Greetings to all. As I sit here atmy computer during the middle of February, we have finally seen to-day that maybe spring is not faraway. We here in the United Stateshave suffered through a difficultwinter – floods on the West Coast,cold in the South, record snow falland freezing temperatures through-out the Midwest and East Coast –it has been very dark and drearyhere since Christmas.

But our recent Sunday Liturgi-cal Readings from Scripture painta similar picture – that the dark-ness we experience beyond just theweather, in our everyday lives, can

only be over-come by, as Jesus chal-lenges us –becoming the “light of the world” and “salt of the earth”!

How are we to comprehend thedark and evil in our world withoutthe faith that we can make a differ-ence? Do we really expect to stopthe horrible realities such as theshooting of innocent people in Ari-zona, U.S., and the trampling andloss of life in Jos, Nigeria, even loos-ing one of our brother Knights inthese senseless acts of violence? Wesee it repeated daily in our citiesand villages. Can we as individuals

really make a difference?“I am the Light of the World, he

who follows me shall not walk indarkness” says Our Lord. So if werefuse to “hide our light under a bushel basket”, and be an examplein our personal lives, in our familylives, and certainly in our lives asactive members of the Knights of St. John, we can be that clear andeffervescent light of example towhat can be, rather than what isin our troubled world!

The Season of Lent is also tradi-tionally seen as a somewhat dark

season of penance and sacrifice.However, it too can be a time of verypositive and enlightened prepara-tion for the greatest celebration of our Catholic Faith – Easter.

I, along with the members of theSupreme Board of Trustees, wish you and your family a BlessedLenten and Easter Season.

With the volume of e-mailI receive and must respond to on a daily basis, there just is no time foranything else. There is always muchwork to be done.

to use the wire transfer to our bank.I have provided all the necessary data for wire transfers to your Grand Presi-dent. See him for that information,if you don’t already have it.

Once again, it was like “pulling teeth” to get some Year End Reports/ Rosters in a timely manner. Althoughwe have repeatedly requested thesereports to be submitted by mid-Janu-ary, some commanderies are still fail-ing to do so, and in some cases, it ap-pears some local presidents and sec-retaries are either unaware of or areneglecting their responsibilities.Grand Presidents : You are the voiceof the Supreme to your Local Com-mandery. It is your responsibility tomake sure that yearly visitations aremade to your commanderies. That ishow you can determine how a com-mandery is functioning, if they areviable, if they conduct their meetingsproperly, and if they fully understandtheir responsibilities to the Supreme.

Most Grand Presidents are excep-tional men and devoted Knights. But,unfortunately, there are some outthere who, after achieving the distinc-

tion of General, have neglected to actfor the good of the Order by fulfilling the responsibilities of the office. And, in doing so, have made my du-ties as Supreme Secretary more diffi-cult.

As you read this, we are in themidst of Lent, preparing our heartsand minds for Holy Week and EasterSunday. When I was a child, I used to

On this seventh Sunday in or-dinary time: there is much said in

today’s sacred scripture passagesabout being “holy” and being calledto “holiness.” The First Reading states it with unequivocal words:“You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.” The holiness of God’s people is like drops of water inthe great ocean of divine holiness.Sacred scripture also tell us how thisholiness needs to be shown in ourdaily lives. It is above all in love to-wards our neighbor, with whom youlive shoulder to shoulder day afterday at home, in the office, on thestreet, on the freeway, in the super-

market. It is also in respecting one’sown spiritual identity: “God’s templeis holy, and you are that temple” (Sec-ond Reading). Holiness is shown inthe true wisdom that God grants tothose who love and seek him, and whoknow that “all belong to you, and youbelong to Christ, and Christ belongsto God” (Second Reading).

Of course the most excellent wayto holiness is love. Jesus Christ willsum up the whole law in love: In lovefor God and neighbor is found thewhole Law and the Prophets. How dowe achieve it? In the First Reading God gives two commandments thatare like two sides of a coin: a negativeprecept – “do not hate,” “do not beargrudges” against your neighbor – fol-lowed by a positive one – “you shalllove your neighbor as yourself,” thatis, I will consider the other as I con-sider myself, and I will love him as Ilove my own being, my own identity. Jesus in the Gospel goes beyond thisand tells us: “Be perfect (in love) as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Thisway of loving is not “human;” it hasto come down from heaven as a gift,

as a participation in something thatsurpasses us and ennobles us. Weneed to accept this gift with a grate-ful spirit that accompanies us day byday in our life. The Church teaches usthat to be holy, it’s not necessary todo extraordinary things. She tells usthat we can all be holy in the dailyduties of the family, work, rest, hu-man relationships, parish life, etc.

