Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd (KPCL) today said it has launched, in association with CONCOR, a new weekly direct container rail service connecting the country’s central region to the east coast and beyond.

The inaugural train left from Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal (KPCT) today with a full load of MAERSK Line import containers, it said.

“The new rail transit will run a direct shuttle service between ICD (Inland Container Depot), Nagpur to KPCT in record 55 hours, at competitive freight rates,” the company said in a statement.

The service is set to offer huge benefits for EXIM shipments between central India and trade destinations like China, far east, Australia, Bangladesh and West Africa, it said.

KPCL CEO Anil Yendluri said: Our new service offering is all set to revolutionise the EXIM trade dynamics for central and east India as shipping over KPCT can reduce at least one week’s transit time vis--vis shipping via west coast ports and with the new freight rail service in place, traders can further rationalise time and costs, availing a direct entry into the port.

The service will provide shipping lines, forwarders, tank operators and cargo-owners, a seamless route between Krishnapatnam Con-tainer Terminal and central India including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, minimising congestion and facili-tating swift movement of containers, it said.

Empty containers will be made available at ICD, Nagpur for movement to KPCT, it added.

The Container Corporation of India (Concor) and the Krishnapatnam port launched a direct container rail service here on Tuesday to boost containerised exports and imports between Central India and China, Korea, Japan and South East Asia.

Competitive rates

The weekly direct service from Krishnapatnam to Nagpur will reduce transportation time from 80 hours on the road to 65 hours.

This is expected to boost exim trade through offering competitive freight rates to exporters and importers of Central India.

The inaugural train left from the Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal for the Inland Container Depot, Nagpur, with a full load of Maersk Line import containers.

Speaking on the occasion, port Chief Executive Officer Anil Yendluri said that the direct rail service would revolutionise exim dynamics for Central and East India as traders can now rationalise time and costs.

These connectivity partnerships are set to project the Krishnapatnam port as the most convenient and trade efficient gateway on the east coast periphery.

Nagpur has been chosen for this linkage as it is one of the most preferred industrial and commercial hubs with the ambitious Interna-tional Cargo Hub and Airport (Mihan) project reinforcing its investment opportunities.

The new service has 45 wagons carrying 90 containers per trip.

The train service will help customers avail huge savings per cargo container while also eliminating the chances of pilferage which has been a major issue for businesses. Moreover unlike road transport, which involves multiple examinations even after taking prior customs clearance of the containers, the train can directly enter the port without any further examination, benefitting customers.

The new service will feature up to 45 wagons capable of carrying over 90 containers per trip — and will initially run once a week at highly competitive terminal handling charges which will reduce transportation time from 80 hours taken on the road, to just 55 hours. With the custom clearance designed to be executed either at the port or at the ICD basis customers’ requirement and convenience the new service offering is slated to save huge time and costs involved to the EXIM fraternity.

The service will offer a 24x7x365 customer service desk to help shippers avail real-time information on connectivity, container availabil-ity, freight rates, cargo tracking among others. The shippers can make direct payment to CONCOR subject to liner approvals.
