rabies vaccinated more than 3,000 animals. LAW does not receive any help from local authorities, to continue the important work they do, THEY NEED HELP FROM YOU!

Also a few words on the location: Koh Lanta is a gorgeous island in the Andaman – all white sandy beaches and blue sea. Many a day off was spent zoning out on one of the many beaches, or going on a snorkeling trip to Ko Rok, part of the marine national park that surrounds Koh Lanta and is only an hour away by speedboat! There is lots to do on your day off: exploring on your moped (the best way to get around), caving in the south of the island, hitting one of the many cute beach bars for a cold Singha beer, heading up to the main port of Saladan for a wander around the market stalls) or chilling out at Time For Lime. This is the bar, restaurant and cooking school run by the founder of LAW and I would definitely recommend the cooking class – you learn to make five awesome Thai dishes and eat them too. Profits from Time for Lime go to LAW, so every mojito counts, and damn they are good mojitos…

So, in short, if you want to make a difference and are thinking of volunteering with LAW, do it! It’s a really worthwhile charity, run by great people who really care about their cause and you will learn a lot during your time there, however long that is. I came away from my placement with lots of photos, lots of memories plus new

knowledge and new friends that will be with me for many years!

PAUL FASSE, A GERMAN VETERINARY DOCTOR, after finding Lanta Animal Welfare center on the Internet and studying the goals and structure of the organization, decided to engage as a volunteer vet for a period of 1 month. Paul has been running his own Vet clinic in Germany for ten years, more info on www.tierarztpraxis-eldagsen.de

Paul was running the veterinary part of the clinic for the whole month of November, paying for his own flight and lodging, and fundraised for six months in order to raise money to purchase an electro-cutter as a donation to the centre. The center now has the machine, which will be very handy for a variety of operations like lump removals and amputations.

Rarely the service of a professional vet is offered for free, so this was a golden opportunity for Lanta Animal Welfare founder Junie Kovacs and manager Jon Corke.

Weight, meditation/stress level, nutrition, antioxidants, exercise, smoking, alcohol are all factors that research proves effects us. Most of us actually know how we are supposed to live in order to have a long and healthy life.

Add a salad to every meal, walk to work, take the stairs instead of the elevator and very soon you feel and see the difference. Before you know it you begin some kind of training, learn to meditate, eat healthier and you feel so much happier. And the best thing is that you finally kept this promise to yourself.

easT is...Lanta’s Eastern Islands are definitely off the beaten track. They are easily accessible from the main pier in Lanta Old Town. If you’re looking for a secluded beach to call your own, some great snorkeling or some adventurous caving, these islands have it all.

KO BUBU IS AN ISLAND GEM APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 4 NAUTICAL MILES FROM LANTA OLD TOWN. It is a Robinson Crusoe island with thick vegetation in the middle, some 10-15 bungalows with a restaurant, sugar-fine sand, helpful locals, and foreign visitors that can be counted on the fingers of two hands (and that is at the peak of the season). It’s the sort of “get-away-from-it-all-and-lie-in-a-hammock” type of concept. Waters around the island are crystal-clear, with some opportunities for snorkeling and fishing off the rocks. The few local workers are friendly, helpful, and discreet. There is a nice walking trail for a short trek around the entire island, look for a large family of Southern Pied Hornbills that are usually spotted at sunset when it cools down. Ko Kam is east of Lanta Old Town in between Ko BuBu and Ko Talabeng. Completely deserted, it’s a fine spot for a swim, exploring or a BBQ on the beach. A lone fisherman’s shack sits on the beach; a resting spot for weary Thai and Chao Ley fisher folk.

Ko Nui is a small spit of sand approximately 200 meters in circumference. It’s completely deserted and that is its appeal. With splendid views to all the of islands on Ko Lanta’s East coast, it is a relaxing spot for a cool swim, some beach exploring or for the more adventurous; spend the night sleeping under the magnificent stars. Ko Nui is located close to Ko Lanta Noi or about 5 nautical miles from Lanta Old Town.

Ko Por has a long stretch of sandy beach for swimming on its north coast, located opposite the pier of Lanta Old Town. Ko Por is a short sail from Ko Lanta. Most of Ko Por’s 500 residents

are Muslim fisher folks; it has one primary school, a mosque, a nursery, a general store and a community bank. As Ko Lanta rapidly develops, the islanders on Ko Por wish to protect and maintain their natural resources in accord with their Muslim beliefs in order to provide a sustainable base for the future of their families. Please don’t bring alcohol, no gambling, dress discreetly and kindly respect the Muslim way of life.

