What is a byline in Kids Standard? It’s when you see your article and it say by you (your name is in print).

Everyone has something they like doing for fun. Writing for Kids Standard can actually be fun and rewarding.

Here are some points to keep in mind if you like to be one of our contributors.

Create a Plan. What to write about?

Taking a trip to Library or

talking to other kids in school can help generate a topic for your plan and give you an idea about what you want to end up.

Set Yourself a Time and a Time Limit

It’s important to give yourself both a day and time to begin, a time to finish, and the time to do this. I usually say between 20 minutes per day till you are finished, because otherwise your brain will get bored of this and will do everything it can to make you stop and concentrate otherwise you

will become bored and easily distracted. That’s the way the brain works.

Eliminate the Distractions

Keeping that in mind, don’t feed your brain anything else than the material in front of you that you are using to write with and any research.

Sit Down and Start Doing It

Once you decide to write, begin to write. You may even end up doing more than you had planned, and you will

feel immensely pleased with yourself.

So What If it’s not Good Enough?

We are not going to judge you, this is a learning experience.

Picasso didn’t paint a masterpiece overnight. He would first sketch some ideas, and, after weeks of work, he came up with a crazy looking piece that soon became a masterpiece.

Don’t Push It Too Much

Don’t force yourself to write,

but keep that 20 minutes a day to yourself. Instead, you can take the time to reread what you wrote or come up with more point forms for your plan if the words do not come that day.

Thinking ahead sometimes can motivate you for the future. For example, one of the kids who wrote in our very first issue commented that she can use this experience in her resume and portfolio later on when she is applying for college!!

So now that you have the tools, how long will it be before you see your byline? We want it in our next issue, do you?

The Watergate scandal was huge political scandal at the time. It started when a security guard, in Alexandria, VA, discovered recording tapes.

These tapes had recordings of the democrat comity’s plan to win the election of 1972. Nixon allegedly used this info to win that election. There were 7 men arrested, Nixon was not. Yet, he still resigned. His successor was Gerald Ford.

Delaware was the 1st state in the Union; it became a state in 1787.

The official state flag of Delaware was adopted on July 4, 1913. The flag has a blue field that features a yellow or orange diamond with the state’s seal.

On the seal, a soldier (with a rifle) and a farmer

(with a hoe) look at each other across scrollwork that encloses an ox, a sheaf of wheat, and an ear of corn. Under this is a white ribbon reading, “LIBERTY AND INDEPENDENCE.”

Above is a sailing ship (representing commerce). Below the seal is the date December 7, 1787, the date that Delaware ratified the United States Constitution (it was the first colony to do so).

Major civil rights movements went on through the 1960’s and 1970. Woman’s rights activist performed public protests and riots. Some burned their cloths. Most demanded the same pay as men. By the end, woman had a different role in society. Another movement was on segregation.

Until 1975 segregation was permitted. After the ban on segregation, some people boycotted the ban. Some didn’t let their children attend school with African Americans. Even, some children attacked African Americans at school.

George Washington (17321799) was the first President of the United States of America. He served as President from April 30, 1789, until March 4, 1797 (two terms). His VicePresident was John Adams (17351826), who was later voted the second President of the USA.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia Washington’s father died when George was 11 years old. He had very little formal schooling, but taught himself to be an expert woodsman, surveyor (a person who determines the boundaries and area of tracts of land), and mapmaker. Washington grew to be over 6 feet tall this was very rare in Colonial times.

As a young man, Washington joined the Virginia militia. He and six men traveled 500 miles north to the shores of Lake Erie to deliver a message to the French the French were ordered to stop settling land that was claimed by the British. This land dispute led to a battle in which Washington and 160 men lost to the French; this was the beginning of the French and Indian War (the British and the Colonists fought the French and some Indian tribes). After many heroic battles, Washington

became a colonel and the leader of Virginia’s militia. The British eventually won the French and Indian War.

Washington married Martha Custis in 1759; she was a rich widow who had two children, Martha “Patsy” and John “Jacky.” Their home in Virginia was called Mt. Vernon. George and Martha did not have children together.

