l ormon _j’- SOClatlons A Mosaic of Mormon Culture The Departments of Anthropology and Archaeology, Art History, English, Geography, and History, and the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University will sponsor a Symposium, "A Mosaic of Mormon Culture" to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Symposium is to be held October 2 and 3, 1980, on Brigham Young University Campus under the auspices of Special Courses and Conferences. Interested persons are invited to propose papers, presentations, or complete sessions. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel, and should be received by March 15, 1980. They may be sent to any of the members of the steering committee, who are: Thomas G. Alexander, Charles Redd Center; James B. Allen, History; C. Mark Hamilton, Art and Architectural History; Richard H. Jackson, Geography; Neal E. Lambert, English; and John L. Sorenson, Anthropology and Archaeology. All are at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah 84602. The symposium will deal with Mormon culture in its broadest aspects--the beliefs, social forms, and material traits of life and thought. Mormon culture thus defined includes the material objects, intellectual symbols, language, and related manifestations, characteristic of life among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in any nation, which distinguish them from those who are not LDS. The evidence of this Mormon culture may be exhibited through the landscape, artifacts, literature, behavior, visual arts, performances, folklore, humor, music, internal tradition, graffiti, or other manifestations. In general, the symposium committee will consider only proposals which aim at interpreting the culture rather than only describing it. Papers and presentations may include but are not limited to: 1. Scholarly analyses, discussions or comparisons; 2. Exhibits or visual presentations; 3. Performances or demonstrations; or 4. Combinations of these. Tired, buttocks dragging a bit, they look empty-handed, empty-bagged, but for a skinny red fox slung on a lance. The dogs too are lean, low-hung, though one fat pup still frisks. The villagers below, tiny blots of stopped action, fish through the ice of ponds or skate on it. Gray ice, the same gray as the sky: the blank nullity back of everything. The elder Pieter Brueghel’s "Hunters in the Snow," reproduced as the cover of David Kranes’ collection of short stories by the same splendid tire. It’s a richly pleasing, quietly disturbing painting. The stories, at their best, please and disturb too--with their hunters "in the late blizzard of time" that blurs tracks, blurs home, blurs selves. I like some less than others. "The Wishbone" (the sort of well-made story that gets an A in a writing workshop), about two sixteen-year-old lovers who decide to be "older," moves me less than "Diving Lesson," which gropes (sometimes awkwardly) after the enigma of father and son. Surprisingly (since I’m not a fantasy fan), I liked some of the non-realistic stories best. Maybe "Peterson’s Stones" gets too wild with its old Indian whose granddaughter’s skin bears the stigmata of industrial America--"a cufflink, an amphetamine capsule, teeth of a zipper, a small cathode tube"--just as the sedimentary stones bear fossil imprints of subway tokens, Shell credit cards, watchband ribbing; maybe the whole thing’s too neatly allegorical, as fantasies sometimes are. So try "The Frame Lover," or try the last one, my own favorite, "The Phantom Mercury of Nevada": "This is not science fiction. This is real! I swear...Real--and such a mystery!" "Why do people disappear?" No answer to that: but how in this story, how Ross and LaVelle vanish from the narrator, is fantastically on target. In the other mode, I’m left rather fiat by what seems mere topicality (the feminine generation gap) in "Marianna" and turned off by the sexual and moral violence (not porn, though) of "Cordials." But then there’s "Hunt" with its shrewd recording of an artist’s marriage cracking up in a New England winter: "And Hunt wept. Goddamn Brueghel, he thought: goddamn his truth. "" Kranes does what good storytellers have always done: brings news. How it’s going out there. In "Little Sister" he can tell you how it goes for a runaway girl losing herself in New York City--high, hungry, and wan. Or in "Dealer" he can tell you how it goes for a drifter who senses his life "soon would be different" as a casino dealer in Jackpot, Nevada. Maybe you’d just as soon not know, and maybe just as soon not be teased about what’s real and what’s fantasy, though lots of storytellers since Cervantes have teased just so. One nice thing about short stories--they require less investment of time than an episode of"Mork and Mindy." And are lots more likely to pay off better. inflated for only 123 pages. But figure itthis way: ten stories for six bucks is sixtycents a story. A bargain by any standard,or at least a fair risk.

