Marcos Martinez Promotedto KUNM Program Director

I am honored and delighted toinform you that Marcos Martinezhas accepted our offer to be thenew Program Director of KUNMeffective February 3, 2003.

Since March of 1983, Marcoshas provided excellent anddedicated service to our commu-nity as KUNM News Director. His commitment to communityaccess, the mentoring of studentsand community members inter-ested in news and public affairs,multi-culturalism, local reporting, and community radiohave benefited KUNM and the listeners we serve fornearly two decades.

KUNM has been without the key position of ProgramDirector since the late 1980s. Community response toKUNM programming across the board has increased to alevel where this key position can be reinstated to theOperations Staff roster. Marcos comes to the position wellqualified to provide leadership and support in an era wherethe media landscape is constantly changing.

Marcos will continue to lead the News Departmentuntil an interim News Director is on board and a perma-nent News Director is hired. Because the ProgramDirector position was vacant for about 15 years, Marcoswill be working with the full KUNM community to developthe full scope of the Program Director’s position over thecoming months.

Congratulations, Marcos! Richard S. Towne, KUNM General Manager

Woman Who Glows in the DarkSunday, March 30, 11 a.m.

Elena Avila is a registerednurse with a master’s degree inpsychiatric nursing. She is alsoan author, an actress and agrandmother. And she is acurandera.

After working as a directorof nursing in a psychiatrichospital, she came to therealization that conventionalWestern medicine leaves outmuch of what makes up ahuman being — the soul, thepatient’s spiritual beliefs, thecomplexity of human experience, and the need for person-alized treatment. She turned to the healing tradition thatshe had grown up with in the barrios of El Paso. Shebegan studying curanderismo, a health care system withroots in the ancient civilization of the Aztecs.

It’s a medicine of the people which incorporates body, mind, emotions, soul and spirit. Elena apprenticed herself toa master curandero in Mexico who taught her to use herbs, massage, psychological counseling and ritual in the treat-ment of ailments both physical and emotional.

KUNM will air “Woman Who Glows in the Dark: AVisit with A New Mexico Curandera” on Sunday, March 30at 11 a.m. Elena Avila will offer a fresh perspective onphysical, emotional, and spiritual wellness as she takeslisteners on a journey into the world of curanderismo. She’lltalk about the history and culture of this ancient medicineand share colorful stories of her own personal journey tofind her identity as a healer as well as compelling stories ofpatients she has treated. Produced by Carol Boss.

Role of the KUNM Radio Boardin Development (Fundraising)

Last month’s Report to Listeners by General Man-ager Richard S. Towne brought this response fromKUNM Radio Board Development Committee ChairColeman Travelstead:

“Richard: In your ‘Report to the KUNM Community’in the February issue of Zounds, I do not believe you totallyexpressed the need for board members to be involved indevelopment activities for the station.

“At the board meeting in July of 2001, the presentboard unanimously approved the attached resolution:

RESOLUTIONUnanimously adopted July 10, 2001

KUNM Radio Board Development Policy

WHEREAS Public Radio Station KUNM is dependenton funding from the general public, corporate andorganization underwriting and special projects, and

WHEREAS without such funding KUNM would notbe able to fulfill its mission of providing unique pro-gramming to the people of Central and Northern NewMexico, now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED that all members of the KUNMRadio Board have a responsibility to be activelyinvolved in the development activities of the station.

“What you said in Zounds is true to the extent that onedoes not have to donate directly or to have rich friends tosolicit for contributions. However, that does not mean thatboard members are exempt from development activities. The development committee is an important committee ofthe board and welcomes members to participate in devel-opment planning activities. This committee recentlyassisted station and university professionals in raising$400,000 for station capital expenditures. The boardmembers were not solicited to contribute to this. Further-more, with two on-air fund drives each year, manning thephones is a development activity that takes nothing buttime.

