    by Machgiel Bakker

So it has arrived this week: the latestBeatles Anthology on Apple. Precededby a five -track promo CD, the releaseends an impressive campaign by Appleand EMI to unearth the hundreds andhundreds of tapes with out -takes, try-outs, studio chatter and new songs.Although many of these were avail-able on bootleg before, often present-ing surprisingly high -quality record-ings, the Anthology set does offer loadsof new stuff for the dedicated fan(count me in).But the Beatles chapter is not yet overit seems. Although Apple will not

release any more Beatles material, the legacy of Lennon &McCartney as the century's most important songwriters willcontinue to be honoured. Last week I heard of yet anotherLennon & McCartney tribute album forthcoming on Blue Note,Strawberry Fields - Blue Note Sings Lennon & McCartney, (thesame label issued another tribute in 1991: The Music OfLennon & McCartney - Love Me Blue, featuring Stanley Jor-dan, Bobby McFerrin and Stanley Turrentine). There is noother band in history that is honoured with so many differenttribute albums as The Beatles. They come in all different sortsof styles and genres-salsa, reggae, jazz, classical, muzak, panflute, Beatles songs delivered by dogs, Beatles songs forbabies, and many more deviants. For those radio producerslooking for an original angle to yet another show on the FabFour, I've prepared a (selective) list of some Beatles tributealbums that were released just in the last two years. Evolution - Panpipes Play The Beat- Bugs & Friends - Bugs & Friends

AMSTERDAM - The first Amster-dam Dance Event took place inHolland's capital, October 17-19,and played host to more than700 international dance indus-try members, exceeding theorganisation's expectation of 550participants.

A music conference set up tocelebrate dance music andstrengthen its international net-work, the Amsterdam DanceEvent included an exhibition ofstands filled mainly by indepen-dent dance labels, a small newmedia demonstration room andpanel discussions. The ADE'sstrongest point, however, provedto be getting the right people toattend. Top dance industrymembers and media playersfrom across Europe and the UStook part in panel discussions,as well as general discussiongoing on in the NetworkingLounge. Subjects spanned from

cultivating the underground toincreasing market shares withan overall accent on dancemusic's broad spectrum andfuture.

Smaller, more focused confer-ences seem to be the trend thesedays. The Amsterdam DanceEvent, organised by Conamus, covered strictly dance music. The specific focus made it possi-ble to delve more deeply into thedifferent aspects of dance musicand allowed the nightime clubprogramming to examine thespan of dance subgenres.

The fact that the first editionof the Amsterdam Dance Eventattracted participants from asfar and wide as Argentina, theCzech Republic, Malaysia andJapan is a statement in itselfand bears witness to the powerand influence of dance musicaround the world today.

Italy's IFPI recognisedindustry federation FIMIdeclared October a specialmusic month. To coincide withthe Salone Della Musica, thefive major multi -nationals(BMG, Warner Music, Poly -Gram, EMI and Sony) offered150 best selling titles at 20%discount throughout Italy.

The CD single format, untilnow used primarily as a pro-motional tool will be re-launched as a new format nextJanuary (Music & Media,October 5). PolyGram Italypresident Stefano Senardi saidthat FIMI's new single chartcompiled by the Nielsen mar-ket research company, whichwas to have been launched inTurin at the Salone DellaMusica, will now be launchedin January to coincide with theCD single format re -launch."We preferred to wait untilJanuary when the new CD sin-gle is launched before startingthe new singles chart," saysSenardi adding, "at themoment the majority of singlessold are vinyl 12" mixesthrough very specialist outlets, making it difficult to extrapo-late an accurate sample of sin-gles sales."

The new CD single willmarket three tracks in a card-board sleeve for L9.900 (app.US$6.5). "We will have a spe-cial CD single display inaround 200 outlets and hopethat the new format will showsignificant growth by nextMay," says Senardi. It is hopedthat the psychologically signif-icant price of less than L10.000 will promote impulsepurchasing, and reintroducethe music -buying habit inItaly where the annual percapita spending on records ofUS$10 is very low comparedwith other developed markets.

