Key Terms

Kick start your students’ learning before you arrive with these useful key terms. Your students will explore some of these during their workshop.

EVAPORATION

Evaporation is when a liquid is heated and changes to a gas. The process of evaporation is one way in which sea salt was collected using salt pans.

OPEN SALT PANS

This was a traditional way to collect salt. Salt water would be heated in large shallow open pans with the water evaporating, leaving the salt crystals in the pan.

SALT MINING

Rock salt can be obtained from ancient underground salt mines, which still exist today. Mines can vary in size and depth, from 100 metres to a mile underground, and there are different techniques used to mine salt.

PRESERVATIVE

Salt has been used a preservative for centuries. It was used to preserve meat, fish, dairy products and other food. Salt draws the moisture out and prevents dangerous bacteria growing, prolonging the freshness of food.

ENDOTHERMIC REACTION

This is a chemical reaction that takes heat/energy from its surroundings.

STATES OF MATTER

Solids, liquids and gases are known as the three states of matter. These are subject to reversible changes such as evaporation, melting and freezing.

CHEMICAL FORMULA OF SALT

The chemical formula of salt is NaCl. The chemical name for salt is sodium chloride.

LIVERY COMPANY

Livery Companies began to form in the 12th Century to protect the standard and quality of a certain trade. There are currently 110 Livery Companies, with the Salters’ Company ranked ninth among the Great Twelve. Its ranking was due to its economic power when the Order of Precedence was set in 1515.

ART TIMES

The city of London was founded by the Romans and named Londinium. It even had an amphitheatre and a basilica.

The first ever Licence was granted to the Salters’

Company by King Richard II, allowing them to trade in salt.

By 1300, London was powerful and wealthy and by the middle of the 1500s, the population was about 120,000.

The Salters’ Company occupied its first Hall in Bread Street — they

used to sell salt to bakers.

After Boudicca’s revolt, the Romans built a huge wall around the City for protection. You can still visit a part of this wall in the garden at Salters’ Hall.

Tudor London had become the hub of trade and industry, with 200,000 people living there in 1600.

The Great Fire of London was estimated to have consumed

13,200 houses. It destroyed the fourth Salters’ Hall in

St Swithin’s Lane.

Roman soldiers often had their wages paid in salt

which is where the word salary comes from. ‘Sal’ is

Latin for salt.