In 1758, Washington was elected to the House of Burgesses in Virginia

In order to pay for the expensive French and Indian War, the British taxed the Colonists (the Stamp Tax), angering them. In Boston, the Colonists revolted, dumping

precious tea into Boston Harbor (this event is called the Boston Tea Party).

In 1775, Washington was chosen as the Commander in Chief of the Colonial Army. In 1776, the Colonists declared their independence from the British. General Washington led ragtag Patriot troops who were poorly trained, barely paid, badly equipped, and outnumbered by the British. Patriot women, like Molly “Pitcher,” often helped on the battlefields, carrying pitchers of water to cool down the cannons so they could be re-fired, and also nursing the wounded.

Due to the brilliant planning of George Washington and some help from the French late in the War, the British were defeated in 1781 after many bloody battles. The Americans were now independent of the British.

1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, PA during which the US Constitution was written.

The US Constitution outlined a representative government with checks and balances among three branches of government : the Executive (the President), the Legislative Branch (law makers), and the Judicial Branch (judges and courts). The Constitution was ratified in 1788 -- it went into effect in 1789. The next step was to set up this new, revolutionary form of government.

Washington was unanimously elected President of the United States of America by electors in early 1789 and again in 1792. Both votes were unanimous. John Adams was his vicepresident. Washington’s first inauguration took place in New York City, New York (which was the first capital of the USA, from 1789 to 1790).

Washington’s second inauguration took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (it was the capital from 1790 to 1800). Washington refused a third Presidential term, saying in his farewell speech that a longer rule would give one man too much power.

20th Century classical music was usually inharmonic. It also had a broad sound an subgenre. Most music’s theme come from the culture, fads, and politics of the time period. This is called avantgarde, example are the Beatles and Yes.

This music was found worldwide in the 20th

Century. Early in the 20th Century, Romantic music was popular. Neoclassical music, also, was popular at the time.

In the earlymid Century music was leading to futuristic music. Overall, the early 20th century was, at first, romantic, leading to more electronic instruments then ever before. The electric guitar and the keyboard are 2 examples.

ScienceBy Brian T.

Global Warming has become an extreme issue. Global warming is the effect of to much green house gases being released into the atmosphere. When in the atmosphere, the green house gases let the suns rays in but not out. Some of these green house gases are CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide. On average, 7.5 billion metric tons of green house gas is released into the atmosphere each year! That’s like 750,000,000 elephants!

Global warming is hitting hard in the north and south. Both the north and the south ice caps are malting. The effects are tremendous. Scientists predict that the world water level will rise more then 2 feet. And up in the north f the year ice is gone now due to increased temperature. In Canada and parts of the U.S. people have reported groups of polar bears digging through garbage cans looking for food.

Just off the shore of Queensland Australia is the biggest coral reef in the world. THE GREAT BARRIER REEF! The great barrier is

actually made up of 2,900 individual reefs stretching an astonishing 133,000 sq miles! Recently in the past 2030 years, the Great Barrier Reef

has begun to dye and global warming is the cause. Since CO2 is now in the air, it is also in the oceans. The increased amount of CO2 in the water is turning the water more acidic therefore bleaching and killing the corals.

The 2 main contributors to global warming are, 1. Humans. and 2. Cows!

Humans contribute to about 85% of global warming. One of the main ways is by burning gas. Every single car, truck and lawn mower produces CO2 emissions. There are about 600 million cars and trucks in the world and about 100 million lawn mowers in the world. All together that’s over 700 million CO2 emitting vehicles.

A good way to reduce emissions is to buy a hybrid. A hybrid is a car that uses gas and another energy source like electricity stored in a big battery. Therefore you do not use as much gas, which means less CO2 emissions. Plus, since you use less gas, it saves you more money at the pump!

Another way that we are contributing to global warming is from deforestation. You may be wondering how deforestation would contribute to global warming, here’s how. When you breath in air, your body takes only the oxygen from the air and gives the rest back as CO2. Then plants take in the air and use the CO2, and give the rest back as oxygen. When we cut down a lot of trees, more CO2 goes in to the atmosphere because there are fewer trees and plants to take it in.

Cows are nowhere close to humans but come in second place contributing to 8% of global warming. Cows burps contain high amounts of methane. Methane is another green house gas that has 21 times the power of CO2 meaning it can hold 21 times more the amount of the suns rays, than CO2.

