Statement of Values and Ethos Of The

    Kings School

The Kings School is a partnership between students, sta, parents andGovernors who seek to create within the School and the community an

educaonal environment in which the strengths and potenal of all are

realised, the needs of individuals are respected, and high expectaons

    community

To maintain the tradion of achievement and academic excellence to the

    best of each individual's ability

To foster a community in which good mutual communicaons are

promoted and in which, through pastoral care, all students achieve self-

esteem and an appreciaon of others, with a sense of responsibility for

    their environment

To provide a broad range of extra-curricular acvies that give

opportunies for all to develop individual interests and skills

To encourage a happy, well-movated sta to work eecvely and

successfully through good leadership, ecient structures and provision

    of resources.

The basis for these values is the Chrisan ethos of the school

    Travel

When you are travelling to and from school you should be properly

dressed in school uniform, es should be done up and shirts should be

tucked in. Remember you are an ambassador of the School and any silly

or disrupve behaviour not only reects badly on yourself but also onthe School. Please behave in a safe and responsible manner. If you are

travelling to school by bicycle, cycle helmets are strongly recommended.

    Organisaon and Registraon

Every pupil at the Kings School belongs to a form. Each form has a Form

Tutor and pastoral prefects who take responsibility for the general

wellbeing of all pupils in the form. Mr Jenkins is Pupil Development

Manager who oversees your academic progress. Mrs Palmer is the PupilSupport Ocer who looks aer pastoral maers. You will remain in the

tutor group whilst in the Years 7- 9 and then change when you reach

    Middle School.

Each pupil will enter one of four houses: St Chads, St Oswalds, St Peters

and School House. School compeons are conducted on an inter-

house basis culminang on Sports Day.

Each pupil is issued with a printed metable and termly calendar givingthe dates and acvies for the term. This calendar incorporates a

metable of lessons and homework to be lled in by the pupil.

Clubs and sports acvies take place regularly at lunchme and aer

school. The morning and aernoon sessions begin with Registraon,

during which the Form Tutor notes which pupils are present or absent.

It is very important that you arrive punctually for registraon so that

you are not marked late or absent. All pupils are expected to be

present in the form room and ready for registraon at 8.35am and

2.15pm. (See also the secon Aendance and Punctuality on page 11).

    Consultaon

We are keen that all pupils should sele in happily and reach their full

potenal in all aspects of school life. Should the progress and/or the

conduct of any pupil give rise to concern, parents will be noed and the

student may be placed on report. In some cases, parents may be asked

to come to the School to discuss the maer.

Any parents who wish to discuss any aspect of their childs well -being at

school should refer the maer, in the rst instance, to the Form Tutor

    or to Mrs Palmer.

It would be convenient, whenever possible, if parents contacted the

school rst to make an appointment.

    Assemblies

A main school assembly is held every Monday and Friday morning.

Throughout the week other assemblies are held:

    House Assembly

    Lower School, Middle School Assembly

Form Assembly, which pupils take turns to lead.

Details are on the assemblies list issued to each Form Tutor at the startof each term.

Alternave Worship - The Prayer Room

The Prayer Room is located at the back of the main hall. Access will be

primarily from the Tech Quad, but there will also be access via the hall.

The Prayer Room is for the use of all pupils, all sta and all faiths. It has

simple furnishings, including a moveable altar. We are using this facilityas an opportunity to extend the worship that goes on in school. Every

two weeks, on a Friday morning, an acvity we have termed Alternave

Worship will take place there as an alternave to our main assembly.

Dierent types of worship will take place - a communion service, a Taize

style service and informal worship led by Ma Wild and the team from

CROPS. This worship is intended to be accessible to all denominaons,

addionally parents are very welcome to aend.

Cathedral ServicesIt is expected that all pupils and teaching sta will aend these. You

should walk to and from the Cathedral along the agreed route with your

Form Tutor and Pastoral Prefects. You should exercise great

consideraon with regard to other pedestrians en route.

    The 10-Day Timetable

The School works on a 10-day metable. This is split into Week 1 and

Week 2. You must get to know your metable quickly and always refer

to your Homework Planner. This will help you plan ahead for the lessons

you have, so that you remember to bring the right books and equipment

    with you.

    School Catering Service

A cafeteria system is used at the School for lunch and break, and this is

operated through a cashless system using a swipe card. Your swipe cardwill have your picture on it and contain a unique idencaon number.

Your card can only be used in the schools dining hall by you. Do not

allow others to borrow your card or buy others food on your card.

Remember your parents have credited the card with a certain amount

of money for you to have meals, not anyone else. If anyone asks you to

buy them food, say no and tell a teacher or prefect, if you are worried.

When your parents give you cash or a cheque to load your card, bring

the envelope to the Finance Oce before registraon in the morning.