Greetings from Buffalo. It hasbeen a long cold winter here but weare looking forward to Spring. With

the change in season, let us remem-ber that Spring brings rebirth andnew life. This has been a very strange win-ter. The snow has been constantsince November and Spring cannotget here too soon. The December

Regimental meeting was canceledbecause of the bad weather, some-thing that is not done lightly. Butwe had to make a decision early inthe day so the necessary phone callscould be made. To that end, I haveregistered us with WGRZ TV fortheir closing reports. In the future,if we need to communicate to ourmembers, we can use Channel 2 toget the word out.

Congratulations to all the newlyelected and re-elected civil andmilitary officers who were installedat our Installation on January 23.Thanks to Bill Patterson and Com-mandery 377 for hosting us once

again. Thanks to Dennis Potozniak,my Adjutant, for setting it up andbring ing refreshments . Manythanks to Grand President, DonKirsch for coming and installing theofficers. And thanks to my wifeCindy, who helped get all the snacksand set everything up at the instal-lation.

Dear Brother Knights, it is withdeep sorrow and grief that I inform you o f the death of one of our mostactive and dedicated members, Col. Joseph C. Beinle in, Jr. At approxi-

mately 10:00 p.m. on November 1,2010 (All Saints Day) Joe’s son, ourCommandery Pres ident JoeBeinlein III, called me to say thathis dad had went into cardiac ar-rest and had died suddenly at age59. It was very unexpected that ourCommandery would be without an-other well known Brother Knight as Joe Jr. had last wrote te ll ing of thedeath of our former CommanderyPresident Ed Williams in the March2010 Knights Journal.

On Friday, November 5, 2010,

ten of our Brothers in either uni-form or sash and cap stood guardand participated in the KnightsMemorial Ritual. Saturday, Novem-ber 6. 2010, nine Brothers servedas Honor Guard for Joe Jr. as he waslaid to rest at St. Michael’s Cem-etery after Mass at St. Elizabeth of Hungary, which incidentally was thechurch where one of Joe’s daughterswas married earli er this year.

Joe jo ined the Knights on June1, 1966 and became active from thevery beginning. He held 14 differ-

ent positions of leadership in hismore than 44 years of membership.He was Kentucky Grand Treasurer1985 until his death in November2010; Kentucky Grand Sergeant at Arms 19 81 - 1985 ; 1st District of Kentucky Colonel 1983 until hisdeath in November 2010; 1st Dis-trict Jr. Major 1973 -1977; Com-mandery 2nd Vice President 2001 -2006; Commandery Treasurer 1980- 2000; Commandery Financial Sec-retary 1983 and 2006 unti l hisdeath in November 2010; Com-

mandery Trustee 1971 and 1972;Uniform Rank President 1972 -1976 and 1978 - 1980; UniformRank Vice-President 1969 - 1972and 1982 - 1984; Convention ClubPresident 1983 -1994; ConventionClub 2nd Vice President 1981-1983;Convention Club Secretary 1979 -1981; and Noble Degree Trustee1984 - 1987 and 1990 - 1992.

Jo e re ce iv ed the 4 th Degree in1970 and the Noble Degree in 1977.

He had attended every SupremeConvention since 1968, including the 2010 Convention in Midland,Michigan with his brother JimBeinlein, Brig . General GeorgeRitchie and Tony Tabler.

One of Joe’s passions about theKnights was the history of our orga-nization. Joe researched and com-

piled several detailed books on thehistory of Commandery No. 103, aswell as, the Kentucky Grand and theKentucky Temple Noble and Ex-alted Degree of the Holy Cross.These books are where most of theinformation for this article camefrom.

