ConurbationKrems is located West of Vienna at the Danube,at the entrance to the famous vine-region"Wachau". Being famous as a city of tourism andculture Krems is also a regional centre,traditionally a place of industry and trade whichtakes advantage of the Danube and the harbour.Recently the city has launched strongly the fieldsof academic education and research (especially inbio-technology). In spite of the economic growthand success which has been bringing a lot offirms and working forces to the city Krems still isfamous for its quality of life.

SiteThe district Lerchenfeld is located east of thehistorical centre. Until the post war periodLerchenfeld was an empty space between atraditional housing district and a satellite-projectof the 1930s (industry and housing for theworkers). Since 50 years building developmenthas led to a fragmented mixture of one familyhousing, industrial areas, storage areas, socialhousing, agricultural areas, green abandonedfragments. Along three sides railway tracksisolate the area from the surrounding city andallow only very few crossing points.

ProgrammeThe particular framing of the site might havesupported the inner autonomy: socialinfrastructures as well as commercial spacesand sports areas already provide a "sprawled"variety of services. To initiate dynamics of "innergrowth" new traffic-links across the railways areunder discussion. The competition shouldpromote the existing "specialty" of the area: amix of different uses in touch of each other. 5sites with 5 highly specific framing conditionsare put to test: they provide a cross section ofLerchenfeld's urban reserve.

Issuesfunctional : The quantitative and qualitative relation between conflictualprograms like housing, commerce and leisure is considered to be decisive for thefuture urban "performance" of Lerchenfeld.

social : Lerchenfeld actually does not grow. The district's high capacity ofproduction is countered by a low image. Densification shall help the existingcommercial and public facilities to survive.

perceptual : The task consists in a serious confrontation with the existingheterogeneity and its additive logics of singular projects. These logics have beenproducing a lot of voids which would enhance because of the still ongoingemigration of firms.
