Jay Bee Auto basketball team’s dynasty is still alive and well
Many smaller to mid-size communities have a recreational team in a particular sport that flat-out dominates. Kenosha has had its share of teams of that stature in various sports, but arguably none is as potent as the Jay Bee Auto men’s basketball team.
How good are these guys? Well, in the confines of Kenosha, they have been asked to step down from the Kenosha City Basketball League because of their high level of play. Other teams stated they would forfeit any games scheduled against the basketball dynasty.
You can’t really blame local teams. After all, Jay Bee went 180-0 (that’s right, one hundred and eighty) in city league play from 1995-2003. The team re-entered the hometown circuit in 2005 and easily reclaimed its crown with an unblemished 20-0 record.
With largely homegrown talent, the team has traveled throughout the country looking for suitable competition. Still, the dominance continued. The resume includes 11 first-place trophies won in 2010. This year, the team has eight pieces of first-place hardware in its corpulent case of trophies, includ-ing a championship earned at the Kentucky Pro-Am.
“The funny thing about this is that it started as a pure rec team back in 1994 with people just look-ing for something to do,” recalled
Tony Moore, who has been the coach and a player with Jay Bee since 1995. “People kept asking me about it and it just took off. I never thought it would turn out like this.”
Tournment of Stars Last month, the team partici-
pated in the Tournament of Stars event and competed well. Jay Bee’s only tourney losses were to a team put together by Penny Hardaway, who played in the NBA from 1993-2008, and a triple-overtime setback against a team out of Texas that was loaded with professional players who compete overseas and in other professional leagues.
This wasn’t the first brush with NBA players for the local squad. For-mer Kenosha St. Joseph’s and NBA star Nick Van Exel, now the Player De-velopment Instructor with the Atlanta Hawks, and three-time NBA champion Sam Cassell invited Jay Bee players to join them for a tournament.
“We have had pro players call and ask if we can bring a team,” said Moore. “Van Exel and Cassell invited us to come and help them win a tournament they were having a hard time winning.”
Moore said the fact his team has rubbed shoulders with NBA players should not be surprising to people involved in the sports scene in southeastern Wisconsin.
“There is way, way more talent in Racine and Kenosha than people give us credit for,” he explained. “We have the same type of good players as they have in the big cities. We want to showcase that talent.”
Some Jay Bee players are former college players, while some never played college ball because they

didn’t have the proper contacts. Some players are current collegians who want to play at a high level and sharpen their game. Former UW-Parkside stars Kyle Clark (St. Joseph’s) and LaVontay Fender-son (Racine St. Catherine’s) came through Jay Bee. Fenderson has had NBA looks and is currently weighing overseas offers. “Both were awesome talents for us,” cited Moore.
The team’s star player is Keno-sha’s Brandon Morris, who played at UW-Green Bay from 2003-05.
Moore said Morris was overlooked as a point guard.
“It has been a great experience,” said Morris of playing with Jay Bee. “Not many rec teams get to travel around the country and play with NBA players. The camaraderie between the players we have from Racine and Kenosha is just great.”
“One of the things I am trying to do is break that Racine versus Kenosha rivalry,” Moore said. “We need to get both communities together to combine forces and go on the road. Kenosha is good
at breeding the 1 and 2 positions, while Racine breeds the 3 and 4 real well. We don’t need that rivalry, and when you put them together like we have, well, they are playing out of this world.”
Jay Bee is largely a year-round venture. A challenge is keeping the team chemistry together after the current college players go back to school.
“The hardest thing is keeping the dynasty going,” admitted Moore. “Our name has helped in the latter part of our dynasty.”
continued on page 6

Moore isn’t about grabbing the best players he can find and “recruiting” them to play for his team. He keeps tabs on his play-ers, making sure their priorities are straight, both on and off the floor.
“We play defense first and of-fense second,” he said. “We play the right way. However, basketball is secondary. You can’t play for me if basketball is all you think about. I tell players you need to stay home if you have responsibilities with your kid. There will be other basketball games.”
Moore has juggled his personal responsibilities well and is a solid role model for his players. Currently, Moore is a full-time student working on his second master’s degree. He runs clinics which help those in adverse situations. In addition, he is a church-goer and family man.
The player-coach is passing on the lessons he learned from the
sponsor of the team, Tom Brand, owner of Jay Bee Auto.
“He is an awesome sponsor,” credited Moore. “He’s bought into my dream and taught me about business and how to be a general manager. I can’t say enough about him because he has been a very helpful person in my life.”
So, just how good is the Jay Bee basketball team? When asked to equate his team to college level teams, Moore responded, “We would beat some of the best Division I and II teams out there. I have so many Division I players who just plain and simple were overlooked.”
Tony Moore (left) has been a Jay Bee coach and player since 1995 .
