ΑΞΔAlpha Xi DeltaThe sisters of Alpha Xi Delta were very involved in and outside the Greek community this year. As

many know, Sandra Scheuer, a victim of the Kent State shootings, was a member of Alpha Xi Delta in 1970. Every May 4, the Beta Tau chapter gathers to celebrate Sandy’s life. Other events last semester included: the Parents Day luncheon, in which our parents visited the house; Relay for Life fundraiser, where AZD raised over $4,000; and helping out at the Special Olympics in Akron with Sigma Chi.Xi Week is our main event in the fall semester. ΑΦAlpha PhiThis year’s homecoming was a little different from the years before. It started out with the ladies of Alpha Phi marching

in the Kent State University parade down Main St. and then was followed with a delicious BBQ. The BBQ consisted of a range of foods from pulled pork and hot dogs to a refreshing green salad with an orange glaze. During the BBQ the Sharon Siegel Scholarship was awarded to two outstanding seniors: Leah Campbell and Jayme Luciano. It was a great way for the newly recruited sisters of Alpha Phi to mingle with their new sisters and Alumni.

Our Philanthropies 4th Annual Red Dress Gala last spring raised 6,700 dollars for the American Heart Association and the Alpha Phi Foundation All of our parents and friends came to support us as well as fellow Greeks. We had a fashion show, a silent auction, and a hypnotist come for entertainment. We are all excited for our upcoming Gala in February and hope to raise more money for our wonderful philanthropies! 1st Annual Mud Tug event was held this year and we had 13 fraternities and 4 sororities participate. We hope to make it even bigger next year fall! Everyone came together, made teams, and participated in a friendly tug-of-war competition that was played in the mud.

Chi OmegaΧΩThe 2009 fall semester has been great for the sisters of the Lambda Delta Chapter of Chi Omega. We were recently

named Kent State’s Sorority of the Year for which our sisters are very proud of. On September 13, 2009 we added 32 new Baby Hooties to the chapter. We have held many events to get to know the new members including Chi O Carnival, the New Member Retreat and an Overnight Sisterhood. Members have also competed in campus activities such as Alpha Phi Mud Tug, where they placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Recently, our sisters gave an outstanding performance at KSU’s Songfest Competition, where they raised $1,400.00 for Hattie Larlham and placed 3rd Overall. The girls were paired with ATO and DTD and did a monster themed dance routine. Community service is also very important to the sisters of Lambda Delta. Our first annual Chi O Casino night was held

on November 20, 2009 where Chi Omega raised $1,300 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event was a success with Blackjack, and Poker tables as well as Karaoke, Stand up Comedy and Raffle prizes. Many members also volunteered this year at Akron’s Cattle Baron’s Ball to raise money for the American Cancer Society working the silent auction. The Chi Omega Scholarship Brunch took place on November 14, 2009 with 53 members honored for excellent GPAs.

Senior Lindsay Meade won the Ann Walter’s Scholarship for outstanding academic achievement and leadership in the chapter. The new Members of the Executive Board for the 2010 year are Erica Rodenbaugh as President, Stephanie Howlett as

Vice President, Lauren Alexander as Secretary, Lauren Levitt as Treasurer, Stephanie LaVoie as New Member Educator, Kendall Lehrman as Personnel Chair, Kelly Shaw as Recruitment Chair, Brittany Drury as Panhellenic Delegate and Jamie Speziale as Facility Manager. Congratulations to the new 2010 E-Board!Coming up in the Spring semester is the 3rd Annual Sloppy Joes with the Chi Os Dinner, held at the Chi Omega house,

Parent’s Day brunch, Spring Date Party, Formal, MS Walk, and Relay for Life.

Delta GammaΔΓDelta Gamma had a very successful fall semester. Before classes started,

we participated in Kent State’s “Movers and Groovers” program which helped freshmen students move into their dorm rooms and encouraged students to get involved on campus. Shortly after classes began, the Kent State Panhellenic Council’s recruitment was one of the largest in campus history and led to Delta Gamma initiating 34 new sisters. With a new total of 101 members, Delta Gamma immediately began participating in sisterhood and special events. Our annual Dad’s Day was a success. Sisters and family members attended a Kent State football game where they tailgated and even had the opportunity to run onto the field with the football team. The girls also hosted movie and game nights as well as planned trips to Cleveland for an Indians baseball game and Sandusky to visit Cedar Point.Delta Gamma sisters bonded not only through their planned special events,