Jamiroquai Travels High Into Album Chartby Menno Visser

AMSTERDAM - Although it's not theeasiest title to pronounce, Jamiroquai'ssingle Virtual Insanity conquers allboundaries in radio -land and is receivingautomatic airplay on numerous EHR,dance and rock -slanted formats through-out Europe. The third album TravellingWithout Moving, from which the single istaken, has registered impressivecrossborder sales too; recently, it reacheda number 3 position in Music & Media'sEuropean Top 100, the highest -chartingJamiroquai album so far.

A large part of the success can beattributed to Jamiroquai's clever andaccessible '70s -based jazz -dance sound.Another part, says Sony Music UKinternational marketing director JonFowler, is frontman Jay Kay's MTV -friendly appearance. "His charismamakes him a pop star in the true sense ofthe word. His collaboration with M -Beaton the track Do You Know Where You'reComing From [featured as a bonus trackon the album], warmed up the audiencefor a reintroduction, while his own singleput him firmly back on the map. Interms of promotion, the artist hasmatured and developed. We made ageographical plan based on strong areasto further strengthen his appeal."

The biggest market outside the UKfor Jamiroquai is France. Three weeksafter release, the album had alreadyreached gold status (200.000 copies sold).

Sony Music France's S.M.A.L.L. productmanager Olivier Bealu was involvedwith the artist at a very early stage. Heremembers putting Jamiroquai flyers inspecialised shops in March 1993, the

time of the debut single When You GonnaLearn?.

The key strategy for most of themarketing campaigns that S.M.A.L.L.undertakes is guaranteeing an early set-up. Way before the actual release of thenew album, in April of this year, Bealustarted the promotional campaign. Avideo crew from national TV stationAntenne 2 was invited to attend the

in getting an item broadcast on theprimetime evening news programme, around the time of the album release.

Good teamwork between manage-ment, label and the artist is essential,

believes Bealu. "You always have toexplain to an artist why he has to getinvolved in promotion." Other reasons forthe band's success in France areJamiroquai's "soul grooves, the Frenchjust love them. Also, Kay's non-conformist image helps in this respect,"he adds.In Italy the album is already close toplatinum. Italy marketing director

The Corrs' Irish Pop -Rock Joins Celtic Trendby Sally Stratton

LONDON - The Corrs are three sistersand one brother who hail fromDundalk, a border town 50 milesnorth of Dublin. They're massive intheir home country, huge in Denmarkand their album dislodged R.E.M.from the top of the charts inAustralia. They sold over a millioncopies of their debut album Forgiven,Not Forgotten (143/Lava/Atlantic)worldwide, and yet a year after itsrelease across most of Europe, thebuzz is only just beginning in severalterritories.

The quartet went professional in1990, honing their characteristicmusical style which Jim Corr, calls"traditional Irish pop -rock." They soonmet their manager John Hughes whowas getting musicians together forAlan Parker's "The Commitments"and one of the sisters, Andrea, starredin the film. "They're good musicians, they're friendly and the music is

global," says Hughes, explaining theirappeal. "It has rhythm, it has melodyand it's fresh. There's a Celtic trendgoing on everywhere at the moment."The group has spent the past 12 monthspromoting the record from NorthAmerica to Australia and Europe.

Although Forgiven, Not Forgotten issix times platinum at home, they arestill relatively unknown across the Irishsea. Their major European success storyhas been in Denmark, where the albumreached number 4 and went platinum.Their debut single Runaway went toDanish radio last November to coincidewith the band's support slot with CelineDion. Two subsequent singles receivedgood airplay and the new one Love ToLove You is to follow suit. It's the fourthsingle from the album which will bereleased all over Europe, althoughFrance has started working theprevious single The Right Time. So far, their Celtic sound has been well -received in France. According to WarnerMusic Europe marketing director of US

labels, Andy Murray, airplay hasdefinitely generated sales. He addsthat radio has also been supportivein Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italyand more recently Holland, whereregional radio ran a promotion inco-operation with retailers at theend of September around thesingle's release. Acoustic sessionshave also proved popular andMurray sees the quartet play live

for stations as an important part oftheir promotional activities.

