Inco Metals Company recently participated in a display of a safely-oriented nature atSudbury's Carmichael Arena. Sponsored by Bell Canada, the show was attended by anestimated 3,500 people. Displays included an OPP "Safely Village", and elaborateexhibits by the Sudbury Regional Police, the Sudbury Fire Department, the St. JohnAmbulance, the Sudbury Red Cross, Bell Canada and the various safety equipmentsuppliers. The theme of Inco's display included all facets of resuscitation, includinginfant resuscitation, and basic cardiac life support. Getting some pointers from lnco'schief first aid co-ordinator, Hank Derks, left, and CPA instructor Rick Cholette, secondfrom right, is a typical Bell Canada family, Timothy Thomason, dad Jim, holding Tommy,and Marge, holding 5-week-old Terry.

These are the pipes and drums of the Copper Cliff Highlanders of Canada. Formed in1950 by Captain Sam Laderoute and Pipe Major Bill Livingstone Sr.. the band iswell-known throughout Canada, having won three national championships over the years.Also, for 14 years, the pipes and drums of the Copper Cliff Highanders have playedto capacity audiences at the Canadian National Exhibition. Long term plans call forthe band to demonstrate its skills at the famous Edinburgh Festival.

One sure sign of the arrival of springand coming of summer is the appearanceof members of the agriculture depart-ment's Copper Cliff greenhouse, as theybegin planting flowers and trees through-out the area.

The all-out campaign to beautify theappearance of Inco's various surface andunderground facilities, both inside andout, is part of the agriculture department'sregular grounds maintenance program.Throughout the coming months, theagriculture crews will be making theirrounds, tending the progress of theircurrent labors.

Component repair centre personnelbegan their installations last month, andhave uncrated and inspected most oftheir new equipment and machinery.

Moving will be spread over the last twoweeks of June and the first two weeksof July, in order to complete the taskbefore this year's shutdown.

Rare talent passes on fromgeneration to generation

Peter El/ero, sculptor, prepares a 12-ton blockof Little Stobie nickel ore, donated by Inco tothe City of Sudbury.

Peter Ellero and son Fred areadmittedly proud of their status as two ofthe very few professional sculptors inOntario. It's a pride that shows throughin the fine craftsmanship of their work,which can range from the most delicateof pale onyx carvings to the classic linesof hand-carved blue granite memorials.

Ellero came from western Italy toSudbury in 1962 with his wife Emma andtwo small children, relocating his busi-ness which was founded in 1930. Hespent two years as a scooptram operatorat Creighton mine's No. 3 shaft beforedeciding to devote all of his time to thefamily trade.

And family trade it is. Peter's fatherand his grandfather before him werestone artisans, and the craft has beenpassed down from father to son. YoungFred, now 23, began carving andpolishing at the tender age of 10, andmentioned that he learned more byobservation than by instruction. "Likemy father always used to tell me, nobodyever teaches you a trade. You have tosteal it from them." Fred was made a 45per cent partner five years ago, in thenow-flourishing enterprise known asPeter Ellero and Son Ltd.

As well as memorials, the father/sonteam design and produce coffee and endtables, chess sets, lamps, statuettes,ashtrays, cigarette boxes, figurines, andmuch more. In fact, there are anestimated 5,000 pieces of work valued atover $100,000 displayed in the four LorneStreet showrooms.

Business is divided about equallybetween decorative work and monu-ments, with granite used exclusively formemorials because of its durability.Ellero imports black, red, and bluegranite from South Africa, grey and red

SudburySculptorsfrom Quebec, pink from Labrador, andfrom Ireland comes a very fine crystalgranite known as Black Belfast.

Peter designs the monuments himselfand cuts the rough shape from the hugeslabs of rock, while Fred does most ofthe fine carving and finishing.

Marble and onyx are used for theornamental work. The different types ofmarble, imported from Italy, France,Belgium, Yugoslavia and Portugal, areused largely for pedestals, bases, andsmall statues. Onyx is a semi-preciousgemstone, more expensive than marble,but non-corrosive and not easily stained.Various kinds are imported from Pakistan,India, Guatemala, Mexico and Argentinaand, as might be expected, shippingcosts are exorbitant, but "that's just partof the business."

Some of the 'extras' on decorativepieces come from Canada; for example,wooden cabinets and electrical fixtures,and lampshades which are ordered froma Quebec firm.

All brasswork must be imported fromItaly and, similarly, mechanisms for musicboxes, clocks and telephones areimported from Switzerland.

Besides Peter and Fred, there are twoyoung Mexican stoneworkers on staff."I would have hired Canadians," saidEllero, "but Canada Manpower couldn'tlocate one single qualified professionalsculptor in the country. From coast tocoast, they couldn't find me one."

