This attention to detail ensures that their focus is on solving the company’s challenges and outlining the criteria to move the company forward. They subsequently accomplish this through finding and introducing the right talent. If clients place contingent recruiters in a competitive situation, they usually only have time to obtain a cursory understanding of the role through a job description.

Q: Why commit to having an exclusive agreement with an Executive Search firm instead of multiple recruiters? A: It may seem logical that the more resources and recruiters you use, the better the result you should have. Actually the result is the exact opposite, using multiple search

professionals on a single position can cause more problems than it solves. The higher level, more experienced retained search professionals will not agree to engage in a free-for-all arrangement. As contingent recruiters are placed in competition with each other, their focus is on how fast they can provide as many resumes (CVs) that may turn into a placement, not necessarily on finding the highest quality talent that fits the stringent standards of the role you are seeking to fill.

Q: How does Retained Search change a company’s approach to the market? A: If a company pays an initial fee as part of a Retained Executive Search, money is made available to market the client. This then attracts candidates to the company and the role, rather than candidates just being approached directly by a recruiter. There are several key differences between retained and contingency recruiting.

A retained consultant is typically working exclusively on the search and is expected to evaluate all candidates being considered for the position. As a result, a retained consultant will never present a candidate to more than one client at a time. A contingent recruiter usually does not have an exclusive assignment, and may present attractive candidates to as many clients as possible. Contingency recruiters tend to be more specialized by industry and function. Retained search consultants also specialize however, because they are driven by original research for each engagement, are willing and able to apply that process across industries and functions— especially when circumstances indicate the possibility of recruiting from outside the client’s industry.