Radio's next material from theCorrs will be a promo -only mini -album of live tracks recorded inDenmark by Danmarks Radio P3, tobe released in November. As for thesecond album, John Hughes says itwill be recorded in the US with DavidFoster producing half of it, whileJagged Little Pill producer GlenBallard will take care of the rest.

the European launch of the album. "Asyou might know, Jay Kay is very muchinvolved with Formula One racing. Wecame up with the idea of launching thealbum at the day of the Italian FormulaOne races in Monza. It was a great day,"Boraso remembers, "but logistically notso easy to organise. About 200.000spectators were following the races. Weinvited about 100 guests to listen to thealbum in the morning and watch theraces together with Jamiroquai in theafternoon. Surprisingly, Jay Kay'sfavourite car brand won the races!"Jamiroquai's European tour starts onNovember 15 and will bring the band toHolland, Belgium, Germany, Denmark,Switzerland, Italy, France and Spain.Although Sweden is not included in thetour schedule, Mattias Arwidson, head ofmusic at Swedish Radio FM 104.3/Norkoping thinks direct access to theartist is not so vital anymore. "Recentcall -outs to our audience have taught usthat they don't have the patience tolisten to interviews anymore. What'smore important for programming thesingle is that it has proven to put a broadrange of our listeners in a good mood."

    Creating AWin/Win/WinSituationby Vincent Turco

RADIO SALESIn previous articles partnershipsbetween radio and advertisers in Bel-gium and Germany were examined.Good coordination between the pro-gramming department, sales and theadvertiser can result in successfulcampaigns and a win/win/ win effect.

As a salesperson or sales manager, how many times have you gone to yourprogramming and promotion depart-ment with an idea that you know willnot be put on the air? It is the natureof sales people to try and say yes toevery clients request to air a promo-tion on the radio. But we do this with-out thinking first about the overallgoals of the programme director andpromotion department. If salespeoplefirst defined their position as well astheir advertiser's in relation to theprogramming department, many con-flicts could be avoided.

Programming and promotionreceive their mandate from the man-aging director of the station. Some ofthe main goals are to: Increase ratings Create listener loyalty Develop a "brand" for the radio

productIn Italy, network RTL 102.5 Hit Radioinstructs its salespeople to obtain adetailed brief from the advertiser priorto presenting an idea to promotion andprogramming staff. They have foundthat by communicating programming'sobjectives to sales, it's easier to createthe type of on -the -air "value-added"promotion targeted to the advertiser'sstrategic marketing goals. The salesdepartment already has the interestsof the programming department inmind because they know the station'sposition in the Italian market and howits listeners identify with theirfavourite station. Programming knowsthat the audience ratings will grow ifthey include the following elements onair: Audience participation Interesting and exciting games A fun and entertaining listening

environmentIn one case RTL 102.5 approached

Nestle to see if the station could helpthem with a new product launch. In1994 Nestle introduced "CappuccinoNescafe," an instant hot beverageavailable in individual powdered serv-ings. The target audience for the cam-paign on RTL 102.5 was adults 18-35.Nestle wanted to enhance the spotcampaign with an on -air promotion inorder to achieve the following objec-tives:

    1) Communicate to a younger targetaudience the on -going consumer promo-tion called "Fly away on vacation withCappuccino Nescafe."2) Create and stimulate use and pur-chase of the product by describing thetaste of the product along with its conve-nience-it's quick and easy to use. Itshould be noted that in Italy people pre-fer to drink cappuccino in a café or coffeebar, so the positioning statement used inthe campaign was, "The cappuccino thatyou can prepare at home just like theone you drink in the bar!"

