“Unless a tree has borne blossoms in spring, you will vainly look for fruit on it in autumn” [Walter Scott]

It seems so fitting in the story of Square Chapel that, in spring, this time of new growth and rebirth, we will take possession of our fantastic new building and begin shaping it with our audiences, volunteers, friends and staff, building up to a full launch season in autumn.

2016 was an exciting year for Square Chapel as we saw the new building taking shape, moved to our temporary offices, ran a series of events with our ‘Other Rooms’ programme (13 films and plays in other spaces across Halifax) and moved back in to a remodelled building to run the rest of our exciting autumn and festive programme. We were always going to be faced with a choice between what might have been easier (closing Square Chapel for six months) and what we felt was right (working hard to continue with our performances and workshops whilst the building was in transition). Seeing people come together and witnessing some of the magical moments in our auditorium, we feel totally vindicated in this decision. We are incredibly proud and more than a little lucky that all of you: volunteers, audiences and supporters came with us on that journey.

Anyone who has been to us lately, will see how impressive the new building is starting to look and it’s still due for completion in Spring 2017. We are in the middle of planning a very exciting full launch season from Autumn and we’ll be building up through the summer, testing the new cinema, the new café and bar as well as having some great events lined up. The same warmth, individuality and magic that personifies Square Chapel will be present in our new food and film offerings and we’ll be open nearly all day, every day; we want to be THE place for people to come together in Halifax and we hope you’ll make that a reality.

This season we have carefully selected performances and films to celebrate the different areas of our programme and to whet your appetite for the coming seasons. Our Spring season includes great family and schools shows, a revival of the popular Godber classic ‘April in Paris’, two sensational music performances from brilliant new folk artists Three Cane Whale and Jim Moray; and in ‘Putting the Band Back Together’ an opportunity for all of us to relive our dreams of picking up an instrument, performing and making it happen. It’s a smaller season, but beautifully formed – these are our blossoms in spring and we hope you do come and share them whilst waiting for the fruit later in the year.

This season we’re introducing ‘Pay What You Can’ for some of our theatre shows. Pay What You Can is all about trust. It’s about you, making a judgement for yourself about what you can afford to pay for a show you won’t necessarily have heard of before – and us, trusting you to take a risk on something new. We’ve set three different price levels for guidance, all we ask is that you take a chance on something new for whatever price will encourage you to come along. We can promise a warm Square Chapel welcome and a cracking experience.

Welcome

I, Daniel Blake (2016) My Feral Heart (2016)

When an ill carpenter finds himself in need of state welfare, he meets a desperate single mother who needs the same thing. Together, the duo discovers that negotiating through the red tape is a challenge. Director Ken Loach, who recently turned 80, came out of retirement to make this moving film, saying he hoped it would influence welfare policy in the same way one of his very first films, Cathy Come Home, had changed political thinking on homelessness. See the Cannes Festival winning film that everyone’s talking about.

“A celebration of the decency and kinship of (extra)ordinary people.”

Mark Kermode - The Observer

“Ken Loach's welfare state polemic is blunt, dignified and brutally moving ”

The Guardian

Luke, an independent young man with Down's syndrome looks after his mother until she passes. He is then removed from his home by the authorities. This film follows Luke as he finds a way out and stumbles upon a wild and life changing friendship. This is a beautiful and touching film, with stunning cinematography, about discovery, home and new beginnings complimented with music by BAFTA nominee Barrington Pheloung.

We’re delighted to be included as one of the venues screening My Feral Heart, described by film critic Mark Kermode as “A richly rewarding film that casts a rather enchanting spell’“.

A United Kingdom (2016) Anthropoid (2016)

The much anticipated A United Kingdom portrays an interracial relationship that challenged the social mores of its time. In 1947, King of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) Seretse Khama (David Oyelowo) falls in love with London office worker Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike). Their controversial relationship generates fierce opposition not just from their families, but also from the British and South African governments. Based on true events, this is a film about a marriage that shook the world and a love that defeated an empire while exploring a complex and painful chapter in Britain's social history.

“With terrific warmth and idealism“ The Guardian

Starring the brilliant Jamie Dornan, Cillian Murphy and Toby Jones, this is a compelling and moving interpretation of a largely forgotten moment in European history. This powerful film is based on the extraordinary true events during World War II. Josef Gabčík (Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Dornan) are sent from Britain — which hosts the Czechoslovakian government in exile — with orders to take out SS bigwig Reinhard Heydrich, the architect behind the Final Solution, also known as the ‘Butcher of Prague’. This is Operation Anthropoid.