“I submit that all board members should be willing to atleast give time to support the financial well being of thestation. As the resolution states, KUNM relies on fundingto keep on the air. It is its lifeblood and must be supportedby all board members in one way or another.” Coleman TravelsteadChair, KUNM Radio Board Development Committee

Saturday, March 16 a.m. New Dimensions, “Beyond Survival: Darwin’sLost Theory of Love,” with David Loye. Is there anotherside to Charles Darwin that we’ve never learned about? When we think of the 19th century naturalist and author of“The Origin of the Species,” we easily identify him with hislandmark theory of “natural selection,” which foreverchanged humankind’s view of itself, and shaped the eco-nomic, political and educational systems which today havean enormous hold on society. Yet, systems scientist andevolutionary theorist David Loye argues that Darwin wasmisunderstood and misinterpreted. After years of researchand rigorous examination of over 200 books written by andabout Darwin during the 20th century, Loye discovered twothings: less than a dozen people understood what Darwinwas writing about, and Darwin spoke far more about lovethan he did about selfishness and the survival of the fittest. He contends that “natural selection” was only the first halfof Darwin’s theory, and the completing half was what hecalls the “love system.” In Loye’s uphill battle to publish hisfindings on the “lost theory of love,” he was stunned by theextent to which society is enslaved by the “natural selection/dominator paradigm.” “The bias is against love. It’s thesame mechanism that tried to kill off Jesus and Buddha. You can’t go to war if you have a people imbued with theidea of love…” Tape #2935

Statement of ReasonsI witnessed the adverse impact the Telecommunications Actof 1996 had on Denver radio stations. When I moved toAlbuquerque 2.5 years ago, I was inspired by thiscommunity’s awareness and delighted by KUNM’s distinctand flavorful diversity. KUNM’s independent voice iscurrently challenged by possible deregulation of the air-waves by The Federal Communication Commission. Iwould like to offer my experience, voice, passion andresources to a community organization in which I stronglybelieve.

Stephen M. Adams, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchSteve Adams is a Senior Records Analyst with the NationalArchives and Records Administration. he was a Project Manager with the EPA in Dallas. Steveholds a Master of Library and Information Science Degreeand a Master of Education Degree in Human ResourceDevelopment and Adult Education.

Statement of ReasonsI strongly believe in the value of public radio. My wife and Ilisten to KUNM daily, and support the programming thatKUNM provides to New Mexico. I feel that it is vitallyimportant for a healthy community to have a radio stationthat broadcasts information of differing viewpoints in orderthat the members of the community are better informed andaware of events that impact on their lives.

Ellen Allanic, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am a 56-year-old woman resident of Albuquerque. Mypaid work has been as a court reporter for the past twenty-three years. I have lived and listened to public radio inManhattan; San Francisco; Los Angeles; Portland, Oregon;Maine; Connecticut and the South. I am a poet and amcurrently working on a novel about who decides what isreal.

Statement of ReasonsI want to serve on the board because I am interested in andconcerned about public awareness. I want to take an activerole in promoting quality information, dialog and thinking.Let’s help people realize what matters. And let’s continue todevelop the roots and tools of community, communicationand information in an approach towards exchange andbreaking isolation.

Ann Anthony, Santa FeBiographical SketchI have been active in several communities where I havelived. As Executive Director of a community action organi-zation in New York State, I spoke to community groups andworked with them to improve the opportunities for lowincome people. In Hawaii I was Program Coordinator forthe Arthritis Foundation, and planned educational programsfor people with arthritis. A frequent visitor to Santa Fe since1989, since last May I have made my home here.

Statement of ReasonsI am running for the Board of KUNM because I believe itis important for all citizens of New Mexico to have accessto news, music and cultural programs that will inform themof important issues and enrich their lives. My widespreadexperiences and interests equip me to support such pro-gramming. I am committed to continuing the fine programsthat KUNM offers and seeking new ways to better serveour listeners.

