Each day, veterinarians makes decisions about dental care.
It is important that these decisions are made on the basis of the best
available scientific evidence and that the treatments that follow are of
high quality.
Periodontal disease is an infection. It is initiated by bacterial plaque, a
biofilm that accumulates on the tooth surface. Hundreds of bacterial
species have been identified in the oral cavity and the tissue destruction
is a result of complex interactions between the host and the bacterial
plaque. The greater the body’s inflammatory response to bacterial
endotoxines and other by products the greater the tissue damage.
Plaque may be seen only in small quantities or only subgingival but it is
still responsible for the tissue response and damage.
The term periodontal disease refers to the spectrum of diseases that
affect the periodontium. The periodontium is the anatomic structure
that holds the tooth in the alveolar bone and allows it to be used
for chewing, biting etc. The periodontium consist of the gingiva, the
cementum, the periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone.
The stages of periodontal disease are:
1. Gingivitis, uncomplicated gingivitis is completely reversible with
initiation of proper home care.
2. Early periodontitis, includes alveolar bone loss up to 25% of
the affected root surface. At this time the disease may be
stopped with professional dental treatment and home care
provided by the owner. Periodontitis is an irreversible disease,
but if kept under control the teeth can remain in the mouth for
the rest of the animal’s life.
3. moderate periodontitis, a more severe stage of periodontitis with
bone loss up to 50% of the affected root surface. It is more
difficult to maintain normal long term use of the teeth because of
weakness of the periodontal structures.
4. Advanced periodontitis, severe periodontal damage with more
than 50% of the bone lost on the affected teeth. The animal is
now in great risk of losing its teeth.
A patient with an active periodontal disease is suffering from septicemia
every time it eats. If the patient is compromised in its immune,
endocrine, or metabolic systems there is risk of compromising the
animals overall health. The older the animal - the greater the risk. It
seems that dogs of small breeds are more prone to periodontal disease.
Patients should be scheduled before there is a problem - much as
humans go to their dental hygienist for a prophylactic cleaning twice a
year to prevent the occurrence of periodontal disease. Healthy cats and
dogs should have a routine professional dental checkup under general
anesthetic once a year for their entire life as a maintenance procedure.
why wait until irreversible disease occur instead of just preventing it?
veterinary dentistry is currently undergoing a tremendous modernization.
The days of having a technician clean tartar visible above the gum line,
and “pull loose teeth” are gone. Practice standards today dictate a
higher level of oral care for our patients. Dental unit, dental radiology and
high quality hand instruments is a vital part of those standards. In fact it
is not possible to provide good quality dental care without it.
most dental pathology lies underneath the gingival margin, and cannot
be visualized clinically. without dental radiographs, you will miss most
of the oral problems present in your patients, possibly leaving them
in discomfort for years. Additionally, failure to use dental radiology will
result in missed revenue, from both the radiographs and the resulting
treatment provided.
Periodontal disease is the most prevalent disease in veterinary hospitals
today, yet most practice revenue stream for dentistry is low. The patient,
the owner and the practice all benefit from a higher level of dental care.

Small Animal Dentistry Equipment – probably the best investment you will ever makeClinics that have invested in equipment for developing the dental practice soon find that it is hard to imagine an investment that pays for itself as quickly as in this instance, the main reason for this being the fairly large amount of extra revenue that is generated by putting focus on dental work. Once you invest in the right equipment, not only will you find your dental work much easier and much more satisfying, but you will also have suc-ceeded in putting more focus on this somewhat ignored part of veterinary practice. Approximately 70-80% of all cats and dogs over the age of two are estimated to have some sort of periodontal disease, so even with the most cau-tious estimate for compliance there is still a lot of potential in this area, if you choose to develop it. Take a look at the examples below or contact your KRUUSE sales representative for calculations which are custom-made for your clinic.

In other words – if you think there’s more than 2 dental treatments a month on average the investment in Small Animal Dentistry Equipment will not only pay for it self – it will start increasing your revenue.

Power is permanently set at a high 42,000 Hz frequency (cycles) yet is safe to use in periodontal pockets up to 13mm deep. No other Veterinary Ultrasonic Scaler can do this safely!Lightweight handpiece with finger on/off control right where you need it, eliminating troublesome foot control altogether.
Rapidly removes plaque and calculus from all tooth surfaces, while using a lighter touch on the enamel
than required of other ultrasonic scalers.Unit supplied with universal and perio titanium tips and spare ferrite rod. Autoclavable handpiece and tips. Unlike other ultrasonic scalers the 42-12uses its revolutionary rotational tip movement and ultrasonic frequency to remove plaque and calculus (like an ultrasonic jewellery or instrument cleaner). Try the finger test: if you can hold the tip of your scaler in your fingertips, it’s safe to use sub-gingivally.

Unlike other ultrasonic tooth scalers that use a ‘jack hammer’ approach to tooth scaling, the 42-12 adopts a more gentle technique with its revolutionary rotational tip movement, and ultrasonic removal of the plaque and calculus (like a water bath instrument or jewellery cleaner).
The 42-12 rapidly removes heavy calculus deposits from all tooth surfaces and is safe to use in periodontal pockets up to 13mm deep.
The 42-12 achieves a highly polished finish on the tooth with less enamel damage by using an exceptionally high ultrasonic frequency of 42,000Hz, coupled with an extremely low amplitude of the titanium scaler tip’s circular movement of 0.02mm.

