South Lyon, using the arm of Mike Skatzka and the legs of Steve Morse, complied 387 yards in total offense en route to its third itralflt one-sided victory a 414 decision which spoiled Lakeland’s Homecoming festivities. Skataka completed eight of 15 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. The senior quarterback was most dominant late In the first half when he connected with fair consecutive aerials two for touchdowns during a two-minute span. Skatzka and his favorite target, wide receiver Mark Hoorn, are atop the KVC in their respective categories as well. Skataka has throw for St yards, while Hewn has ii receptions worth 461 yards. Versus Lakeland, Boom caught five passes for 1% yards and two touchdowns. “Our defense actually played pretty well, especially during the first half,” Lakeland coach Bill Mohr Mid. “But with ow- offense struggling, the defense is forced into some real tough situations. “South Lyon is a strong football team,” he added. “I was impressed with them on both sides of the ball. They can hurt you a lot of ways with their offense . .and their defense, well, they sure shut us down.” Lakeland finished with 110 yards in total offense, but managed only 57 against South Lyon’s first-team defense which has not allowed a point since the second week of the season. The Eagles failed to pick up a first down in the first half. Afterward, Lions coach Bob Scheloske, whose club im- proved to 5-0 overall and 34 in the KVC, praised just abeut everyone. He mentioned improvement within the effensive line, defensive intensity and a decrease in cost- lymistakes. He also was pleased with his team’s mental approsch toward a rare afternoon game against a winless oppo- neat. “The kids came in with a good attitude,” be said. “They’ve taken to heart the idea of being better every week. We were not playing a team the caliber of Bay Ci- ty John Glenn (South Lyon’s first victim), but the kids were determined to be at the highest level possible.” The Lions took control of Saturday’s game with an ear- ly touchdown drive, covering 65 yards in 11 plays. Craig Weeks capped the march with a two-yard plunge. The score remained the same until early in the second quarter. Following a Lakeland fumble, South Lyon mov- S 34 yards In five plays with Weeks again going In from two yards out. The Lions then iced the game late In the second stanza as SUtiks fired scoring strikes to Hoorn and Mike Rink. By Matt Seldi When the South Lyon girls’ basket- ball team hosted Lw-i Montante and the Milford Redskins last night, it was hoping to end a pattern which has plagued the local squad in 1988. Beginning with a 72-38 season- opening victory over SalIne and con- tinuing with a 53-36 win at Hartland last Thursday, the Lions have alter- nated wins and losses en route to records of 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Kensington Valley Conference. “We’re hopthg the pattern doesn’t hold tnie,” said Lions coach Ron Shanks Sunday afternoon in reference to last night’s contest, which was played after the Herald’s deadline. “The whole thing Is kind of in KVC out with a win.” The victory improved South Lyon’s chances In the KVC race, especially since Milford is one of the three teams that placed ahead of the Lions at the pre-season league meet. South Lyon can make up more ground this week In matches against Howell and Novi. The post- season league gathering is scheduled for next Tuesday at Huran Meadows Golf Course in Brighton. Milford, on the other hand, fell to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the KVC. The dual loss wu the school’s first since 1986, stopping an impressive winning strflk at 15. “We’re still In it, though,” Koresky mentioned. ±~Actualli~~.~we can control ow own destiny. We can win theleague with a strong finish.” Earlier in the week, both South Lyon and Milford competed in the Oakland County Meet at Pontiac Country Club. The Lions placed 13th out of 44 teams with 340 strokes, while the Redskins were 29th with 363. Beasley topped South Lyon with-in 18-hole score -04-77, good for eighth P1ac&OYeraLanLa&IPr~ dividual medal. Jeremy Mueller’s 85 led the way for Milford. One day later, the Lions whipped Hartland, 156- 168, at Rutland Glen G0U Coune. That’s my parking space. You cam put thtt TransAm somewhere else. . It really is a Homecom- ing game. Wow, I don’t think schools had this (empty seats, lack of enthusiasm) in mind when they came up with the idea. . Will someone please help those two Lakeland cheerleaders as they struggle to raise the wind-blown flag? . Maybe it’s my imagination, but the South Lyon spec- tators are making more pre-game noise than the Lakeland fans. This is Lakeland High School, right? - . This is getting to be too much. The huge Lakeland band Is silent as the Eagles take the field a few minutes before kickoff. As for the Lions, they are greeted by a standingovation and a handful of traveling horns. - I Does the golf team practice chip shots on this foot- ball field, or what? I’ve never seen so many divots. . South Lyon running back Steve Morse (who rushed for 12 yards on the game’s first play from scrimmage) seems to enjoy contact more than most high school players. Maybe we should call him Rambo. . South Lyon (leading 7-~ early in the second quarter) looks kind of flat today. If it starts raining and Lakeland avoids the costly mistakes, an upset could be in the mak- ing. . So much for that thought (as Lakeland fumbles a punt on Its own 34 yard line and then is whistled for a per- sonal foul two plays later). . What’s wrong with South Lyon quarterback Mike Skatzka? After throwing the ball with such zip last week, he has yet to unload a pretty spiral. . Sorry, Mike. I didn’t mean to upset you. Those four consecutive completions (good for 50 yards and two touchdowns) at the end of the first half really were un- necessary. S Eagles quarterback Ed Cheeseman, with the way he maneuvers side to side while under center, reminds me of former University of Michigan signalcaller Mark Wangler. I Who Is that guy on the public address system? Color- ful commentary is one thing, but attempts at humor with the home team trailing by 40 points are another. . For the second time in four seasons, South Lyon may possess the best player in the Kensington Valley Con- ference. Fullback/linebacker Dave lafolla was the main man in 1985, while wide receiver/safety Mark HOOn’ is following in his footsteps this fall. . Football fans can take their pick in two weeks. On one hand, you have South Lyon traveling to Novi for what could be a battle of unbeatens. But you also have Milford tangling with Lakeland In a possible meeting of the KVC winless. . Walt a minute. I forgot about South Lyon’s Homecoming game with Hartland this week. Now that should be quite a game, especially since Hartland et- barrassed the Lions, 21-0, last season. . Two things are certain, though, as SoUth Lyon and Hartland both 3-0 in the KVC prepare for war. First of all, the Lions will prevail in rather easy fashion. Secondly, the atmosphere at South Lyon High School will be much more intense than the one at Lakeland last weekend. . Now back to those red-hot Novi Wildcats, who have won 20 straIght regular season games- Coach Jo~a Osborne has put together another explosive offense and stingy defense. Their 27-0 victory at Brighton Friday ha South Lyon followers wonderag if the Lions can contend “We should have won the Novi game,’’ Lions coach Heinz ~Donaubauer said. “We scored for the rtsg~r:iimnnrsw ~mlssedçpenalty shot with a minute left in thi game. “To be honest, I think my team is better than Novi’s team. On Thursday, South Lyon jumped Jenny Shanks (23) iooka to pass. 53-36 out to an early lead and then held off Hartland which cut a 14-point deficit to eight at halftime. The Lions’ biggest lead was ~ late in the final period. “The key was our start,” Shanks said. “It was the first time In a long time that we’ve been ahead early in a game. We hit some shots and were able toget into our press.” South Lyon outscored the Eagles, 15-4, in the first quarter. Holman led the charge with seven of her game- high - 15 points, while Sheila Hatton had five. ‘The South Lyon backcourt also per- formed well. Shanks recorded eight points, four assists and four steals, while Cheryl Kutamo had six points, five assists and six steals. Center Becki Cobb added nine re- bounds for the Lions. By Matt SeldiWhen the South Lyon girls’ basket-

