    Titanium Dioxide Photocatalyst Treatment of

Cooling Coils 1st Application in Singapore

Titanium dioxide when activated byUV lights becomes a powerfuloxidizing agent which:

    Converts harmful VOCs (e.g.

    formaldehyde) into harmlesssubstances.

Removes odours (e.g. ammoniafrom toilets, musty smell frommoulds).

    Kills bacteria, viruses and mould.

Titanium Dioxide Coating on Cooling Coil

    Interactive Multi-System Control (IMSC)

    FacilityBookingSystem MeetingRoom IHEMS

IMSC involves the use of high-level computer interfaces and business

rules between the various IT systems of the hospital to enhance operationalefficiency and eliminate energy wastage.

One such use of IMSC entails integrating the Facility Booking System withthe IHEMS so that the air-conditioning and lighting systems for all the facilities

(meeting rooms, training rooms, conference rooms and auditorium) will only beturned on during the booked period of the facilities.

In the event that the duration of usage of the rooms is cut short, occupancysensors installed in these rooms will turn off the lights and air-conditioning toprevent energy wastage.

    Weather Responsive Strategy Rain Sensing

A special weather programme will be incorporated into the IHEMS so that on a raining day therain sensor and the weather programme will work hand-in-hand to increase the temperature

setpoint of the indoor spaces to conserve energy and to enhance occupant comfort.

The raising of1C of temperature during raining days will help save between 7% to 8% of the air-conditioning energy.

The IHEMS will also send a signal to the irrigation system to cut off water supply to prevent the

irrigation system from discharging water to the vegetation when it is raining.

    Weather Responsive Strategy Photocells and

    Daylight Harvesting

KTPH exploits its full daylight harvesting potential by installing photocells invarious parts of the hospital to keep the street, landscape and other exteriorlighting off as long as possible.

The photocells work better than time clocks or time schedules due to the varianceof daylight caused by weather or cloud cover. Photocells save energy bystretching the off time of the exterior lighting.

Integrated CO and Night Purge System

CO sensors will used to control theamount of fresh air into the hospitalspaces based on the measured COlevel (Maintain at 900 to 1,000 ppm).

This system will be integrated to theNight Purge System to improve IAQas the same OA dampers and exhaustair fans will be used.

    Night Cycle

KTPH operates round-the-clock and to keep its energy consumption low,the hospital will operate on an economy mode at night by raising thenight temperature setpoint by 1C from 11 pm to 6 am during which

time the hospital is expected to be lightly occupied.

Ventilation Control of Car Park Fans

At KTPH the IBMS will deploy smart controls using carbon monoxide (CO)sensors to shorten the operating hours of the car park ventilation fans.

The fans will only come on at CO level of15 ppm and above.

    Occupancy Sensing

Occupancy sensors will be installed in rooms which are sporadically occupied(meeting rooms, training rooms, gyms, etc) to automatically turn off lightswhen the rooms are vacated.

Innovative VAV Control Strategy First in Singapore

Fan Pressure Optimization for VAV Systems

As cooling loads change, VAV terminals modulate to vary airflowsupplied to the zones.

This causes the pressure inside the supply ductwork to change. In manysystems, a pressure sensor is located approximately two-thirds of the

distance along the main supply duct.

The AHU varies the capacity of the supply fan to maintain the staticpressure in this location at a constant set point.

With this approach, however, the system usually generates more static

pressure at part load than necessary.

  • 7/28/2019 KTP Hospital Green Technologies

    18/28

Fan Pressure Optimization for VAV Systems at KTPH

When communicating controllers are used on VAV boxes, it is possible tooptimize this static-pressure control function to minimize duct pressureand save fan energy.

Each VAV-unit controller knows the current position of its air-modulationdamper. The IHEMS continually polls these individual controllers, looking forthe VAV terminal with the damper that is open the widest.

The supply fan's set point then is reset to providejust enough pressureso that at least one damperis nearly wide open. This results in the supplyfan generating only enough static pressure to push the required quantity of

air through this "critical" VAV-terminal unit.

  • 7/28/2019 KTP Hospital Green Technologies

    19/28

Fan Pressure Optimization for VAV Systems at KTPH

Reduced supply-fan energy use. At part-load conditions, the supply fan is able tooperate at a lower static pressure and consume less energy.

Lower sound levels. The supply fan does not generate as much static pressure

and typically generates less noise. In addition, with lower pressures in the supplyduct, the dampers in the VAV boxes open wider, resulting in less regeneratednoise.

Reduced risk of fan surge. With the fan operating at a lower pressure whendelivering reduced airflow, the fan operating point is kept farther away from thesurge region.

Fuel Cells Green Back-up Power Solution for IHEMS

    Cabinet Housing for

    Hydrogen Cylinders

    Fuel Cell

Fuel cells are cost-effective, reliable and emit no pollutants. Unlikebattery-backed UPS, fuel cells are environmental friendly no toxicbattery waste polluting the environment. As fuel cells are powered byhydrogen, back-up power duration can be stretched indefinitely witha continuous supply of hydrogen, a distinct advantage over batteries.
