on this special night, I would like to relate to you an insightful question that I read last year. The question circles around the well known concept which states that there isn’t an extra word or even an extra letter in the entire Torah. Thus, when the Torah lists the sons of Yaakov in the beginning of Parshat Shemot, just as it did at the end of Sefer Breishet, one must wonder why it was necessary to enumerate them again.

Rashi, who asks this question, answers that the Torah wants to make known how precious the Jews are to HaShem. Just as he calls out every star by name and by number (see Yeshayah 40:26) so too He lists the shevatim by name and mentions the number of people who came down to Mitzrayim.

What needs further explanation is: Why does the Torah point out that HaShem counts the Jewish people with numbers, and then offers their names? What is the purpose of this double display of love, and what lesson can be derived from it?

Before we attempt to answer these questions it makes sense to layer this dilemma with another problem that arises in Chumash Bamidbar. There, in Parshat Naso, the Torah goes to great lengths listing each one of the shevatim and what korbanot their leader brought as part of the inauguration of the Mishkan. What’s troubling about the story is that each one of the shevatim brought exactly the same thing! Thus, there are over fifty “extra” pasukim in that section! If so, why did HaShem desire to list each one of their korbanot instead of merely listing the general offerings and mentioning that each shevet brought those items?

Perhaps, one could suggest the following idea as a solution to our dilemma. Regarding the enumeration of the shevatim in the beginning of Sefer Shemot, we know that these pasukim speak of the beginning of the formation of Bnei Yisrael and their first encounter with galut (exile) in Mitzrayim. The Torah is reminding us that we as Jews play a double role.

A name is an individual identity. Shem (shin mem) has the same letters as Sham (shin mem), which means over there, and is a way of identifying something external.

each Jew carries a dual responsibility. While he should recognize his individual role as a single person, he should also remember his role as a “team player” in Klal Yisrael – as part of the whole number.

Head of School ’s Message

l

The same concept can be applied to the korbanot of the leaders of each shevet in Sefer Bamidbar. While each person was an individual, blessed with unique talents, each was dedicated to the Klal.

our honorees understand their dual responsibility. They are the perfect examples.

In our every changing world, it is important to always stay current and know what your options are. Israel and Cindy Wiesel have been blessed with an indescribable thirst for knowledge. When an issue or a need arises, be it academic or a general item for the Yeshiva, you can find the two of them searching every nook and cranny for a solution. When the time is up they will have five answers for you and how each one will impact the bottom line. This partnership and passion for knowledge has been the driving force behind RYNJ’s technology growth spurt over the past three years. Israel has taken it upon himself to design the infrastructure for our building and played a vital role in selecting in the devices. Cindy, on the other hand, has dedicated herself to the teachers and the need to use technology in the Yeshiva to spread differentiated instruction for the benefit of our children. for them it is a passion and a labor of love. for us it is a gift that we are proud to acknowledge.

our Keter Shem Tov awardees, in a similar fashion, have dedicated their G-d given talents at RYNJ and in the community at-large. for those of us who have had the pleasure to speak with or work with David and Shira Greenberg know that their amiable personalities shine so bright. No matter what the topic is or what the need is, they are always ready to listen and to assist. Shira, as a former PTA president, was instrumental in fine tuning a culture of communication between the parent body and the administration. under her leadership the Yeshiva developed the Parentlinks workshops. It gave parents and administrators a chance to meet and create a bond in a more meaningful way. Today, she oversees our Parnas HaYom program and our simcha calendar. David has influenced our community with his involvement at Congregation Beth Abraham. He has served on its Board of Directors and has headed its adult education committee. for David, it is always “what can I do to make everyone else’s life easier and how can I help?”

our honorees, as Chazal explain in Parshiot Shemot and Naso, recognize that their gifts from G-d must be shared with the Klal. They recognize that they have been blessed and take it upon themselves to do whatever they can to make this Yeshiva and community better for everyone else. It is for that reason that we are thrilled to be honoring them tonight.

Rabbi Yissacher frand strikingly notes a great lesson that can be derived from the mitzvah of bringing the Bikkurim (first fruits) to the Bais HaMikdash. When the fruits were brought, the farmer declared his gratitude to G-d by reciting the posukim that were to become the central narrative of the Pesach Haggadah. The Alshich is bothered by a Midrash on Parashas Bereishis. The Midrash states that the world was created for the sake of “Reishis” and proposes three possibilities for the reference of “Reishis”: The world was created for the sake of (1) Torah, which is called “Reishis”, (2) Am Yisrael, which is similarly referred to as “Reishis” and, (3) the mitzvah of Bikkurim, the “Reishis” of the first fruits. The Alshich is perplexed by the list. To say that the world was created so that Torah can

be learned and practiced or that the world functions for the thriving of Israel is understandable; but considering all the mitzvos in the Torah, how do we say the world was created for the mitzvah of Bikkurim?