The one good part about it though is that it lasts for only 1012 years. CO2 on the other hand can live for up to 500 years!

Polar Bears are large, meateating bears who are welladapted for life in their frozen Arctic environment. They are the largest Carnivore in Earth. They are powerful swimmers who hunt seals in the water. Polar bears can run in bursts up to 25 mph.

Anatomy: Polar Bears are up to 10 feet long and weigh about 1,700 pounds; males are bigger than females. Polar bears have a small head, powerful jaws, and a black nose and tongue. They have a strong sense of smell. They have 42 teeth; the tail is small and flat. They have wide front paws with slightly webbed toes that help them swim. These bears paddle with their front feet and steer with the hind feet.

Fur and Skin: Polar Bears have two types of fur. They have thick, woolly fur close

to the skin that keeps them warm. They also have hollow guard hairs that stick up and protect the bears from getting

wet. These guard hairs are like drinking straws and are clearcolored. The whitelooking coat camouflages

them well in the snow and ice. Under the fur, Polar Bears have black skin. They also have a thick layer of fat (up to

4 inches thick) under the skin that helps keep them warm.

Habitat and Range: Polar Bears live in icy Arctic areas of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. They spend much of their time swimming in frigid seas.

Diet: Polar Bears are carnivores, who frequently hunt and catch their prey in the water, often many miles from land. They are fierce predators who eat mostly seals (and some walruses and other marine mammals). A polar bear’s stomach can hold up to 150 pounds. Polar bears don’t drink water.

Reproduction: When pregnant, females build snow dens in which they spend the winter; they usually give birth to twin cubs. Male polar bears are active all year.

They are endangered species because of the global warming.

As water flows in rivers, it picks up small amounts of mineral salts from the rocks and soil of the river beds. This slightly salty water flows into the oceans and seas. The water in the oceans only leaves by evaporating, but the salt remains dissolved in the ocean and it does not evaporate. So the remaining water gets saltier and saltier as time passes.

The salt content of ocean water varies. The oceans and seas contain roughly 5 x 10 16

tons of salts. One cubic foot of average sea water contains 2.2 pounds of salt.

The oceans are about 3.5% salts by weight. The salt content is generally reported in terms of parts per thousand, the number of pounds of salt per 1,000 pounds of water; the average ocean salt content is 35‰.

The saltiest water is in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf, which have a salt content is very high evaporation rates. The less salty seas are in the Polar Regions, where both melting polar ice and a lot of rain dilute the salt content.

Why are the oceans salty?

The Black Sea is the world’s most isolated sea, connected to the oceans via the Mediterranean Sea through the Bosphorus, Dardanelle and Gibraltar straits, and linked with the Sea of Azov in the northeast through the Kerch Strait. The Black Sea is the world largest water body containing hydrogen sulfide. This is because it has an inflow of salty Mediterranean sea water in the deep layers and an inflow of river water on the top. So the sea cannot even be mixed by wind.

The area of the Black Sea is six times larger than its surface with the Danube being its main branch.

The Black Sea guard charge is responsible for the supervision of the Black Sea.

The unique ecosystem of the NorthWestern Shelf of the Black Sea is loaded by loads of nutrients and dangerous

substances from the coastal countries and the rivers.

The Black Sea is almost completely cut off from the world’s other seas and ocean. The deepest waters of the Black Sea extend to depths of well over 5 miles.

Pollution inputs and other factors have totally changed Black Sea ecosystems beginning around 1960, and seriously threatening to our use of the sea for fishing and recreation.

In addition to nutrient pollution, other pressures on the Black Sea ecosystems include organic pesticides, heavy metals, incidental and operational spills from oil vessels and ports, overfishing and invasions of exotic species.

What is the future of the Black Sea?

Nitrogen inputs into the Black Sea have been reduced recently, but are still higher as

those observed during the 1960s; current phosphate inputs appear to be roughly the same as in the 1960s.

According to information from the Black Sea

Commission efforts to reduce discharges from 49 high priority pollution sources, pollution from insufficiently treated waste water and in the air in all the Black Sea

coastal states are beginning to bear fruit, since fewer and less intense algal blooms are now being recorded in the sea, while total fish catches have increased.

