2 Tim.
3
Characteristic(KJV Term)
Synonym or Definition Explanation and Cross References
2
lovers of their own selves
too intent on one’s own interests
By nature, people love themselves, magnify their own needs and desires, and applaud their own successes (Eph. 2:3; Phil 2:21).
covetous literally, lover of silver
Sinful people will go to any lengths to secure wealth (1 Tim. 6:10).
boasters a braggart who seeks to draw atten-tion to himself
In seeking the praise of others, they claim credit for what God alone could enable them to do (Jer. 9:23–24).
proud having an exalted opinion of self
Pride can surface in any area—abilities (athletic, intellec-tual, or musical), beauty, wealth, culture, nationality, and so on (Prov. 16:18; 1 Cor. 4:7; and James 4:6).
blasphemers reviling These people speak abusively of God and others (Exod. 22:28; 1 Pet. 3:9).
disobedient to parents
not listening to or yielding to parents
Disobedience to parents is a serious matter in God’s eyes, equivalent to the most heinous of sins (Exod. 20:12; Lev. 19:3; Prov. 20:20; Matt. 15:4; 19:19; Eph. 6:2–3).
unthankful lacking gracious-ness
God will bring judgment on those who are un grateful as in the case of King Joash (2 Chron. 22:10–24:26; Prov. 17:13).
unholy profane, having no appreciation for what’s sacred
Unholy persons have contempt for the gospel and refuse any divine claims on their lives (1 Tim. 1:9; Heb. 12:16).
3
without natural affection
lack of normal love Wicked people don’t enjoy a healthy domestic life because their love for self prevents them from loving others, even those who are nearest to them (Matt. 24:12; Rom. 1:31). Divorce, abortion, and child abuse are manifestations of this sin.
trucebreakers implacable These people have an unforgiving spirit. Once offended, they demand revenge and ignore all pleas for reconcili-ation (Matt. 6:12–15; 18:21–22; Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4; 17:3–4).
false accusers slanderers (literally, devilish)
Like blasphemers, they use their tongues to destroy others. Here Paul stressed the deliberate use of false-hood (Prov. 25:18).
incontinent lacking self-control
The incontinent person indulges himself in vice, unable to restrain his appetite for food, sex, wealth, possessions, or position (Prov. 25:28).
fierce savage, brutal, and untamed
These men behave as beasts and abuse others without any twinge of conscience (Matt. 5:7).
despisers of good hatred toward good-ness
This refers to those who can’t stand godly conduct, godly people, or God Himself (Isa. 5:20). It’s the opposite of what’s required of an elder/pastor (Titus 1:8).

Characteristic (KJV Term)
Synonym or Definition Explanation and Cross References
4
traitors betrayers Treacherous people sell out Christ, family, friends, church, or country. Two biblical examples are David’s trusted coun-selor, Ahithophel (2 Sam. 16–17; Ps. 41:9), and Judas Iscariot (Luke 6:16).
heady reckless Headstrong people attempt to accomplish their own wills, regardless of the wishes or desires of anyone else. Such persons refuse the advice of elders and caring friends, reject the principles of God’s Word, and never consider the ultimate consequences of their actions.
highminded clouded with pride They consider themselves more important than they really are (Rom. 12:3).
lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God
pleasure-seekers, not God-seekers
It’s not the love of pleasure that’s wrong. God wants us to love the pleasures available at His right hand forev-ermore (Ps. 16:11). But loving any pleasure more than God is a sin (Prov. 21:17).
5
having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof
with an out ward appearance of being good but lacking any practical virtue
Religion is often quite acceptable to godless people. Taking part in outward worship, going to church, talking about God, or even paying lip service to Christ (especial-ly at Christmas time) is fashionable. Form without faith, however, is worthless (Isa. 1:10–20; Hos. 6:4–6; Mic. 6:1–8).
6
lead[ing] captive silly women
deceiving gullible people
Religious charlatans take prisoners. In this case, they obviously were making inroads among those most vulner-able to their teachings—women who were uneducated and naïve. False teachers deceptively promise spiritual freedom to others while they themselves are in bondage (2 Pet. 2:19).
7
ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth
blown along by every wind of doctrine, but never sailing into the only safe harbor
This suggests that the false teachers were dispensing an early form of the Gnostic heresy, which taught that a person had to attain some secret higher knowledge (beyond what Scripture teaches) to be saved (John 14:6; 17:17).
8
resist[ing] the truth opposing or stand-ing against God
God’s revelation in both creation and His Word is clear, but many choose to hold on to their sin instead (Rom. 1:18).
of corrupt minds thinking that’s per-verted or depraved
The human-centered search for meaning is ultimately meaningless, and those who pursue it end up trading divine truth for the satanic lie (Rom. 1:25).
reprobate concern-ing the faith
disapproved or rejected
Because such people abandon God, He eventually aban-dons them (Rom. 1:28).