Isaac Benton, Jr., AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchBorn in Jackson, Tennessee, I grew up (from third gradethrough high school) in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. I attendedEmory University, and received Bachelors of Arts andArchitecture from Rhode Island School of Design. I movedhere in 1976 as a VISTA volunteer architect at UNM’sDesign and Planning Assistance Center, and have workedthroughout New Mexico. Since 1978, I have worked inAlbuquerque architectural firms. Since 1991 have managedmy own architectural office.

Statement of ReasonsI support KUNM presenting unique New Mexican “com-munity radio” more than “national public radio”. I amconcerned about the expensive duplication of NPR newsprogramming already carried by KNME. I am disturbed byNPR’s mainstream news and cheerleading for the Iraq war.I support the alternative news programming from Pacifica, including Democracy Now. I served on the Board of AIANew Mexico, including a term as President, and hope tocontribute my organizational skills.

Dave Berry, TijerasBiographical Sketch & Statement of ReasonsAs the profit-driven corporate media increasingly monopo-lize the means of mass communication, diversity of opinionis diminished, the First Amendment suffers and the impor-tance of nonprofit public media is correspondingly en-hanced. I am a small businessman-entrepreneur engaged innumerous public-interest projects, among them my no-holds-barred show Dave’s World (Public Access Channel 27). I

can and will add a dimension to the Board which it does notpresently enjoy.

Terri J. Blake, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI was born in the Midwest, raised in Southern California, and moved to Albuquerque in 1968, at the age of fourteen. Ihave two years of University education, majoring in Span-ish. Many of you know me as the widow of SpencerWalaitis, a long-time activist who died in 1996. I have re-married a wonderful man, and my daughter, Dawn, is nowten years old. I remain committed to diversity, peace, andsocial justice.

Statement of ReasonsI am educated politically and culturally by KUNM pro-grams. I am enriched by the music so creatively played bythe staff and volunteers. It is important to me to contributeto our communities and the world. I would like to be aKUNM radio board member to increase my involvementand contributions.

Reber Boult, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchSince I moved from Atlanta in 1981 I have lived inBernalillo and Los Duranes. I had been close to publicationsand absorbed the importance of community involvement. Iimmediately became a fan of KUNM. I became a lawyer in1964. My law experience includes business, military, Indian, and much civil rights and criminal defense. I’ve workedrepairing motorcycles, retailing consumer electronics, in theNavy, for the public defender, and defending occupants ofWounded Knee.

Statement of ReasonsKUNM is a jewel of New Mexico’s crown, indeed, a jewelfor all of Aztlan. It’s critically important to democracy forcommunities to have media with close programming ties tolocal people. This local matrix gives texture to the excellentnationally distributed programs KUNM also carries.Times change, resources change, needs change. But theneed for a community-involved alternative to the homog-enized media is constant.

Olive Bureker, AlbuquerqueBiographical Sketch41 years old. Grew up in Europe until the age of 20. Statement of ReasonsSince moving to ABQ KUNM has been a real contributionto my quality of life. True musical diversity, non-commercialprogramming and above all a forum for dissenting voicesand information not available elswhere on the radio dial (orpractically anywhere else). KUNM’s decision to carry twohours of Democracy Now! in the wake of 9/11 is indicativeof the stations commitment to keeping our communityinformed. I am nominating myself for the Board to give…

Michael A. Burger, TijerasBiographical SketchResident of Albuquerque area and KUNM listener since1984. Self employed as a successful worldwide recycler.College educated in Fine Arts at Ohio State University andGreen Party member. Due to my ability to make my ownschedule, my participation is assured.

Statement of ReasonsThe Albuquerque radio market is pathetic and KUNM hasslowly been coming into line. An almost smarmy relationshipwith NPR effects broadcast diversity and strains funding forgrass roots programs. More and more, issues are being viewedfrom a narrow perspective reflecting a corporate model.Weekend programming could be more music in contrast tomore talk. In other words, more co-op less psy-op!

