Hymns 5 COMMAND THY BLESSING FROM

    ABOVE

1 Command Thy blessing from above, O God! on all assembled here: Behold us with a Father's love, While we look up with filial fear. 2 Command Thy blessing, Jesus, Lord! May we Thy true disciples be; Speak to each heart the mighty word, Say to the weakest, Follow Me. 3 Command Thy blessing, in this hour, Spirit of truth! and fill the place With humbling and exalting pow'r, With quick'ning and confirming grace. 4 With Thee and Thine forever found, May all the souls who here unite, With harps and songs Thy throne surround, Rest in Thy love, and reign in light.

    6 THE SPACIOUS FIRMAMENT ON

    HIGH

1 The spacious firmament on high, With all the blue ethereal sky, And spangled heavens, a shining frame Their great Original proclaim. Th’unwearied sun, from day to day, Does his Creator’s powers display, And publishes to every land The work of an almighty hand. 2 Soon as the evening shades prevail, The moon takes up the wondrous tale, And nightly to the listening earth Repeats the story of her birth; Whilst all the stars that round her burn, And all the planets in their turn, Confirm the tidings as they roll, And spread the truth from pole to pole. 3 What though in solemn silence all Move round this dark terrestrial ball? What though no real voice nor sound Amidst their radiant orbs be found? In reason’s ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice; Forever singing as they shine,

“The hand that made us is divine.” Amen.

    8 HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

1 Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity! 2 Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. 3 Holy, Holy, Holy! Tho the darkness hide Thee, Tho the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy - there is none beside Thee Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity. 4 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy Name in earth and sky and sea; Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

    10 STILL, STILL WITH THEE

1 Still, still with Thee - when purple morning breaketh, When the bird waketh, and the shadows flee; Fairer than morning, lovelier than daylight, Dawns the sweet consciousness - I am with Thee! 2 Alone with Thee amid the mystic shadows - The solemn hush of nature newly born; Alone with Thee in breathless adoration, In the calm dew and freshness of the morn! 3 Still, still with Thee - as to each newborn morning, A fresh and solemn splendor still is giv'n, So doth this blessed consciousness, awaking, Breathe each day nearness unto Thee and heav'n!

  • 5

4 When sinks the soul, subdued by toil, to slumber, Its closing eyes look up to Thee in prayer; Sweet the repose beneath Thy wings o’ershading, But sweeter still to wake and find Thee there! 5 So shall it be at last in that bright morning, When the soul waketh and life’s shadows flee; O in that hour, fairer than daylight dawning, Shall rise the glorious tho't - I am with Thee.

19 COME, WE THAT LOVE THE LORD

1 Come, we that love the Lord, And let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord, And thus surround the throne. 2 Let those refuse to sing Who never knew our God; But children of the heav'nly King May speak their joys abroad. 3 The hill of Zion yields A thousand sacred sweets Before we reach the heav’nly fields Or walk the golden streets, 4 Then let our songs abound And ev'ry tear be dry; We’re marching thru Emmanuel’s ground To fairer worlds on high.

    34 CROWN HIM WITH MANY

    CROWNS

1 Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne: Hark! how the heav'nly anthem drowns All music but its own! Awake, my soul, and sing Of Him who died for thee, and hail Him as thy matchless King Thru all eternity. 2 Crown Him the Lord of love: Behold His hands and side - Rich wounds, yet visible above, In beauty glorified; No angel in the sky Can fully bear that sight, But downward bends his wond'ring eye

At mysteries so bright. 3 Crown him the Lord of life: Who triumphed o'er the grave, Who rose victorious to the strife For those He came to save; His glories now we sing, Who died, and rose on high, Who died eternal life to bring, And lives that death may die. 4 Crown Him the Lord of heav'n: One with the Father known, One with the Spirit thru Him giv'n From yonder glorious throne. To Thee be endless praise, For Thou for us hast died; Be Thou, O Lord, thru endless days Adored and magnified.

    36 HIGH IN THE HEAVENS,

    ETERNAL GOD

1 High in the heavens, eternal God, Thy goodness in full glory shines; Thy truth shall break through every cloud That veils and darkens Thy designs. 2 Forever firm Thy justice stands, As mountains their foundations keep; Wise are the wonders of Thy hands; Thy judgments are a mighty deep. 3 My God, how excellent thy grace, Whence all our hope and comfort spring! The sons of Adam in distress Fly to the shadow of Thy wing. 4 Life, like a fountain, rich and free, Springs from the presence of my Lord; And in thy light our souls shall see The glories promised in thy word. Amen.

