COMMUNITY COLLEGES…

• Anyone 18 and older can enroll (must have a diploma or the GED to get financial aid)

• More affordable—pay by unit (currently $46/unit- a Full Time students takes 12 units a semester)

• Can take courses to transfer to universities (IGETC) and/or courses to earn a Certificate or an Associate Degree

• Placement tests are required to determine entry level placement of students in English and Math When you take the SBAC this year, the EAP test is part of it

and how you do will help determine if you have to take the placements tests at college.

VOCATIONAL MILITARY

Vocational schools include: Wyotech, UTI, DeVry, Le Cordon Blue, FIDM, Paul Mitchel (Cosmetology school) etc.

Admissions Requirements:

Apply 6 weeks before planned attendance date

Math and English Placement Tests

Military Requirements: High School Diploma

ASVAB – recommended score of 50. ASVAB Exam is offered at LRHS.

Some branches no longer accept any on line courses, please contact the recruiter

Currently all branches of the military are giving preference to High School Seniors. If you wait until after you graduate you will be placed on a waiting list.

You have until December of Senior year to take the exams. However, we recommend to be done by November. There are some CSU campuses that ask for the last date to take them to be in October.

UNDERSTANDING THE SAT AND ACT…

College Ready= 500 and above in English, 550 and above in Math.

College Ready= 22 and above in English, 23 and above in Math

The new SAT- March 2016 and on…o better reflects what you are learning in class

o Focus on widely used words and phrases

o no penalty for guessing

o a focus on the math that matters most for college and career, and that is related to work students do in class

o free test practice for all

o 3 hours (plus 50 minutes for Essay [optional])

o Reading test, writing and Language test, math test, essay (optional)

o Scores ranging from 400 to 1600

o Section score ranges 200-800

The ACT- Curriculum based college entrance exam that

measures skills in English, mathematics, reading, and science and offers an optional writing test.

NCAA CLEARINGHOUSEIf you plan to play sports for a college once you graduate, you must register with the NCAA clearinghouse and make sure you meet the requirements

for the Division you want to play for.

There is a sliding scale for your GPA and SAT or ACT test score.

Beginning August 2016, NCAA Division 1 will require 10 courses to be completed by senior year (7 of the 10 must be a combination of English, Math and Science)

DIVISION I – CLASS OF 2016 AND ON

QUALIFIER REQUIREMENTS

o Athletics aid, practice, and competition criteria

o 16 Core Courseso Your Ten(10) core courses must be

competed before the start of your Senior year.o Seven (7) of the ten (10) course

completed must be in English, math or natural sciences.

o If you are repeating core-courses in You Senior year you will not be eligible for competition, known as being as “Redshirt Player”.

o Your SAT or SAT scores combined with your core-course GPA will determine if you Qualify for a Division I School

Division II changes start with the Class of 2018

Minimum GPA in core courses will be a 2.20 in order to play in athletic competitions.

Summer School- we were informed there won’t be summer school, so it’s important that you PASS your classes each semester.

Registration for Senior year will be Late January/ early Feb. 2016. Registration may be online (you’ll need your

Power School Log in and Password) During this time you can also pick up:

Vocational: refer to their website (usually have rolling admissions, every 6 weeks)

Military: take the ASVAB and meet with a recruiter of the military branch you plan to serve for.

* May 1st – Statement to Intent to Register (SIR) due for 4yr colleges.

****Before you graduate, submit an official transcript request form to notify the LRHS Registrar when and to what college you want your official graduated transcript mailed to.****

IMPORTANT 12TH GRADE DEADLINES…FINANCIAL AID

1st semester: Look up scholarships, ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the people you are

asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) Create your FSA ID online at https://fsaid.ed.gov (it will be the students and parents electronic

signature on the FAFSA)

Cal-Grant: At LRHS we submit your GPA’s electronically to the California Student Aid Commission (if you don’t want us to submit them for you, our counseling office has an opt out form parents/students can fill out and turn in. www.calgrants.org

CSS/Financial Aid Profile: certain private schools require it and there is a fee for each campus. https://profileonline.collegeboard.com

For the class of 2017 and on, we were informed that starting in October of Senior year, you can begin to submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). California’s deadline is March 2nd www.fafsa.ed.gov

2nd semester: Continue to look up scholarships, ask for letters of recommendation (make sure to give the

people you are asking a letter of rec. from plenty of time) Verify / Update the information on the Student Aid Report (SAR) If the college you are attending asks for further documentation, make sure to provide them in a

timely manner.