Scott Cameron, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am a public interest lawyer who is passionate about socialjustice, human rights, and civil rights issues. I moved toAlbuquerque in 1993. Since then I have served on a non-profit board, worked with abused children, fought for therights of homeless people, worked at an environmentalorganization, and been a Guardian Ad Litem. I am currentlya staff attorney for the New Mexico Center on Law &Poverty.

Statement of ReasonsI feel that public radio is vital to a healthy and vigorousdemocracy. With the increasing tide of corporate controlover and consolidation of media outlets, public radio repre-sents one of our last sources for unbiased news, music, andinformation that is reflective of the community. I want toserve on the Board to act as a voice for our community, uphold these ideals, and ensure that public radio stays trueto it’s name: public.

John Carangelo, AlbuquerqueBiographical Sketch & Statement of ReasonsI am a blue-collar worker. My perception is that thosefurthest away from production return the least and gain the

most from their society. What they are very good at iscontrolling the media to reinforce their position. KUNM,because of its diverse and local content, has resisted beingused solely as the master culture’s mouthpiece. KUNM isthe best station on the dial. I would like to be associatedwith the best. Still, KUNM can do more. My agenda is topress for more diverse programming even at the expense ofthe ‘tall white man from the East’ NPR news. One doesn’tknow what change can be effected until one sees anorganization’s inner workings. Getting on the board wouldprovide me with that view. A view I would like to share withinterested listeners, if you would consider me for the board.

Nicole Deutsch, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchIn a nutshell, I am a 30-something mom with a passion forgood music, compelling commentary and social justicethrough political activism. For seven years I was an editorand reporter in Tampa, before leaving to backpack aroundthe world with my husband. Since coming to Albuquerque in2000, I have devoted most of my time to our daughter,London. In my “spare time,” I edit our congregation’snewsletter and manage at The Artichoke Cafe.

Statement of ReasonsI got hooked on community radio in Tampa. It was there, listening to alternative artists like Iris DeMent and speakerslike Noam Chomsky and Helen Caldicott, I realized what avital cultural and educational resource community radioprovides. Especially given the recent consolidation of thecommercial airwaves, the importance of KUNM’s pro-gramming variety and public access cannot be understated.True democracy requires a free, independent media.KUNM provides that, and I think that’s worth preserving.

Denis Doyon, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchDirector of Media Production for the New Mexico MediaLiteracy Project, producing CD-ROMs and videos thatteach kids and adults how to become more critical consum-ers of media messages, particularly advertising. Previousmedia experience: noncommercial radio DJ, editor of acommunity newspaper, news editor at an international newsagency, independent film & videomaker. I have been staff, volunteer and board member of several nonprofit organiza-tions, with fundraising, communication, administrative andgroup process skills.

Statement of ReasonsAs huge media corporations expand their reach, culture ishomogenized, alternative voices are silenced, and democ-racy itself is threatened. Protecting and expanding indepen-dent, noncommercial media is essential. I’ve been an avid

Page 18: KUNM Radio Board ELECTION BALLOT · inform you that Marcos Martinez has accepted our offer to be the new Program Director of KUNM effective February 3, 2003. Since March of 1983,

17

public radio listener for over 20 years, and KUNM is thebest! I want to help KUNM sink deeper roots in thecommunity, link up with other independent media makersand reach more people across New Mexico, especiallyyouth, our hope for the future.

Theresa Dunn, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am a ten year resident of Albuquerque and avid KUNMlistener. I am a former transportation consultant, currentfull-time mother and part-time massage therapist, and futurepublic interest lawyer.

Statement of ReasonsI am running for the KUNM Board of Directors to ensurethat the station continues to deliver the current excellentprogramming to the community. I strongly support the publicaffairs programming, including Amy Goodman’s “Democ-racy Now”. In addition, I strongly support continuedprogramming for groups that are denied a voice on thecommercial radio stations. I feel that it is this type ofprogramming that makes KUNM the unique station that itis.

