Kulin gears up for A Novel Event Late last year, mysterious beautifully wrapped packages began to arrive in the mailboxes of women in Kulin and
further afield.
The packages contained three books by well known Western Australian writers and were the forerunner to a unique
evening on March 1st in Kulin where women will attend an elegant event to discuss the books over a three course
meal.

As of the 1st of March we will be transitioning from a weekly edition to a fortnightly edition of the Kulin
Weekly Update and will shorten our name to The Kulin Update. During winter sports all sports clubs should
send in their notes as usual each week and a special sports update will be sent out on the weeks the Kulin
Update is not being run. The sports edition will contain no advertising, articles or other content, it will be in
simple newsletter form and can be collected from the CRC ONLY for hard copies, and will be emailed to the
same distribution list as the Kulin Update. The fortnightly Kulin Update will continue to be available from
IGA, via email and from the CRC
Once again I would like to invite all community groups, sporting clubs and businesses to send in there
schedule of events for our Kulin Community Calender. I know there is a lot happening in town but with out
the actual facts, dates and times it is extremely hard for me to collate into the calendar. Please , please if
you are the president, secretary or committee member of a group or club please let me know your schedule
of events, sessions, training, AGM’s, committee meetings and social functions. Kulin is buzzing town with
lots going on and this needs to be represented in our community calendar.

have a look at the great new display we have. In stock will be photos, books, clothing and jewellery to
name a few. If you would like to have your products on sale at the CRC please contact Marie Martin

Absolutely Uniquely Kulin
The CRC now provides a space for local talents to vend their wares. The opportunity has now been created for Ku-
linites to proudly support local talents, spread the word, share your money and support to all our local businesses and
producers, including here at the CRC. The CRC is becoming a champion for “Think Local, Shop Local”. Of course we will
still offer internet, Centrelink, and printing but now we also seek to provide a hub and hive of creative, inspiration,
technology and connectivity for all community members to access. There is a wealth of skill and knowledge “bursting
at the seams” in Kulin. We literarily have all the world can offer at our fingertips.
We will be stocking a range of high-end mixed-media pieces from Erin Bailey, eBEE Creations. If you are looking for a
gift that is uniquely Kulin then you are to look no further that the Kulin CRC. Erin’s pieces are whimsical, graceful and
delicate with a matrix of Kulin rock displayed in two of her pieces. Erin’s imagination knows no bounds and you are
assured that every piece is one-of-a-kind.
Additionally, Tam Davies is displaying a set of photographs for sale which capture the quirkiness, originality and su-
preme beauty of the Kulin landscape. Tams photos arrest the charm of Kulin into a moment that can be admired for an
infinity. For locals who adore this great Shire these still “moments in time” would be the perfect contemporary addi-
tion to your home or a thoughtful gift for a friend or relative to relish.
If you like reading fiction and like your books racy, saucy, thrilling and a bit naughty then look no further than the CRC.
We are now stocking a Kaye Edwards thriller trilogy which include what all good thrillers should; sex, murder and sus-
pense, not for the faint hearted. Kay also has a collection of Poetry and children's books which can be purchased here
and via EBooks and is currently writing a romance novel loosely based on her life as a young women growing up in
country WA.
But wait there is more……
Rynelle Smoker has delivered her delightful range of newborn to toddler clothing. Rynelle has succeeded in creating
both classic and edgy flairs to each of her products. Yet again Kulin has shaped a local talent who has succeeded in
making one-of-a-kind pieces for community and tourist consumers. The craftsmanship of each piece is bound with love
and diligence, with each stitch you can see and feel Rynelle’s dedication and passion to present items of kid-
sophistication and quality. This clothing range would make any parent proud to show off their little tot or totette.
And, finally, if you have an idea, please share with us. If you have a product you would like to sell, please ask us. If you
have a skill you would like to teach others, please let us promote you. If you like to shop please come and buy from us!