L.24: Maintaining Relationships (Part 1)Case Studies: What is a biblical response in each of the following situations?
1. Ming Yu lives in China. Her father is a Christian pastor. He has served two three-year prison terms
because of his forthright testimony for Christ. Ming Yu has been challenged at school to deny Christ.
Answers will vary.
2. Mrs. Brockman was saved at a neighborhood Bible study. Now she wants to join a church and
participate in its activities. Her unsaved husband agreed to her baptism and church membership,
but he refuses to allow her to attend more than the regular meetings of the church. She has ex-
plained to her husband his need to be saved, and he has listened intently and carefully. He is
sympathetic and cooperative but will not let her get involved in anything beyond regular church
services.
Answers will vary, but the Bible does not command believers to attend specific church functions. It
does, however, require a wife to submit to her husband (Eph. 5:22), even a non-Christian husband
(1 Pet. 3:1ff.).

L.25: Enduring PersecutionListing: Summarize in your own words how Peter describes the suffering of the believer in the following 1 Peter passages.
1. 3:14 suffering for the sake of righteousness
2. 3:16 false accusations against our good conduct in Christ
3. 4:1 suffering in the flesh
4. 4:4 evil spoken of
5. 4:12 tried with a fiery trial
6. 4:13 partaker of Christ’s sufferings
7. 4:14 reproached for the name of Christ
8. 4:16 suffering as a Christian
9. 4:19 suffering according to the will of God
Case Studies: How should these Christians respond to their suffering?
1. Reggie was home for the summer from the Christian college he attended. He landed a job working
for a construction firm right away and did well in the job. He often read his Bible on break and
witnessed to his coworkers after hours, but his foreman got mad at him for doing so. He told Reggie
that if he didn’t quit reading his Bible during his breaks and stop talking to the others about Christ, he
would fire him.
Reggie should continue to read his Bible and continue to witness as along as he is not infringing on
his employer’s time. If he gets fired, he can trust God to provide another job or the money in another
way—or eventually take it as God’s direction that he not return to college that semester.
2. Stephanie was saved three years ago after a Christian friend on her soccer team told her about
Christ over a period of many months. Now her older teenage brother constantly ridicules her for
attending church and having devotions.
Stephanie must be faithful at church and in her devotions. She should witness to her brother and treat
him with kindness and concern. She can appeal to him to respect her beliefs, but if he continues to
berate her and mock her faith, she will have to patiently bear with the situation.

L.27: Living for EternityCase Studies: Several qualities that Christians should display are listed in 2 Peter 1:5–7. Identify the quality that each believer lacks in the following circumstances.
diligence 1. John has worked for Mr. Richards for two years but has never really done
his work with a whole heart.
brotherly kindness 2. Mary and Ginny live in the same neighborhood. Both are Christians, but
they avoid each other because of an argument they had once at a Christian
camp they attended.
knowledge 3. Rick failed the Lord when he had an excellent opportunity to witness last
week. He continues to feel guilty even though he’s asked God to forgive him.
self-control (temperance) 4. Robin loves to watch television on Saturdays. Sometimes she watches six
or seven hours at one sitting even though there are other things she needs
to be doing.
godliness 5. Nick works part-time as a mechanic at an auto repair shop. Though he’s
only seventeen, he’s good at what he does and is paid well. He’s been
promised a full-time position after graduation from high school. He used to
be interested in going to a Christian college, but he has set aside spiritual
concerns while he pursues this career. Once he gets established with his
own shop, he plans to focus on spiritual things again.
perserverance 6. Tricia has struggled with Geometry all year. She’s close to passing the
course; she needs only a low B on the final exam, but she is tired of
studying. She has thought about just giving up.
brotherly kindness 7. Steve has a close friend who was seriously injured in a car accident last
fall. This friend has recovered enough now to start physical therapy. Steve
found out that his friend’s parents need someone to help with the therapy
two afternoons a week, but Steve decided not to do it because he usually
plays soccer with his friends in the afternoon.
godliness 8. Renee used to be a faithful Christian, but now she has little interest in the
Bible and refuses to discipline her life in the way of Christ.
patience 9. Bob wants to go to a special retreat planned by his youth group, but his
non-Christian parents don’t like the idea. They reluctantly granted him
permission because he nagged them constantly.
faith or love (for God) 10. Elizabeth always does her school work faithfully. She always keeps her room
neat and clean, and she hasn’t missed her quiet time since she had the flu four
years ago. Her motivation for all this, however, is mainly a desire to please
her parents, impress her teachers, and outdo the other students in her class.