ball team hostedLw-i Montante andthe Milford Redskins last night, itwas hoping to end a pattern whichhasplaguedthe local squad in 1988.

Beginning with a 72-38 season-openingvictory over SalIneand con-tinuing with a 53-36 win at Hartlandlast Thursday, the Lions have alter-nated wins and losses en route torecordsof 5-4 overall and 2-1 in theKensingtonValley Conference.

“We’re hopthg the pattern doesn’thold tnie,” said Lions coach RonShanks Sunday afternoon inreference to last night’s contest, which was played after the Herald’sdeadline.

“The whole thing Is kind of

in KVCout with a win.”

The victory improved South Lyon’s chancesInthe KVC race, especiallysince Milford is one ofthe three teamsthat placed aheadof the Lions atthepre-seasonleaguemeet.

SouthLyon canmakeup more groundthis weekIn matches against Howell and Novi. The post-seasonleague gathering is scheduledfor nextTuesday at Huran Meadows Golf Course inBrighton.

. Will someone please help those two Lakelandcheerleaders as they struggle to raise the wind-blownflag?

. Maybeit’s my imagination, but theSouthLyon spec-tators are making more pre-game noise than theLakeland fans. This isLakeland High School, right? -

. This is getting to be too much. The huge Lakelandband Is silent asthe Eaglestake the field a few minutesbefore kickoff. As for the Lions, they are greetedby astandingovation and ahandful of traveling horns. -

I Doesthe golf team practice chip shotson this foot-ball field, or what?I’ve neverseensomany divots.

. South Lyon running back SteveMorse (who rushedfor 12 yards on the game’sfirst play from scrimmage)seemsto enjoy contact more than most high schoolplayers.Maybeweshouldcall him Rambo.

. SouthLyon (leading7-~early in thesecondquarter)lookskind of flat today. If it starts raining and Lakelandavoidsthe costlymistakes,an upset could be in themak-ing.

. So much for that thought (as Lakeland fumbles apunt on Its own34 yard line and then iswhistled for a per-sonalfoul twoplays later).

. What’s wrong with South Lyon quarterback MikeSkatzka? After throwing theball with suchzip last week, hehasyet to unload apretty spiral.

. Sorry, Mike. I didn’t mean to upset you. Those fourconsecutivecompletions(good for 50 yardsand twotouchdowns) at the end of the first half really wereun-necessary.

. For the secondtime in four seasons,South Lyon maypossessthe best player in the Kensington Valley Con-ference.Fullback/linebackerDavelafolla wasthemainman in 1985, while wide receiver/safetyMark HOOn’ isfollowing in his footstepsthis fall.

. Football fans can take their pick in two weeks. Onone hand, you have South Lyon traveling to Novi forwhat could be a battle of unbeatens. But you also haveMilford tangling with Lakeland In a possiblemeeting ofthe KVC winless.

. Walt a minute. I forgot about South Lyon’sHomecominggamewith Hartlandthis week. Now thatshould be quite a game, especially since Hartland et-barrassedthe Lions, 21-0, last season.

. Two things arecertain, though, as SoUth Lyon andHartland — both3-0 in the KVC — prepare for war. Firstof all, the Lions will prevail in rather easy fashion.Secondly, the atmosphereat South Lyon High Schoolwillbe much more intense than the one at Lakelandlastweekend.