Kulin gears up for A Novel Event
With less than a month to go, and all the tickets sold out, the four volunteers behind the aptly-named ‘A Novel Event’
are gearing up to host 200 women from across regional Western Australia for an evening of laughs and literature.
Nicole Thompson, Deirdre Carroll, Janine Noble and Gen Whisson formed a committee in early 2013 with the aim to
bring a new and vibrant event to the town.
The concept began in March 2013, following a visit to the Dumbleyung ‘Diamonds in the Dust’ evening. It was an
inspiring event and got the ladies thinking about what they could do in their own town.
At the same time, the community was dealing with difficult seasonal conditions so a driving factor was bringing
about an event to look forward to which allowed women to connect in a special atmosphere.
They wanted to create a unique event for the local women of Kulin but it was also an opportunity to showcase their
town to others.
When they struck on the ‘novel’ concept, they decided to aim high - a glamorous evening for up to 200 women.
In a town which hosts the iconic Tin Horse Highway tourist attraction and the annual Kulin Bush Races, they had no
shortage of role models.
“Kulin is a town where people do just volunteer, get things done and the end results are fantastic - just look at the
bush races,” Janine said.
Their enthusiasm and drive was rewarded, with the authors and sponsors keen to come on board, along with
renowned Australian comedian Corrine Grant who will travel from Melbourne to host the event.
For the past few weeks, ticket holders have been busily reading their books which will form part of the evening’s
focus. The books include Fiona Palmer’s The Outback Heart, travel writer Stephen Scourfield’s As the River Runs and
the debut novel of Stephen Daisley, winner of the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Fiction in 2011, Traitor.
The authors will attend in person on the evening to discuss their work in an interactive, fun and relaxed atmosphere.
Gen said they had been overwhelmed with the generous support from sponsors and the authors.
“The feedback we’ve had from the authors is that they love community, grass roots events where they can talk to
people about their books and see the impact that many months of writing, often by themselves in a room on a
computer, has on people,” she said.
“In the case of Stephen Daisley, he knew Fiona lived in the area (Pingaring) and was keen to see where she was
from.”
The interest and demand for tickets was overwhelming, with most of the tickets sold within a couple of days of them
going on sale.
“You don’t have to belong to a book club to take part. Our aim is to get people together, get them talking and offer
them a vibrant and fun night out,” Gen said.
For Deirdre, it’s also a great way for women to build on connections with people they might see every day in town
and also with people from surrounding areas, something the four women took from the Dumbleyung event.
In the next few weeks, the four ladies will be making sure all the finishing touches for the event are organised. The
committee are very excited about putting on a lovely event for women in the community and one with a ‘woman’s’
touch – of course.
“We are so excited to welcome people to the event,” Nicole said. “Three beautifully wrapped books were just the
beginning and now the fun will follow. An evening where women can get together, have a laugh, a wine and talk
about the books which they have read over the past few months. Just like a giant book club but without having to
clean up afterwards!”

Get on Board for the Ultimate Regional Road Trip
Roe Tourism Association has harnessed the energy and vision of a group of volunteers to create a three minute film of our region. ‘Rock Out on the Pathways to Wave Rock’ will sell to the world what we already know – that our region has so many unique visitor experiences for people of all ages.
Historically, promotion strategies for the region have been conservative and in an effort to do something very different to promote the region, Roe Tourism decided to think outside the box. The result is a promotional film like nothing else that has ever been produced for regional WA destination marketing before.
The bold, modern, and energetic film centres around four friends who take a road trip along the ‘Pathways to Wave Rock’ drive trail. As they travel the region in their bright green Kombi, they can’t help but get caught up in the vibrancy and adventure of the place and meet a range other visitors and locals having a ‘blast’ across the region’s landscape and key attractions. This is all tied together using dance – the universal language and symbolism of fun!
‘Rock Out on the Pathways to Wave Rock’ aims to increase visitation to the region and generate wide spread promotion. Being such a unique concept, it is anticipated that it will generate a variety of media exposure and interest, not only for the region as a visitor destination but for the film itself.
The end result may be three minutes, however the logistics are enormous. Twelve months in the making; 8 twelve hour days of filming across the seven Roe Tourism Shires (Bruce Rock, Corrigin, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Narembeen and Quairading), 4000 kilometres travelled and 115 people (all volunteers) and one dog starring in the film. The technical aspects of filming and editing were taken care of by Perth based film company Black Cyclone in partnership with Roe Tourism. The song used in the film is ‘Rocket Ship by well-known Fremantle band San Cisco. It is a key element and success factor for the film - Fun, funky, vibrant and uniquely West Australian.
Roe Tourism will be launching the ground breaking promotional film at 6:30pm on Saturday 15th February at the new Kulin Town Centre Park. Once launched, the film will be promoted and shared online through social media until the end of July 2014.
The film has been made possible through the generous support and sponsorship of Tourism WA, Australia’s Golden Outback, Roe Tourism, the seven Roe Tourism Shires featured, San Cisco, Lake Grace Saltbush Inn, Wave Rock Hotel/Motel, Walkers Hill Vineyard, Michael Hardy’s Kombi and all the volunteers who starred in it.
The Premiere evening will be a great opportunity to celebrate the amazing experiences the region offers.

West Australian Blind Cricket Club Plays in Kulin
Venetian Blind Cricket v AOOB’s
On the 15th of February at 12pm the AOOB’s will verse the Venetian Blind Cricket Club. Greg Tyley the President of
the Kulin AOOB’s would like to invite the community to come along and support this event and watch the inspiring
skills of the Venetians as they challenge our local players.
This game will be played with some interesting changes to the rules such as the ball being bowled under arm and
having to land half way up the pitch with a bounce so the bell in the ball can be heard by the batsman at the other
end. The Venetians have 3 players who are completely blind with the other 8 players have differing levels of visual
impairment.
Greg said the skill of the players is something that must be seen to be believed and encouraged people to get down
a support the event with a gold coin donation. If you cant make it to the game then feel free to come along after
the game and have a drink with the teams at the Kulin Hotel. A big thanks to Megan and the Kulin Hotel for
donating the accommodation for the Venetians while they are in town.
If you think you would like to be on the Kulin challenging team, Greg would love to hear
from you or if you would like to find out more about the event please contact Greg
directly.
