KSID: THE BEGINNING

Kerala State Institute of Design, was established in 2008, under the Department of Labour and Skills, Government of Kerala. In 2014 the institute was merged with KASE (Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence), the Skill Devel-opment Mission of the Government of Kerala.

With a small beginning of connect-ing to the artisan community and reviving the traditional crafts of the State, KSID soon spread it’s wings out to reach to a larger segment of the society, catering to various needs and demands of people; where design education also became a chief focus.

To realise this aim KSID was supported by the National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad, and it transformed from being only an institute catering to one segment to one that also included design edu-cation, where the educational segment and the students became the backbone of the institute. KSID commenced it’s first batch of students in 2015, and has success-fully been continuing to take in students every year.

MESSAGE FROM THEMANAGING DIRECTOR

lmagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embracesthe entire world . Creativity is think-ing up new things and innovation is doing new things. Application ofcreativity in the process of innova-tion is design. lt adds value to prod-ucts and services and brings ben-efits of technology to users. As design is gaining prominence and recognition as a professional domain, the young aspiring design-ers need to know the foundation and basics of design. lt is not only a spectrum of creativity but also

COMMUNICATION

DESIGNThe school of Interactive Communica-tion looks at the significance of social and technological tools of communi-cation, and through its academic programme plans to develop young professionals with scholarly knowl-edge on the phenomena of interactiv-ity. Basic design fundamentals are part and parcel of the Design programme and students are trained in areas such as colour, form, mate-rial, and communication graphics and so on. The PG Programme aims at imparting knowledge and further-ing research into the domain of designing interactive experiences in media, products and computer design applications. Students are exposed to and trained in both com-puter design applications and basic ‘hands on’ skills. The programme covers a wide range of communica-tion tools starting from information design to branding, interaction design, interface design, moving images and IT related interactive media.

The curriculum is designed in such a way that students are ready for direct employment in any IT firm as well as any design based firm. They can adapt to any employment situa-tion anywhere in India or abroad. The students can look for opportuni-ties in sectors like Graphic Design and Identity Design, Animation and Film, User Interface and Interaction Design and also work in IT based design studios. Their foundation training in basic design fundamen-tals enables them to weave together the modern technology, the tradi-tional ‘hands on’ skills and their basic innate creativity which is nurtured and enhanced during their two and-a half year experience at KSID. The School is collaborating with National and International Design Institutes in academics. It has also taken up training for profession-als and external consultancy work for various agencies.
