“FASTING”Our church is in the midst of a 21 day fast. The fast started Wednesday, January 2 nd and will end Tuesday, January 22nd. In tonight’s lesson we will look at some basic principles of fasting and then answer questions you may have to help you with your fast.

1. What is Fasting? Fasting is a specific time that you refrain from physical food for spiritual reasons. (Joel 1:14)

2. What is the Purpose of Fasting?To deepen your relationship with God through Bible Study and prayer. You also fast when you need answers for specific requests, strongholds, or other breakthroughs in your life. (Psalm 42:1; Matthew 5:6, 6:16-18)

3. Types of Fasting Normal – Eliminate solid food but drink liquids. (Daniel 10:3) Absolute – Eliminate both solid food and liquids. This should only be done for a short

period of time - 1 to 3 days. (Acts 9:8-9) Partial – Eliminate selected items like fried food, dessert, cold drinks, etc. This is also

called the Daniel fast. (Daniel 1:12)

4. How Long to Fast? The duration of a fast varies. The Bible gives several times:

1 Day – 1st Samuel 7:5-6 3 Days – Acts 9:9;

21 Days – Daniel 10:3 40 Days – Exodus 34:27-28

5. What Times to Fast? Totally up to you depending on your work schedule: 6:00 a.m.-12:00 noon; 6:00 a.m.3:00 p.m.; 6:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; 6:00 p.m.-midnight; 12:00 noon-6:00 p.m.

6. Are there other types of Fasting? Some believers choose to fast from television, internet, video games, etc., during their time of fasting.

7. Suggestions for Your Time of Fasting Determine the purpose of your fast and write them down. Keep a journal during your fast. This should contain specific prayer requests and spiritual

insights gained during your fast. Skipping meals alone will not result in a meaningful fast! You must set aside time to pray

and read the Bible.Final word of caution: Individuals on any kind of medication should consult with your doctor before participating in the fast.