“Anthropoid contains one of the most authentic and nerve-jangling set-pieces of the year so far.“

Life, Animated (2016)

Director Roger Ross William's award-winning and remarkable new documentary Life, Animated focuses on autistic teenager Owen. It tells the story of his fascination with classic Disney animations and how they have given him the ability to make sense of the world. By interweaving classic Disney sequences with scenes from Owen’s life, the film explores how identification and empathy with characters like Simba, Jafar, and Ariel offer a conduit for him to catalogue his emotions and interpret reality as he deals with the challenges of growing up. Based on the best-selling book by Ron Suskind, this is a powerful coming-of-age tale, offering a moving insight into both the experience of autism and the transformative possibilities of cinema.

“Incredibly moving documentary, and a must-watch“

La La Land (2016)

The setting is contemporary Hollywood, the tone light and airy, the story simple, but lent immense verve by the style and the chemistry and sheer charisma by Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, who radiate charm, sincerity and vulnerability as they open-up to each other. They play wannabe movie star Mia and pianist Seb, both hobbled by frustrated ambition when they meet and fall in love. But success, when it finally arrives, comes at a personal cost.

Gosling and Stone give terrific performances in Whiplash director Damien Chazelle's musical romance. This is one you will want to see on the big screen.

Toni Erdmann (2016)

Toni Erdmann was hailed as one of the standout films of Cannes 2016, where it premiered in Competition (the first German film to debut there in 10 years) and won the Best Film award. Broad and outrageously funny, it depicts the relationship between a father and daughter. Winfried is a divorced teacher with a baffling penchant for wacky humour, frequently donning comedy wigs and false teeth. His daughter Ines – a sleek oil company advisor – is less amused by such jokes; but Winfried suspects she is unhappy and so kindly decides to show up at her offices in a new guise: that of 'Toni Erdmann'.

This is a highly original and utterly hilarious film that’s been selected as Germany's 2017 Oscar entry!

Manchester By the Sea (2016)

Casey Affleck stars as Lee Chandler, a solitary Boston janitor who after a family tragedy must return to his North Shore hometown, Manchester-by-the-Sea, to look after his brother’s son Patrick. There he must deal with caring for his nephew, coming back into contact with his ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and confronting his past.

Director Kenneth Lonergan’s absorbing drama has received praise from film festivals worldwide and classed as a must-see film!

“Manchester by the Sea,’ with searing performance from Casey Affleck, is must-see” New York Daily News

Unfolding Theatre in association with LittleMighty present Putting the Band Back Together

Pre-show music workshop

BIB Productions presents Simon Weston, My Life, My Story

Why do we stop playing instruments we once loved? What might make us start again? All those guitars propped up in bedrooms. Voices only heard in the shower. Drum kits taking up too much space in garages. It’s time to blow off the dust. We’re putting the band back together! Part riotous gig, part tender storytelling, Ross Millard (The Futureheads), Maria Crocker (The Letter Room) and Alex Elliott (Northern Stage) reveal epic emotions within people’s relationships with music. Features a house band of ex-players. Fancy joining?

“The play is fantastic – funny, big-hearted, moving and truthful” Alex Petridis, Guardian

This show encourages all of you to pick up and dust off those instruments, warm-up those voices and do something you love again. Players and singers of different levels are welcome to join in and you don’t have to audition! You will take part in 2 pre-show workshops where the performers will teach you the songs and music! You can also learn and practice the music at home using the ‘Learn to Play’ video that will be provided as part of the sign-up process.

If you’re interested in joining the performers to play live on stage with ‘Putting The Band Back Together’ then email [email protected] with your name and contact information and what you would like to play or sing.

In one of the most horrific moments of the Falklands conflict, the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentine planes. Aboard at the time was Simon. This was an event that would change his life forever.

Eventually, and against the odds, Simon escaped the burning and buckled ship, but only after suffering 46% burns to his body. Today he has become one of the most recognised faces of the conflict and for the first time ever Simon is taking to the stage to tell his story with no holds barred.

Simon Weston, My Life, My Story is a truly inspirational show about one man’s journey from the front line of war, being on the edge of death, to today being a happy and contented Father, Grandfather and national treasure.

