In badminton, a serve is far easier to perform than a smash shot. Explain, why this is the case. Provide detailed information regarding the differences that exist in execution. Use skill classification terminology to help you answer.

In a practical context, you have looked at the range of information which is processed by a badminton player when serving, (close skill) and you now understand the information processing system.

Look at the picture below of the basketball player dribbling. An excellent example of an open skill.

What information do you think this player is having to process to be successful?

Results from initial data (Stroke Repertoire OS)

What can we learn from this data?

What does the data reveal about your stroke play?

Can you identify the strengths in your performance?

Are there any problems you can deduce from the data recorded?

When structuring your answer;

1. Be sure to look closely at the observation schedule before putting pen to paper. Understand what you see.

2. Always explain where the results are from i.e. the observation schedule.3. Give your strengths/weaknesses together (Group) strengths first (Be

positive.)4. Always justify your answer by giving figures (Objective).5. Justify your answer by providing subjective views to reinforce findings

(feeling).6. Never simply say “my net shot is good” (Justify).

Example of how to provide depth in discussion

The observation schedule highlighted that my net shot was very effective with 87% successfully placed. This was because I was quick and agile on my feet getting into position early, taking the shuttle at the top of the net. Good hip flexibility gave me excellent reach in my lunge to the net. By adjusting the angle of my racket I was able to alter the flight path of the shuttle at the last minute, sending my opponent a real problem. Another strength……………….

EXAMPLE

Skill: Overhead Clear Stage of Learning: Practice stage (specific to needs and faults to prevent aimless training)

Aim is to consolidate existing skill and improve consistency and accuracy of clear

Main Faults: Slow movement to the back of the courtLack of transfer of weight during the action phaseSlow recovery to base

Practice/Drill Description of practice Target Set Why method was used Feedback provided

Repetition drillI started at base and my partner fed high shuttles to the back of the court. After each shot I had to run quickly forwards to touch the service line.(P.A.R)

10 out 20 feeds to the 1st tramline. 30secs extra game time at the end of the session for everyone which reached the target)

3 sets

Helps to identify faults and correct faults

Through repetition you groove the action and gain muscle memory

Plenty of visual feedback assists progress (measure success)

Develops a feel for action

Few external pressures

Whilst the feeder fed the shuttle to the back of the court an observer gave me immediate verbal feedback on each clear. Plenty of time between feeds to eliminate pressure.

Principle: Work to Rest Ratio

When training to develop my OHC it was essential that I considered my work to rest ratio. This ensured I continued to work on skills and not fitness. I was therefore able to maintain focus and motivation through sharp, distributed practice, preventing skill deterioration due to fatigue. Example: In my repetition drill, I did 30 feeds and then rested fully before repeating another twice. If I had failed to consider this principle errors would creep into my practice and I would begin to repeat bad habits without correction. Controlling my recovery gave me the time to receive feedback and improve performance.

Principle: Practices based on Stage of Learning

Principle: Practices based on data collection

Principle: Challenging but achievable, progressive varied practices.

42

Principles of Effective Practice

Why Feedback?

Positive effect on Learning

Types of feedback received Internal sensory External

Information processing system Gain knowledge from various sources (model performer) to identify and correct faults. As I progressed through stages of learning I was able to draw on past experiences to improve and strength

performance. Results in a quicker motor response due to muscle memory and improved decision making.

Monitoring progress Through feedback I receive as I practiced and competed I are able to make adaptation to my programme if

necessary (example) I can assess if I am on track to hit my long term target.

Data Collection Through comparison to a model performer I gained a visual picture of my overhead clear allowing me to

detect and correct errors. Set training priorities specific to my needs. Highlights stage of learning

Motivation/Concentration I used a variety of types of feedback (internal + verbal, written, visual) (Examples) Positive feedback - purpose, drive and determination Goal setting
