Kuranda Scenic Railway is an iconic rail journey that meanders its way through the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park, to the mountain village of Kuranda.

Enjoy breathtaking scenery, towering waterfalls and deep ravines as the train winds its way through 15 hand-made tunnels and over 55 bridges. Hear about the incredible history, the flora and fauna, and points of interest with audio commentary along the way.

This Heritage-listed railway line originally opened in 1891 and is an engineering feat that has stood the test of time.

Up to 1,500 men at a time, armed only with hand picks, shovels and dynamite, carved through mountainous and unforgiving landscape to construct the 33 kilometres of track.

The historic carriages of Kuranda Scenic Railway are hauled by dedicated 1720 class locomotives adorned in Buda-dji colours. The train can be boarded at Cairns Railway Station or Freshwater Railway Station for morning departures, and from Kuranda Railway Station for afternoon departures. The journey takes approximately two hours each way.
