KRISTIANSAND
Southern Norway –Sørlandet to the Norwegians – is a delightful part of the country. Here the landscape is tranquil. Along the wonderful coastline hundreds of rocky islands, islets and skerries act as a protec-tive shield from the open sea. Inland the forested hills and valleys are gentle. In the town and villages the mood is friendly and the pace comfortably relaxed. Almost on the southernmost tip of Norway is the pleasant town of Kristiansand. Founded in 1641 by the Danish-Norwegian king, Christian IV, as a strategic port. Today it is the fifth largest town in Norway and the number one holiday destination for the domestic market. Kristiansand dips her toes in the sea and leans her back onto the forest. In the heart of town modern architecture stands shoulder to shoulder with historic buildings. Kristiansand is big enough to give you plenty to do, yet small enough to be thoroughly enjoyed in a day. It is an ideal stop on a cruise itinerary. As strategic as it was for King Christian IV, it still is the gateway to Norway and to the Baltic.
Welcome to Kristiansand. Let us surprise you.

from farms in the valley of Setesdal. The buildings date from the late 1500s
to the 1890s. You then go by coach to the village of Søgne where you visit
a small church from 1640. The church is simple on the outside yet exquisitely
decorated inside. You get the opportunity to walk through a charming street of
white timber buildings so typical of the region. You return to the ship by driving

maritime canal between two islands. Aligning with this narrow canal on either
side are quaint timber houses built around 1800 in the traditional southern
style. After nearly 2 hours onboard the sightseeing boat you dock at a small

With the authentic old railway station buildings, the stylish teak carriages, the
century old locomotives and the smell of burning coal, you can join in on a
unique journey. The beautiful scenery is only an added bonus. When opened
in 1896 this narrow-gauge railway (1067 mm / 3´6”) dramatically changed
people´s lives by connection the isolated valley of Setesdal and the town of
Kristiansand. For nearly 70 years the railway transported people, livestock and
various products from the valley. The railway was closed down in 1962 but
reopened as a heritage railway two years later, as the country´s first railway
museum. Your bus takes you to the station of Grovane where you board the
steam train. The staff on board the train are mostly volunteers with a pas-
sion for the heritage railway. Today 7.97 km out of the original 78 km track is
preserved. The steam train winds its way through the valley, a tunnel, across a
dam and along a timber slide. After the delightful 26 minute journey to Røyknes
station you board the bus and return to the ship. A very popular tour, not only
for the train spotter.

The Ansgar academy is located in the midst of beautiful Hånes and is one of
Kristiansand’s best kept secrets. Not only does this academy offer its students
everything from music, theology, and psychology; they have created a fantastic
chapel as well. The Ansgar Chapel, designed and developed by the highly ac-
credited artist Kjell Nupen, is first and foremost a room for silence, wonder and
amendment. Kjell Nupen, who himself resides in Hånes, highly appreciates this
work of art. The coloured stained glass windows shift character in accordance
with the light outside. The figure of Christ and the altar are elements that
elevate the art experience and bring forth ecclesiastical solemnity. A short
scenic coach tour of Kristiansand city centre conclude the excursion before
you return to the ship.
The excursion can be combined with a visit and guided tour to Søm Church that
also houses beautiful stained glass paintings by Kjell Nupen.

After a short coach drive you arrive at the Kristiansand Cannon museum, Vara
Battery, the second largest cannon ever to be mounted on land. Construc-tions here started in 1941 during the German occupation of Norway. Battery
Vara and a sister battery in Denmark were built to guard the shipping lanes
of the Skagerak and the entrance to the Baltic. The distance between them
was 116 km, and the range of the 38 cm cannons were 55 km from either
side. The closing of the Skagerak was effective and therefore the battery was
never used in active warfare. One of the original four cannons make up the
museum, the only remaining example of its type today. The museum also contains
bunkers, radio room, machine room and munitions storage. A short scenic

The main cruise quay in Kristiansand is situated on the island of Odderøya,
an island rich in history and nature. In the 1660s this former peninsula
was separated from the mainland by a canal which is still in use today. As
the island provides a natural point of defense it has been used for military
activity since the 1660s until the 1990s. During much of this time the island
has been closed to the public. Today Odderøya is a very popular place for
hiking. During this 3 km (2 miles) trek you will enjoy the nature and learn some
of the history, such as the role Odderøya played during WWII. The vantage
points on the island provide wonderful views of the city centre and far out

HIKING ODDERØYA
Visitors to Setesdal 150 years ago may have perceived it as a place handed
over from olden times. People lived in simple log houses, wore quaint clothing
and spoke a language that could clearly be traced back to the old Vikings.
At that time, the steamer "Bjoren (from 1867) provided the most convenient
way to travel. Today it is an experience in itself. A practically silent trip where
the steam engine's steady beat takes you on a tour of one of Norway's many
lakes, Byglandsfjorden, surrounded by tall mountains and beautiful nature.
The tour starts by the sea and ends in Bygland - where the mountain area
begin and Bjoren is docked. At the authentic buildings at Bygland museum you
may experience some of the ambiance from former times, when the flames
of the fireplace cast bewitching shadows on the log walls. At "Glashytta" next
door, you can observe glass blowing and shop at the factory outlet. Local food
and refreshments are available at the small restauarant "Bryggja". We also
recommend a stroll along the beach.

Grimstad is an idyllic town at the seaside, east of Kristiansand. There are
unique opportunities for relaxation, a good meal and shopping in niche shops
in the unique town center, with its traditional white wooden houses and quaint
streets. One of the highlights of our trip to Grimstad is a visit to the Ibsen
Museum. Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) was a Norwegian playwright who became
world famous for the plays like "A Doll's House," "Hedda Gabler" and "Ghosts".
He lived in Grimstad in his youth where he was an apothecary's apprentice. De-
spite the harsh conditions and long working hours, he found the time to involve
himself in the social life and write poetry and plays. While living here he also
released his first play «Catilina» (1850).