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization that has made a commitment to feed the starving children of the world. The method is this: children and adults handpack meals

formulated specially for starving children, and ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world. This group spends most of its time packing special food for kids in poor countries. The food is a combination of rice; soy, chicken flavored vitamins and minerals, and dehydrated vegetables.

This organization also provides a teambuilding environment where people of all ages can come together for a common cause: packing nutritious, lifesaving meals for starving children. I was one person who helped. On Sunday, March 21st, my family and I headed to Vineyard Church in Baldwinsville. Our first task

was to become educated about the organization. We watched a video on how this program helps kids. I was shocked to discover that there are kids in the world that will eat dirt to stop the hunger pains.

Our next step was to get packing. I was given a hairnet and plastic gloves. I was in charge of dumping the soy

into the bags. We did the same thing for two hours, but even though my arm hurt, I knew I was saving lives. I kept thinking about the video and how fortunate I am to have food. I felt really useful.

The FMSC foundation is very helpful to people all over the world. They have helped countries like Haiti, El Salvador, and North Korea. One story tells that an unhealthy 10 yearold weighed only 17 lbs. After a few months of eating FMSC food, he weighed 70 lbs. This foundation is a great way to volunteer. Also, it will give you a deep satisfaction to be part of something so meaningful. Check out the website for more information on ways you can help: www.fmsc.org.

Well, those really aren’t butterflies in there. “Butterflies in the stomach” is a way of describing those nervous, fluttery feelings you might get before a test or an important game. An imaginative writer created

the phrase to describe the feeling, and people have been using it ever since.

These tummy flutters are normal and happen to many people, even grownups. Some people believe having a few butterflies might even help you perform better by keeping you on your toes.

In many countries, children are dying of starvation. Many people seem to not care, or do not know how to help out, but one group does. It is called “Feed my Starving Children.”

History

Brian T8TH GradeThe battle of new Orleans was a major victory for the Americans. Even though it was after the war, the British thought they could go walking into the United states and claim what they wanted. The British wanted New Orleans back, so they decided to go and claim it not long after a treaty was signed between the United states and Great Britain. When the people in New Orleans found out about

this, they turned to Andrew Jackson for help. When Jackson arrived in the late fall of 1814, he brought his own army along to help. He also recruited freed African American slaves and the militia of New Orleans to help fight. When the British arrived on December 23rd, two American officers came running to Jackson to give him the news. That night, Jackson launched a surprise attack on the British camp. After the attack, the British were so

surprised that they delayed their attack plans giving the American army time to recreate. Jackson retreated 3 miles to the Chalmette plantation on the banks of the Rodriguez canal which was basically a big ditch. Here, Jackson’s men constructed a 3/5 mile long rampart. It was the perfect position too because they had the rampart up front, the Mississippi river to the right and the cypress swamp to their left. As General Pakenham prepared

to attack, the Americans dug trenches and settled into their surroundings. On December 28th, the British tried to break through the American defenses but were turned back with the help of a ship called the Louisiana stationed to the right of the troops. Four days later, the British tried to bombard the Americans with their artillery but once again were turned back. On January 4th , 1815, the British received a fresh supply of troops which greatly increased

their chance of success. General Pakenham decided to cross the Mississippi river and overwhelm the thin line of defense. Their plan was simple. They would construct ladders from bundled sticks to get past the ramparts. There was only one problem however. The British had forgotten to bring their ladders so an easy task of climbing a ladder got a whole lot harder. The British had two forces that were to meet up and overwhelm the Americans but the secondary force on the west side of the Mississippi was delayed so the main force had to attack without them to take advantage of the early morning fog. As the British army of more than 10,000 walked across, the badly out numbered U.S. rag tag army were crammed behind narrow fortifications prepared to fight.. Even though the Americans were outnumber 4,000 to 10,000, the British made easy targets marching across a quarter mile of open ground wearing bright suits, and marching in perfect rhythm like “civilized” men. When the firing started, the British army started falling like dominoes. The two most senior British Generals were killed along with general Pakenham. Before he died he told his successor not to retreat. The man was obviously not a lunatic like Pakenham and gave the order to retreat. In the end, the Americans killed were 8 and 13 wounded; The British on the other hand had well over 2,000 killed or wounded and more than 100 captured.