Joe was always ready and willing to use his time and talents to helppromote membership and to rewardour Brothers for their attendance atvarious functions. In July 1982 Joebegan a Service Pin Awards Presen-

tation to members with 25 years ormore of service in the organization.He designed the layout of a newDistrict Banner in September 1985.Recently he designed the layout of the ad that our Commandery placedin the church bulletin of our homeparish, St. Lawrence. Unfortunatelyhe did not get to see the ad in thebulletin as it was placed starting November 7, 2010, but I think hewould have been proud.

We could always count on Joe tobe present for any event that wewould be involved with, whether itbe a re l ig ious funct ion or a fundraiser. He worked our baconand sausage booth at St. Joseph’sChildren’s Home for over 40 yearsand other events for churches andrelated organizations. Anytime the

doors of our commandery hall wouldbe open, Joe would be there to dohis part, whether it was the dancesand Christmas baskets from many years ago to our annual Derby EveFish Fry or Card Party that he al sospent his time buying prizes for orfor the bi-monthly meetings thatwould be held.

Joe was many things with Com-mandery No. 103 father, brother,cousin and friend to many of us. Hewas a very integral part of our com-mandery and will be truly missed

for his leadership and his contribu-tions to the Knights, as well as, hisfriendship that meant so much tous. Please pray for Joe’s family andour Commandery as we grieve theloss of our Brother and try to con-tinue the many responsibilitiesthat he so willingly took on.

Committees where setup and final plans made for the GrandConvention to be held the weekendof March 26 and 27, 2011, hosted bySt. Rochus Commandery # 313 of Maria Stein, Ohio. A Second and Third

Degree initiation will be held at Masson Sunday March 27, 2011.Following the Board meeting the

annual Cincinnati Grand bowling tournament was held. Six teams par-ticipated in the tournament this year,and a “grand” time was had by all.Prizes where given and food wasserved at the hall of Commandery #313 afterward.

The team of Mike Kremer, ToddGagel, Ken Wolters, and Brian Gagelrepresenting Commandery # 313went by the team name of “Don’tCare”, did care by rolling a score of

2346 and took first place tournament.The team of Kevin Mescher, VernKremer, Ted Heitkamp, and KentSchaner also of Commandery # 313took second place with a score of 2315.Third place was won by Rich Bruns, Jack Hoying, Russ Seger, and JimMeyer of Commandery # 300 Ft.Loramie, Ohio with a score of 2299.Brian Gagel took the prize money forhigh game, scratch, with a 268 scoreand high series, scratch, with a 610series. John Garman won high gameplus handicap with score of 241 and

also high series plus handicap with a 665 series.

Several members from Command-ery 98 are once again gearing up forthe 18th annual Appalachia Project.This program consists of approxi-

mately 50 high school and college age youth from Christ the King and St.Catharine parishes and from severalhigh schools in the Columbus area.During the last week of June, these yout h alon g with an ex peri encedadult staff of around 20, journey toScioto County to do home repairs forthe needy in Southern Ohio. Roofing,siding, flooring, painting, bath andkitchen repairs, and cutting firewoodfor heating are only a few of the jobstaken on each year. Last year ten fami-lies benefitted from this program. All

supplies are either donated or pur-chased using money from a stock salewhere parishioners invest in the youth, fully knowing where and howtheir donations are being used.

This year several members of Com-mandery 98 were the guests of theLadies of Auxiliary #3 at the St.Mary’s Gala. The evening of food,drink, music, and a silent auction isalways very enjoyable. Last year over$30,000.00 was raised to help sup-port St. Mary’s Elementary School,Columbus, Ohio’s oldest CatholicSchool and the home parish of Com-

mandery #98 and the ladies of St.Elizabeth Auxiliary #3.

Feb 26 – Chicken Fry dinners -Monthly fundraiser held on a monthly basis except for June andDecember. This work is also done ona volunteer basis and is organized byone of our uniform rank members.

March 6 – Marion Local Young Farmers Organization annual break-fast at the Knight’s hall. Command-ery #313 supports the local farming organization by providing a facilityto host their annual appreciationbrunch.

Commadery #313 has imple-mented a new cash prize drawing for2011 to increase meeting attendance. A $25 pr ize wi ll be awarded to a member selected in a drawing, butthey must be present during themeeting. The pot will continue toincrease by $25 each meeting until

won by a member who is present atthe monthly meeting.