Short stories may be fairly obsolete asa popular and commercial genre: fewerpaying magazines print them (exceptmaybe pop sentimentality, trueconfessions, science fiction, porn ofvarying hardness), the hacks have goneto TV, and Brooks and Warren long agocaptured the artists for academicexamination--a mixed blessing. Butsmall quarterlies, university presses (likethe U. of Utah issuing this book),

shoestring presses, and even anoccasional commercial house stillsupport the habit of serious writers andof common readers, those alert, choosy,literate but not always "literary" folkwith whom Dr. Johnson and VirginiaWoolf delighted to concur. A smallbunch, but we like an occasional goodstory, and we’re willing to hunt.

dateChurch and StateSeveral Utah state legislative leadersadmitted recently that they participatedin using the state’s legislative press toprint newsletters and other materials forthe LDS Church.

House Speaker James V. Hansen,R-Farmington, who is also President ofthe Farmington Stake, admitted hesigned a check to the printing office for$132 worth of printing for the stakePrimary Association. "I guess I’m justgoing to have to face it," said the Speakerwhen asked about the transaction. Oneof the bishops in Speaker Hansen’sstake, J. Leon Sorenson, Farmington 2ndWard, also admitted church printingprojects were run off on the state press.

Rep. Hansen said the printing office hadbeen told to take care of legislativeprinting first, then other state agencyprinting, then "to keep them busy,"private printing. "But I realize now it iswrong to compete with private printersso an order has gone out banning anykind of private printing," the Republicanleader said. All but one of the privateprinting jobs was for Mormon activities.(S.L. Tribune, 13 January 1980)

Church-College TiesUtah colleges and universities are tooclosely tied to the Mormon Church, saysa Utah State University forestryprofessor. Dr. Ronald Lanner told theUSU Institutional Council the ties are aviolation of the Constitution whichguarantees separation of church andstate.Lanner claims the USU bookstore has

allocated over 100 feet to religiousmaterials and only 46 feet to referencematerials, 15 to psychology, and five tophilosophy.In addition, he alleged that high-levelschool administrative decisions aremade by Mormon officials. In the past 12years, three USU presidents and ninevice-presidents have been Mormon.He asserted that rules were broken toaccomodate members of the LDSChurch. Leaves are supposedly grantedto faculty for the betterment of USU andthe advancement of the faculty member.But leaves of three years duration aregranted for LDS missions. George RomneyThirty-two Michigan state lawmakershave demanded the resignation offormer Governor George Romney fromthe Wayne State University Board ofGovernors for his claim that many EqualRights Amendment backers are "moralperverts."

Rep. Mary Brown, D-Kalamazoo, told anews conference Romney’s statementsare an insult to the legislature, GovernorWilliam G. Milliken, and to the womenof Michigan. The legislature severalyears ago voted in favor of the ERA.Milliken has been a strong backer of theamendment.

Romney, now a regional representativeof the Council of the Twelve Apostles, inan interview in the Detroit News said theamendment is "basically the product of

many individuals who had been makinga concerted attack on the family and onmorality as taught by the prophetsthrough the ages."

In Utah, Governor Scott M. Mathesoncharacterized Romney’s comments asinept and inaccurate. The governor, along-time supporter of the ERA, referredto the 1896 Utah Constitution which,although worded differently, containsthe same "essence and commitment" astoday’s ERA.

In a January 14,1980, letter to the DeseretNews T. Helen Backe recalled attending abanquet several years ago in Salt LakeCity where Romney’s wife Lenore spokein support of the ERA before a largecongregation of mainly Mormonbusinesswomen. "Is she a pervert?"asked Ms. Backe.