    39 THEE WILL I LOVE

1 Thee will I love, my strength, my tow'r, Thee I adore my joy, my crown, Thee will I love with all my pow'r, I love Thy name, and Thine alone; Thee will I love, till Holy Ghost fire Fill all my soul with pure desire. 2. In darkness foolishly I strayed, I sought Thee, yet from Thee I roved,

  • 6

Too long my selfish thoughts obeyed The creature more than Thee I loved; But now Thy truth at last I see, ’Tis by Thy light it leadeth me. 3 I thank Thee, O Thou Righteous Sun, For Thy bright beams on me have shined; Thou hast the Tempter overthrown My woes, removed and healed my mind; I thank Thee for Thy quick'ning voice Bids my poor heart in Thee rejoice. 4 Thee will I love, my joy, my crown; Thee I adore my Lord, my God; Thee will I love beneath Thy frown I see Thy smile Thy shepherd's rod; Let good and kindred pass away; With Thee I'll dwell in endless day!

    49 HOW GREAT THOU ART!

1 O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, Thy pow’r throughout the universe displayed! Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; How great Thou art, how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee; How great Thou art, how great Thou art! 2 When thru the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze, 3 And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in- That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin! 4 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration

And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!

77 SAVIOR, AGAIN TO THY DEAR

    NAME

1 Savior, again to Thy dear name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise; Once more we bless Thee ere our worship cease, Then, lowly kneeling, wait Thy word of peace. 2 Grant us Thy peace upon our homeward way: With Thee began, with Thee shall end the day; Guard thou the lips from sin, the hearts from shame, That in this house have called upon Thy Name. 3 Grant us Thy peace, Lord, thru the coming night, Turn Thou for us its darkness into light; From harm and danger keep Thy children free, For dark and light are both alike to Thee. 4 Grant us Thy peace thru-out our earthly life, Our balm in sorrow and our stay in strife; Then, when Thy voice shall bid our conflict cease, Call us, O Lord, to Thine eternal peace.

    100 HE LIFTED ME

1 In lovingkindness Jesus came My soul in mercy to reclaim, And from the depths of sin and shame Thru grace He lifted me. (He lifted me.) Refrain: From sinking sand He lifted me, With tender hand He lifted me; From shades of night to plains of light, O praise His name, He lifted me! 2 He called me long before I heard, Before my sinful heart was stirred, But when I took Him at His Word, Forgiv’n He lifted me. (He lifted me.) 3 His brow was pierced with many a thorn,

  • 7

His hands by cruel nails were torn, When from my guilt and grief, forlorn, In love He lifted me. (He lifted me) 4 Now on a higher plane I dwell, And with my soul I know tis’ well, Yet how or why, I cannot tell, He should have lifted me. (He lifted me)

    112 REDEEMED

1 Redeemed – how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed thru His infinite mercy – His child, and forever, I am. Refrain: Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed, redeemed, His child, and forever, I am. 2 Redeemed and so happy in Jesus, No language my rapture can tell; I know that the light of His presence With me doth continually dwell. 3 I think of my blessed Redeemer, I think of Him all the day long; I sing, for I cannot be silent; His love is the theme of my song. 4 I know I shall see in His beauty The King in whose law I delight; Who lovingly guardeth my footsteps And giveth me songs in the night.

    122 GLORY TO HIS NAME

1 Down at the cross where my Saviour died, Down where for cleansing from sin I cried, There to my heart was the blood applied – Glory to His name! Refrain: Glory to His name, Glory to His name; There to my heart was the blood applied – Glory to His name! 2 I am so wondrously saved from sin, Jesus so sweetly abides within; There at the cross where He took me in – Glory to His name!

3 O precious fountain that saves from sin, I am so glad I have entered in; There Jesus saves me and keeps me clean – Glory to His name! 4 Come to this fountain so rich and sweet, Cast thy poor soul at the Saviour’s feet; Plunge in today, and be made complete – Glory to His name!

    178 AT THE CROSS

1 Alas! And did my Savior bleed? And did my Sov’reign die? Would He devote that sacred head For such a worm as I? Refrain: At the cross, at the cross Where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away It was there by faith I received my sight, And now I am happy all the day! 2 Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! 3 Well might the sun in darkness hide And shut his glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker, died For man the creature’s sin. 4 But drops of grief can ne’er repay The debt of love I owe: Here, Lord, I give myself away ‘Tis all that I can do!

