RESIDENTS IN Ferryhill are joining forces with council workers to tackle green issues.
Durham County Coun-cil’s Community Action Team (CAT) has just begun an 11 week pro-ject in Dean Bank, which will see it addressing concerns raised by local people and dealing with
issues linked to hous-ing, the environment and health.
The Community Action Scheme involves the council’s staff and mem-bers, and its partners, dealing with empty prop-erties to try and bring them back into use, clear-ing rubbish dumped in gardens and on village
streets and helping with improvements to build-ings and abandoned land.
Partners include Dur-ham Constabulary, County Durham and Dar-lington Fire and Rescue Service, environmental charity Groundwork, busi-nesses and housing asso-ciations.
Members of the com-
munity are being encour-aged to get involved and let the team know which issues they would like to see the focus on.
Council staff were at Dean Bank Literary Insti-tute on Tuesday 17th April to get feedback from res-idents on issues of con-

“Not everyone likes using the internet or the telephone to bank...
A PETITION opposing the closure of Ferryhill’s last remaining bank has garnered over 1,000 sig-natures.
Sedgefield MP Phil Wil-son has also shown his support for the campaign against NatWest’s deci-sion to close its doors in the town.
Resident Hannah Smal-ley, who has been encour-aging people to sign, commented, I believe the closure takes away choice from local residents in the way they want to bank.
“Not everyone likes using the internet or telephone banking. You can’t beat walking into a bank branch and talking to someone across the counter. That personal contact is important.”
Phil Wilson has pledged to present the petition to the House of Commons stating, “Over 1,000 peo-ple have signed the peti-tion which shows the strength of feeling in the town.”

These will take place every Tues-day from 24th April to 5th June, from 10-11am at the 4 Together Partnership office, 3-5 Haig Terrace, DL17 8NR. delivered schemes in 25 locations across the county.
“We have achieved some real success in pre-vious schemes and are looking forward to work-ing with residents and partners in Dean Bank to identify and then tackle the environmental and housing issues that mat-ter to local people.
“I’d encourage as many residents as possible to get involved and help us make a difference.”
The scheme will run until late June. To find out more, visit www.durham.gov.uk/cat, email [email protected] or phone 03000 261 016.

After the engagement session partners will meet and put together an action plan based on the priorities put forward by residents. In previous locations actions have included a community lit-ter pick, additional patrols

poetry cornerPinafores
By Nancy Hardy, Ferryhill
Sunday Dinner over, washing up complete
My Mam put on a clean apron
Without it she was ‘incomplete’
The first pinafore I can recollect
Was an all over garment with tapes at the back
Worn by my Grandmother, and it often was black.
The wrap around pinafore came on the scene
A gift from Heaven, or so it seemed
It fit every shape, no matter what size
You could alter your shape when you tied the ties.
And then came the apron, pretty and frilly
Not very functional, sometimes quite silly
As a nurse, aprons were part of my day
Changed every day, come what may.
Brilliant white! Starched within in inch of their life!
Times have changed, they don’t look as nice
A plastic apron seems to suffice.

IT PROVED to be a good weekend for the Ferryhill Town Youth Under 10s as they attempted to catch up on a backlog of fix-tures playing at home on both Saturday and Sun-day morning.
On Saturday they hosted Billingham Juniors and won convincingly 6-1.
A hat-trick from Marc was added to with goals from William, Reuban and Aaron.
The second game of the morning saw the home side winning again with the highlight being a thunderbolt of a strike by Kareem for his first goal for the club!
On Sunday it was the turn of 21st Allstar Jets to visit the Rec. and once again Ferryhill took all three points winning by a convincing 11-0 margin.
Hat-tricks from Marc (again), William and Zach were were supplemented by a goal each for Aaron and Reuban.
The second game was a similar scoreline, just with a couple more goals added and another clean sheet too.
Reuban was given the man of the match award over the two games.
Coach, Paul McKeown said: “It was nice to win both games but the foot-ball was also very good.
“Plenty of players were involved and enjoy-ing football across the whole of the weekend’s matches.
“Well done to Aidan, Carlton, William, George, Zach, Aaron, Marc, Jamie, Addison, Reuban, Saman-tha, Layton, Kareem and John-Robert.”
A GOOD WEEK FOR TOWN YOUTH UNDER 10S
FERRYHILL CELTIC trav-elled to Division Two side East Rainton on Sun-day 15th April as strong favourites to progress to the final of the Durham Sport League Cup.
But their hosts had other ideas and pulled off a shock win to dump the Premier Division side out of the cup at the semi finals stage.
Celtic began the match on the front foot and cre-ated several goalscoring chances throughout the first half, but it was the hosts who soaked up the pressure and broke the deadlock on the half hour.
With a cup final at stake, Celtic returned purpose-fully to the field for the second period but the outcome was identical to the first half.
For all their endeavour, Celtic could not find the net and East Rainton dou-bled their lead on the hour mark.
Try as they might, Celtic could not find a way to unlock the second divi-sion side’s defense and it was the underdogs who progressed to the cup final, engineering a clas-sic cup upset in the pro-cess.
Celtic will have another chance at reaching a final this season when they face Witton Park Rose & Crown in the semi-final of the Bishop Auckland Heart Foundation Cup on Sunday 22nd April.
Their opponents cur-rently lead the Wear Valley Sunday League Division One.
Witton Park beat Coun-don Miners Arms 4-1 to reach the semi finals with Celtic progressing by the same scoreline against Durham County.
Kick off at the Witton Park Memorial Field is at 10.30am.
Meanwhile, Celtic’s neighbours and Pre-mier Division rivals, Fer-ryhill Dynamoes, gave themselves a chance at remaining in the top divi-sion with a 3-2 home win over Brandon Sports Club to put themselves within reach of safety.
A double from Vincent Gash and another from Christopher Devine sealed the win with Andrew Mor-ris and Michael Fort reply-ing for Brandon.
The proverbial six-pointer puts Dynamoes within three points of Brandon, who are fourth
bottom, but Dynamoes have a game in hand.
Victory in that game would lift Dynamoes from second bottom out of the relegation places by virtue of a better goal difference than Brandon, who would drop into the bottom three.
With four games left for Dynamoes, they have a crucial period coming up, playing three of their final four games in the next ten days.
As the Chapter goes to press, they take on bot-tom club, Washington Cross Keys on Tuesday (17th April) in the knowl-edge that victory will lift them out of the relegation places.
They will also have an eye on other results the same evening as their relegation threatened rivals, Sacriston Colliery and Brandon also have games, against third placed Newton Aycliffe Huntsman and mid-table Chilton respectively.
Then, on Sunday 22nd, they must face the league leaders, Sherburn Village before, on Thursday 26th, potentially sealing their destiny at home in the derby against Celtic.