Each year, an average of 42 million children play sports, approximately 5060% of these children will quit sports by age 12; blaming lack of playing time, a dislike of the coach, too much competition and pressure, too many other activities to participate in and it is no longer fun.

i9 Sports®, national provider of youth sports leagues and camps, is changing the game of youth sports and developing a fanatical following by focusing on fun and fundamentals. Emphasizing good sportsmanship instead of the score, every week the focus is on a new skill that will help players become successful both on and off the field. A weekly sportsmanship award is given to a deserving player on each team for skills such as listening, fair play and best effort.

Certified coaches ensure the focus is on the i9 Sports Core Principles – fun, safety, good

sportsmanship, everybody plays and everybody wins. There are absolutely no tryouts or drafts. Each child receives equal playing time and has the opportunity to play every position. A child who has never had a chance to play key positions in other leagues will get that chance in an i9 Sports league.

“You should see the look on a kid’s face when you tell them they get to play quarterback,” says Chris Novak i9 Sports Program Director. “It’s amazing what it does for their selfesteem.”

Kevin Maas, father and coach in Madison Heights, says the i9 Sports philosophy has been valuable to his son. “He has learned over the past two seasons with i9 Sports how to be a sportsman, how to listen attentively to coaches, and how to have fun while playing a game. We talk to the kids, we high five them in every circumstance, we

cheer for our fellow teammates and we let the other team know when they make good plays. It is very exciting to know that those teachings and values show up in other circumstances, outside of i9 Sports, and that everything the league represents makes an impact for the good.”

Parents enjoy complete convenience. Games are typically Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons, with practices sche duled a half hour before the game. The onestopshop website offers easy registration, uptodate schedules, scores, standings, photos and news. Also, every effort is made to accommodate special requests to play with siblings, friends or coaches.

Novak says parents are usually very appreciative of the convenience of his i9 Sports leagues. “I had a busy mother of three tell me that only going to the field once a week has

given her more family time. It can be hard to get multiple kids to multiple practices and games throughout the week,” he said. “And they don’t have to volunteer at the concession stand, so they get to watch their kids play.”

“Participation in team sports builds character, increases self esteem and provides development of skills that will help them throughout their whole life,” said Novak. “We want to make the i9 Sports Experience enjoyable for the whole family, so that child will continue to be involved in sports.”

i9 Sports is helping children succeed in life through sports. With more than 400,000 members since 2004, i9 Sports is the premier provider of youth sports leagues across the country, offering flag football, basketball, soccer, cheerleading and more for children aged 314. The focus of an i9 Sports league is on children having fun and learning to play, all while learning the value of

good sportsmanship. There are no tryouts, drafts, or fundraisers, and i9 Sports encourages equal playing time for each child, which helps to increase selfesteem. All instructors undergo a thorough background check and certification process. The i9 Sports Experience focuses on providing families the most wellorganized, safe and convenient youth sports programs available.

Upcoming Programs in Your AreaComing this spring, i9

Sports will be offering outdoor flag football, soccer, and cheerleading leagues in the East Oakland County Area for kids between the ages of 314.

In the summer, i9 will be hosting an instructional lacrosse league with the most experienced coaches around Oakland County. Please visit the website for more information: www.i9sports.com

These are the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, They are totally amazing.

1The Aurora Borealis, also known as the

Northern or Southern Lights, are naturally occurring lights that create amazing displays in the sky. They are caused by solar flares hitting the Earth’s atmosphere. Depending on the element in the sky, the lights can

appear as blue, red, purple, and most commonly green. A spectacular sight is when the aurora appears as waves across the sky; it is almost as if the lights are dancing. The best way to see the aurora or northern lights is by traveling to the Northern or Southern Hemisphere’s. The chances of experiencing the northern lights will increase as you approach the poles. On some rare occasions, you can find an aurora in northern Europe, and in New Zealand.

Unfortunately, you cannot predict when the lights will appear, but it is worth the effort when you find yourself

underneath them as they dance across the sky.