Case Studies: If the incident demonstrates biblical faith, write yes; if it doesn’t, write no.
no 1. Rita recently trusted Christ as her Savior at church while attending a youth meeting.
Two girls in her public high school had invited her to attend. Rita had noticed that
both of the girls were often ostracized and ridiculed by the other kids at school. She
decided against developing a close relationship with the girls so she could witness
to her unsaved friends.
yes 2. Andrew was the best basketball player on the team at his Christian high school. Because
of his skill, the team won the league championship and beat the best public high
schools in the area. The area coaches nominated him for the all-county first team.
Several state colleges offered him full four-year scholarships to come and play for
their teams. One of the colleges was close to home and to his church. He could
continue to stay at home with his parents and attend his church faithfully. But for a
long time Andrew had seen God pushing his desires toward a particular vocation:
he knew he was called to be a biologist. He also knew from wise counsel that he
wasn’t yet ready to handle the arguments of the professional evolutionary biologists
at the nearby university. He needed to be better grounded first in a Christian view
of science. But if he went to a Christian college, he would have to sacrifice the
scholarships and work a part-time job to make ends meet. After much prayer and
thought, he decided to attend a Christian college in a neighboring state.
yes 3. Ben had dreamed of being a dirt bike racer since he was ten years old. He read
every magazine on the sport, watched televised races, and knew all about the top
race drivers. He saved money from odd jobs so that he could buy a top-of-the-line
racing motorcycle. He soon became a prize-winning racer and earned a good repu-
tation in his region. The problem was that most of the prestigious races were on
Sundays. He had to miss church entirely if he entered a race. This was a troubling
thing to Ben for a long time. Finally, he concluded he would have to stop partici-
pating in Sunday races because of his conviction about worshiping and fellowship-
ing with other Christians on the Lord’s Day.

Bible Truths E, Unit 3, Lesson 41
Case Studies: Consider each hypothetical incident or situation. Come up with a biblical response. Be prepared to discuss in class.
1. A city holds an ecumenical prayer breakfast and invites all the religious leaders in the community
(Roman Catholic, Mormon, Muslim, Jewish, etc.) to participate. What should a pastor do?
He shouldn’t attend, explaining to the organizers that Scripture forbids spiritual fellowship with
unbelievers.
2. A foreign religious leader, such as the pope, visits a country. All religious leaders in that country
are invited to meet this leader and attend a formal reception for him. What should Bible-believing
Christian leaders do?
They should refuse to greet the visitor since greeting is a form of support. They should inform the
organizers of their scriptural convictions against such compromise.
3. A pastor is on the last leg of his journey back from a trip to Germany, where his son is a mission-
ary. While on the airplane, he is seated next to a distinguished-looking gentleman. After they get
acquainted, the pastor learns that the man seated next to him is a Catholic priest and a professor of
theology in a Jesuit seminary. The pastor explains where he has been and that he is the pastor of
Community Bible Church. The priest is intensely interested in discussing the differences between
Protestant and Catholic theology.
Answers will vary, but students ought to recognize that the Jesuit professor preaches a different
gospel.
4. A famous evangelist is conducting a citywide crusade. He has the support of many religious
organizations in the community, including some that deny the inerrancy of Scripture or the virgin
birth of Christ. What should Bible-believing Christians do?
They should refrain from going to the meetings and not give any money to support the ministry.
5. A couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses knock on a Christian’s door. They ask if they can come in and
share their message. Should he allow them in the house? Should he offer them a drink of water?
Should he express appreciation for their dropping by?
Believers must not support such missionaries in any way, but allowing them inside for the purpose of
witnessing to them would be acceptable.