Radio For MarketingTasting or sampling the product wasnecessary to reinforce the advertisingmessage and stimulate sales. Here wecan see the power of radio used as a mar-keting tool to advertisers. Not only canthe radio commercial be used to create abrand, but it also can incorporate mar-keting techniques like redemption andsampling for advertisers.

The actual on -air promotion involveslisteners being invited to call in to guessa "mystery nation." The prize is a "Cap-puccino Card" and a Nescafe cappuccinosample product. Every day the DJ takesthe listeners to a different "mystery"country where they can use their card. The listeners are advised not to callunless they are willing to have some fun.The DJ instructs the caller to imitatesounds such as airplanes landing andtaking off, flamenco dancing, castanets, ocean noises and the like, while clues aregiven to the identity of the mysteriouscountry they are about to visit.

The station benefitted a great dealfrom the promotion. Listeners wereentertained and the advertiser receivednumerous promotional spots. Nescafewas able to get its product sampled bytheir target audience through the cam-paign. Through sampling the product, the advertiser was attempting to estab-lish its "brand" in the Italian market.

Theatre Of MindIn another campaign, RTL 102.5 usedradio's "theatre of the mind" qualities tohelp a brand create a line extension.Aperol "Soda" was introduced by theBarbero company in Italy in 1995, andwanted to use radio to achieve the fol-lowing goals: Increased awareness of the product Expanding the consumer base to ayounger target

Aperol, a traditional alcoholic aperi-tif, is a direct competitor with Campariin Italy. Aperol Soda is a pre -mixed bev-erage with only a 3% alcohol content, which the company wanted to position asboth a healthy drink and a thirstquencher.

    MUSIC MEDIA NOVEMBER 2, 1996AmericanRadioHistory.Com

  • M & M R ADIO MAKING WAVESAt designated "aperitif' times, 12:00

and 19:00, RTL 102.5 created the "AperolSoda Meeting At The Bar." Listeners aretransported daily into an imaginary barwhere they are invited to call in to "drink"Aperol Soda along with the DJ on the air.As in the case of Nescafe, the radio stationattempts to create a "real" bar with soundeffects. During the call, the DJ promotesthe various qualities of the product as hedrinks it. At the end of the meeting in the"bar," he offers the caller the opportunityto invite someone to drink a real AperolSoda in a real bar in the caller's hometown.

The example illustrates a classic caseof image building by the advertiser. Thefact that you are inviting someone todrink the product reinforces the desiredadvertising message which is that AperolSoda is: A good drink in social settings Fun to drink Young and modern Healthy-with low alcohol content

Radio, Brand LoyaltyThe on air "virtual bar" also reinforcesthe atmosphere created by the accom-panying TV campaign in which youngpeople are seen drinking the product, socialising and having fun in a bar set-ting. Radio can be seen as the impor-tant connection to the "visual transfer"of the TV campaign. The interactivepromotion is able to create the sensa-tion in the mind of the listener that he

or she is actually drinking and enjoyingthe product.

The image of a product is usually seenby marketers as being that "intangible"element which is necessary to create thebrand. We buy the product because of theway it makes us feel as opposed to suchtangible aspects as taste and smell. Weassociate brand loyalty with the productwhich is able to communicate this feelingbetter than its competitors. The DJ'sstrong association with RTL 102.5's lis-tening audience also helped Aperol Sodabreak through to achieve an image asso-ciation. The listener reasons, "If myfavourite DJ likes Aperol Soda thenmaybe I should try it also." Or moredirectly, "I want to feel as good as the DJwho is drinking Aperol Soda."

What we can learn from these exam-ples is that when we as radio marketersstudy our position together with ouradvertisers and programming depart-ment, we can achieve a win/win/win situ-ation where all participants receive bene-fits from the radio campaign andpromotion.

