2

Lewin’s Three-Step Change Model

According to this theory effective changes occur by unfreezing the current situation, moving to a desired condition and then refreezing the system so that it remains in the desired state.

Lewin’s Three-Step Change ModelUnfreezingThe first part of the change process, in which the agent produces disequilibrium between the driving and restraining forces.

RefreezingThe latter part of the change process, in which systems and conditions are introduced that reinforce and maintain the desired behavior.

Driving ForcesForces that direct behavior away from the status quo.

Restraining ForcesForces that hinder movement from the existing equilibrium.

UnfreezingUnfreezing involves producing equilibrium

between the driving and restraining force. It occurs when the driving force is stronger

than the restraining forceIt happens by making the driving force

stronger, weakening or removing the restraining force or doing a combination of both.