Smaller Rooms presents Three Cane Whale

Multi-instrumental acoustic trio Three Cane Whale, combine the influences of folk, minimalism, classical and film music to produce something “fascinating, remarkable, and impressively original” (The Guardian), in which “the aroma of muddy leaves and old nettles is almost tangible” (The Observer).

The band’s eponymous debut album was recorded live in an 18th century Bristol church, and chosen by Cerys Matthews as one of her ‘Top Five Modern Folk Albums’ (Sunday Telegraph). Second album Holts and Hovers was recorded in 20 different locations, including churches, chapels, a greenwood barn, an allotment shed, the top of a Welsh waterfall, and the underside of a Bristol flyover.

Beacon Actors presents The Edelweiss Pirates

Germany 1943. The Second World War. All internal opposition has been viciously silenced and the population follow blindly behind Adolf Hitler and his policies of war and domination. Though the majority of young Germans have been brainwashed into Nazi party policies from an early age, others are becoming disgruntled by the lack of basic freedoms and tired of every aspect of their lives being dictated by the state. Around Germany, small groups of youth form themselves into societies. Some just to listen and dance to banned music and be with like-minded teenagers. One such group were The Edelweiss Pirates, a group who found the courage to say no, enough is enough and to stand up to the regime, knowing they might have a terrible price to pay for their convictions.

Join the Beacon Actors in this gritty, moving and poignant play by Ayub Khan Din (writer of East is East).

Jim Moray

13 years ago, Jim Moray released an album that changed the way people perceived, played and presented English folk music. Sweet England arrived at a time when traditional music was performed much as it had been in the 1970s to an audience of insiders and aficionados. The album was received with open arms by those who understood that the music of the people has survived for centuries by being just that – an expression of the times.

We’re delighted to welcome Jim Moray to Square Chapel in March. This is the perfect evening for any folk music fan.

The Arc, Stockton presents Butterfly

Beatrice, an unlikely heroine in a story of not-so-everyday survival, sits in isolation, waiting for the outcome of a forced mental health assessment. She loved Bowie, the Buzzcocks and the Bay City Rollers back in the day, and now revisits a personal history she only just remembers. But there is an important detail she has forgotten, and she thinks they are putting words into her mouth.

Butterfly is not about suffering from, or surviving, a condition. It is about history, stigma, about misunderstandings and misrepresentations. This clever, funny, dark piece allows us to assess how we treat human beings in the 21st century. This is one not to be missed.

Halifax Women’s Lives 100 Years Ago

Wednesday 8 February | 2pm£6 (£4 Concessions)

What was life like for women early in the 20th Century? Very different indeed than it is today; few had serious job prospects, many had little education, and none could vote. Historian David Glover looks at the lives of women working in local mills, and ‘in service’ in Calderdale. He also relates the stories of three Halifax Suffragettes, before considering how events of The Great War brought eventual change.

Old Halifax Photos Wednesday 15 February | 2pm£6 (£4 Concessions)

David’s selections of old Halifax photos have proved extremely popular and this new offering will not disappoint! Step back in time through pictures and photographs and discover where the old Halifax Vicarage was located and when it was demolished; see what Broad Street, Halifax looked like in 1959; what did the buildings look like that once stood where Madni Mosque is today? Can you recall lost thoroughfares like Oates Street and Neville Street? And where was Webster’s Imperial Café?

‘The Ghost’ – Sir Marmaduke Langdale, Yorkshire Cavalier Wednesday 22 February | 2pm£6 (£4 Concessions)

Hear the story of an ancestor involved in the Civil Wars of the 17th Century, who daringly relieved the siege of Pontefract Castle and held a senior command at Naseby. Surviving against all the odds, Langdale once escaped disguised as a milkmaid and swam the Humber. In 1660 he was created a Baron and appointed the first Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding. Langdale’s sister lived at High Sunderland, the battlemented house that stood above Halifax until 1950. Join David Glover for this remarkable tale of bravery and endurance.

Branwell Bronte and his Halifax Friends

Wednesday 15 March | 2pm | £6 (£4 Concessions)

200 years ago, Branwell Bronte was born a few miles from Halifax. His sisters were to achieve worldwide fame, but Branwell had poems published in Halifax long before they went into print.

By no means as successful as his sisters in the literary field, he showed great talent; but what went wrong? David Glover looks at this capable but flawed young man and invites you to discover his local acquaintances, for Branwell spent much time in Calderdale. A fascinating insight into the brother of the Bronte sisters.