2The Grand Canyon is a massive gorge located

in the state of Arizona in the United States, and was created by the Colorado River. Although not the steepest or the longest canyon in the world, the Grand Canyon is recognized as a natural wonder because of the overall scale and size combined with the beautifully colored landscape. The canyon offers a variety of lookouts and experiences that provide visitors with a view that cannot be matched.

The most spectacular view of the canyon occurs from the Toroweap Overlook. Visiting the Grand Canyon is an experience in and of itself. Common experience is exploring the canyon on the back of a mule. This provides a unique experience of the canyon while allowing the mule to carry the load. The floor of the canyon can also be explored by taking a white water rafting trip. There are a variety of trips offered depending on the type of experience someone wants. If you really want to explore the Grand Canyon, don’t plan a day trip. One could easily

consume a week discovering and exploring the canyon.

3Paricutin is a cinder cone volcano in Michoacán,

As you move from the top of the falls towards the foot path along the gorge, there is a lookout that delivers a spectacular rainbow as you look down the chasm of the gorge.

5The Great Barrier Reef is the world’ s largest natural

creation, and the largest coral reef. The Great Barrier Reef is off the coast of northeastern Australia. The reef is so big that you can see it from

space! As the largest coral reef in the world, the Great Barrier Reef includes over 900 islands, over 2,900 separate reefs, and supports one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. 7The Harbor of Rio de Janeiro Spectacular

bay eroded by the Atlantic ocean and surrounded by

majestic mountains that offer many different perspectives of the harbor, which is located in Brazil and was created by erosion from the Atlantic Ocean. The Harbor is surrounded by gorgeous mountains that include Sugar Loaf at 1,296 feet (395 m), Corcovado Peak at 2,310 feet (704 m), and the hills of Tijuca at 3,350 feet (1021 m). April fool’s Day Alexis Z6TH GradeApril Fool’s Day is on April 1st. We do not know the exact origin of this day. It has a number of possible origins, and may have evolved from any number of them. Some of the origins date back to the days of the Roman Empire. Traditionally, April Fool’s Day is an opportunity for playing jokes or tricks on one another. The stranger and the more absurd the better it is. The challenge is to carry out a trick that is believable, if only for a little while. Tricks are most successful if played earlier in the day before a person is wise to what is going on. Any tricks or jokes must be harmless and fun. They must not be dangerous or hurt anyone’s feelings. Give your jokes some thought before carrying them out, then, have fun! Happy April Fool’s Day !

computer “bugs” Kaitlin F 7th GradeWhy is it called “bug” in the computer? Here is the story behind it: the first all purpose computers, used so much electricity that every time it was turned on, the lights in town dimmed. Early comput-ers were huge, with many wires, connections, and hard-ware inside them. When they malfunctioned, programmers generally searched their codes to see what error was causing the problem. The story is told that once, after an intensive search for the error, the puzzle was solved: the culprit was a dead moth found inside the computer. Since then, the slang word for a code error has been “bug.”

Percy Jackson is always having trouble staying at one school. He gets kicked out of school, time after time. In his current school, his prealgebra teacher is after him, literally! Percy had to vaporize the teacher so she wouldn’t kill him. After that commotion, he went to a camp called “Camp HalfBlood.” This camp contains demigods. Demigods are people that are half human, half god. All of the demigods have a mortal

human as a parent, and an immortal Greek god as a parent. While there, Percy has a quest to achieve. He has to find and then acquire Zeus’s master bolt. The master bolt is Zeus’s most destructive weapon. Zeus thinks that Poseidon, Percy’s dad, stole the lightning bolt, even though another god, named Hades, secretly stole it. So now the gods’ home, Olympus, is in utter chaos, and Percy has to find the master bolt before Zeus starts showing his true power. Watch The Lighting Thief and see the unusual

creatures that Percy has to defeat, and also see the amazing adventure that Percy has to go through.

Is your friend’s life worth to risk your own life for? Are you going to followthrough with something or are you just going to quit when the going gets tough? These questions are exactly what need to be faced in the eyes of Horace and Halt.

Horace, a knight in training, and Halt, a master ranger, are on a quest to look for a dear friend named Will. Will got lost while on a mission with the king’s daughter, Evanlyn. The two of them got captured by Skandians, a group of Vikings.

