CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION

To improve your verbal ability, improving vocabulary is very important. To stop increasing your

vocabulary is to stop your intellectual growth. A solid vocabulary is essential in every stage of

language learning. So, it is crucial that you learn vocabulary acquisition strategies to maximize your

vocabulary power. The English language is considered to have the largest vocabulary in the world

(Crystal, 2002). “Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be

THE IMPORTANCE ETYMOLOGY

Etymology is the study of the "roots" or origins of words. MAJORITY of words used in the

ENGLISH language have Latin or Greek roots. Many of the LANGUAGES spoken worldwide have

their origins in Latin or Greece. By understanding the Latin roots of words, many people can

decipher words, not only in ENGLISH but in multiple languages as well. There are many prefixes,

suffixes, and roots in both Latin and Greek used in much of the world’s most popular languages.

Languages derived from the Latin roots of words include Italian, French, Portuguese, Filipino,

Spanish, etc. In addition to these dialects, many Latin roots of words found their way into the English

language as well.

Etymology is the best way to build your vocabulary exponentially….in no time! Once your skill of

splitting or dissecting words and looking for their roots is formed, your command on English will

improve by leaps and bounds. This is because it is not just the word that tells you its meaning. It is

also the context in which it is used that tells you the meaning.

“Etymology is also critical for understanding MEDICAL and LEGAL terminology, as well as

in CHEMISTRY and also in ENGINEERING. It is the art of revealing the formation of a

word and the development of its meaning. The source of the word itself is Greek, etumos, “real,

true”, and thus the art is “finding the underlying or true meaning of words”. There is also the sense

of “root”, as in the history of a word, rather than its meaning”. Source

Etymology has all the attributes of what educational psychologists term meaningful learning. This is

a type of learning connected to prior learning, more highly retainable and generalizable, making it

superior to simple route learning of vocabulary. It can be very fascinating. It will help answer

questions like “Why does this word mean this?” or “How did this come to mean this?”

Etymological knowledge is beneficial as a tool for expanding vocabularies more permanently for

intermediate & advanced ESL students, test takers of SAT, IELTS, TOEFL, etc. Any exam like the

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) which deals with verbal ability can be dealt with easily if you have a

stack of etymological knowledge.
