Kuwait National English School English Course Outline Year 2 2017/2018 Year Overview During this academic year, Year 2 students will use a thematic approach which will be integrated to their reading and writing. They will incorporate the following readings: Fiction and non-fiction units. These units will provide the content and purpose for speaking, listening, reading and writing. Explanation texts and poetry. Work on presentational skills and will be on going throughout the term. The basic skills of vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation and sentence construction will be taught in the Literacy scheme of work combined with the stories read for each unit. New vocabulary words pertaining to the stories read will be discussed and taught. A weekly spelling test will be given every Thursday. Comprehension activities which collectively seek to elicit literal, inferential, deductive and evaluative responses will be done every week. Writing activities, that will put into practice the different writing styles learned. In addition to that which is set out below, students will practice handwriting each week with an emphasis on correct letter formation. Students will have a library session every week where they will be able to choose a book appropriate to their level. Students should spend at least ten minutes reading every evening to practice fluency and comprehension skills. Class Rules: Students, please remember: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get your homework assignment from a classmate and submit it when you return. Homework left at home will be considered as not being done. If you miss a test or deadline on an assignment, you will receive 0% unless you can provide a letter from a medical doctor to show you were not able to attend. It is your responsibility to come to class with the necessary books and other items- they are of no value to you sitting at home. You are to use washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks. You are not to be asking to leave class to use the washroom except in ‘emergencies’ that should not occur often.

Year Overview

During this academic year, Year 2 students will use a thematic approach which will be integrated to their reading and writing. They will incorporate the following readings:

Fiction and non-fiction units. These units will provide the content and purpose for speaking, listening, reading and writing.

CHN to complete ‘About me’ booklet- PSHE link.
