India Infrastructure

Coastal ports

India has 12 major ports with steadily growing capacities. 95% of the international trade in India is handled via maritime transport – amongst which the port of Nhava Sheva/Mumbai accounts to the biggest international seaport in India. 61% of the total container shipped cargo has been handled through Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva). Second biggest container port is Chennai, followed by Kandla, Vishakapatnam, Kolkata & Halida. Every port can be reached via truck or train transport. For cargo movements, train transport via Concor is the most common one. ICD Dadri and ICD Tughlakabad, on the outskirts of New Delhi and biggest inland container depots in India, have daily trains to the seaports of Nhava

Sheva, Mundra Kandla and Pipavav.

Due to foreign and domestic investments, all major Indian seaports have projected modernization and expansion plans, some of them until 2012. Expansion and modernization of berths, deepening channels, state-of-the-art equipment and rail/road connectivity are just

a few of many on-going project.

Airports

With a yearly 20% growth rate on passenger and freight traffic in the aviation industry, India grows faster than many Asian giants or even strong economies, such as France and Australia. International freight traffic shows the remarkable growth rate of 12.6% per year, whereas passenger traffic even grows by 25%. According to official estimations, it is projected that by the year 2020, India will have 400 million air passengers flying each year

on domestic and international flights.

Today, India states 80 fully functional airports – aiming to achieve 500 operational airports within the next 12 years. The two major airports are New Delhi and Mumbai, followed by Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Stating the new development of government controlled and privately managed infrastructure in the aviation industry, New Delhi and Mumbai were recently privatized. In total, 28 airports in India have been opened

for foreign investment (FDI) in areas of operation and maintenance.

Road

With over 3.34 million km of roads, India states the world’s second largest road network.Likewise to the freight aviation and maritime industry, road freight traffic has grown by12% annually. There are still a lot of improvements to do, especially in terms of multi-and service lane expansion, all-weather roads and city connectivity for remote areas.Only 2% of the total road network are national highways. However, 70% of the totalfreight cargo are transported on roads. It is projected to connect the big metros Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata by the national toll expressway, on which the first part ofthis project is already in practice. The Delhi/Gurgaon Highway – as part of the NationalHighway Development Project, is one of India’s state-of-the-art road plan, with fullymodernized toll gates, 11 flyovers and overpasses and a service road for local and slow

moving traffic.

The Mumbai/Pune Expressway connects the industrial metro Pune to the seaport connected Mumbai. It is India’s first 6-lane, high-speed expressway on which the two

capitals can be reached within 2 hours.

Rail

With an extensive network of almost 110,000 km and 7,000 stations, the Indian railwaybelongs to the fourth largest rail network in the world. Moreover, with annually 17.7million passengers, it is the world’s second busiest railway after China in terms ofpassenger/km. Population growth and economic wealth contribute to the expansion ofthe existing network. It is projected that by 2011/2012, passenger and freight movementswill triple. The focus of improvement and modernization lies on dedicated freightcorridors, railway modernizations, high-speed passenger corridors and port connectivityprojects. Until now, two dedicated freight corridors are under construction: the Easterncorridor, connecting Ludhiana with Kolkata and the Western corridor, connecting

Mumbai with New Delhi.