Truth TellingIn a lecture at the Salt Lake Public Libraryon 30 October 1979, David Briscoe, anaward-winning news editor for theAssociated Press, addressed the topic,"Can the True Church Afford to Tell theTruth?"

Asked Briscoe, a life-long member of theChurch, "Can the Mormon Church,which claims to be the only church ofGod, maintain a climate in which itsmembers continue to learn new truths,

in which reporters and even criticsopenly deal with questions about theChurch and in which the Church itselfresponds turthfully, honestly, andopenly to each new issue?"

"I firmly believe," said Briscoe, "thatevery action of the Church or its leadersis subject to scrutiny. In fact, as aMormon and a journalist, I believe itessential that every important act orpronouncement be examinedobjectively, that no churchly declarationescape either the conscience of theindividual challenged to accept it nor thelegitimate questions of the journalistobligated to report it...As a journalist, Imust approach the Church in the sameway I would any other largeinstitution--private orgovernment--that affects the lives ofhundreds of thousands, even millions ofpeople."Briscoe suggested a maxim which hehoped Latter-day Saints might accept:"’Questions cannot destroy truth. Questionsbuild truth, whether that truth is revealed orexperienced. It was, after all, questions inthe mind of Joseph Smith that led to therestoration of the gospel. And, it isquestions in the minds of non-Mormoncontacts that lead them toconversion...Too many Church leadersfeel that questions--whether from

concerned members, apostates orprobing newsmen--are threats."

"For whatever reason, the Church is notalways open, honest, or truthful.Whether we are talking about theprophet .... other General Authorities,the Church public relations arm or theMormon missionaries who knock at yourdoor, we find all too often a lack ofcandor which ought not to characterizesuch a lofty institution."

Briscoe identified several areas in whichhe felt the Church had been "less thanopen and even deceptive to a degree":image building through public relations,use of the Church by various politicalgroups, behind-the-scenesmanipulation in the anti-pornographyand liquor-by-the-drink issues,unwillingness to discuss Blackpriesthood policy and Church finances,the existence and extent ofpsychological, social, and moralproblems of its members, appearance ofunanimity among the GeneralAuthorities, purposive distortion ofother groups, disclosure of projectedchanges and their reasons, and Churchhistory.

Briscoe commented that there are somegood signs indicating frankness on thepart of General Authorities. Forexample, in a speech which receivedalmost no publicity, Bruce R. McConkietold a BYU audience, speaking on theblack revelation: "Forget everything thatI have said, or what President BrighamYoung or George Q. Cannon orwhomever has said in days past that iscontrary to the present r6velation. Wespoke with limited understanding andwithout the light and knowledge thathas now come into the world."

Said Briscoe, "When a GeneralAuthority admits error, that is a majorstep forward in the quest for honesty andopenness in the Church. Now, if onlyElder McConkie had made that speech inGeneral Conference."

He concluded with the observation,"The word of God, whether it comesfrom scripture or the mouth of theMormon prophet, or any other Churchsource, cannot thrive amid deletion,distortion, or deception. As the Churchgrows, the role of the objective journalistbecomes ever more important, the needfor honesty and openness ever morecritical."

Two Missionaries MurderedA 24-year-old unemployed laborer hasbeen arrested and charged with themurders of two elderly female Mormonmissionaries whose bodies were foundin a shopping center parking lot in North

Charleston, South Carolina, onDecember 15, 1979. The victims wereElizabeth W. King, 66, of Kaysville,Utah, and Jane Ruth Cannell Teuscher,65, of Fish Haven, Idaho.

James Arthur Brown, who was free on a$5,000 bond in connection with an attackon a Berkeley County woman inOctober, was arrested at his parents’home. The arrest occurred after policepursued several leads, including entriesin a diary kept by the missionaries.