    183 JESUS PAID IT ALL

1 I hear the Savior say, “Thy strength indeed is small; Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in Me thine all in all.” Refrain: Jesus paid it all, All to Him I owe; Sin had left a crimson stain- He washed it white as snow. 2 Lord, now indeed I find

  • 8

Thy power and Thine alone, Can change the leper’s spots And melt the heart of stone. 3 For nothing good have I Whereby Thy grace to claim, I’ll wash my garments white In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb. 4 And when before the throne I stand in Him complete, “Jesus died my soul to save,” My lips shall still repeat.

    186 WOUNDED FOR ME

1 Wounded for me, wounded for me, There on the cross He was wounded for me; Gone my transgressions, and now I am free, All because Jesus was wounded for me. 2 Dying for me, dying for me, There on the cross He was dying for me; Now in His death my redemption I see, All because Jesus was dying for me. 3 Risen for me, risen for me, Up from the grave He has risen for me; Now evermore from death's sting I am free, All because Jesus has risen for me. 4 Living for me, living for me, Up in the skies He is living for me; Daily He’s pleading and praying for me, All because Jesus is living for me. 5 Coming for me, coming for me, One day to earth He is coming for me; Then with what joy His dear face I shall see, Oh, how I praise Him! He's coming for me.

    188 O SACRED HEAD, NOW

    WOUNDED

1 O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded With thorns, Thine only crown; How art Thou pale with anguish, With sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish Which once was bright as morn! 2 What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered

Was all for sinners' gain; Mine, mine was the dread transgression, But Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Saviour, 'Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favor; Vouchsafe to me Thy grace. 3 What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? Oh, make me Thine forever! And, should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never Outlive my love to Thee.

    199 THE OLD RUGGED CROSS

1 On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suff’ring and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain. Refrain: So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it someday for a crown. 2 O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary. 3 In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For t’was on that old cross Jesus suffered and died To pardon and sanctify me. 4 To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away, Where His glory forever I’ll share.

  • 9

    201 ACCORDING TO THY GRACIOUS

    WORD

1 According to Thy gracious Word, In meek humility, This will I do, my dying Lord, I will remember Thee. 2 Thy body, broken for my sake, My bread from heav'n shall be; Thy testamental cup I take, And thus remember Thee. 3 Gethsemane can I forget? Or there Thy conflict see; Thine agony and bloody sweat, And not remember Thee? 4 When to the cross I turn my eyes, And rest on Calvary, O Lamb of God, my Sacrifice! I must remember Thee. 5 Remember Thee, and all Thy pains, And all Thy love to me: Yea, while a breath, a pulse remains, Will I remember Thee. 6 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and memory flee, When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come, Jesus, remember me.

    202 GO TO DARK GETHSEMANE

1 Go to dark Gethsemane, ye that feel the tempter’s power; Your Redeemer’s conflict see, watch with Him one bitter hour, Turn not from His griefs away; learn of Jesus Christ to pray. 2 See Him at the judgment hall, beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned; See him meekly bearing all! Love to man His soul sustained. Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; learn of Christ to bear the cross. 3 Calvary’s mournful mountain climb; there, adoring at His feet, Mark that miracle of time, God’s own sacrifice complete.

“It is finished!” hear Him cry; learn of Jesus Christ to die.

    203 HE LIVES

1 I serve a risen Saviour; He's in the world today. I know that He is living, whatever men may say. I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, And just the time I need Him He's always near. Refrain: He lives! He lives! Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life's narrow way. He lives! He lives! Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart. 2 In all the world around me I see His loving care, And though my heart grows weary I never will despair. I know that He is leading, thro' all the stormy blast; The day of His appearing will come at last. 3 Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian! Lift up your voice and sing Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King! The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find, None other is so loving, so good and kind.

    247 CLEANSE ME

    1 Search me, O God, And know my heart today; Try me, O Savior, know my thoughts, I pray. See if there be Some wicked way in me; Cleanse me from ev'ry sin And set me free. 2 I praise Thee, Lord, For cleansing me from sin; Fulfill Thy Word, and make me pure within. Fill me with fire where once I burned with shame;

  • 10

Grant my desire to magnify Thy name. 3 Lord, take my life and make it wholly Thine; Fill my poor heart with Thy great love divine. Take all my will, my passion, self and pride; I now surrender, Lord - in me abide. 4 O Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee; Send a revival - start the work in me. Thy Word declares Thou wilt supply our need; For blessings now, O Lord, I humbly plead.

