December 2018
Global Impact. Local Resonance.
The research community at the University of Memphis is making consistent impact as wegrow our University's national reputation for excellence in research across disciplines. Everymonth we see more and more evidence of our resonance. Whether it is Dr. Wang and Dr.Jacob's ground-breaking research using 3D surveying technology, Dr. Bowlin's use of 3Dprinting to create vascular grafts, the innovative approaches of our new dean of theGraduate School, Dr. Robin Poston, or the appointment of Dr. Jasbir Dhaliwal, executive vicepresident for Research and Innovation, to the Tennessee State Energy Policy Council byGovernor Bill Haslam unitl 2021, we are working to create a dynamic research community.Look for the next big leap forward in our January newsletter.
UofM Partners with City of
Memphis to Win $418k
"Map901" Grant
A collaboration between the City ofMemphis and UofM Computer Scienceand Electrical Engineering faculty hasnetted a $417,953 grant from the NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology.Over the next year, UofM’s Map901 team, led by Drs. Lan Wang and Eddie Jacobs, will use novel 3D Lidar technology tosurvey nearly 2 million sq. ft. of city anduniversity building space. They will use thedata to develop a 3D visualizationapplication that will help first respondersnavigate buildings in an emergencysituation where access to such systems inreal-time is critical. Bowlin Lab Using 3D
Technology to Develop
Vascular Grafts
Dr. Gary Bowlin’s Biomedical EngineeringLab is pioneering the use of 3D near-fieldelectrospinning, a nanofiber additivemanufacturing process, to construct tissueregeneration templates and medicaldevices. The first use of this technology isbeing applied to designing a biomimicking, biodegradable polymer vascular graft thatwill function as a blood vessel andpromote regeneration, such that in sixmonths the polymer tube is gone and wehave a new blood vessel in its place.

Division of Research and
Innovation Launches New
Limited Submission
Process
The Division of Research and Innovation islaunching a new process to facilitate thesubmission of limited grant competitions. Limited submissions exist when a sponsorlimits the number of applications theUniversity can submit. In order to ensure afair and efficient process, staff havecreated guidelines and a websiteidentifying funding opportunities thatrequire the new process. The process willensure that when the University can onlysubmit one application, the proposal thatbest meets the sponsor guidelines and theUniversity’s strategic priorities will besubmitted.