The Alshich answers his question. Indeed the mitzvah of Bikkurim carries an essential lesson for humanity. A human being must genuinely feel a sense of gratitude. Rabbi frand paraphrases the Alshich with these words: “Hakaras haTov, embodied in Bikkurim, is so basic and primary that the whole world’s creation was actualized just for this mitzvah, which teaches us and trains us in the attitude of gratitude.”

This evening the parents, faculty, and friends of the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey, have the wonderful opportunity of expressing their Hakaras haTov to four very special people.

Cindy Wiesel has been a dynamic force for academic excellence within the walls of the yeshiva. Her roles at RYNJ, conducted with brilliance of mind and inexhaustible energy, have been vast and far-reaching: Classroom teacher, enrichment math specialist, math coordinator, e2K instructor and initiator, Blended learning lead. She is always innovating, leading, tirelessly working, as she employs her creative mind. Hundreds of students and parents have celebrated learning together at Cindy’s family Math nights, and hundreds of students have grown under her academic leadership.

Israel Wiesel is literally responsible for the walls of the yeshiva. Israel supervises the functioning of a vast facility that is multi-dimensional. He makes sure that our institution is safe, comfortable, educationally enhancing, technologically updated, and a home-away-from-home, for over a thousand children. His effort is endless, his attitude always positive, his demeanor reassuring, and his devotion to the yeshiva immeasurable.

Shira and David Greenberg truly embody the true meaning of a Sheim Tov. They are models of devoted parenting and parents devoted to their children’s school. Shira has conducted herself as a PTA President and Vice-President with dignity, great effort, insight, and Kavod HaTorah. Her work is reflective of a devotion to a Torah institution and has resulted in innovative programming, successful fund-raising, and most importantly, the creation of a feeling of good will between the parent body and the administration and teachers of the yeshiva. Her modesty, caring manner, and enthusiasm, are the standard for the positively involved Yeshiva parent. She partners with her husband, David, to create an exemplary home dedicated to school, shul, Torah learning, and the Jewish community

Tonight is truly an opportunity to demonstrate that gratitude is a fundamental element of humanity. Showing Hakaras HaTov serves G-d’s purpose in this world.

It is an honor to welcome you to Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey’s 77th annual dinner. our annual dinner provides us with a unique opportunity to gather together and reflect on all that we have to celebrate.

We are so proud, first and foremost, of the accomplishments of each and every one of our students. We celebrate our outstanding, dedicated staff of professionals to whom we entrust the education and development of our children. We celebrate the graduating class of 2015 who will go on to join the thousands of RYNJ alumni who epitomize the superior results of an RYNJ education. We are grateful for a committed and enthusiastic parent body who understand the value

of a Jewish education and partner with us every step of the way. It is a pleasure to work alongside lay leaders who are deeply devoted to the Yeshiva and who are a priceless resource in working towards our continued shared goal of academic excellence and commitment to Torah learning, the careful performance of mitzvot, and spiritual growth. We are grateful to our exceptional team of administrators, lead by Rabbi Price and Rabbi Goldstein, who inspire us all through their leadership and devotion to our Yeshiva. We are especially gratified this year to celebrate the completion of our new gym and additional classrooms that will enhance the day to day activities and school life of our students and staff.

of course, we are here tonight to celebrate our honorees, each of whom are a true representation of the faculty/parent partnership that contributes to the success of our Yeshiva.

our Guests of Honor, Israel and Cindy Wiesel, are essential and respected members of our staff who are relied on for their respective expertise in so many areas. Israel is our behind the scenes champion. His can-do attitude, calm demeanor and creativity are a valuable resource for all of us. He is relied on and appreciated by everyone who works for RYNJ. Cindy’s passion for education and for math in particular, has invigorated our curriculum and academic standards over her many years teaching at RYNJ. Cindy is always looking to do more and learn more so that she can teach more. The Wiesel’s son, Tzvi RYNJ 2008, is a special source of pride to us, as he is currently serving in the IDf.

David and Shira Greenberg, our Keter Shem Tov Awardees, are a shining example of the parental involvement and dedication to volunteerism that sets the RYNJ parent body apart. David can be counted on to volunteer for any and every school event, just as he does for so many other community institutions. His sage advice is always appreciated and he is always ready to help with anything that is asked of him. Shira has devoted herself to volunteering for RYNJ, from her invaluable tenure on the PTA, as vice president and president, to her current work as a board member and running our Parnas HaYom fundraising and our Simcha Calendar. We are so grateful for all that they have done and continue to do for the Yeshiva.

This dinner is the culmination of many months of hard work by our dinner chairs, Jennifer Wiederkehr and Shira Isenberg, the dinner committee and the incredibly dedicated staff in our business office, led by the incomparable Sandy Steinberg. I thank them for all that they do to ensure the success of this dinner campaign.