    263 GLORIOUS THINGS OF THEE

    ARE SPOKEN

1 Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for His own abode: On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose? With salvation’s walls surrounded, Thou mayst smile at all thy foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal love, Well supply thy sons and daughters And all fear of want remove: Who can faint while such a river Ever flows their thirst to assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the Giver, Never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hov'ring, See the cloud and fire appear For a glory and a cov’ring, Showing that the Lord is near! Glorious things of Thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God; He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for His own abode.

    314 NEARER, STILL NEARER

1 Nearer, still nearer, close to Thy heart,

Draw me, my Savior—so precious Thou art; Fold me, oh, fold me close to Thy breast. Shelter me safe in that “Haven of Rest”, Shelter me safe in that “Haven of Rest.” 2 Nearer, still nearer, nothing I bring, Naught as an offr’ing to Jesus, my King; Only my sinful, now contrite heart. Grant me the cleansing Thy blood doth impart, Grant me the cleansing Thy blood doth impart. 3 Nearer, still nearer, Lord, to be Thine! Sin, with its follies, I gladly resign, All of its pleasures, pomp and its pride, Give me but Jesus, my Lord, crucified, Give me but Jesus, my Lord, crucified. 4 Nearer, still nearer, while life shall last. Till safe in glory my anchor is cast; Through endless ages ever to be Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to Thee, Nearer, my Savior, still nearer to Thee!

    355 DAY BY DAY

1 Day by day, and with each passing moment, Strength I find, to meet my trials here; Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear. He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure Gives unto each day what He deems best— Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure, Mingling toil with peace and rest. 2 Every day, the Lord Himself is near me With a special mercy for each hour; All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me, He Whose Name is Counselor and Pow'r. The protection of His child and treasure Is a charge that on Himself He laid; “As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,” This the pledge to me He made. 3 Help me then in every tribulation So to trust Thy promises, O Lord, That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation Offered me within Thy holy Word. Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,

  • 11

E'er to take, as from a father’s hand, One by one, the days, the moments fleeting, Till I reach the promised land.

435 THE BANNER OF THE CROSS

1 There’s a royal banner given for display To the soldiers of the King; As an ensign fair we lift it up today, While as ransomed ones we sing. Refrain: Marching on, marching on, For Christ count everything but loss! And to crown Him King, toil and sing, ’Neath the banner of the cross! 2 Though the foe may rage and gather as the flood, Let the standard be displayed; And beneath its folds, as soldiers of the Lord, For the truth be not dismayed! 3 Over land and sea, wherever man may dwell, Make the glorious tidings known; Of the crimson banner now the story tell, While the Lord shall claim His own! 4 When the glory dawns—’tis drawing very near, It is hastening day by day— Then before our King the foe shall disappear, And the cross the world shall sway!

    450 TO THE WORK!

    1 To the work! To the work! We are servants of God;

Let us follow the path that our Master has trod; With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew, Let us do with our might what our hands find to do. Refrain: Toiling on, toiling on, Toiling on, toiling on, Let us hope, Let us watch, And labor till the Master comes. 2 To the work! To the work! Let the hungry be fed; To the fountain of life let the weary be led; In the cross and its banner our glory shall be, While we herald the tidings, “Salvation is free!” 3 To the work! To the work! There is labor for all; For the kingdom of darkness and error shall fall; And the name of Jehovah exalted shall be, In the loud swelling chorus, “Salvation is free!” 4 To the work! To the work! In the strength of the Lord, And a robe and a crown shall our labor reward, When the home of the faithful our dwelling shall be, And we shout with the ransomed, “Salvation is free!”

    DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

    Messages # 1 – 3

    1. What is, to you, the most significant aspect of Christ’s sacrifice? Explain.

    2. Why do people not mind hearing the name of God but cannot stand to hear the name of Jesus Christ? Why is His name so hateful to many?

    3. Have you rejected Christ before? Why did you reject Him? Did believers reject Christ when He walked on the earth and do they still reject Him today after His ascension to heaven?

    Message # 4 – 6

    1. Explain how Christ was wounded for us when He died 2,000 years ago.

    2. How does the revelation that Christ was led as a Lamb to the slaughter and was dumb impact you when you are suffering for Christ? Cite an example.

    3. What would you explain to someone who says that Jesus Christ did not die, because Jesus Himself said that like Jonah He would be buried in the belly of the earth three days and three nights (cf. Matthew 12:40), and Jonah did not die?