That will mean that your card will be credited before break me and you

will be able to purchase food from the Dining Room. You may bring a

    packed lunch if you prefer.

Each me the card is swiped you will see the balance that remains on

the account. If your balance is geng low, request that your parents

give you a cheque in good me to top up your card.If you lose your card

you must report it immediately to the Finance Oce. A temporary card

will be issued unl yours is found or a replacement card is ordered at a

charge of 2.00. There is no need to go hungry: make sure you have

something to eat whilst you are in school. You need the energy to be

able to learn eecvely and see you through the day. All hot food must

be consumed in the Dining Room. You are allowed to eat packed food in

the following places: Dining Room, Form Room and outside. You arenot allowed to eat in the corridor. Chewing gum is not allowed in school

    at all.

Please ensure you bring your swipe card to school every day. (The card

also acts as a key enabling you to gain access to dierent parts of the

School. Without the card, you will be unable to get into some areas of

    the school).

    Morning Break 11.35am

During this short break you can relax with friends, get your books ready

for next lessons, visit the Dining Room for a well-earned snack or use the

    me to meet with sta.

You are not allowed to leave school grounds at break me, unless you

are on your way to games.

    Lunch Break 1.15pm

The main purpose of the Lunch Break is to allow you to eat your meal in

a reasonably peaceful atmosphere and have some spare me for being

with friends or joining in one of the lunchme acvies organised

around the School. Year 7 students are not allowed to leave school

grounds at lunchme unless they are on the way to games. All pupils

must be back in me for aernoon registraon.

    End of School

3.40pm marks the end of the normal school day. If you have no real

reason to stay in school beyond this me, you should leave the premises

quickly and quietly and make your way home in a safe and sensible

manner. However you are free to stay in school, provided you are

involved in some useful acvity under the direct supervision of a teacherand that you have told your parents where you are and what me you

will be home or ready to be picked up by them. Examples of such useful

    acvies might be:

Taking part in games xtures or pracces

Using the Library or the Careers Library unl 4.15pm

Rehearsing for an Assembly, drama producon or music

    performance

Using the computers in the ICT suite.

    Games

If you are not doing Games for any reason you must see the member of

the PE sta who would normally take you for Games. Do not leave this

to just before the lesson starts because sta may have already le the

school to travel to the o-site pitches/facilies. If you are not able to do

games because of illness or injury, then you should give an excuse note,

wrien by your parents, to the member of sta concerned. They will tell

you what to do next. Depending upon the reason for your non-

parcipaon, you may be given other tasks to perform. Do not assume

you are free to sit in the Library or

around the School. Your absence from Games will be recorded as in

every other lesson. You must wear proper PE kit for lessons. You will

have the opportunity to deposit valuables, such as mobile phones, in asafe place.

    Fire Alarm

Somemes the normal school roune is interrupted by a re-drill or

other emergency alarm. When the re alarm sounds:

Leave the building by the nearest exit and line up with your form tutor as

instructed. Listen to the instrucons carefully and stand sll and quiet.

Do not go back into the building for any reason at all, unl you are told

to do so by your tutor.

Full details of the school evacuaon procedure can be found on display

    in all the classrooms.

    ATTENDAN

    CEANDPUNCT

    UALITY

    Aendance and Punctuality

It is important that you develop the habit of arriving in school with

plenty of me to spare before the registraon bell. You will then get a

prompt and proper start to the morning and aernoon sessions.

If you have a good and valid reason for being late, please ask for yourparents to give you a wrien note of explanaon to give to your Form

Tutor or a member of sta checking late arrivals. Unexplained lateness

does go down on your record of aendance.

If you miss the registraon period through lateness you must sign

in at Pupil Recepon immediately on your arrival at school.

It is very important that the school aendance records show

correctly who is in school, in case there is an emergency.

If you are regularly late or absent it will be followed up by a

member of sta and your parents will be contacted. The

Educaon Aendance Ocer may be informed if the problem

    persists.

    Absence

If you are going to be absent from school because of illness or for some

other reason, please follow these guidelines:

If the absence is known about in advance, ask your parents to

write a leer of explanaon to your Form Tutor. Please be aware

that the Headteacher is the only person who can authorise an

absence and that absence due to holidays/me o outside school

holidays may well go down on your record as unauthorised. Your

parents must contact the Headteacher if they are seeking

permission for you to be away from school for any reason other

    than medical.

If it is a sudden absence (eg because of illness or accident) ask

your parents/guardian to telephone the school on the rst day of

absence before 9am and each day of absence thereaer. The

school has an answerphone that is available for your parents to

leave messages on from 4pm to 8am the following morning.

When you return to school aer an absence, ask your parents to

give you a note conrming the details (i.e. dates and reason for

    absence).

