SCENARIO:
As potential employees in the television or film industries, it is essential that you have a good working knowledge of how these industries are structured in terms of company ownership. You will also need to be familiar with the legal, ethical and contractual issues affecting people working within these industries.
SECTION 1 – OWNERSHIP AND FUNDING IN THE TELELVISION AND FILM INDUSTRIES (P1, M1, D1)
To achieve this grade, you will need to complete all three parts of this section by producing an illustrative WRITTEN report based on the ownership and funding of the television and film industries. Your report should be no less than two pages in length.
PART (1A) TELEVISION OWNERSHIP (P1, M1, D1)
For the first part of this section you will need to explain in detail the ownership structure of the following television companies

You may find it useful to research different types of company ownership for example, Public service, commercial and private, before beginning your report.

For the second part of this section you will need to research the following film companies and explain in detail how they are structured in terms of ownership:

Hint:
You will need to research different types of company ownership (private ownership, independent companies, media conglomerates, vertical and horizontal integration) to help you complete this task.
You will also need to compare these companies in terms of size and amount of profit made etc. by discussing where these companies are based and which other smaller companies they may own.

To do this you will need to research and explain what is meant by each of the following types of funding and explain which industry they apply to:

TASK 2 – JOB ROLES IN THE TELEVISION & FILM INDUSTRIES (P2, M2, D2).
For this task you will be required to produce a Powerpoint presentation consisting of between 8-10 slides which:
Explains what technical, creative and managerial job roles are available within the television & film industries (you must find a minimum of 3 examples for each).
Describes what each of these job roles entails and clearly explains whether they are available in the television or film industries
Discusses what working patterns are associated with these job roles, (e.g. freelance, fixed term, irregular patterns, hourly rates etc.)

TASK 3 – CONTRACTUAL, LEGAL AND ETHICAL OBLIGATIONS IN THE TELEVSION & FILM INDUSTRIES (P3, M3, D3).
For this task you will need to produce a WRITTEN report a minimum of two pages in length, which clearly defines and explains why it necessary for employees in the television and film industries to adhere to the following:
Employment legislation - (e.g. equal opportunities, intellectual property, health & safety etc.)
Ethical obligations - (e.g. codes of practice, policies & procedure, representation issues, e.g. individuals, groups, religions etc.)
Legal obligations – (e.g. Race Relations Act 1976 (and later amendments), Broadcasting Act 1990 (and later amendments), British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and Office of Communications (OFCOM).
Contractual obligations – (e.g. types of contract such as confidentiality or exclusivity).

TASK 4 – DEVELOPING TECHNOLOGIES IN THE TELEVSION AND FILM INDUSTRIES (P4, M4, D4).
For this task you will need to produce an illustrated POWERPOINT presentation of between 8-10 slides, which explains what developing technologies are available and how they have changed the way in which audiences can access products in the television and film industries. You might want to begin by researching the following types of technology:

SECTION 5 – PERSONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT (P5, M5, D5).

You will need to be very proactive if you intend to have a career in the television or film industries, as there are often several people competing for the few job roles that are available. This task will enable you to learn more about how staff are recruited in these industries, as well as how you can help ‘sell’ yourself to potential employers or clients. For this task you will need to:
Research how staff are recruited in the television & film industries e.g. trade press, national press, websites etc.
Find job adverts for two different job roles in the television or film industries that interest you.
Explain in detail what skills and qualifications are required for each of these job roles e.g. degree, BTEC/A-Levels, on the job training, technological skills, reliability etc.
Write an application letter for one of them and produce a media specific CV to accompany your application.