but also through participation in their philanthropy, Service for Sight. Girls sent handmade cards to children in the Akron Children’s Hospital for Halloween and paired with the Kent Lion’s Club to help box and deliver carnations for their annual carnation sale fundraiser. Delta Gamma also volunteered at Highbrook Lodge, a camp for the visually impaired. Finally, for the first time in four years Delta Gamma brought back their annual Anchor Splash fundraising event that featured the synchronized swimming talents of six Greek teams. The event was a huge success, raising over $2,500 for the Delta Gamma Foundation. The active members are also hosting a Christmas party at their chapter

house for Delta Gamma alumna. There will be Christmas music and holiday related activities that will allow members to form relationships with their preceding alumna. It is a time for the collegians and alumna to gather and reflect on the success of the fall semester and improvements that can be made to promote a more favorable spring semester. With such an outstanding fall, the sisters are excited for all of the planned events to come in the spring. More exciting

sisterhoods are planned to help form bonds of lasting friendship. Delta Gamma will also host its annual spaghetti dinner at the chapter house to raise money to benefit the visually impaired. The girls will celebrate the fraternity’s Founder’s Day, March 14, by attending a luncheon with the area alumna. The Gamma Epsilon chapter is working to make improvements in their value-based recruitment process, new member

education system, and implementation of more hands-on service projects. We are making great strides towards a successful spring semester and a more prosperous future for the fraternity.

As the fall semester approached, the Gamma Kappa chapter of Delta Zeta worked hard for recruitment. Receiving quota allowed Gamma Kappa to pledge 34 New Members raising our total membership to 108 and making us the largest chapter on campus. Also during this time, Courtney Donohoe, Chapter President, was chosen as a 2009 Florence Hood Miner award winner, the National award honoring outstanding Juniors who are campus and chapter leaders. In October, Delta Zeta hosted a Homecoming Brunch for Alumni and a Founder’s Day ceremony for alumni and collegians

alike. Delta Zeta participated in many different philanthropies this semester and took home First Place at Delta Gamma’s Anchorsplash. The Delta Zeta sisters recently participated in the annual All Greek Philanthropy, Songfest. Delta Zeta was paired with the

following fraternities: Delta Upsilon, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Delta Lambda Phi, and Kappa Alpha Psi. The group won Best Performance for their Magic themed routine and took Second Place Overall.Delta Zeta is proud to announce that one of their members, Brianna Lawhorn, was elected as the 2010 Panhellenic President.

Greek Alumni Newsletter2009Sigma Sigma SigmaΣΣΣThis fall semester, the women of Sigma Sigma Sigma have recruited 14 new members during formal recruitment and four new

members during informal recruitment.During the homecoming festivities, Tri Sigma participated in the “Penny Wars” competition that was being held all week; our chapter

attended the guest speaker and participated in roll call. We built a float that was in the homecoming parade and won homecoming overall.Representatives from our chapter attended the Something of Value

Program. A few of our members came up with the idea to have an all sorority social that is alcohol free, showing that Greeks can have fun without the use of alcohol.Tri Sigma has participated and donated to the various philanthropies held

by other Greek organizations on campus such as Delta Gamma’s Anchor Splash, Alpha Xi Delta’s Xi Man competition, Chi Omega’s Casino Night, Lambda Chi Alpha’s Pumpkin Bash, Tau Kappa Epsilon’s TEKE Week and the upcoming philanthropy held by Delta Tau Delta, .The biggest philanthropy that our chapter participated in was Songfest. For

two weeks we asked for donations for Hattie Larlham and worked hard on our dance moves. One of the last fundraisers we are holding is our CiCi’s Pizza fundraiser. We are raising money for our new house, 1066 Fraternity

Circle, which is coming soon! For the upcoming spring semester, Tri Sigma’s philanthropy will be held. Our philanthropy is called Tri Sigma Night Live, after the

popular show Saturday Night Live, and is usually held in March. It is named after Robbie Page, one of our past president’s sons who had polio. Our goal back then was to raise money to find a cure. A cure was found, so now we raise money for terminally ill children in Texas and North Carolina.Last year we raised over $600 for the Robbie Page Memorial and we’re hoping for more this year.On the local level, we make bears for the children at the Akron Children’s Hospital. We also donate and participate in the philanthropies that are held in the spring such as Delta Zeta’s Lip-sync, Sigma Chi’s Derby

Days, Sigma Nu’s No Pants Week, and Delta Upsilon’s corn hole tournament. One of our biggest events, next to Robbie Page, is Tri Sigma’s Founder’s Day, which is April 20th. This event is held every year on

or around that day and is for all alumnae, family, and current members. During this event, we partake in singing our traditional song, fundraise by raffling off gift baskets, and give out two major awards by our advisors. These awards are the Sister of the Year award, for any sophomore or junior, and Member of the Year award, for any senior.