Iberic Rhythms SwinOn World StageThe term 'world music' defines an attitude asmuch as it describes a genre. An attitude on thepart of consumers to move outside the conventionallimits of western pop, and on the part of musiciansand producers to look beyond those limits for theirartistic inspiration.by Terry Berne

HEN viewed fromthis perspective, theterm surmounts therather narrow defini-tion of ethnic or folk

music from outside the western tra-dition. As more attention is paid toworld music by all sectors of theindustry, from the media to festivalpromoters, record companies andretailers, the genre itself is evolv-ing, resulting in higher quality pro-ductions and more interesting col-laborations.

Spain is one of the richest ofEuropean territories, offering avariety of musical styles deeplyrooted in local traditions, whichare having an increasing influenceon pop music everywhere. In thisregard, two of the year's mostawaited albums, Temporal fromRadio Tarifa and Santiago fromthe Chieftains (both BMG) recastvery different Spanish musical tra-ditions into exciting contemporaryform.

Radio Tarifa's 1993 debut,Rumba Argelina was one of themost acclaimed albums withinworld music circles. Temporal con-tinues the group's exploration andexpansion of Span-ish music and itsMediterraneansources, addingmodern elementsto medieval compo-sitions and mixinginstruments likethe electric bass, accordion and sax-ophone with tradi-tional ones like thecane flute and ahost of Arab and Turkish stringinstruments and percussion. Longforgotten Iberian popular songs, sephardic tunes, Greek modes,Saharan influences and flamencogive rise to a fascinating and infec-tious contemporary sound whichhas made the group a particularlypopular draw on its recent Euro-pean tours.

Reed player, multi -instrumen-talist and Radio Tarifa memberJavier Paxarino uses some ofthese same elements to extraordi-nary effect on his Perihelion(Nuba), which approaches the

    Radio Tarifa (BMG)

material from a more personal, experimental standpoint.

Galician Celtic RootsThe Celtic music of Galicia, onSpain's northwest coast, is theinspiration for the Chieftains' San-tiago, featuring native CarlosNunez on the gaita, or Galicianbagpipes, as well as performancesby Ry Cooder, Eliot Fisk, LindaRonstadt and Los Lobos. Thealbum not only celebrates Galicia'sCeltic roots, but the influence ofGalician emigrants on the music ofthe new world. Nunez has travelledextensively with the Chieftains, andhis own album, with help in turnfrom the Chieftains and Cooder, will be released internationallyearly next year.

The Galician connection hasbeen mined for years by Spain'sown Milladoiro whose new doubleCD, As Fadas De Estrano Nome, recorded live in Buenos Aires, wasrecently released by Barcelonaindie Discmedi. The first cut onSantiago is called Txalaparta afterthe evocative Basque percussioninstrument which is also highlight-ed on composer Tomas SanMiguel's beautiful and intriguing

homage to theBasque regionLezao (NuevosMedios), which fea-tures JavierPaxarifto, andKepa Junkera-who also plays onSantiago-on triki-tixa, or box accor-dion. Further Celticbloodlines can betraced on Basque

trio Him Truku's more tradition-al debut on Nuevos Medios, whichincludes appearances by renownedUK fiddlers Eliza Carthy andNancy Kerr.

Afro -Portuguese WindThe other Iberian culture which isgenerating a great deal of musicalactivity of late is Portugal's, and itsAfro -Portuguese and Brazilianbrethren. Lisbon, Salvador daBahia and Luanda are the verticesof a triangle stretching across theAtlantic Ocean. Luso Mania (Piran-

    H

    Oumou Sangare (World Circuit)

ha) is the name of a brilliant newcollection recorded live in the sum-mer of 1995 at Berlin's Heimat-Klange Festival which presentsartists from throughout this flour-ishing musical matrix. Gumbe, forro, morna-three styles, threedifferent countries-united by acommon heritage. Brazilians Mar-gareth Menezes and accordionistOswaldinho, Angola's Bonga andWaldemar Bastos (familiar to lis-teners of last year's Luaka Bop com-pilation Telling Stories To The Sea),and violinist Agostinho de Pina ofthe Cape Verde Islands are just afew of the dozens of musicians whocontribute to this Portuguese gar-den of delights.