Getting Started
im3 Dental Stations can be found throughout the world from Asia and the USA to Europe.
Veterinary Dentistry is the way to improve your bot-tom line and your clients’ appreciation of what you do.
An often quoted figure is 80% of all small animals over 2 years of age have some form of periodontal disease... Are you treating them? If not, why not?
Dentistry should not be thought of as cosmetic, but rather a total health solution as periodontal disease can and does affect the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. Bad breath is the first sign – and owners hate it.
You will need:
• An air driven Dental Unit, preferably with a fibre optic light in the high speed handpiece to enable you to see what you are doing... (overhead lights don’t work as your head gets in the way)
• A scaler that can scale sub-gingival pockets, the source of plaque and ultimately calculus.
Hand scaling is too laborious and too time consuming.
With the right equipment and a lecture or two from a veterinary dental specialist you are on your way... A canine can be extracted from start to finish in under 10 minutes... Now armed with all this knowledge and the right equipment, you’re ready.

Rock and Rolls with the blue colour indicates im3’s unique lubrication. Plastic OSCILLATING disposable prophy angles complete with rubber cup, ready-to-use. The oscillating action allows the cup to remain on the tooth longer without heat build-up, and the problem of pulling muzzle hair from the patient is eliminated.
Dispose after each patient to reduce cross-infection. Low cost, maintenance and guaranteed to last one complete prophy.
• Individually packed
• Replaceable snap-on prophy cup
• Does not catch muzzle hair
• Does not splatter prophy paste
• Does not tear or cut soft tissue
CLS Solution CLS is a uniquely formulated dental solution designed to reduce bur cutting time and mask mouth odours.
CLS contains chlorhexidine, glycerin, alcohol (ethanol) and a spearmint odour mask.
• Used in im3’s unique flush system for the high speed handpiece to minimise bacterial and slime build-up.
• im3 guarantees that CLS Solution when prepared and used as directed will not block the water system of any dental machine or Ultrasonic Scaler (normal chlorhexadine will).
• Trials in the U.S. have shown a substantial reduction in bur cutting time when glycerin is used in the solution.
• Chlorhexidine is light sensitive and must be used in either a brown PET bottle or an opaque plastic tank (1L Brown PET Bottles are available through im3)
• Glycerin will help lubricate high speed handpiece turbines when used as a handpiece flush.
• Nurses and veterinarians prefer the fresh spear-mint smell to mask mouth odours.
• 250ml Concentrate – Just add distilled water to make 1L of working solution
Benefits: Owner’s love the fresh breath and the new zest for life you have given their
pet following the dental procedure!”
Important Note: Products containing chlorhexadine may cause odema in the throats of cats and small dogs with prolonged oral use. Switch to water in any procedure over 20 minutes and packing the back of the throat will minimise this risk.
“I have used CLS successfully for 7 or 8 years for procedures taking less than 20 minutes. For longer than that I switch to water and flush the socket after with CLS and religiously pack every throat with a tampon as well as raising up a shoulder with a rolled towel.”DR. KIm KENDALL, EAST CHATSWOOD CAT CLINIC NSW, 2006

iC Plaque Why iC plaque is a must for every veterinary clinic!
Plaque is the cause of periodontal disease. The plaque needs to be removed before it hardens into more calculus, forms in the gingival sulcus and gingivitis turns into periodontitis (oral osteomylitis). Periodontitis brings attachment loss, bone loss and eventually, tooth loss. There is systemic damage occurring in the kidneys, liver and heart when plaque is present in the mouth.
The im3 iC Plaque Disclosing Swabs show when plaque is present on the teeth. These applicators are quick and easy to use. By simply rolling the swab gently across the teeth at the gum edge the plaque stains pink to indicate germ-filled layers on the teeth. This is a visible sign of periodontal disease. And it’s there simple and easy for your client to see.
• Plaque is the cause of Periodontal Disease
• Plaque is invisible until stained
• Highlights the areas where plaque is present – you will be suprised by how much plaque is present!
• It is a helpful tool in painting a picture of the animal’s oral health for the owner
• Useful when scaling the animal’s teeth to ensure that all the plaque has been removed during the procedure
• Saves time scaling, by indicating the plaque and Calculus not stains on the teeth
• Will increase dental procedures within the clinic
• Quick and easy to use
iM3 R&R Prophy Paste
Adequate dental polishing is a must!No matter what method is used to remove supragingival calculus and plaque (ultrasonic scaler, sonic scaler or hand scaling), grooves are left in the enamel surface. Unless the enamel surface is polished smooth using polishing cups and the appropriate paste, it will attract more plaque.
R&R polishing paste has been specially formulated for use with im3 R&R oscillating disposable prophy angles.
Convenient to use individual cups help reduce cross contamination and minimise the transfer of viruses between animals. No splatter and contains no fluoride or flavour oils. Packaged in a convenient box of 200 individual 2g units with finger holder supplied free of charge.
• Specially formulated for animal use

Clear Jaw ModelThese new clear dental models take the guesswork out of veterinary dentistry! By allowing you to observe the tooth and root patterns of a typical feline jaw, these hinged models let you demonstrate to your clients why a procedure is necessary and what will be involved.
Also included with the jaw is an education card. This valuable card helps you easily identify which approach to take and the instruments needed to precisely section and excise teeth by comparing the patient to the model and card, saving you valuable time under anaesthetic.

Dogs and Cats Winged ElevatorThe winged edge of the elevator is designed to expand the alveolus (tooth socket) by expanding it as the instrument is ‘rocked’ in the periodontal ligament space.
The tip is moved down the tooth root in a rolling fashion. Widening the alveolus and moving gently down the tooth root will reduce the risk of fracturing the tooth and root during extraction. The four sizes make them ideal for cats to large dogs.

Wedge Dental Sharpening StoneThe wedge sharpening stone has a flat surface with a radius on either side. most dental hand instruments including elevators, curettes and scalers can be sharpened.
Dental hand instruments should be kept sharp and true to their original design. For best results, instruments should be sharpened after use. The stone can be used with water, oil or dry.