Senior Highlight: Rachael UhlikΣΣΣRachael Uhlik has been a member of Tri Sigma for four years. She came through

during fall recruitment of 2006 and was initiated November 18, 2006.

Rachael has served on many chairs. The positions that stand out the most are

Philanthropy, Ritual, Social, Alumnae Relations, Recording Secretary for Honor

Council, and her current position as chapter Secretary.

Rachael is a senior Hospitality Major and plans to graduate in May 2010 after

her hopeful internship with Disney. Rachael is also a member of the Professional

Convention Manager’s Association, a group within the Hospitality program.

Greek Alumni Newsletter2009Monica Volante not only excels as a Chi Omega, she soars in the realm of scholarship. Volante is majoring in electronic media

production, has been on the Dean’s List for four semesters, and plans to graduate in May of 2009. Her involvement within the sorority and in TV2 has proved her leadership skills.“It all goes back to doing something you love and having time management skills,” said Volante. “Liking what you do and

being able to manage your time wisely are the keys to being successful.”Volante has served as the chapter’s career and personal development director for the 2009 school year. In this role she

has planned parents day, an alumni brunch, senior wills and retreat, a resume workshop and facilitated the execution of GreekLifeEdu.Outside of the sorority she has been actively involved in TV2. Volante has held numerous positions including: programming

director, producer, director and executive producer of The Blurb. “I consider TV2 more than an extracurricular activity,” she said. “I get a good taste of how the real world opperates.”Volante created an entertainment show called The Blurb that is unique to TV2. The program is more laid back than traditional

newscasts allowing viewers a different experience. “This show is a breath of fresh air,” said Volante. “It is nice to have something I can call my own that is fun to do.” Brittany Barnes, also a Chi Omega, is the shows anchor. Tune into the show Monday nights at 9 p.m.

Senior Highlight: Monica VolanteΧΟ

Senior Highlight: Sean BradyΣΤΓSean Brady's Greek experience at Kent State University has been a unique one. The

senior Accounting major from Independence, Ohio, joined Sigma Tau Gamma in the Spring semester of 2005. When he joined there were only 10 active members of the Fraternity. The chapter was deteriorating and he was the only Associate member initiated that semester.

Although Sean was new to the Greek community, he had gained leadership through various experiences in his life, including playing for the KSU Rugby team. As a new member Sean did something no one expected him to do; recruit a 15-man associate class in his first semester active. “At that time Sigma Tau Gamma was not what I expected it to be, and I had an idea of Greek life should be,” says Sean. To achieve that goal Sean built Sigma Tau Gamma from the ground up, running as President for 2 years.

Shortly after Sean's presidency ended, the chapter paid off a $16,000 debt to Sig Tau Nationals incurred due to poor management before Sean's time. Now the chapter has 35 active Brothers and two lettered houses. “To see the chapter where it is today, makes me really believe in the relevancy of Greek Life.”

After Sean graduates with a B.A. In Accounting and a B.A. In Marketing this Spring, Sean hopes to move to Chicago or Colorado to work in the public accounting or financial advising field. Within 10 years he would like to delve into the realm of politics and own real estate.

Please consider nominating a Distinguished Alumni, Young Alumni, or Chapter Advisor for this year’s brunch. Nominations are due Monday, January 25, 2010. Greek Alumni Newsletter2009Kappa Alpha PsiΚΑΨThe fall semester for Kappa Alpha Psi has been filled with many events that brought

success and service. Throughout the fall we have served the local community and helped students connect with the Kent State learning community. Our events have catered to everyone from speed dating with students to playing bingo and enjoying ice cream with senior citizens. Not only have we brought people together through mixers but also through charitable

causes. At Kent Roosevelt High school we hosted a blood drive, and on campus we directed a bone marrow registry. We’ve also prepared students for the future internships and job fairs by presenting a business etiquette and fashion show. As 2009 comes to a close we are preparing for another successful semester in the

Spring. The brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi are look forward to providing more opportunities in the upcoming semester. Have a happy holiday season and New Year!