Ko Talabeng is located off the East coast of Ko Lanta Noi; it is a limestone island similar to Koh Phi Phi Lay. It is also famous in the itinerary of many kayak and long tail trips originating from Lanta Old Town or Tung Yeen Peng village on Ko Lanta. Ko Talabeng does have a few small beaches and during a low tide it’s a perfect spot for a relaxing swim next to the magnificent sheer cliffs. For the more daring you could explore some steep cliffs by foot and rope and visit an intriguing cave located at Talabeng Noi. Keep and lookout for small grey Macaw monkeys clinging to the rocks.

Consider an annual travel insurance policy– if you are planning more than one foreign trip it is often cheaper to take out an annual travel insurance policy, rather than a one-off policy per trip. Again, there are many online comparison sites that are designed to help you locate the best deal. Don’t purchase your currency at the airport – it is usually always more expensive! A little bit of advance planning will ensure that you get the best exchange rate and prevent you from paying through the nose for your Thai baht, last minute!

ACCOUNTING MATTERS

WiTHHolDing TaxWithholding Tax is a tax collected by a deduction made on a payment when said payment is made. The payer who will remit it to the Revenue department on behalf of the payee collects the tax. The tax the payer collect and remit to the Revenue department on behalf of the payee will become a credit that will apply against the income tax (personal or corporate) due by the payee. The most well known withholding tax is the tax deducted from the wage of an employee by the employer but there are more than a hundred type of transactions subjected to withholding tax.

WITHHOLDING TAXES ON LOCAL REMITTANCES In Thailand they are many categories of payments subjected to withholding taxes. Many foreign investors during the first few months of their presence in Thailand forget to withhold taxes on their payments. This is a costly mistake because the payer is responsible towards the Revenue Department for the payment of the withholding tax. If you forget to collect the withholding tax when you make a payment to a supplier you might have problems to claim it back from the supplier. There are 20 main categories of income subject to withholding taxes not included the sub-categories. Rates of withholding tax are between 0.75% and 10% for the withholding tax on dividends. Among other, there is 2% withholding tax on advertising charges, 3% on services, 5% on rentals (if the payee is a juristic person) and 10% if the payee is a taxable foundation. For example, your company hired a service provider in Thailand and need to pay a service fee of 100,000 THB to said service provider. Now your provider should calculate in its invoice as follows:

100,000 THB +VAT@ 7% (7000 THB of VAT) = 107,000 THB100,000 THB – Withholding Tax @ 3% (3000 THB of Withholding Tax) = 97,000 THB97,000 THB (100,000 THB-3% Withholding Tax) + 7,000 THB of VAT = 104,000 THBAmount your company will have to pay to the Revenue Department on behalf of your service provider: 3,000 THB

The withholding tax payment you have made to the Revenue Department on behalf of your service provider will become a credit against your service provider company corporate income tax. The form you use to pay the withholding tax to the Revenue Department will depend of the type of payment. A company that withholds tax on a payment made to another company will use the P.N.D.53 withholding tax returns form. A company that withholds tax on a payment made to an individual (monthly rent, services…) will use the P.N.D.3 withholding tax returns form. Finally, a company that withholds tax on the payment of individuals’ income such as for example salaries must use the P.N.D.1 withholding tax returns form. In all the cases mentioned

above the company needs to file the form within 7 days from the end of the month of the payment.Finally, the P.N.D.1 kor is the annual withholding tax return for individuals that contain for example the summary of the tax withhold during the year on employees salary income. The company will need to file this form before the end of February of the year that follows the year when the payments were made.

REFUND OF THE WITHHOLDING TAX

Withholding Tax is why even companies that are incurring losses end-up paying corporate income tax. Now assume that your company had lost 200,000 THB in 2010. As a result of this loss, your company does not have in theory to pay corporate income tax. While your company does not have to pay corporate income tax (because it incurred a loss) on its 2010 exercise, it may have during the year built a withholding tax credit. For example, if your company is a service company, your clients have paid on your company behalf withholding taxes with the Revenue Department upon payment of your invoices. Now assume that your withholding tax credit with the Revenue Department for 2009 is 200,000 THB. If your company does not need to pay corporate income tax, you may be tempted to ask the Revenue Department to refund the withholding tax your clients have paid on behalf of your company over the year. After all you have a right to it. Should you claim a withholding tax refund? No, we do not recommend you to do it because it will trigger a tax audit from your company. Actually, your company will be audited by the tax administration every year anyway. However, the audit will be more scrupulous if the tax administration knows that you have requested a refund of your withholding tax. Therefore, it is best to wait for the tax administration to complete its yearly audit account of your company financial statement. If there is a small problem with your financial statements, you can use the withholding tax refund as a negotiating tool. Note that once the tax audit is completed and even if there were no problems, it is still recommendable to “donate” your withholding tax to the Revenue Department for the benefit of Thailand.