IRS and BYUBrigham Young University has beenordered to show cause why it should notobey an Internal Revenue Servicesummons requiring names of donors ofcertain gifts received in 1976, 1977, and1978. Chief Judge Aldon J. Anderson,U.S. District Court for Utah, issued theorder requiring the school to show causebefore U.S. Magistrate Daniel Alsup.The action follows a summons BYUspumed as illegal.

Request for the summons was based onmore than 150 IRS audits showing avalue claimed for the gifts at over $18million. The IRS contends the correctvalue to be $2 million.

BYU President Dallin Oaks has calleduntrue implications by the IRS thatdonors took exaggerated deductions andhas resisted IRS orders to turn over thenames of the donors.

Church and StateA Church welfare farm in BonnevilleCounty, Idaho, has lost its property taxexemption. County commissionersconcurred unanimously with an earlierruling by assessor John Wasden andrevoked the exempt status of the480-acre farm near Osgood, northwest ofIdaho Falls. The farm will pay andestimated tax of $2300.

County attorney Robert Fanning saidthat under Idaho law, church property is

two-thirds of the farm’s crops toMickelsen.David M. McConkie, a church attorney,said the Church was aware of the statelease prohibitions but consideredMickelsen to be an employee of thestakes. McConkie argued the countyshould not render a strict interpretationof the agreement because proceeds fromthe farm help support the Church’swelfare system which benefits the state.

Judge CallisterFederal District Judge Marion J. Callister,who is hearing a major challenge to theproposed Equal Rights Amendment, hasbeen released from his position asregional representative to the Council ofthe Twelve Apostles.

The action taken on October 31, 1979,was not made known to the judge untillate November and was not announcedpublically until the end of December.Judge Callister was not informed of whyhe had been released but felt it wasbecause of his heavy judicial work loadand the need to spend more time withhis family.

Since the excommunication of SoniaJohnson there has been renewedpressure for his removal from the casedue to the Church’s official opposition tothe ERA. Judge Callister, however, has

stated that he has no obligation to theChurch to interpret the law in anymanner other than that required underthe Constitution.

Freeman InstituteMark A. Benson, a regionalrepresentative of the Council of theTwelve Apostles, has been appointedVice-president and Director ofDevelopment for the Freeman Institute.The appointment was announced byCleon W. Skousen, founder andpresident of the Institute and professorof religion at Brigham Young University.The Institute sponors seminars teachinga conservative interpretation ofconstitutional principles.The new vice-president is the son of EzraTaft Benson, President of the Council ofTwelve Apostles.

Wellsville TabernaclePriesthood members of the WellsvilleStake have voted to recommendbuilding a new stake center behind thehistoric tabernacle which dominates thisnorthern Utah community. A decisionon the fate of the 76-year-oldmeetinghouse has been postponedaccording to Stake President Donald J.Jeppesen.

The agenda of the priesthood meeting

included review of a report receivedfrom the Church physical facilitiesdepartment. The alternatives were todemolish the tabernacle, construct anaddition and remodel the old building,or construct a new facility. Therecommendation will be sent to theChurch building department in Salt LakeCity for approval before a final decisionis made.Debby Goates, chairman of theConcerned Citizens for the Preservationof the Wellsville Tabernacle, said shedislikes the prospect of two churches onthe town square. Mrs. Goates, who haspresented the tabernacle for nominationto the National Historic Register, ishoping to create a Wellsville NationalHistoric District in which the gothic styletabernacle would be the focal point.

The monumental tabernacle was built in1902-08 and was dedicated June 28, 1908by President Joseph F. Smith. Madeentirely of native materials, the edificewas designed by architect C. T. Barrett.Major modifications of the tabernaclehave included lowering the original 135foot tall tower, replacing the ornamentaltracery in the gothic windows, andpainting the brick and stone buildingwhite. The imposing scale of thetabernacle remains as does the unusualtwo-level, central-plan chapel.