Phi Sigma KappaΦΣΚAs the fall semester arrived for Phi Sigma Kappa many questions were in the air

especially with such a young executive board. However, the chapter rose to the occasion against adversity and has initiated ten new members. In addition to having a successful new association class, we as a chapter also won IFC’s annual Song Fest. Partnered with Alpha Phi and Phi Delta Theta our members worked long and hard to come up with a creative dance routine that eventually culminated in them winning first place overall in the competition. Our three chapters also raised over $4,000 to donate to the Hattie Larham charity. Also, near the end of the semester our chapter was informed that a young child in South Lyon, Michigan was suffering from a rare form of cancer and all he wished for was to receive Christmas cards. Our chapter banded together and wrote sincere cards to express our sentiments for the young boy and complimented the courage he possessed as he fought his battle with cancer. Next semester, we are continuing to help those that are not as fortunate as we here who are privileged to be associated with Phi Sigma Kappa. A date auction is planned to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. Concisely, fraternity members will be auctioned off to sorority members for a base price and then will have the pleasure to take our fellow Greeks to a dinner or other functions at the 157 Lounge.Lastly, one of our more recent alumni’s has enjoyed immediate success after graduation. Jeffery Guska whom graduated in spring

of 2009 from KSU with a degree in nursing has also dabbled in business and ventured to open the newest social recreational facility in Kent named the 157 Lounge, which is located at 157 Water Street. This has been Jeff and his brother’s goal for many years since they had first begun college, their hard work resonates within our whole chapter. The bar is set up with a very modern theme and accommodates the void that the student population has needed for many years. In conclusion we as a chapter have grown tremendously and our alumni have worked hard to make sure the Kent community knows that Phi Sigma Kappa fosters a home for members to reach their full potential and be a successful Kent State Alumnus.

This year the Order of Omega chapter has been putting its efforts towards improving faculty perception of the Greek community and bringing the Greeks closer together. The Omega Nu chapter at Kent State currently consists of 30 Greeks from eleven different fraternities and sororities who have both a high GPA and proven leadership contributions to the Greek community. While Order of Omega has been at Kent State since 1969; in recent years, they were not very active in the Greek Life and seemed to only meet a few times a semester and not add anything substantial. But over the past year desire was shown to make Order of Omega better known throughout the Greek community. A great example of our presence on campus came when every Greek on the 2009 Homecoming Court were also members of Order of Omega. Consequently, both the Homecoming King, Benjamin Spott, and Queen, Brittni Cortright, are members of Order of Omega.

As a way to get faculty more involved in Greek Life; Order of Omega, in collaboration with Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council hosted the first Distinguished Faculty Dessert Reception on December first. The event, which drew twelve nominations awarded six outstanding Kent State faculty members and initiated them as honorary members into the Omega Nu chapter. The event also served to portray the much overlooked side of Greek Life dealing with academia and philanthropy; students were recognized for receiving good grades and upholding the high ideals of being Greek.

Greek Alumni Newsletter2009Phi Delta ThetaΦΔΘThe Fall Semester has been a busy one for Phi Delta Theta Ohio Lambda. The 2009 Fall Semester was the first full semester

for Phi Delta Theta to enjoy their charter after earning it back in in Spring 2009. They welcomed their alumni on Homecoming for barbecue and volleyball at the fraternity house, following the Kent State football game. The chapter recently elected new officers, including a new president, Dan Fisher, and vice president, Patrick Cassetti. The fraternity took part in two major Greek philanthropies at Kent State, Xi Man, sponsored by Alpha Xi Delta, and Songfest. Phi Delta Theta partnered with Alpha Phi and Phi Sigma Kappa to win the overall Songfest competition and raise $4,500 as a team for Hattie Larlham. This was the second year in-a-row that Phi Delta Theta was a part of the winning team at Songfest. The chapter plans to hold their philanthropy in the Spring to benefit the ALS Foundation. Phi Delt will also participate in Delta Zeta’s philanthropy, Lipsync. In addition, they will initiate 14 new Phikeia from the Fall Semester. With any luck, Phi Delta Theta Ohio Lambda will be able to enjoy a 2010 Spring Semester as good as the Fall Semester.

2009 SongFest Champs

Sigma Tau GammaΣΤΓThe Iota chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma has kept its hands full this semester.

The Fraternity held a pasta dinner on December 10th to raise money for alumnus Josh Pijor, whom is currently battling cancer. Striving to be as involved as possible, the Sig Taus participated in Songfest, Alpha Phi’s first annual Mud Tug, Chi Omega’s Chi-O Casino Night and Alpha Zeta Delta’s Xi Man philanthropies as well as winning this year’s homecoming while paired with Sigma Sigma Sigma. This semester, the boys held three socials: A barbeque with Delta Zeta, pumpkin carving with Chi Omega and bowling with the Tri-Sigs. Sigma Tau Gamma was also requested to lend their hand in community service to help the Akron Museum of Art for their third annual Switch fundraiser. As a competitive group of young men, Sigma Tau Gamma had three