Adam Fischler, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchBefore moving to Albuquerque in April, 2000, I lived inFlorida (St. Petersburg/Clearwater) for 16 years. I receiveda Bachelor’s degree in political science from EckerdCollege in St. Petersburg in 1989. I have worked at LaMontanita Coop for nearly three years, for most of that as adepartment manager. I also serve as an elected representa-tive on the employee grievance committee there.

Statement of ReasonsI believe that the strongest political statement we can makeas individuals is how we live on a daily basis. The busi-nesses we support, the foods we eat, where we work, areall important decisions. I see KUNM as a positive force inthis community as well as a vital resource. I think that myexperience and insight would enable me to make a con-structive contribution to the operation of the radio station.

Jennifer Gardner, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI’ve lived in Albuquerque for 11 years. I worked in corpo-rate America as a computer programmer until I simplycouldn’t take it anymore. Since then I’ve been a Co-opemployee, a bookkeeper and a welder. My free time isspent on my Neighborhood Association, a mentoringprogram, Planned Parenthood, and a handful of communityorganizations I can’t say no to. My delights in life includegrowing my own food, hiking, and getting plenty of sleep.

Statement of ReasonsWhy commit my time and skills to KUNM? Because thecorporate media is lying to me and I’m sick of it, becausefree speech isn’t safe these days, because HarlanMcKasoto and Amy Goodman are today’s heroes. Becauseone afternoon freeform blew my mind, and that was good. Iwant to be on the board because I need public radio, weneed public radio, and I’ll work to keep it alive and thriving.

Mark J. Gilboard, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchMark J. Gilboard started his active interest in non-commer-cial radio in 1989, as a college radio DJ and assistantprogram director of WRBC, at Bates College, in Lewiston,Maine. He received a Master’s Degree in Communicationfrom UNM in 1995 and has been an avid listener andmember of the KUNM community for the last 10 years. Hehas taught communication and media courses at both UNMand TV-I. He is currently employed by Nielsen TV Ratings.

Statement of ReasonsMy goal as Board Member would be to ensure that theoverall excellence continues at KUNM, and to be anadvocate for maintaining its unique and important place onthe dial. I possess the time and energy necessary to workdiligently to keep KUNM on target as the great communityresource that it is. I understand the financial limitations ofcommunity-supported media and will work very hard to helpKUNM maintain its high standards.

Marvin H. Gladstone, AlbuquerqueBiographical Sketch & Statement of ReasonsThe recent history of Public Radio, specifically the Pacificaproblems, foretell a continuing struggle to maintain thisimportant medium as free as possible of commercialestablishmentarian influence. An important part of my 41years at the bar and of my service on the Board of PublicAccess Channel 27 has been enhancing the integrity of theFirst Amendment from persistent assaults by those whowould sacrifice its protections. Preserve your electronicsoapboxes. Vote for me.

Patti J. Gladstone, AlbuquerqueBiographical Sketch & Statement of ReasonsA practicing accountant by vocation I am, by avocation, anunreconstructed protagonist of increasingly-endangered freespeech. I am the producer of POL1T1CAL FRONT1ERS,(Public Access Channel 27’s provocative forum for dissi-dents); the organizer of (among other First Amendmenttributes) the now-annual APS system-wide FREEDOM OFSPEECH DAY ESSAY COMPET1T10N, etc. I can andwill assist KUNM, our publicly- sponsored radio medium, asour democratic society’s antidote to the monopolizedcommercial propaganda machine.

David Gomez, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchDavid Gomez is an avid user and producer of independentmedia. His self-published book, We Will Rise, is enjoyingimpressive sales without a distribution deal. Independentfilms and musical recordings are also included in his reper-toire. The mainstay of Gomez’s independent media is anewsletter of the Mexika Eagle Society, an organization hefounded in 1996. The newsletter is funded primarily throughdonations. Gomez is a nationally-known presenter atMEChA and other conferences and an Aztec dancer.

Statement of ReasonsI believe in the importance of community radio and indepen-dent media of all forms. Community radio provides voice topeople of many different backgrounds, opinions and geogra-phy. I want to be on the board of KUNM to provide supportfor independent media and to protect community radio as aviable alternative to the mainstream press. I know what ittakes to keep an all-volunteer organization alive and welland want to see KUNM prosper.