We are grateful for the exemplary generosity of our supporters and to all of you for coming tonight to celebrate with us.

At this year’s RYNJ dinner we are Zocheh to celebrate the exponential growth of our Yeshiva and take this opportunity to thank two very special couples who have been key components in our success.

A few years ago our yeshiva had 500 students and then the next year a few more, and this trend continued to the point we are at today. Baruch Hashem there are 1115 children learning Torah every day in our Daled Amos. Those Daled Amos too have been growing over the years and we just recently completed the expansion of our gymnasium and additional classrooms added to house new families who want to be a part of RYNJ. With the support of our generous donors, parent body and staff, we

have been able to offer expanded services and programs and not raise tuition for the 6th year in a row. The RYNJ family has so much to be thankful for.

Tonight’s guests of honor are those very people who make our Yeshiva so special. I heard an amazing Dvar Torah on Gematriahs. A young person was challenging his Rav on the seemingly nonsensical number stories he was always hearing in shiur. finally his Rebbe told him that Gematriahs are the foundation of the Torah just like the blueprint of the architect. When one looks at plans of a building they are just lots of lines, dots and dashes, but in the right hands they can become buildings, bridges and schools. Tonight we celebrate two people who actually make our Gematriahs come to fulfillment. Cindy Wiesel spends her days teaching our children the basics and advanced levels of math and then Iz spends his days making sure our buildings, which used math to be constructed, remain in proper working order. Iz is involved in countless technical aspects of running RYNJ and at all hours of the night you can find the Wiesels finalizing their days work. We are blessed to have this fine family as part of our Yeshiva and we take a moment tonight to thank them for all they have done.

We are also pleased to bestow the Keter Shem Tov award to Shira and David Greenberg. When I was president of RYNJ, Shira was president of the PTA. Many times she would come to my office to discuss issues facing the PTA and RYNJ in general. I can relate to all the time and effort Shira dedicated at that time and continues to do so now as a board member. David has always been a sounding

board and source of support for the Yeshiva and for me personally. Whether I had an idea or request that I needed his point of view on, or some assistance to get a project accomplished, he is always so thrilled to be involved in our Yeshiva. The Keter Shem Tov is the proper acknowledgement for this dedicated couple.

I must take this opportunity to also thank our current president Azi Mandel for all he does on a daily basis for RYNJ. unless you have been in his shoes you really can not understand how much time he devotes to RYNJ. Azi thinks about the Yeshiva during the day and dreams about the future of RYNJ during the night. May HKBH grant him many successful years in all his endeavors.

I recently had the Zechus to visit the 8th grade girls Shabbaton. The young ladies were joined by their Morot and Rabbi Kaminetsky as well. In addition, Rabbi Price and his wife lea and their children were also in attendance. I saw not just one man but a family worthy of filling the shoes of Rabbi Shmuel and Barbara Goldstein who set the bar quite high for an administration. I pray to the Ribbono Shel olam on a daily basis, that he give the Price family the strength to lead our Yeshiva for many years to come.

It is with great pleasure that we honor Cindy and Israel Wiesel for their integral service and dedication to RYNJ, both as vital and respected members of our staff and as proud RYNJ parents. Cindy Wiesel has been a source of innovation and talent for the past 21 years at RYNJ, from her first position teaching 5th grade, to her current role of Blended learning lead as the facilitator of RYNJ’s BolD grant. Mrs. Wiesel guided the implementation of blended learning into eighth grade math and seventh grade science. She is a source of advice, mentoring, and knowledge of computer-based resources for the junior high school staff. Aside from her blended learning activities, Cindy is the K-5 math coordinator. Her vision of excellence has a profound effect throughout the school. The teacher of RYNJ’s challenging enrichment math classes for many years, Cindy created RYNJ’s exciting Math Nights, special after-school programs for parents and children to celebrate the “fun” components of math. Her commitment to the children of RYNJ is also reflected in her after-school devotion to RYNJ’s e2K programs in math and science. Mrs. Wiesel’s boundless energy has made the e2K program highly successful in stimulating student interest in math and the sciences. RYNJ’s e2K teams have won international competitions in the math and sciences. As an exciting and intellectually challenging teacher, Mrs. Wiesel always broadens her students’ horizons and their thinking abilities. t seems that wherever there is a need, Mrs. Wiesel steps forward, and with energy, commitment, and brilliance of mind, succeeds at every challenge.