If you need to be absent from school for part of the day (e.g.

dental appointment) bring a note and the appointment card to

show to your Form Tutor (and the subject teacher, if you need to

leave a lesson early) and see signing in/out below.

You need to show your appointment card to Pupil Recepon

    before you leave the building.

    Signing Out/In

If you have to leave school for any reason during the day, you must sign

out (and, if necessary, back in) on the VERICOOL screen which you will

nd on the wall just outside Pupil Recepon. If this is not working thenyou must sign in/out on the relevant sheet that can be found on Mrs

    Serjeants desk.

    Accidents or Illness

If you become ill or have an accident at school the rst thing you must

do is tell a teacher and then, if necessary, go to Pupil Recepon.

The Kings School does not supply any kind of medicaon. Medicines

should only be brought into school where essenal and will only be

accepted if they have been prescribed by a doctor, denst, nurse

prescriber or pharmacist prescriber. If you are taking medicaon your

parents must complete a Medical Consent Form, (this can be

downloaded from the school website). It must be properly packaged

with your name and given to Mrs Serjeant in Pupil Recepon, with a

note from your parents explaining what it is for, the correct dosage and

the me it should be taken. You must then go to Pupil Recepon at the

appropriate me to take your medicaon. Students aged 13 or over

may carry a one day supply of pain relieving medicaon. N.B. A one day

supply consists of a maximum of two tablets. If you have an inhaler or

epipen you must keep it with you at all mes and a spare can be stored

by Mrs Serjeant in Pupil recepon if you wish, for emergencies.

You must not phone or text to ask parents to collect you, if necessary,

your parents will be contacted by the school and asked to collect you.

    Standards of Behaviour

    Prefects

Trustworthy and responsible pupils from the Sixth Form are appointed

as Prefects, to help teachers look aer certain parts of the School and to

help you if you have a problem. They have dues and responsibilies

and you must follow the instrucons they give. You can recognise them

by the black gowns they wear over their blazers.

    Code of Conduct

Pupils and sta of The Kings School treat one another with respect and

courtesy: their individual behaviour is orderly and civilised; they move

calmly and eciently from place to place, arriving punctually for theirlessons and other appointments.

The Kings School is a large community. During the day a large number of

people work within the School. We, therefore, depend on each other to

make the School run smoothly. Every member of the School should act

in a responsible, polite, sensible manner, having respect for all other

people and their property. This means that pupils should:

Move around the buildings in a quiet manner, keeping to the le

where possible, not running, pushing or shoung. This may mean

allowing people to pass or opening doors for others.

Outside school, pupils must remember that they take the

reputaon of the School with them, wherever they go. Therefore,

they should always act in ways which enhance our reputaon.

    Speak politely to everyone.

Follow requests made by sta and prefects.

Keep the School neat and dy. This includes pung all lier into

the bins provided, keeping the furniture and walls free from

gra, being careful with displays. Rooms should be le clean and

dy at the end of each lesson, breaks and lunch mes.

Eat and drink only in the dining room, form rooms or outside.

Chewing gum is not acceptable anywhere.

Not smoke in school hours and/or when wearing their school

    uniform.

    STA

    NDARDSOFBEHAVIOUR

Be correctly and smartly dressed in full school uniform from the

me they leave home, to when they return. Pupils should change

back into full uniform aer all PE lessons.

Arrive at lessons with all the items of the basic school equipment

list plus all relevant exercise and text books.

Sit correctly on chairs, and not tables.

Meet all deadlines set for the compleon and handing in of work.

Thank members of sta when appropriate, e.g. following an out of

    school acvity.

Do not obstruct pavements, especially when waing for buses, or

walking to the Cathedral and Sports Fields.

The classroom (including laboratories, Technology areas and theHall) during lesson me is a place of work where there need to be

rules to allow everyone to work safely, successfully and enjoyably.

The computer facilies should be used for the educaonal

purposes for which they are intended.

At the start of lessons, pupils should:

Either wait quietly outside the room and enter when told to do so

by a member of sta or, if allowed, wait in a quiet and orderlymanner in the room, unl the teacher arrives.

Take out all the books and equipment needed for the lesson, and

put away all bags under the tables.

    During lessons, pupils should:

Listen to the teacher and other pupils in silence.

Ask and answer quesons by raising their hand, not by calling out.

Work sensibly, not distracng or annoying others in the lesson.

Not eat or drink during the lesson.

Enter all homework instrucons in their Homework Planners.

At the end of a lesson only pack away when instructed by the

teacher, and then wait to be dismissed.

    Mobile Phones

Mobile phones must be switched o during registraon, assemblies and

all lessons. If your phone rings or distracts others during these mes it

will be conscated and only returned to you at the end of the day.

Always leave your mobile in a secure place. When you are in PE/Gameslessons, hand in your mobile along with other valuables for safekeeping

    by a member of sta.