Inco recently commissioned Ellero tocreate 1,000 safety awards - bearscarved of Crean Hill ore on an onyxbase. Another Inco/Ellero joint ventureis a 10 by 14-foot copper panel, madeof high-grade copper ore and installed inthe Regional Council chambers in theCivic Square complex. Fred Ellero saysit "signifies what Sudbury is based on,what we started from."

The artistry and craftsmanship evidentin the Ellero creations is uncommon anddelightful. And although stonework is hislivelihood, Peter thinks of it almost as ahobby. "Every piece of stone has itsproblems that must be worked out. Whenthere's no trouble, it's beautiful." Headded simply, "I love my work."

The latest "scoop" onIn our March edition, we featured a

story dealing with the curtailment ofoperations at Copper Cliff North mineand the subsequent dismantling andhoisting of production equipment fromthe underground workings.

With the removal program now com-pleted, some of you may have beenwondering about the continued activityaround the plant entrance, particularlywith the mine now on a standby basis.Well, it seems that the mine's main-tenance people are still hard at it and,in fact, have implemented an ambitiousprogram of repairwork that's keepingthem fully occupied.

Centre of attention and scene ofactivity is the combined shop area, withscooptrams being overhauled in the plateand machine shops since March, andmine cars being modified in the local

The decision to repair the scoopsinternally, rather than send them out tocontractors or suppliers, was based on aneconomic factor as well as the realizationthat our own maintenance people arefully qualified to recognize repairrequirements and perform necessaryrepairs, rebuilds and overhauls.

According to Copper Cliff mines areamaintenance superintendent John Brodie,the majority of pieces of equipment beingworked on are from North mine, withsome from Creighton and Crean Hill;they'll be used mainly at Levack, Frood,and Shebandowan mines. "And we'reputting quite a few pieces through, hecontinued. To date, the repair area hasoverhauled an ST-8 for Shebandowan; aJS-500 five-yard scoop for South mine;an ST-4 for Garson; an ST-8 for Frood;an ST-2 for Garson; a fan drill for Southmine and an ST-2 for Shebandowan. Inaddition, a 14O-cubc-foot car from Northmine has been converted from a three-foot to two-foot gauge, for service atGarson mine. Added Brodie, "We seemto be short of two-foot-gauge cars, andwe have a fair number of good cars hereat North mine that can be altered. Byconverting from 140 to 110 cubic-footcapacity, and three to two-foot gauge,and vice-versa, we can supply thenumber of cars required to maintainproduction, without going to the expenseof purchasing new."

While plans are indefinite concerningthe length of time this kind of programwill be in effect at North mine, Brodiementioned that "we can certainly do thework internally, using our own manpowerand expertise. Value judgements cansave, too. A supplier may do more thanis necessary, while our men can deter-mine exactly what needs doing, they canget at it right away, and in most cases,can perform the work less expensively."

The fast growing ranks of theCopper Cliff Chapter of Inco'sQuarter Century Club were swelled by525 new members from the mining,milling, smelting, refining, and theadministration and engineeringsections at this year's meeting, heldat the lnco Club on Frood Road.Despite the size of the groups, thefriendly and informal atmosphere ofthe occasion was retained.

Introduced by senior supervision ofhis division, each new member andhis wife shook hands with thecompany officers and received theircongratulations and good wishes,many pausing to recall old times. Thecoveted gold lapel badges, signifying25 years of Inco service, werepresented to each new member.

Some of Canada's outstandingtelevision personalities were theheadliners of the vastly enjoyed stageshow. Al Cherny, a regular on theTommy Hunter Show, delighted theaudience as did Jackie and CoralieAllan, the "Allan Sisters". Supplyingthe dance music for each evening'sevent was "Eastwind", a well-knownand versatile group.

The Copper Cliff Chapter of Inco'sQuarter Century Club now boasts atotal membership of 8,511, with3,841 pensioners and 4,670 activeemployees.

The Triangle photographer was onhand to record this year's QuarterCentury Club gathering, and thefollowing pages prove beyond doubtthat "a good time was had by all".

Free-wheeling44-year-old

Ordinarily, Jeff Luck doesn't attractundue attention when he wheels aroundtown; after all, there's nothing much outof the ordinary about a 1975 Oldsmobile.But heads sure turn when he decides tohit the road in his gleaming, beige andbrown 1934 Dodge.

A construction foreman at Creightonmine, Jeff's been with the company for13 years now, and explained that hebought the car in 1966 from a Manitoulinfarmer. Price? $500.

Twenty-five hundred man hours ofwork later, the flat six-cylinder coupe isnow worth in the neighbourhood of$10,000!

Recalling the date of purchase, Jeffremembered that the car "was in prettyfair shape then, except for a few bulletholes." Any and all work that had to bedone, he's done himself, with the help ofwife Fern, who did "one heck of a job."