Will and Evanlyn were sent to a cruel island named Skorghijl. The weather on

Skorghijl was cruel, and Will and Evanlyn had to do backbreaking work, day after day for the Skandians.

In the mean time, Horace and Halt were coming for Will. The two of them had it hard, though. The reason for that was because they had to travel through Celtica.

Celtica was an unforgiving place full of thugs and evil warlords that control people through fear. Every time that Horace and Halt crossed a bridge, a weak knight would say that they had to pay a fee to pass. These knights in Celtica were mere thugs, though, collecting money from weak and helpless people off the street. So every time Horace passed a knight, he would just knock him out with the hilt of his sword. Apparently, after a while, Horace got really popular among Celtic warlords.

One of those warlords was named Deparnieux. He took

Halt and Horace prisoner. While there, Halt noticed

how Deparnieux ruled by fear, like most warlords do. He got tired of these warlords bossing people around, so he challenged Deparnieux to a duel. Halt easily beat his enemy with his favoured weapon, the longbow.

Over at Skorghijl, life was not getting better. Jarl Erak, the leader of the group of Skandians that captured Will and Evanlyn, caught the two of them trying to escape.

The day after they tried to escape, the whole crew (with Evanlyn and Will) got to go home to capital city of Skandia, Hallasholm. When they got there, Will and Evanlyn were sold as slaves.

After a few days, Will almost died from the cold, lifedrenching work of working the fields for twenty hours straight, every other day. Jarl Erak felt bad for the young lad, so he devised for a plan for him and Evanlyn to escape. This is mainly on what the story is about.

This book is geared toward 7th – 11th graders (people that have a high reading level). This is due to the fact of the bizarre word choice, and the actionbased plot of the story. I highly recommend this book to anybody who has a passion for reading and a rich vocabulary. This book has a climax at mostly every part in the story, and it is hard to put it down after you read even one chapter of this epic series. I would personally rate this book, a 4 out of 4!!!

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is about a kid named Greg Heffley. Greg gets himself in a lot of trouble in these books. He has a lot of crazy adventures, too. For example, one day his friend Rowley ate a moldy piece of cheese from the ground. Also, one time Rowley slept over at Greg’s house. They watched a really scary movie, and because they were so scared, they ended up sleeping in a shower together. This series is full

of funny stories like these. I recommend reading this series. There are four books in all right now. There is also a DoItYourself Book. The author is in the process of making a 5th book, too. So don’t just wait around here, get yourself a copy of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

Obesity is a complex issue involving education, technology, and everyday society. Obesity in America has even more factors. In the U.S. there are many fastfood restaurants and large portion sizes. Yet, it is the individual’s responsibility for a healthy weight.

How has America become so obese?

As technology advanced, the need for manual labour decreased. There are cars, remotes, and artificial foods. A good example of an

artificial food is the chicken patty, which is a sponge, made of chemicals, absorbed with chicken juice.

The growth and spread of fast food companies are also partially to blame. As the American life becomes busier, it becomes more convenient to eat, unhealthy, fast food. This is the case for most Americans, who eat fast food once or more a week.

Why is U.S. society a major factor of the obesity of Americans?

Education, advertisements, fast food, and customs are

all factors within American society that cause obesity.

Fast food companies have become a way of life for most American’s. There advertisements have made toddlers fall in love with fast food. Advertisements go far beyond fast food restaurants, “junk food” companies, advertise a lot as well. Some region’s

have costumes that can make the population obese. For example; the 3 most obese states Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee fry much of their foods.

But the biggest part of society that can cause obesity is education. Some schools don’t teach kids about nutrition. And most schools don’t have healthy

launch menus. This might not seem important, but kids are the world’s future.

Most people in America blame fast food companies for obesity. They are only one major factor, education, technology, and societies are huge factors as well. Ultimately, it is the person’s responsibility to have and maintain a healthy weight.

The functions of the brain

The human brain is a complex organ that allows us to think, move, feel, see, hear, taste, and smell. It controls our body, receives information, analyses information, and stores information (our memories).

The brain produces electrical signals, which, together with chemical reactions, let the parts of the body communicate. Nerves send these signals throughout the body.