6. Cheryl attends Halford High School, the only high school in her county in rural Kansas. The father
of one of her classmates, Elise, is a leader in a religious commune near her family’s farm. Every
day Elise brings a book about the commune’s religious teachings and studies it during lunchtime.
Each evening after school, Cheryl and Elise wait thirty minutes for their rides home. Elise never
talks about her religion and is friendly toward Cheryl even though everyone at school knows that
she is a strong Christian. Should Cheryl treat Elise as a false teacher?
Elise’s father is a false teacher, but she is not. She never propagates her religion and seems open
to instruction from others. Cheryl should take every opportunity to witness to her for Christ and
encourage her to become a Christian.
7. A religious organization is soliciting funds in front of a local discount store. They say the money
will be used to feed hungry children. Should a believer who’s not familiar with the organization
refuse to give? Or should he give a small amount, assuming that it’s for a good cause?
Believers shouldn’t give donations in such situations so that they don’t end up supporting an unbiblical
organization. Before contributing to any organization or person, believers should investigate fully.
8. Raúl lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. His family moved there because his father’s job required him to
transfer. Raúl is eighteen and plans to attend a Christian liberal arts university after graduation this
spring. His neighbor, who is the same age, began his two-year missionary stint as a Mormon
missionary last week. As a Mormon missionary, his first responsibility is to try to convert any of
his friends who are not Mormons.
Raúl should try to lovingly contrast the Mormon teaching about Christ with the Bible’s teaching.

C 1. Tamara attends the Regency Christian Academy. While staying overnight with her cousin, she
met the leader of a local youth organization. He obviously knew a lot about the Bible and seemed
to love the Lord. His group was not part of a local church ministry, but several kids at school
belonged to the group. He said anyone could belong, but that the code of the group required
members to promise never to criticize a minister and to treat all churches alike since all try to
help people.
A 2. Nobody in Amethyst’s youth group witnesses for Christ. After going to camp last summer and
meeting kids from other churches who actively spread the gospel in their schools, she decided
she would try it. When she started talking more openly about her faith in the school cafeteria in
order to share the truth with others, some of her Christian friends told her to stop it. They said
they were embarrassed.
C 3. Todd had a dream one night that he had died and gone to heaven. In his dream, heaven was full
of clouds; everyone looked alike, wore white robes, and sat around all day in cottony chairs
singing hymns. When he woke up he was curious. What was the future with the Lord going to
be like?
C 4. Stephanie had to hurry; the public library would close in two hours. She had to get her report
done for biology by tomorrow, or she would get an F. She didn’t even know where to begin to
look in her research. All the librarians were busy with other people. Seeing her frustration, Father
Mahoney, the Catholic priest from The Church of the Immaculate Conception, came over to her
table and offered to help. When she said she was working on a biology project, he said that was
great. He had been a biology major in college before he went to seminary to become a priest.
He helped her find all the right sources for the project and even suggested a way to organize her
paper. Stephanie was beginning to wonder whether the negative things her pastor had said about
Catholic doctrine were true.

Fill in the Blanks: Read 2 Timothy 3:2–8 and write in the KJV terms used to describe people living in the last days.
2 Tim.

L.44: Christ’s Evaluation of the Church (Part 2)Listing: Write a short sentence about each of the rewards to be given to the faithful in the churches in Thyatira and Sardis. (Include the verse references.)
1. They will have power over the nations (2:26).
2. They will be given the morning star (2:28).
3. They will walk with Christ clothed in white (3:4).
4. Their names will not be blotted out of the book of life (3:5).
5. Christ will confess their names before His Father and the angels (3:5).
Case Studies: Which of the messages to the seven churches (Rev. 2–3) best fits each situation described below.
A. the church at Sardis
B. the church at Smyrna
C. the church at Thyatira