Captain Alorchie-Apetor thusbecomes the 11 th person to assumethe position of presidency since theestablishment of the Commanderyin 1983, taking over from Major Jo-seph Eddie Lamptey, who conductedthe induction ceremony in his ca-pacity as the Second vice Com-mander of the Third District Com-mandery.

In his maiden speech, the Wor-thy President thanked the mem-

“I want to congratulate all thosewho have been elected for the firsttime on to the Board of Trustees(BOT). The newcomers will quickly

find their feet so that together, wewill work for the common good of the Order. I have entire confidencein the goodwill of my BOT mem-bers in accepting the high and hon-orable office to which we have beenelected. I will only ask brothers toexercise a little of self-restraint inpointing out our faults and weak-nesses to us but do not hesitate todo that when the need arises,” henoted.

Captain Alorchie-Apetor on be-half of the BOT members promised

to discharge the duties entrusted tothem for the two-year term, saying that he and his team would counton the support of members, espe-cially past Presidents in order toaccomplish the task that has beenentrusted to them.

“Brothers, permit me further tosay that I shall exercise the powerswith which you have vested in mewith firmness and moderation sothat at the end of it all, we can give

thanks to the Almighty God for a good work done,” he maintained.

He added: “Our first and majortask to embark on is periodic visi-tation to our aged and sick brothersas well as wives of our deceasedbrothers. We shall also intensifymembership drive for both broth-ers and the cadets.”

In October Bishop Clark an-

nounced that, Our Lady of PerpetualHelp Church (the home of Com-mandery 40) would be closing. On January 2nd we served as escorts forthe last time and on January 9th thelast Mass was celebrated. Thisbrings to an end a long affiliationfor Commandery 40 with the churchas we were there for the laying of

the cornerstone for the 1st Churchin 1904 and the dedication in 1905.The Commandery was also presentfor the laying of the cornerstone forthe current Church in 1925 and

dedication in 1926. We are now partof the newly formed parish of St.Frances Xavier Cabrini which is theresult of the merging of five par-ishes into three.

Former Monroe County Sheriff Andy Meloni and member of Com-mandery 308 was honored with the W. Burton Richardson Lifetime Achievement Award during the sixthannual Human Services Worker of the Year awards luncheon. Severallocal human services workers alsowere recognized in other categories

at the event. According to organizers, Meloni

has been active for many years withsuch organizations as Camp GoodDays & Special Times, Compeer, SIS(Susta in Inspire Surv ive) , the American Heart Associat ion, Ital-ian Heritage Foundation, Sisters of St. Joseph, Stroke Support Group

Again this year the Supreme Command-ery is encouraging all of our local command-eries to participate in our annual “Month of March” promotion for the St. Vincent de PaulSociety. The fact that the St. Vincent de PaulSociety is the “Official Charity” of the Or-der may be old news, but the faces of the men,women and children it helps are alwayschanging and new. This is true now morethen ever given some of the economic hard-ships many people are experiencing and someof those may even be our own brotherknights. As in the past we ask that your com-mandery set aside the month of March and if needed the first part of April, to do that“little extra” or have a “ special promotion”

over and above that which you do through-out the year. This is also an excellent oppor-tunity to show the St. Vincent de Paul Soci-

in my Commandery for the

Knights of St . John, I ’ve been

reluctant to submit any report

or information for prin ting in

the Knights Supreme

Journal. In the beginning, I

reasoned that I didn’t know

who, when, or where to submit

information for the Journal.

After receiving detai ls regard-

ing this information, I’ve been

further reasoning that I had

nothing of interest of our Com-mandery that would justify a

submittal.

Only after a discussion with

a senior member within our

group did I understand that

information such as new mem-

bership, social activities, and

notes of a member’s death is

valuable at the Grand and Su- preme levels.

Therefore, I shall make a

consc ious effort to submit , on

a regular basis, a report based

on information from the

monthly newsletter I prepare

for our Commandery.

I also was able to speak with thisgentleman and assured him thatany and all information he hadabout the activities of his com-mandery was useful, printable, and

needed at the Grand and Supremelevels . Most important ly , i t i sneeded on the local level so all canbenefit from our labors. Knowing and understanding what is going on

and is successful in other command-eries may inspire and motivate oth-ers to try the same and thus our or-ganization grows.