Portugal's own national musicalstyle is known as fado, and PauloBraganca is a young fado singerintent on renovating the melan-choly form by adding far-flungrhythmic and melodic elementssuch as hip hop or bossa nova, imbuing it with a contemporary, urban edge. He has alreadyenjoyed wide success in Portugal, and his upcoming Luaka Boprelease, slated for November, willdeservedly introduce him to awider audience.

But it's Brazil's rich multitudeof styles which has provided theworld with the most popular andinfluential Portuguese inflectedmusic, from bossa nova to lamba-da, samba to the more explicitlyAfrican sounds of Bahia. Hemi-sphere, EMI's world music label, has many discs dedicated to docu-menting this abundant heritage, such as Yele Brazil, a gathering ofBahia's best, and the latest,Samba, an impeccable anthology ofsome of the genre's best knownartists, including Ivan Lins, ElisRegina, Djavan, and Clara Nunez. The late Nunez, one of samba'sgreatest stars, is the focus ofanother Hemisphere release, ComVida, an enthralling tribute in theform of a series of duets, created inthe studio after her death, with thelikes of Chico Buarque, GilbertoGil, Milton Nascimento and JoaoBosco.

Crammed Disc's Moleque DeRua, a gritty musical reflection oflife in the streets of Brazil's cities

from a group composed of street-wise kids who sing of their ownpoverty, social -exclusion and sur-vival, spent months heading theWorld Music Charts Europe lastyear. Although it can hardly becalled a world music album,Verve's collaboration with the RedHot Organization, Red Hot & Rio,with participation from Brazilianmusicians like Astrud Gilberto,Flora Purim, and Caetano Velosoteamed with international popstars such as George Michael,Sting, Ryuichi Sakamoto, CrystalWaters and David Byrne, demon-strates the interest Portuguesemusic is currently engendering.

Ethno-Coloured RockEthno Punk, Around The WorldWith Attitude is another unusualand vibrant compilation from Hemi-sphere, a sampling of rootsy rockfrom as far afield as Japan (ParshaClub), China (Ciu Jian), and Brazil(Paralamas Do Sucesso), as well ascloser to home, with cuts fromItaly's colorful Mau Mau, Sweden'sDen Fule, France's Mano Negra,Spain's Ciudad Jardin and Poland'sRaz, Dwa, Trzy, among others.Scotland's Shooglenifty will alsoappear on the upcoming Folk 'N'Hell collection covering thatregion's exciting new alternativefolk/rock scene.

Afro -Celtic To Afro BeatCeltic music's influence and inspi-ration is only comparable to that ofAfrica. Now the Afro Celt SoundSystem (Real World) means tomerge them. It is less ambient andmore rhythmic than this summer'sNusrat Fateh Ali Khan albumNight Song, which was also a hit forthe label. Lightly textured keyboardwashes frame a dialogue betweenthe celtic harp and a talking drum,or the kora and uilleann pipes.Dance rhythms alternate withreels, and members of Senegalesesuperstar Baaba Maal's band jamwith Shooglenifty's self -described"hypnofunkadelia." This is an evolv-ing project so we can expect more inthe future.

The other bright star in this sea-son's world music firmament isMalian singer Oumou Sangare'sterrific new album Worotan (WorldCircuit) currently number 1 on theWorld Music Charts Europe. Faith-ful both to her homeland and herhumanist principles, this is hermost consistent album to date. Hervoice is capable of both soaringenergy and imploring sadness, aided by affecting backup vocals, fabulous guitar playing, and thehelp of reedman Pee Wee Ellis, allwrapped in pristine productionwhich captures all the subtle forceof Sangare's voice. Upcoming fromthe label is singer/composerCheikh Lo's Ne La Thiass, thefirst international release by Yous-sou N'Dour's Jololi label. HisNovember 17 concert in Colognewill be broadcast live by WDR.