Mr. Israel Wiesel uses his talents and experience to ensure that RYNJ’s soon-to-be 150,000 square foot facility is a safe environment conducive to the learning needs of 1,115 students, and supported by over 200 staff members. To accomplish this, srael seems to work 24/6. He is always available to solve the newest problem with ingenuity, experience, and a calm demeanor. Mr. Wiesel sees that the yeshiva spends wisely and constantly looks for cost savings. He is extremely talented in information technology. More than the facility manager, he is truly the school’s Information Technology specialist who maintains extensive computer operations and many forms of education technology. like his wife Cindy, he is always ready to accept new challenges and has been instrumental in securing extensive Homeland Security grants for RYNJ. Israel’s soothing presence and effective approach to challenging problems have greatly contributed to the successful environment of the Yeshiva. He is an invaluable presence in RYNJ, respected by faculty, parents and students. Cindy and Israel are the proud parents of Tzvi RYNJ 2008, eli RYNJ 2010, Dafna RYNJ 2014, Avishai, a current sixth grade student and Ariella, a current second grade student.

It is with great pleasure that we honor David and Shira Greenberg with the Keter Shem Tov Award. The Greenbergs have been proud and devoted RYNJ parents for the last 13 years. They have worked tirelessly and enthusiastically for the Yeshiva to improve existing programs and develop exciting and beneficial new programming and fundraising opportunities. Shira has been a vital force in the RYNJ-PTA serving as PTA President and for many years prior as Vice President, playing an integral role with our students and faculty through the planning, financing and implementation of countless programs and events designed to enhance the RYNJ experience. Currently, Shira serves as coordinator of the school Parnas Hayom program, oversees the school Simcha calendar and serves on the RYNJ Board of Directors.

Both David and Shira generously volunteer their time whenever needed, working to ensure the success of school functions including the recent Middle States Reaccreditation Committee, Chinese Auction, Scholarship Reception, and Annual open House. In addition to their immeasurable devotion to RYNJ, David and Shira are active in many community endeavors. David has served on the board of Congregation Beth Abraham, headed the Congregation Beth Abraham Adult education committee, and is involved with Bikur Cholim of Boro Park. Shira has worked on the Congregation Beth Abraham Welcoming and Dinner Committees. David and Shira are the proud parents of Sheva RYNJ ‘13, efraim, a current eighth grade student, Dani, a current fourth grade student, and Ari, a current Pre-K student.

our parents are way better than your parents. our dad could beat up your dad, and our mom is smarter than

your mom. Why it took so long for RYNJ to recognize their usefulness is beyond us. like our hero once said,

“We run this town.”

Yes, they do run the building and anything that’s related to counting, or subtracting or other useless functions of math.

our father rarely gets a full night’s sleep due to the overexcited alarm system, which in turn wakes up my mother. She then goes back to her sea of papers and trying to figure out how

she can implant even more technology into education.

It is due to the aforementioned statement that we, the jury, must recommend that you keep them.

They’re more than good, they’re great.

To our very own

Ms. frizzle (better looking of course) and MacGyver We remember...

When you gave the 5th grade boys a does of culture, (that’s when we still went on trips!)

When YNJ learned that e2K was not a computer virusWhen Yosef realized that math enrichment was ok...

even if there were girls in his classWhen girls realized they really do like math especially

if you serve them ‘pi’When the parade banner finally made it through the parade in one

piece (but now you have to find places to hang them!)When all the classrooms finally had all their cubbies (and desks)

When constructions was finally over on the new building (just in time to start the gym expansion)

When you actually had ‘regular” work hoursWhen your garage was my personal home depot rental

(wait...it still is or should I say Iz)

You are truly a power couple. We and the Yeshiva have been very lucky to have your friendship and support for the past 19 years (yes

that’s when the boys were in Tammy and Alice together).Mazel Tov on this most deserving honor.

Mamma Mia! (Dedicated to Cindy and “Izzy”)

We’ve been amused by you since I don’t know when, with a sense of humor so strong it doesn’t ever endlook at math class, hanging on every word; if they don’t behave, no more e2K for them

There’s a fire within her soulJust one “look” – they’ll never hear the bell ring; one more “look” and they’ll recall everything, o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here we go again; my my, ‘fressing at a supperMamma mia, to a [Broadway] show again; my my, mishnayos at the Dinner

Yes, we’ll never make amends, to count you with our dearest friends Why, why, did we leave Wilbur Road?

Mamma mia, now we really know; my my, potato koogel’s mother-lode!

I’ve been uplifted by the “shtaiging” that we do, enhanced by a stein of Sam Adams when we’re halfway through fishing with kids, at the Monksville Reservoir; fixing our steps, helpful evermore, like sookah supports

Spending Shabos at your bungalow Just one sniff and I can savor your ‘cue; one more shot [Rebel Yell] and I’ll need a rescue, o-o-oh

Mamma Mia, here you go again; my my, planning for the Sisterhood Mamma Mia, does it show again; my my, woodworking for the neighborhood

Yes, we’ve been so inspired, by Tzvi in Tsaha”l, always tired Why, why, “Mambo leibovitzy”??

Mamma mia, Purim’s quite a show My, my, we will never let you go!
