To: The Parents of L8th pupils June 2015
Dear Parents,
In January a great many of you were able to come to our presentation about university application.
Since then, we have given L8th boys a four lesson course on universities. In addition the vast
majority of boys have already made appointments with their university advisers to discuss their
university application plans. Should any boy have not yet seen an adviser, they should make an
appointment as soon as possible. The universities department team is listed below together with
subject specialisations:
Mr Okan Avni - Computing, Engineering (excluding Chemical Engineering) and Sciences
(excluding Biosciences and Chemistry). For the summer term, Dr Camille Shammas
Mr Douglas Cairns - Ancient History, Classical and Modern Languages, Law, Music and
Philosophy
Dr John Hudson - Anthropology, Archaeology, Art, Geography, History of Art, Human
Sciences, Land Economy and Psychology
Mr Bernard O'Keeffe - English, Drama, Architecture, Politics, Religious Studies, Media Studies,
Social & Political Sciences and PPE
Mr Sam Roberts - Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry
Mr Neville Sanderson - Asian Studies and History

Throughout the last two weeks of the summer term, potential Oxbridge candidates should be in
touch with the relevant teachers to discuss holiday reading, and with the appropriate Head of
Department together with the university adviser for advice on choice of colleges. Clearly some
boys’ plans may need to be adjusted in the light of AS results in mid-August.
If you have any further specific queries, please contact Mrs Kirkham or me. Ms Carol Graham
([email protected]) will be very happy to deal directly with any queries regarding
applications to US universities.
I will write again in the last week of term with important information regarding deadlines for
submission of personal statements and completed UCAS and US application forms.
Yours faithfully,
Neville Sanderson
P.S. This has been sent to the school by UCAS recently and may be useful as a guide for parents
wishing to know about the application process:
We’ve produced an interactive parent tool which gives a top level overview of the entire application
journey. It’s user-friendly and packed with useful information and advice.
We’ve also created a series of 90 second videos, illustrating how parents can best support their son
or daughter throughout the application journey. They include advice on how to apply, open days,
and funding and finance information.
Our 2016 Parent Guide is essential reading for anyone helping a student navigate the admissions
process (also available in Welsh), and our monthly newsletters give parents timely advice and
updates every few weeks.