They finished the body-work, rebuiltthe engine, re-upholstered, did everythingbut the rechroming. And at AutoramaCanada, held last month at the Car-michael Arena in Sudbury, the '34 Dodgetook top honors for Best Restored Classauto, competing against 38 other antiquemodels.

The car can do 75 miles per hour, butJeff rarely puts it over 45. "I figure it'sbeen around for 44 years now; I don'twant to harm it by pushing it," heexplained.

One of the car's most interestingfeatures is a "free-wheeling' mechanism,which allows the driver to slip into neutraland coast, merely by taking his foot offthe accelerator. Free-wheeling wasbanned in the 1930's because it wasthought to be a road hazard, but "thiscar's got it, so I use it occasionally."

Jeff admits that he and Fern sometimesfeel somewhat like Bonnie and Clydewhen they drive about in their depression-era Dodge. "I've got this old grey tweedhat that I wear, sort of makes me feellike a gangster," he laughed.

Jeff mentioned that he's keeping aneye open for other old cars that he canrevamp, and is particularly looking forone that will be large enough to carry thewholy family - he and Fern, daughterKimberlee, 13, and seven-year-old Buzz.

Would he sell the 34 classic? 'Def-initely not," he says. 'I'd say that car'sgot about 90 per cent of me in it."

Local FishermenInvited To PromoteEnvironmental Study

Agnew Lake anglers could get paid fortheir sport this year and, at the same time,assist lnco Metals Company in compilingdata for its study to determine thefeasibility of developing further hydrogenerating facilities on the Spanish River.

Field work involved in the environ-mental assessment study is nearingcompletion with a walleye (pickerel)sampling and tagging program in AgnewLake. Each of several hundred walleyecaught in a netting program was weighed,measured, tagged with a numbered tagand carefully released.

The company is offering a $1 rewardfor the return of each tag, provided theangler fills out a questionnaire detailingsuch facts as fish weight and length, andlocation and date of catch. The informa-tion, with the tag, must then be turnedin at one of several Agnew Lake touristestablishments displaying special fishingsurvey signs.

Purpose of the survey is to determinethe movement of walleye in Agnew Lakeand the possible effects on this fishpopulation of the construction of a hydrogenerating facility at any of the five siteson the Spanish River above the lake thatare being considered by Inco.

Inco already has four generating plantsand 11 control dams on the SpanishRiver watershed and the current $1million feasibility study - announced onMarch 11, 1977 - is designed toestablish a cost estimate and determinewhether environmentally and economi-cally acceptable locations exist for ahydro-electric plant.

Checking up on the tagging operationrecently was Doug Ogston, OntarioDivision general foreman at the divisionalshops complex. Doug has a specialinterest in such projects. He's firstvice-president of the 18,000-strongOntario Federation of Anglers andHunters, chairman of Zone 2 of theFederation and past-president of theCopper Cliff Rod and Gun Club.

Some lucky angler may get the fishing thrillof his life if he ever lands this trophy walleyebeing weighed by Doug Ogston. (If caught,the fish has a tag redeemable for $1 forassisting Inco in its Agnew Lake fishingsurvey.) Additionally, any angler would bepleased to boat a nine and three-quarterpound walleye.

Man's age-old fascination with thecomplexities and advantages of flying hascarried him from an early worship ofwinged creatures to the eventualconquering of space.

Always intrigued by the intricacies offlying, Joe Agius of the Port Colbornenickel refinery now builds and flies hisown radio-controlled model airplanes.Joe had been interested in the hobby fora long time, but it wasn't until three yearsago that he became actively involved.He heard of the St. Catharines Radio Con-trol Airplane Club, made a few enquiries,and began gathering the necessaryequipment to start building. Three monthslater, he'd finished his first model, aFalcon 56. It took Joe another threemonths and about 120 hours of labor tocomplete his Heathkit radio control unit,which has a range of about one mile andhas two different frequencies with sevenchannels, each operating a different con-trol on the plane.

Currently, Joe has two models in flyingorder: the original Falcon, powered by a.56cc Webra engine, and a Kluz-Bugwith a .60cc OS. Max engine. He's nowin the process of building a Pond-Hoppersea plane, which will be powered by a.40cc K.M.B. engine.

The St. Catharines Radio Control Air-plane Club has a membership of nearly60, drawn from all walks of life. Activitiesare held at two fields, one near BrockUniversity in St. Catharines, and theother just off Ridge Road in Welland.

Murray mine:

Since early last fall, Murray mine hasbeen the site of a sandfill research lab,where members of the mines engineeringdepartment are looking into the possibilityof partially replacing the cement used inunderground sandfill operations withfinely-ground slag.