intramural teams this fall: two flag football teams; Sig Tau Blue and Sig Tau Silver and a broomball team; The Wolfpack. These young men are striving to improve alumni relations and received the honor to be invited on an alumni camping trip as well as seeing a great turnout for homecoming and the Kent vs. Iowa State football game. In order to provide the fraternity with a financial backbone, the brothers work 20 Cleveland Cavaliers games a year for fundraising. Last, but definitely not least, the brothers are proud of their 10 new initiates, the Alpha Pi class of Iota.Sigma Tau Gamma would also like to commend two its Brothers for their

hard work on the Kent State University Inter-Fraternity Council. Frank Russ and Nathan Noll completed their year as Vice President of Finance and Vice President of Communications, respectively. Their hard work has made Kent State University and its Greek Life better as a whole.

Greek Alumni Newsletter2009Alpha Epsilon PiΑΕΠAlpha Epsilon Pi at Kent State got an early start celebrating Hanukkah when more than 200 students gathered on Thursday,

December 3rd at the Cohn Jewish Student Center for Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity and Hillel at Kent State's first-ever LatkeFest philanthropic Hanukkah party. The event raised more than $1,800 for Sha'are Tzedek Hospital, one of the largest public hospitals in Israel and Alpha Epsilon Pi's national philanthropy. This is the first time that brothers remember the chapter ever being able to raise more then $1,000 for philanthropy in a single year. All of the AEPi brothers spent months preparing for Latkefest. We sold tickets, hung posters, cooked latkes the day of the

event, and even made a YouTube video promoting Latkefest (You can watch it here: http://www.tinyurl.com/LatkeFestVideo.) The five-hour event featured a latke-eating contest, a guest DJ, dancing and inspiring speeches from AEPi brothers about Sha'are Tzedek's work and mission. "Sha'are Tzedek serves more than 60,000 patients a year," Joel Abramson, Hillel student ambassador and AEPi past president told the crowd of students. "The money raised tonight will help build Sha'are Tzedek's new pediatric wing." Another big accomplishment for Alpha Epsilon Pi this year was Homecoming. Benjamin Spott, a senior biotechnology

major, and a former president of AEPi was chosen as the 2009 Homecoming King. Spott was honored to be nominated by his fraternity brothers, and his dedication to the Greek community and the university speaks for itself. He is the current President of Order of Omega, and the former Vice President of Scholarship for IFC; he is also serving as the undergraduate representative on the College of University Libraries Dean Search Committee. Spott followed in David Danenberg’s footsteps when he was chosen to be on the Homecoming Court. Danenberg is another former president of AEPi, a current graduate student in Higher Education and Administration at Kent State and a member of the 2008 Homecoming Court. Alpha Epsilon Pi is currently located at 323 East College Avenue, where we have been living for the past 9 years. We have been

on Kent’s campus for the past 30 years after being re-chartered in 1979. We had an excellent Rush this past fall inducting 7 new members into our chapter. AEPi is always looking for up-and-coming members who are gentlemen, ready to contribute to AEPi & the entire Kent community. We actively participate in community service and Greek philanthropies such as Alpha Xi Delta’s “Xi Man”, which we won the performance competition for the 3rd year in a row this Fall.

Delta ChiΔΧThis semester for Delta Chi has been a good one for the most part. We are

becoming more of a chapter to help us get the ball rolling for us. We had our annual Associate/Active football game in mid-October, of course the Active team won for the 6th straight year, maybe one year the AM’s will win. This was a great way for the Actives to bond with our 6 new pledges. Our philanthropy this semester was a big success for us. We were given a Dip ‘N Dots/Pretzel stand at Ohio Stadium down and Ohio State. This allowed us to work every home game that OSU had this year. Our chapter was given 10% of the profit that the stand made. I’m not sure of the exact total, but we made upwards of $200 each game, for 5 games. So this was a big fund raiser for us. We have not had an opportunity like this in quite sometime. We are planning on giving a portion of our profits to The Jimmy V Foundation. For all who didn’t know, The Jimmy V Foundation is a foundation for cancer research. For the spring we are tentatively scheduled to work the spring game down at OSU, so that would be a good way to kick off the philanthropy. As for others, ideas are being generated but nothing has been decided on. This semester we had a generally successful homecoming celebration. Even though there was a low alumni turn out, it was still an excellent time. The major event that we have coming up in the spring will be our chapter’s 20th anniversary celebration. We hope to see people in attendance that may not have been around for years. This semester for Delta Chi was a general success and we hope next semester will be even better.