Size of the human brain

The average human brain weighs about 3 pounds . At birth, the human brain weighs less than a pound. As a child grows, the number of cell

remains relatively stable, but the cells grow in size and the number of connections increases. The human brain reaches its full size at about 6 years of age.

Composition of the brain

The brain consists of gray matter (40%) and white matter (60%) contained within the skull. Brain cells include

neurons and glial cells. The brain has three main parts: the cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the brain stem (medulla).

Nourishment of the brain

Although the brain is only 2% of the body’s weight, it uses 20% of the oxygen supply and gets 20% of the blood flow. Blood vessels (arteries, capillaries, and veins) supply the brain with oxygen and nourishment, and take away wastes. If brain cells do not get oxygen for 3 to 5 minutes, they begin to die.

Cerebro spinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain.

The nervous system

The nerves that connect the Central Nervous System to the rest of the body are called the peripheral nervous system.

The autonomic nervous system controls our life support systems that we don’t consciously control, like breathing, digesting food, blood circulation, etc.

Protection

The cells of the nervous system are quite fragile and need extensive protection from being crushed, being infected by disease organisms, and other harm. The brain and spinal cord are covered by a tough, translucent membrane, called the dura matter. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear, watery liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, and is also found throughout the ventricle (brain cavities and tunnels). CSF cushions the brain and spinal cord from jolts.

The cranium (the top of the skull) surrounds and protects the brain. The spinal cord is surrounded by vertebrae (hollow spinal bones). Also, some muscles serve to pad and support the spine.

More subtly, the bloodbrain barrier protects the brain from chemical intrusion from the rest of the body. Blood flowing into the brain is filtered so that many harmful chemicals cannot enter the brain.

Yellow by: Sophie G. (5th grade)

Yellow feels like the soft flower petals from a yellow rose that just bloomed from the ground.

Yellow sounds like the birds chirping from happiness of its new born chicks.

Yellow looks like the sun blazing down at the sea showing you the wonderful creatures that lie on the sea floor.

Yellow smells like a lemon freshly picked then squeezed into lemonade.

Yellow tastes like a cup of shaved ice cool on my tongue after a nice and fun swim.

Thank you for taking the time to read our newspaper. We all know how busy life can be. Our modern world is constantly changing and for parents life has become quite the balancing act. Many parents are working full time jobs in addition to raising a family. We recognize that the ultimate goal of parents is to provide the best they can for their children. We are aware that the number one priority for parents is to raise their children within the healthiest and safest environment they can provide. We all know that education is key to the success of our kids and our communities. That is why we created Kids Standard. Our vision is to empower children by giving them a medium to communicate their opinions and to share and gain knowledge. It is a place where kids feel respected and appreciated by their peers and adults alike. This newspaper gives children their own space, their own place; to create and communicate, to care and share, to know and to grow; and to recognize how special they truly are.

Kids Standard is a new, one of a kind publication, created by and for kids. Children are the primary authors. Our first free issue was published November of 2009 in Central New York. Our vision of giving a voice to our children was received with great reviews. Children, parents and educators alike, all agreed

that this newspaper is the perfect media for our kids to learn and grow. What a way to express, create, empower and, expand their horizons while travelling through life; learning exceptional skills along the way. This paper is for the children but we need you as well. We would like to encourage parents, educators and all of you in the community to join us in celebrating our children with the publication of Kids Standard, the newspaper that they help to create. We hope that you are as excited as we are to expand our publication to Oakland County, Michigan. We welcome you all to be a part of the success of Kids Standard. We need your support to succeed.

This page is for you! We would like to invite and encourage parents and professionals to participate in our newspaper. It is with us all working together as a team that we can help to influence our children in a positive way. We believe that although parents play the primary role, educators and professionals’ also need to be involved. We can all help our kids grow to their fullest potential. As the saying goes “It takes a village to raise a child”, your community is that village. Let us all become involved to seek the best future for our children and our society as a whole. It is up to us all to educate and motivate our kids to be the best they can be. Although Kids Standard is for the most part printed for the children we recognize that we need your involvement as well. Please join us by contributing your skills and knowledge; your advice and suggestions, your ideas and thoughts; we need you to help kids standard grow and succeed in your community.