Cheryl Gooding, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am a 48 year old woman who has spent my adult workinglife advocating, organizing and educating on issues of socialjustice in a variety of settings and types of jobs: as a unionorganizer and staff person; as a teacher at the universitylevel; as a community educator; and as a consultant fornonprofit organizations. I have lived in Albuquerque for thepast 3.5 years.

Statement of ReasonsI want to serve on the KUNM Advisory Board in order tosupport and strengthen the station (I have been a supportingmember of KUNM for the past two years). I believepublicly supported radio and television is essential for realpublic education and democratic participation. Access toinformation and diverse views becomes even more impor-tant during times of increasing constraints on information, and an atmosphere that discourages dissent.

Leota Harriman, EdgewoodBiographical SketchI started working as an activist in 1987 as a work-study forSouthwest Research and Information Center (thank you’sto Don and everybody), have worked for NMPIRG,NMCVA, el Comite en Apoyo al Zapatismo y al PuebloMexicano, been co-chair of the Torrance County Greensand a delegate to the Green Council of New Mexico’sGreen party, as well as working on the occasional politicalcampaign. I work now as writer, peace activist, and mom.

Statement of ReasonsKUNM stands out on the dial as something different fromcommercial radio. It is a voice for the people in the commu-nity, who actively use it. It has cutting-edge shows likeNative America Calling. It is what I want when I turn onthe radio. I believe it is my responsibility as a citizen toactively promote an alternative to the merciless commer-cialization of life which so profoundly affects our societyand the world.

James V. Harshman, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am a sixty four year old electrical engineer, BSEEMarquette University 1966, MSEE University of SouthernCalifornia 1968 (Hughes Fellow). I have over 30 years inthe communications industry with Harris CorporationSatellite Communications, California Microwave andHughes Direct TV. Duties have ranged from projectengineering to Chief Engineer. I currently work as aconsultant, providing a range of engineering services to thedata communications and networking deployment industry.

Statement of ReasonsFrom the early days of WBUR in Boston in the 1960’s Ihave been a proponent and supporter of Public Radio andthe exceptional programming it provides. Ruth Imber, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am a retired librarian, and an avid reader and KUNMlistener. Before coming to Albuquerque in 1991 I was aPublic Library Director in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.I also enjoyed being a partner in a coffeehouse, a venue forfolk music and jazz. As a community activist I have workedwith the Albuquerque Friends for the Library, CongregationNahalat Shalom, Futures for Children, and other organiza-tions devoted to peace, justice, and environmental causes.

Statement of ReasonsAs a librarian, I’ve worked to provide my community withreliable information and quality entertainment. It sounds alot like public radio to me. Public radio’s role is even moreimportant in this period of conglomeration in the commercialmedia. Concentration has resulted in far less coverage ofnews and public interest programming, and less localism. Ibelieve my background and dedication will be helpful inmaintaining and advancing KUNM’s role as a communityvoice.

Anne Kass, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchBorn and raised on a farm in South Dakota 57 years ago.Resident of New Mexico since 1969.Degree in journalism and communication, UNM, 1974.Law degree, UNM, 1977. Family law judge 1985-2002Married with two cats.

Statement of ReasonsI only recently became conscious of the difference betweenpublic and community radio. With much of the major medianow owned by as few as six large corporations, and publicradio funding likely to be discontinued, community radioremains the sole source of diverse information. I wouldwork to keep that diversity alive and well.