In the lab, cement, tailings from oursandplants, and ground slag provided bythe process technology department aremixed in various ratios, poured intosix-inch-diameter by 12-inch-high card-board test cylinders and allowed to cure

for various lengths of time. When thesamples are removed from the specialcuring room, theyre capped with aplaster of Paris cement mixture andtested in a tn-axial compression machineto determine their breaking strength.

Results are then compared to deter-mine what quantities of slag, tailings andcement will produce a strength com-parable to the sandfill currently usedunderground. The right combination willprovide a positive use for slag and willnaturally result in a lower cost forsandfilling operations.

While many people are said to have a hyp-notic effect on others, the statement, in thecase of Gary Lot, can be applied literallyrather than figuratively. Gary, an Inco writerfor the Modular Training System, has beenpractising the art of hypnotism since 1955,and has since completed courses in Scien-tific Hypnosis and Self-Hypnosis, AdvancedHypnotic Techniques, and Stress Control. Don Taylor, centre, chairman of the Sudbury Regional Board of Police Commissioners andvice-president and general manager of Nickel Basin Properties Limited, takes a close look atthe two newly-acquired Harley-Davidson 1200 series motorbikes. Known as 'police specials',the bikes are valued at over $6,000 apiece and are adapted for mobile radar which allowsthem to clock oncoming and stationary traffic. Everyday use and stress on some metalparts causes flaws undetectable by visualinspection. Here Mike Lizotte of mainte-nance engineering in Copper Cliff and BIllReich of the maintenance department at thePort Colborne nickel refinery, test a craneshaft with ultrasonic waves to determine theexistence and location of any flaws. All craneshafts are tested on a yearly basis, as aremany other parts. In addition to the ultra-sonic waves, several other nondestructivemethods of testing are used.

A Canadian Broadcasting Corporation filmcrew travelled from Toronto to the Sudburyarea recently to shoot location scenes for anupcoming television drama movie. My cedars and evergreensover the winter - what cafrom happening?

Winter drying is a fairly common problem,caused by the early spring sun shining on theneedles. The sap, still frozen, is thawed andstarts to lose moisture by evaporation. Unfor-tunately, the root system is still frozen and cannbring up water to replace the moisture loss,resulting in a browning of the needles due todehydration. There are several tricks that canhelp. First, pour plenty of water around yourevergreens in the fall of the year, making sure Uigo into the frost period thoroughly saturated.Wrapping with burlap also helps, provided youdon't remove it too early in the spring. Sprayingwith a cellulose compound called 'Wilt-Pruf' willhelp to seal the needle surface, thus preventinga loss of moisture.

While this might seem to be the easiestquestion to answer, it's actually one of the mostdifficult, because there are so many variables toconsider. For instance: how large is the plant?what type of soil is it growing in? When was thelast time it was repotted? Where is it growing?what are the light conditions? All of these, andmore, have a bearing on how often the plantneeds water, but a pretty good rule of thumb is towater from the top until the surplus drains out ofthe bottom holes, then pour off any water thatdrains out. Never plant in a planter withoutdrainage, and never allow the roots to stand inwater.

during May or early June, the plant should be cutback severely. If you examine your plant carefullyyou'll notice that from soil level, the stem willbranch out about three to four inches. Tracealong the branches until you find the second nodeor leaf joint, and cut off each branch about halfan inch above that joint, removing most of the topgrowth from the plant. Feed regularly every threeweeks with a 20-20-20 soluble fertilizer and, assoon as the ground is frost-free, plunge the plant,still in the pot, into the garden. Continue to feedduring the summer months and, before the dangerof fall frost, dig it up and bring it back into thehouse. By this time, your plant should havedeveloped a thick bushy growth. To initiate thered bracts for Christmas, the plant must be giventhe 'short day' treatment: that is, it should begrown in full light during the day, but fromNovember 1, be given 14 hours of completedarkness daily. Cover with a black material orplace in a completely dark closet from 6 pm till8 am. The red bracts should return in about sixweeks, just in time for Christmas.

There are two ways to increase your stock ofgeraniums. Firstly, cuttings can be taken in thefall of the year, before the frost, simply by cuttingoff the growing tip of each stem and allowing twonodes or leaf joints below the surface and twoabove: therefore, the cutting must have fournodes. Strip off all of the leaves except at thegrowing tip, leaving only two full leaves there.Cut the stem diagonally through the node, threenodes below the growing tip, and dip in a No. 1rooting hormone. Plant firmly in perlite,vermiculite, or clean sharp sand. Keep moist andleave undisturbed until rooted, then transplant intoa growing medium. The second method is to liftthe parent plant before the danger of frost, pot itinto a large pot, bring it indoors, and trim backthe top growth to about the second node. Bytrimming severely, you encourage new shoots,resulting in a compact, bushy plant: otherwise, theplant will shed most of its leaves, resulting in atall, bare plant.
