August Guest Speaker Paul Miller by Linda Joyce Right from his opening words, Paul’s passion for his chosen me- dium of tempera was clearly obvious. After giving a brief history of Egg Tempura he went on to explain how in 2007, after many years of Dark expressionist work, he re-evaluated his whole approach to his art & his life. Having been diagnosed with a life-changing illness, he wanted to chal- lenge himself and face the future with a positive clear focus, not looking into the darkness but into the light & what better way than to return to his first love – Real- ism, in the difficult medium of Egg Tem- pera. Paul describes it as a place of great mys- tery that requires good drawing skills, a clear understanding of colour, patience & a strong belief in what you can do. Tempura is made of powered pigment, egg yolk & water and is shown to its very best on a flat board with “rabbit skin glue gesso”, which as the name states, is made of rab- bit skin glue mixed with chalk and is very expensive, a small board 30 x 40 cm cost- ing around $150, but work done on it, ab- solutely glows. While showing slides of his beautiful works, Paul told us that even small works can take up to 8 months and larger works 3 years or more as it requires thousands of very thin layers done with brushes 000 or smaller and because the tempera dries instantly it is applied by crosshatching or stippling. He said it was similar to the work of Impressionist Seurat, where the colours blended optically. The work cannot be sped through & has to be treated with great respect & restraint to achieve the stunning quality of light & col- our. Varnishing the finished work is a must as cockroaches, or ‘God’s editors’ as Paul calls them, will devour it. One of his works left uncovered had sections eaten right back to the gesso, he was not impressed as it took months to repair! Paul also works in charcoal, pastel & wa- tercolour with equal dexterity and tells all to acquire good fundamental drawing skills. He insisted that anyone who works in wa- tercolour or gouache can easily learn to use & come to love tempera as he does. Paul concluded by inviting us to look at some works he brought along & then tell- ing us, not to listen to people to say your work is not good, but to listen to our heart about our work and to believe in all the work we do. What a truly inspiring man & an extraordinary artist. Thank you, Paul. August Guest Speaker Paul Miller by Linda Joyce

Right from his opening words, Paul’s passion for his chosen me-dium of tempera was clearly obvious.

After giving a brief history of Egg Tempura he went on to explain how in 2007, after many years of Dark expressionist work, he re-evaluated his whole approach to his art & his life. Having been diagnosed with a life-changing illness, he wanted to chal-lenge himself and face the future with a positive clear focus, not looking into the darkness but into the light & what better way than to return to his first love – Real-ism, in the difficult medium of Egg Tem-pera.

Paul describes it as a place of great mys-tery that requires good drawing skills, a clear understanding of colour, patience & a strong belief in what you can do. Tempura is made of powered pigment, egg yolk & water and is shown to its very best on a flat board with “rabbit skin glue gesso”, which as the name states, is made of rab-bit skin glue mixed with chalk and is very expensive, a small board 30 x 40 cm cost-ing around $150, but work done on it, ab-solutely glows. The work cannot be sped through & has to be treated with great respect & restraint to achieve the stunning quality of light & col-our. Varnishing the finished work is a must as cockroaches, or ‘God’s editors’ as Paul calls them, will devour it.

One of his works left uncovered had

sections eaten right back to the gesso, he was not impressed as it took months to repair!

Paul also works in charcoal, pastel & wa-tercolour with equal dexterity and tells all to acquire good fundamental drawing skills.

He insisted that anyone who works in wa-tercolour or gouache can easily learn to use & come to love tempera as he does.

Paul concluded by inviting us to look at some works he brought along & then tell-ing us, not to listen to people to say your work is not good, but to listen to our heart about our work and to believe in all the work we do. What a truly inspiring man & an extraordinary artist. Thank you, Paul.

Artists Resale Royalty SchemeThe Australian government has appointed Copyright Agency Limited (CAL) to manage the artists resale royalty scheme. Commercial resales of artworks must be reported; and a 5% royalty is payable on some re-sales. Key features of the scheme:

• it applies to resales of existing as well as new works;

• it applies to a range of original artworks, in-cluded limited edition prints authorised by the artist;

• it does not apply to a private sale from one indi-vidual to another;

• a royalty is not payable on the first change of hands after 9 June 2010, but all resales must be reported; nor is it payable on resales for under $1,000;

To be able to receive royalties, artists (or their benefici-aries) need to register. Registration for artists or benefi-ciaries is importany. To register www.resaleroyalty.org.au

Born in Indonesia, Josefia developed a passion for wa-tercolour following her first workshop at the Mitchell School of Creative Arts – Charles Sturt University, Bathurst in 1990 when she was a legal secretary. After becoming a full time student at the Julian Ashton Art School in mid 1996, she was awarded the Thea Proctor Scholarship in 1997. Diploma of Fine Art Julian Ashton Art School 1999. “ I love to create impressionistic landscapes, create a sense of distance, of mountains and rolling hills. Emotive landscapes are watercol-our’s strong suite”, she said. Josefia was invited to join the prestigious Australian Watercolour Institute in 2004 and has since exhibited many times with the Institute. In her short ar-tistic career, she has won more than 30 awards for oils and watercolours. She was a finalist in the 2006 Berkelouw Por-trait Prize, a finalist in the 2005 Shirley Hannan National Por-trait Awards and a Portia Geach Memorial Award finalist in 2004, 2003 and 2001. Josefia is a figure/portrait/landscape painter in oils and watercolour and teaches watercolour work-shops at the Julian Ashton Art School in and around Sydney.

From Judith White ...”Thanks again for having

me as a judge for the Ku-ring-gai Art show, I've really enjoyed my day. I was really im-

pressed not only with the standard of work, but the organisation.

"The Spirit of Ku-ring-gai Prize" I feel is a great inclusion. The range of personal ideas about

what this section is about, encourages the continued inclusion of this category in the

prize list. Best wishes to the Society.”

From Bernard Ollis ... “I concur with Judith,

rarely have I had the pleasure of working with such a professional and supportive organiza-

tion.

Congratulations to your team. I know these things don’t come together by osmosis!! “