Dr. John Konopak, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchB.A., M.J., Ph.D.Life-long ‘Radio Addict,’ and 25 year NPR Critic/Listener.‘63-64: KTRC-AM (Santa Fe’s first Rock’n’Roll DJ)‘66-67: CFN-Z (Zweibrucken, Ger.—announcer aka ShadeDavid Lane)‘67-68: WCVU-AM (Portsmouth, VA—announcer, aka:Johnny Pace)‘68-70: UNM-PIO (Jesse Price, Supervisor)‘69-71: KPAR-AM (Frank Regan, Boss—announcer, aka,Edward Bear)‘70-72: General Assignment Critic, “EI Independiente”(Mark Acuff, Ed.)‘74-77: Arts Editor, ‘Santa Fe Reporter’ (Dick McCord,Ed./Pub.) I taught Journalism @ LSU, and was chair…

Statement of ReasonsI hope you will elect me to a position from which I canendeavor to hold NPR’s collective (cold) feet to the fire ofpublic outrage about their feckless, cautious coverage of theegregious abuses of public power and authority by theBushista junta, its reckless march to Empire, and theconcomitant descent into fascism of the institutions of publicgovernance.

Anne Manning, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchBorn and educated in England, naturalized as a US citizen in1976, I moved to Albuquerque in 1990 with my husband, children and the family business. I had worked as a profes-sional librarian in academic libraries in Georgia for 18 yearsbefore joining my husband’s computer business as Adminis-trator. I am active with First Unitarian Church, sing with theEnchanted Mesa Show Chorus and work with the localpeace movement.

Statement of ReasonsEvery radio in my possession is tuned to 89.9FM! Withoutpublic radio news - especially Democracy Now - I wouldfeel completely cut off from the world. I believe strongly inproviding a community-based choice for radio listeners. Thewide range of KUNM’s programming, although not perfect, goes a long way towards that. The mix of national (ATC,ME, The Bioneers) and local programming (Women’sFocus, Native America Calling) expands my awareness ofother people’s interests.

Donald L. Mayfield, AlbuquerqueBiographical SketchI am nominating myself for this position. I am a 65 year o1ddivorced male, father of two men and two women, andgrandfather to 3 girls and 3 boys. I am retired with lessincome than my expenses and inadequate retirementsavings. I have a Master’s Degree in Public Health with aspecialty in Radiological Health. I am a 33 year resident ofNew Mexico.

Statement of ReasonsI am motivated toward continued cultivation of awarenessand sensitivity to cultural diversity, as well as appreciationfor it. I am motivated to maintaining KUNM’s progresstoward worthwhile community objectives. I have beenlistening to KUNM for roughly 30 years. My ability toprovide financial support has been severely restricted forroughly 19 years. Therefore I would also like to serve in lieuof payment.

Statement of ReasonsAn open and honest media is crucial to a free and demo-cratic society. In a nation seemingly controlled by corporateinterests public radio serves this function and must beprotected. KUNM is a community resource and its Boardhas an unqualified obligation to preserve its mission.

My careergoal is management of a non-profit organization where Ican make a comfortable living while doing what I love -working for a good cause.

Statement of ReasonsServing on the Radio Board is my way of ensuringKUNM’s continuing solid commitment to excellence. Ipersonally enjoy listening to KUNM public radio and findKUNM news reports integral to my lifestyle. These reportsare often my primary source for solid information on worldevents. This application for nomination is my public demon-stration of intention to help keep the workings behind theradio signal going as smoothly as their program of excel-lence.

I’m alesbian, I sing with the NM Women’s Chorus, and I live inthe East Mountains. I’ve always listened to and supportedKUNM.

Statement of ReasonsKUNM plays a unique and vital role in northern NewMexico. For people who love the richness and diversity ofour community and our world, KUNM is a treasure. But ina time when the information essential to our survival isn’tavailable from commercial media, KUNM is simply indis-pensable. I want to do my part to ensure that KUNMcontinues serving our community by providing cultural andpolitical programming to help us make informed choices.

Statement of ReasonsI believe that my experience both at home and abroad givesme the global perspective that KUNM and public radiostations throughout the country are dedicated to providing.Public radio stations are essential to the maintenance of ouralready fragile democracy. Access to accurate and intellec-tually stimulating art and information is the key to a dynamicpolitical and cultural environment, and I would be honored tohave the opportunity to further that goal.