    MP3 players/iPods and similar

These should not be worn around school and certainly not in lessons.

The only excepons to this are during lunchme either in form rooms

or outside. Pupils should not walk around the corridors wired for

sound. Equipment will be conscated if pupils do not comply with this

rule. This equipment is not allowed to be played during lesson me in

any area of the school unless an integral part of a (Language, Music,

    English or Drama) lesson.

MP3 players/iPods and similar equipment are allowed in school because

pupils use them during their journey to and from school. It is

recommended that they be locked away in lockers and not le in bags.

    An-Bullying Policy

    A denion

There are many denions of bullying, but most have three things in

    common:

    it is deliberately hurul behaviour

it is repeated, oen over a period of me

it is dicult for those being bullied to defend themselves.

Bullying can take many forms but three main types are:

physical - hing, kicking, taking of belongings

verbal - name-calling, insulng, racist remarks

    indirect-

spreading nasty stories about someone, excluding

    someone from social groups.

Bullying is the abuse of power by a person (or group) who is somehow

stronger, resulng in some distress, harm or feeling of isolaon.

We believe that you are entled to receive your educaon in a safe,

caring empowering environment, free from fear and inmidaon.

The School will consider each Bullying incident individually and

recognises that a variety of responses will be necessary to deal with

incidents. Exclusion may be considered as a course of acon if the

    bullying does not stop.

Do not suer in silence or allow others to.

Tell someone and keep on telling unl something is done.

The Child Protecon members of sta are:

Mrs H Birch, Mrs K Denman and Mrs C Palmer

    Cause for Concern

If a member of sta has a concern about you, your standard of work,

atude/ behaviour/eort or general welfare, they may insgate our

four stage referral system. This will be passed to the Pupil Support

Ocer and the Pupil Development Manager. Someone will then contact

you in an eort to help you solve the problem or overcome thediculty. If it is a concern about behaviour or anything which

contravenes the Code of Conduct then sta may use sancons.

the school feels are vital for young people in the 21st Century.

The number of points awarded can be viewed on the summary reports

    SCHOOLWORK

    School Work

Whatever the level of your skills or abilies, always do your own

    personal best.

Do not do anything which might interfere with, or disrupt, the work

    and eort of others.

    Homework

Homework is expected from all pupils. This normally amounts to about

an hour to an hour and a half per night in the Lower School. You must

use your Homework Planner to organise homework. Form Tutors as

well as parents, will check that you are using your planner correctly.

Your parents should check and sign your planner every week.

    Missed/Excused Lessons

Somemes through no fault of your own (e.g. illness) you will miss

lessons and the school work covered during those lessons. This could

mean that there will be gaps in your knowledge and understanding of

the subject concerned. This could seriously aect your progress and

aainment. On other occasions if you are in school but need to be

excused from a lesson for some reason, you must see the teacher whose

lesson you will be missing, explain the situaon and seek their

permission. They will rarely refuse you, if you have seen them in

advance and you are up-to-date with all your work for them.

Communicaon is important, do not send messages with other people,

assuming you have permission to miss a lesson.

The following advice should help you avoid some of the problems of

    missed work:

If you know in advance that you are going to be away, make sure

that you ask your subject teachers for suitable work to be

    completed during your absence.

If you cannot see the teachers beforehand, ask your parents to

telephone your Form Tutor or Pupil Support Ocer to discuss

how work can be obtained. Telephoning or e-mailing a friend is

another useful way of keeping up-to-date with what you are

    missing at school.

If you run out of set work to do, reading a good book is a valuable

acvity, unl further supplies of school work can be provided by

    the school.

When you return to school, see each of your teachers and work

out a plan for bringing notes and exercise books up-to-date.

    Acvies Programme

There are lots of things going on at school:- clubs, team pracces,

orchestra and choir rehearsals to name but a few. Look at your planner,

the noceboards, bullens and ask your teachers, so that you become

familiar with all the opportunies available to you at school. All these

acvies are in addion to the normal curriculum and can help you gain

more condence and enrich your educaon.

If you are represenng the school away from the school, e.g. playing for

a team or performing at the Cathedral, we would expect you to wear the

correct school kit or uniform. Somemes when you go on a school trip

you are allowed to wear your own clothes. Your clothes should be

smart but casual. No extreme fashions will be allowed. Make sure you

check with a member of sta that your appearance is acceptable or you

may not be allowed to take part in the acvity.

    Residenal Trips

All Year 7s take part in a residenal visit locally or a lile further aeld,

to parcipate in a number of outdoor acvies in their rst summerterm. This takes places during Acvies Week in July. They are split into

two groups: one deparng Monday and returning on Wednesday and

the second from Wednesday to Friday. The approximate cost of this trip

    is 140.
